Back to School Edition 2024

What’s Driving the News: The 2024 back to school season is starting off HOT, and it doesn’t seem to be cooling down any time soon. As students excitedly return to the classroom, schools must balance maintaining a comfortable learning environment in the face of extended warm seasons.

Why This Matters: The nation’s schools annually emit as much carbon as 18 coal plants or 8 million homes, according to an analysis of U.S. Department of Energy data by the advocacy group Generation180. But K-12 schools and district leaders across the country are in the unique position to equip students with the knowledge and preparation for a future shaped by climate change. In addition, they have considerable carbon reduction possibilities being major building owners, transportation managers, and employers. Leveraging the power of schools and their district leaders would simultaneously have significant carbon reductions as well as introduce low carbon alternatives as a norm for students.

Community solar is a great way for schools to achieve their sustainability goals while also significantly reducing their energy costs. According to Generation180, the amount of solar installed at K-12 schools in the United States has tripled since 2015. Today, over 6 million students attend a solar-powered school, and it is not hard to see why so many school administrators are turning to solar. At the university level, it also creates unique educational opportunities to prepare college students for well-paying jobs in a fast-growing industry, such as learning how to install solar panels. Pivot Energy is currently working with the University of Colorado Boulder and the University of Denver (DU) to offset the schools’ electricity consumption with on-campus and off-site net metering solar projects. At DU, the off-site projects will be used for student learning opportunities to advance the clean energy workforce. Mat Elmore, SVP Strategic Accounts at Pivot Energy, can discuss the growing role schools and workforce development have in the clean energy transition.

HOW 4-H’ers ARE LEARNING ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF POLLINATORS & HOW THEY’RE AN ESSENTIAL COMPONENT IN GLOBAL FOOD PRODUCTION

Pollinator Week is an annual event celebrated internationally in support of pollinator health.

So, what exactly are pollinators? Birds, bats, bees, butterflies, beetles, and other small mammals that pollinate plants are responsible for bringing us one out of every three bites of food. They also sustain our ecosystems and produce our natural resources by helping plants reproduce.

If you enjoy coffee, chocolate, apples, almonds, and many other foods that are part of our daily lives, you may be surprised to learn that without pollinators they might no longer exist. About 35 percent of the world’s food crops are the result of pollinating species, an essential component in global food production.

Learning about the importance and benefits of pollinators on the world’s food supply is the idea behind the 4-H Pollinator Habitat Program. The three-year program aims to teach 30,000 youth nationwide about the importance of pollinators and pollinator habitats, while encouraging the establishment of quality pollinator habitats at 22 sites across the country.

The program features a “Teens as Teachers” approach which is a true win-win for kids. The young people learn skills from teen ambassadors they look up to while 4-H teens develop their leadership skills through teaching.

The great thing about Pollinator Week is that you can celebrate and get involved any way you like! Kids can take part in craft activities by making their own ants from clothes pins and pipe cleaners, or designing a butterfly using a coffee filter and food dye, among many other ideas found on the 4-H website. https://www.4-h.org or http://www.4-h.org/corteva

4-H teen ambassador Grace Moeller from Minnesota will join Rancher & 4-H Mom Natalie Kovarik to discuss the 4-H Pollinator Habitat Program, how kids can get involved during National Pollinator Week, and the importance of the program for the future of U.S. agriculture and the global food supply.

From the heart of the Nebraska Sandhills, Natalie Kovarik shares her ranching and familying story to showcase the beauty behind the western lifestyle as well as foster a community that supports and trusts in agriculture as much as she does. Most of her days are spent bouncing around in a dusty old tractor or out in pasture on horseback, and she wouldn’t have it any other way. With roots firmly planted in the ranching community, she aims to spend her time advocating for rural life while collecting meaningful moments on her ranch with her ever-growing family.

About the Book:

This is a practical and useful book that is unified to combine a regular textbook containing conversation/vocabulary/phases with four language tools such as writing/reading/speaking/listening.

This textbook provides English translations for Chinese language in writing/reading/speaking and listening. The chapters of the book help American-speaking individuals quickly translate English words and phrases into Chinese. Including many situations that occur in daily life; such as asking for help, finding a doctor, identifying food allergies, restaurant dining, shopping, greetings, and etc. can be found in the chapters. Best of all, you can gain confidence in communicating in the 21st century with Chinese-speaking individuals.

Students found this textbook useful during interactions with others because of the simplicity of the chapters. The book is also convenient to carry because it’s soft cover.

As the author, I would like to reiterate that my purpose in writing each chapter of this resourceful book is similar to the trunk of a big tree that establishes and prepares students for a solid and stable language foundation in Chinese. I am hopeful that you too, find the text, conversations, vocabulary, and phrases practical and useful in assisting your ability to listen, speak, read, write, and learn Chinese.
