I had the honor of delivering the 4^th FW de Klerk Annual Memorial Lecture in Cape Town, South Africa last week.

I was privileged to work with former South African President FW de Klerk at numerous Summits of Nobel Peace Laureates, an organization founded by President Mikhail Gorbachev which convenes Peace Laureates at extraordinary conferences on a regular basis and with which I am honored to serve as its Representative to the United Nations. I draw your attention to the Final Declarations, which contain expressions of collective wisdom and practicality. President de Klerk’s contributions were always substantive, terse, and clear.

We traveled together on a delegation hosted by Bahrain which the Global Security Institute helped coordinate. He demonstrated courage in his work to help end apartheid in South Africa and I observed his humility, and warmth wherever he went.

Ambassador Thomas Graham, a member of GSI’s Board of Directors was instrumental in the creation and signing of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty as the lead diplomat for the United States on the issue. His historic analysis is essential reading for anyone serious about understanding its creation and importance. The Treaty’s relationship to the stability of the nonproliferation regime and the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty is the focus of an in-depth, but short, study by  the European Leadership Network.

President Clinton’s characterization of the Treaty is succinct and accurate… “I was honored to be the first of 146 leaders to sign the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, our commitment to end all nuclear tests for all time — the longest-sought, hardest-fought prize in the history of arms control. It will help to prevent the nuclear powers from developing more advanced and more dangerous weapons. It will limit the possibilities for other states to acquire such devices… Our common goal should be to enter the CTBT into force as soon as possible, and I ask for all of you to support that goal.” Note also quotes from Presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy on the subject.

You might also enjoy my thoughts regarding the recent apparent order by President Trump to resume nuclear testing and U.S. votes on this subject in the UN General Assembly, addressed in a syndicated article by the Inter Press Service. My quotes are outstanding in their unique grammatical awkwardness, unnecessary loquaciousness, exemplifying an overly pedantic series of run-on sentences, which in summary strongly urge against the resumption of testing and emphasize the need for cooperation to address an abundance of threats to us all.

On 21 November, I will address the third Annual Digital Power of Women Conference. This distinguished event powerfully advances much-needed gender balance. I hope you can join virtually.

GSI Advisory Board Member Honorable Douglas Roche’s very personal article Creative Dissent: A Politician’s Struggle for Peace merits a serious quiet read. Read the Full Article HERE Religious Leaders Unite for Faith and Freedom On October 16, 2025, the Universal Peace Federation (UPF), FFWPU-Capital Family Church, and ACLC hosted the “Peace Starts With Me Alliance” Religious Freedom Prayer Luncheon at The Washington Times building. Despite only a week’s notice, 40 faith and community leaders gathered to support religious liberty and interfaith solidarity, focusing on the detention of Mother Han, co-founder of the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification, and other Christian leaders in South Korea. Dr. Achile Acolatse, Southeast Region Director, called the gathering an urgent reminder to defend freedom of faith, while Dr. Michael Jenkins, UPF-North America President, highlighted Mother Han’s decades-long work promoting peace, dialogue, and humanitarian efforts. Leaders from Christianity, Islam, and Sikhism offered prayers, shared messages of solidarity, and coordinated special prayer services to advocate for justice and freedom. NEW YORK (RNS) — As New York City Mayor Eric Adams prepares to leave office this fall, after suspending his reelection bid amid outcry over a scandal-ridden mayorship, he leaves behind a new network of faith leaders mobilized by his crisis initiatives and concerned those partnerships will falter under a new administration.

Adams, who was indicted in 2024 on federal charges of wire fraud, bribery and conspiracy tied to campaign fundraising, decided not to run in the Democratic primary in June, choosing to run in the general election as an independent candidate instead. But faced with the popular Democratic candidate, Zohran Mamdani, and the familiar face of former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Adams announced on Sept. 28 that he would not seek reelection, after a Quinnipiac poll showed his approval rating was among the lowest for a New York City mayor in recent decades.

Despite his unpopularity with many New Yorkers, Adams’ legacy among faith communities is marked by an unprecedented partnership that brought small and often overlooked congregations to the front lines of city governance in ways no modern mayor had before.

“I think we were looking to make sure that the faith-based community had direct access to New York City resources,” Monrose said. “Adams wanted to make sure that the faith community is consistently on his radar, that he would be in touch with them, and our office would continue to maintain relationships.”

Monrose turned that mission into a sustained network of outreach. Through the OFBCP, members of different faith communities across New York’s five boroughs were invited to monthly meetings with city commissioners to discuss services such as food pantries, clothing drives and issues that affected their small congregations. Monrose manages a WhatsApp group with hundreds of contacts he’s gathered over his years as a pastor in Brooklyn, along with an email list that sends out announcements several times a week about upcoming events sponsored by his office.

“There are some rooms that I have been in that I would never have been in if it wasn’t for Eric Adams,” said Latricia Davis, the outreach ministry pastor at the Community Church of Christ in Jamaica, Queens. “The emails, the texts and the response from his office was unbelievable. I’m getting emotional about it because he cared about us.”

​​The office’s work evolved into citywide initiatives. In 2023, it launched the faith-based shelter program, mobilizing churches, mosques and synagogues to house asylum-seekers during the city’s migrant crisis by providing renovations and resources to congregations citywide.

“Mayor Adams was willing to work with congregations as a way of addressing social safety net needs in the city that has been so far unique,” said Peter Gudaitis, executive director of New York Disaster Interfaith Services, or NYDIS, a nonprofit that has provided disaster relief and faith-community recovery services that worked closely with the OFBCP to coordinate and activate the faith-based shelter program.

In June 2023, as thousands of migrants arrived in New York City, the city’s homeless shelters and hotel voucher program were overwhelmed. With asylum-seekers lining the streets and criticism mounting over the city’s slow response, Adams, through the OFBCP, began turning to houses of worship for help.

Daniel’s military career has been a mix of active and Reserve duty service and she describes herself as an “Army brat.” Her father retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Corps of Engineers.
