Native Americans have a proud legacy of military service, dating all the way back to the Indian Wars in the 1600s. These Soldiers have served with honor, dedication, and distinction and continue a long legacy of professionalism and selfless service.

As we celebrate Native American Heritage Month, the Army Reserve recognizes the importance of inclusivity and understands the value individuals bring through their lived experiences. America and its people have changed throughout history, but the spirit and culture of indigenous people can be seen throughout society and our Army Reserve.

This Veterans Day, the Smithsonian will be honoring their military service with the formal dedication of the National Native American Veterans Memorial.

For some Army Reserve Soldiers, their mission extends beyond land operations. Every day Soldiers take to the skies with careers in aviation and aerial defense. Army Reserve crew members perform a multitude of missions, including transporting troops and personnel, distributing supplies and equipment, directing search and rescue missions, providing combat support, and more in support of the Army’s mission here in the United States and around the world. This National Aviation Week, the Army Reserve commemorates the achievements and innovations of Soldiers in this field.

The Army Reserve has a range of opportunities in the aviation community. Most notably, Army pilots are responsible for flying fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and drones. However, careers in Army aviation also include aviation operations specialist, air traffic control, aircraft electricians, helicopter mechanics, aircraft structural repair, and flight paramedics.

The Army Reserve will celebrate its 114th birthday with the theme, ‘America’s Army Reserve and its People, Shaping Tomorrow!’ Throughout history, Soldiers have leveraged their professional skills while serving in uniform, adding substantial value and depth to the force, with skills, education and expertise developed in the private sector. As the Army Reserve looks ahead to the future, it will be one of the most experienced and diverse forces in our Nation’s history.

The service is celebrating the generations of men and women who embrace their roles as “Citizen Soldiers,” continuing a proud and distinguished legacy of service. Army Reserve Soldiers have integrated their military service with civilian careers, family, and personal lives, succeeding and thriving in the workplace and on the battlefield. They are doctors, lawyers, academics, scientists, engineers, cyber specialists, police officers, first responders, transportation specialists, administrators, and more–and they’re at the top of their fields.

Since 2001, more than 420,000 Army Reserve Soldiers have been mobilized and routinely deployed in 23 countries around the world. From natural disasters to national emergencies, the Army Reserve has never failed to answer the Nation’s call.

Daniels holds a bachelor’s degree in Applied Mathematics (Computer Science) from Carnegie Mellon University, a master’s degree and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Massachusetts (Amherst) as well as a master’s degree in Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College. Lt. Gen. Daniel’s military career has been a mix of active and Reserve duty service and she describes herself as an “Army brat.” Her father retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Corps of Engineers.

During National Women’s History Month in March, the Army Reserve joins the nation to celebrate the contributions and accomplishments of women.

Women’s History Month stands as a reminder of the strength the Army Reserve has as a diverse all-volunteer force.

Command Sergeant Major (CSM) Raquel A. DiDomenico will share how she became the first female First Sergeant of a Combat Engineer Company in 2015, before combat-designated units were opened to women. DiDomenico will also highlight the achievements of other women in the military.

Of the many accomplished women within the Army Reserve, perhaps the most noteworthy example to date is Lieutenant General (LTG) Jody J. Daniels the Chief of Army Reserve and Commanding General, U.S. Army Reserve Command, the first woman to lead the Army Reserve and the first female commander of any Army component. In this role, LTG Daniels is paving the way for the next generation of female Army Reserve leaders.

Army Reserve diversity is about understanding the value individuals bring and optimizing what they offer to build high-performing and cohesive teams. The Army Reserve is stronger because of this diversity.

The Army story isn’t complete without the historic achievements of women Soldiers and Civilians, who have played a major role in defense of our Nation since the Revolutionary War. Women of every race, class and ethnic background have made historic contributions to the growth and strength of our Army.

To continue this story, the Army Reserve provides leadership opportunities to all Soldiers to enable them to thrive in their careers and build successful lives:
• Since 2016, the Army has trained more than 3,200 women Soldiers into Infantry, Armor and Field Artillery Occupations

“The Calling” Film Series Tells the Surprising, Emotional Stories of Soldiers Behind the Uniform
“The Calling” is a new animated film series from the U.S. Army designed to profile the deeply emotional and diverse origin stories of five Soldiers as they make the most important decision of their lives: answering the call to serve.
The new series shows that Soldiers are so much more than their tough exteriors as it sets out to close the relatability gap between Gen Z and America’s largest military branch.
• Research shows many youth see the Army as a “distant star,” a place that requires a nearly superhuman level of discipline and excellence and is set apart from daily life.
• Similarly, many youth can’t connect with Soldiers and fail to see any commonalities in terms of interests, abilities, and goals.
• At a time of a widening military-civilian divide, “The Calling” makes the Army more accessible by bringing audiences into the lives and motivations of the people inside it: Soldiers.
The animated anthology is a distinct departure from previous Army campaigns – both for its arresting visual approach and its intimate portrayal of the people behind the uniform. By acknowledging that Soldiers are real people with their own hopes, dreams, fears, aspirations, families, friends, and obstacles to overcome, “The Calling” turns what was once a one-dimensional view of Army Soldiers into something relatable and more human. Rooted in the premise that you can’t truly know someone until you understand where they came from, the campaign shows that you don’t have to be born a warrior to eventually become one. Anyone can hear the calling.
Animation was a clear creative choice for “The Calling” because of its visual interest, narrative flexibility, and Gen Z appeal thanks to the popularity of events like Comicon and animated dances and videos. Animation also provided the opportunity to give each Soldier’s story a unique style and tone that underscored just how diverse each story is from the next. Through the expressive power of animation, the campaign conveys more than just events. It conveys emotion.

Haley Johnson is a First Lieutenant currently stationed at Fort Benning, GA assigned to 14th CSH working on the Mother-Baby Unit at Martin Army Community Hospital. Her first duty assignment was Joint Base San Antonio where she worked at the hospital’s Bone Marrow Transplant Unit prior to her compassionate reassignment to Fort Benning in 2019. She is a first generation college student and attended Kennesaw State University in Georgia on a national ROTC scholarship in 2012. During her ROTC career she attended Airborne school and competed on the Georgia Tech’s Ranger Challenge Team. She graduated with her nursing degree and started active duty December of 2016. She has competed in many fitness and physique sport competitions over the years and most recently competed on season two of NBC’s “The Titan Games”. The televised fitness competition series is hosted by The Rock and this season premiered May 25, 2020. 1LT Johnson appears on four consecutive episodes, 9,10,11, and 12. It was at the casting for this show that she met her now husband and they both welcomed a new baby into their lives this year.

There are currently 15.5 million U.S. children living below the federal poverty line. Moreover, 1 out of every 3 children lives in a family where neither parent has full-time, year-round employment. Given the current economic climate, millions of children risk disappointment on Christmas morning as their parents struggle to provide the basic essentials of food and shelter for their little ones.
Fortunately, parents can turn to the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation during this time of the year. Unfortunately, toy donations over the past few years have declined, so we are hoping to reach your listeners who may have the extra resources to purchase toys for less fortunate children in your community.

Since 1947, U.S. Marine Corps Reserve units have conducted Toys for Tots campaigns in communities nationwide to bring the joy of the holidays and a message of hope to America’s most deserving children. Last year, Toys for Tots conducted programs in 760 communities – covering all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands – delivering 17.8 million toys to nearly 7 million children. These gifts offer children hope, recognition and a positive memory to cherish for a lifetime. Many of the books, games and sports equipment that we provide make a significant contribution to these children’s educational, social and physical development.

President and Chief Executive Officer for the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, retired Marine Corps Lt. General Pete Osman, discusses how listeners can deliver joy to a child in need in their community this holiday season. General Osman will provide details about the individual need in specific markets, the status of the local toy drive and where listeners can donate. He will also suggest toys to donate that meet Toys for Tots needs in your community.
