New York City will purchase millions of dollars of medical debt and then erase it in effort to help as many as 500,000 residents, Mayor Eric Adams announced on Monday.

The program involves partnering with a nonprofit organization, RIP Medical Debt, that buys unpaid medical debt from hospitals at a steep discount and then clears it. The city will invest $18 million to relieve more than $2 billion in medical debt for hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers, Adams said.

Affected New Yorkers will be notified that their medical debt has been relieved, as there is no application process for the one-time debt relief program, which will launch early this year and run for three years.

“No one chooses to go into medical debt — if you’re sick or injured, you need to seek care. But no New Yorker should have to choose between paying rent or for other essentials and paying off their medical debt,” Adams said in a statement.

The program is aimed at New Yorkers whose unpaid medical bills are at least 5% of their annual household income or those in households with an income under four times the federal poverty line, which is $31,200 for a family of four.

Medical debt is the single-largest cause of bankruptcy in the United States, and disproportionately affects low-income Americans and those without health insurance or who are underinsured.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul in December signed legislation that bars health care professionals and ambulances from reporting medical debt to credit agencies.

A New York charity started in 2014, RIP Medical has abolished more than $10.4 billion in medical debt for more than 7 million people since its inception, according to its website.

Ducks Quack, Eagles Soar

I was waiting in line for a ride at the airport in Dubai. When a cab pulled up, the first thing I noticed was that the taxi was polished to a bright shine. Smartly dressed in a white shirt, black tie, and freshly pressed black slacks, the cab driver jumped out and rounded the car to open the back passenger door for me.

He handed me a laminated card and said: ‘I’m Abdul, your driver. While I’m loading your bags in the trunk I’d like you to read my mission statement.’

Taken aback, I read the card. It said: Abdul’s Mission Statement:
To get my customers to their destination in the quickest, safest and cheapest way possible in a friendly environment.

This blew me away. Especially when I noticed that the inside of the cab matched the outside. Spotlessly clean!

As he slid behind the wheel, Abdul said, ‘Would you like a cup of coffee? I have a thermos of regular and one of decaf.’

I said jokingly, ‘No, I’d prefer a soft drink.’

Abdul smiled and said, ‘No problem. I have a cooler up front with regular and Diet Coke, lassi, water and orange juice.’

Almost stuttering, I said, ‘I’ll take a Lassi.’

Handing me my drink, Abdul said, ‘If you’d like something to read, I have The NST , Star and Sun Today.’

As they were pulling away, Abdul handed me another laminated card, ‘These are the stations I get and the music they play, if you’d like to listen to the radio.’

And as if that weren’t enough, Abdul told me that he had the air conditioning on and asked if the temperature was comfortable for me.

Then he advised me of the best route to my destination for that time of day. He also let me know that he’d be happy to chat and tell me about some of the sights or, if I preferred, to leave me with my own thoughts.

‘Tell me, Abdul ,’ I was amazed and asked him, ‘have you always served customers like this?’

Abdul smiled into the rear view mirror. “No, not always. In fact, it’s only been in the last two years. My first five years driving, I spent most of my time complaining like all the rest of the cabbies do. Then I heard about POWER OF CHOICE one day.”

Power of choice is that you can be a duck or an eagle.

‘If you get up in the morning expecting to have a bad day, you’ll rarely disappoint yourself. Stop complaining!’

‘Don’t be a duck. Be an eagle. Ducks quack and complain. Eagles soar above the crowd.’

‘That hit me. really hard’ said Abdul.

‘I take it that it has paid off for you,’ I said.

‘It sure has,’ Abdul replied. ‘My first year as an eagle, I doubled my income from the previous year. This year I’ll probably quadruple it. My customers call me for appointments on my cell phone or leave a message on it.’

Abdul made a different choice. He decided to stop quacking like a duck and start soaring like an eagle.

Start becoming an eagle today … one small step every week … the next week… And the next.

“You don’t die if you fall in water, you die only if you don’t swim.”

Thats the Real Meaning of Life.

Symptoms of a stye include:

pain and swelling
increased tear production
a crust that forms around the eyelid
soreness and itchiness
If your stye isn’t painful, it may be a chalazion. Treatments for chalazions and styes are similar, but a chalazion may take longer to heal.

Here are eight ways to speed up the healing process for styes.

1. Use a warm compress
A warm compress is the most effective way to treat a stye. The warmth helps bring the pus to the surface and dissolve the pus and oil so the stye can drain naturally.

Wet a clean washcloth with warm water. Make sure the water is not too hot. Wring the cloth so it’s damp but not dripping. Then gently place it over your eye for about 5 to 10 minutes. Do not squeeze or try to puncture the stye.

You can do this 3 to 4 times each day.

2. Clean your eyelid with mild soap and water
Choose a tear-free baby shampoo and mix it with a bit of warm water. Use it to gently wipe off your eyelids using a cotton swab or clean washcloth. You can do this every day until the stye is gone. Cleaning your eyelids also helps prevent future styes.

Another option is to use a saline solution. It can help promote drainage and break down bacterial membranes.

3. Use a warm tea bag
Instead of using a warm cloth compress, you can use a warm tea bag. Black tea works best because it helps reduce swelling and has some antibacterial properties.

Boil water and drop the tea bag in a mug of it as if you were making tea to drink. Let the tea steep for about one minute. Wait until the tea bag cools enough to place over your eye, then keep it on your eye for about 5 to 10 minutes. Use a separate tea bag for each eye.

4. Take over-the-counter painkillers
Take ibuprofen or acetaminophen (Tylenol) to ease pain. Follow the instructions on the package to make sure you’re taking the correct dosage. If the stye is causing serious pain and interferes with your day-to-day activity, visit your doctor.

5. Avoid using makeup and wearing contact lenses
Avoid using makeup if you have a stye. Makeup can irritate the eye even more and delay the healing process. You can also transfer bacteria to your makeup and tools and spread the infection to your other eye.

Wash your reusable brushes regularly. Throw out any eye products that are over three months old.

If you wear contact lenses, stick with glasses until your stye heals. Bacteria from the stye can get onto the contacts and spread the infection.

6. Use antibiotic ointments
You can buy over-the-counter stye ointments at your pharmacy. To use these ointments, pull the lid of the affected eye and apply about a quarter-inch of ointment inside the eyelid.

Avoid using topical steroids for your stye. They may cause side effects. Make sure that any product you use is made to be used in or on the eye. Also, there is little evidence that antibiotic eye drops work for external styes.

7. Massage the area to promote drainage
You can massage the area in combination with the lid wipes to promote drainage. Massage the area gently with clean hands. Once the stye drains, keep the area clean and avoid touching your eyes. Stop if massaging hurts.

8. Get medical treatment from your doctor
Your doctor may also prescribe an antibiotic cream for infections. For inflammation, your doctor may give you a steroid shot to reduce swelling. Sometimes styes need to be professionally drained, especially if they are internal or affect your vision.

A Talk by Ágnes Kőry, Director of the Béla Bartók Centre for Musicianship (London)

Judith Pisar has devoted her career to building cultural bridges across the Atlantic. As President of Arts France-USA, an organization committed to cultural exchange between the two countries, she regularly produces concerts and festivals of American music in Paris – including tributes to Leonard Bernstein, George Gershwin, Broadway, Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong. Prior to that she served for 17 years as Chairman of the American Center of Paris, the avant-garde meeting place for French and American artists. In that capacity she selected Frank Gehry to design a new building in 1988 – one of his first in Europe. Described by Philip Johnson as “America’s Cultural Czarina in Europe,” she has also served on the French Ministry of Culture’s Conseil Supérieur du Mécénat, on the board of the Régine Chopinot Ballet and as a founding signatory of the World Charter against Cancer. Earlier in her career, she served as Director of Music at the Brooklyn Academy, Executive Director of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company and founded The Composer Speaks, a lecture bureau which brought some of the greatest composers of the 20th Century — Pierre Boulez, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Iannis Xenakis, John Cage, Luciano Berio and others — to cities and universities throughout the United States. She is an Officer of the French Legion of Honor and a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters.
Performers
Vilmos Szabadi (violin)
Mr. Szabadi is Hungary’s foremost violinist, a regular soloist and frequent guest artist in the most prestigious concert halls around the world. Vilmos Szabadi studied at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music of Budapest where on receiving his diploma, he became the youngest ever to join the Professors’ team. His career as an international Concert violinist took off when he played Bartók 2nd Violin Concerto during the Bartók Festival at the Royal Festival Hall in London. The success of this Concert, led to invitations from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra as well. Mr. Szabadi was also among the privileged musicians invited by HRH Prince Charles to perform at the celebration in honor of Sir Georg Solti’s 80th birthday held at the Buckingham Palace in 1992. In 1993 the prestigious “Franz Liszt” prize has been awarded to Vilmos Szabadi by the Hungarian Government. In 1995 he also appeared on the Stradivarius series, played the Strad violin owned by Spanish Royalty in Madrid. Mr. Szabadi is a recent double prize winner of the renowned MIDEM Festival in Cannes, France. He plays a cremonese Laurentius STORIONI instrument dated 1778.

Mariann Marczi (piano)
Mariann Marczi started playing piano at the age of four and now she holds a PhD from Franz Liszt Academy of Budapest, where she is a Professor. Ms. Marczi is a winner of many national and international awards, scholarships and piano competitions. She performed almost in every country in Europe, and she is also a frequent guest artist at many music festivals, such as the Bartók Festival; Prague-Wien-Budapest Festival etc. Her repertoire includes a wide range of works from early Baroque to contemporary music. Ms. Marczi turns with particular attention towards the works of J. S. Bach, Béla Bartók and György Kurtág. Since 2012 she is also a member of the World Piano Teachers Association and she often participates as lecturer at international conferences, such as the World Piano Conference (Novi Sad, Serbia) and the London International Piano Symposium.
Eszter Karasszon (cello)
Eszter Karasszon is a young Hungarian cellist, student at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music of Budapest. She is already a winner of many national and international awards, such as the Dohnányi Chamber Competition (2013) and the VI. David Popper Competition (2015). In 2010 she has been granted a scholarship giving her the possibility to participate in a master class of Indiana String Academy to Janos Starker. Ms. Karasszon has not only performed in Hungary but in many European countries and in the United States as well.
Ágnes Kőry (talk)
Hungarian-born Ágnes Kőry is a graduate of the Béla Bartók Conservatoire Budapest, Royal Academy of Music London (DipRAM) and University of London (MPhil). An ex-professional cellist, she focuses on research into a variety of fields (which include baroque string instruments, composers Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály, Holocaust history ). Ágnes Kőry presented her papers on musicological conferences (University of Edinburgh, University of London, University of Manchester, Institute of Musicology Budapest) . She is an author of many musicological journals such as the Galpin Society Journal, Studia Musicologica, Early Music, The Consort, Ethnomusicological Forum and Parlando. Ágnes Kőry’s scholarly papers are also published on a variety of scholarly websites in the United States, United Kingdom, Hungary and Israel. Ágnes Kőry is a regular contributor to classical music websites. Some people always amaze me – Gregory Gallo, a victim of severe brain trauma, yesterday completed his 50th marathon at age 68. Below are pics from mile 17 as well as the blistering cold of pre-race. He became very sick at mile 18, but arm and arm, he persevered just continuing to tell me not to let him quit. In just under 8 hours we crossed. Crazy awesome…. What an inspiration…. Some of the best parts of being alive are moments like these

In May 2003, Michael Nolte suffered 3rd and 4th degree burns on over 40% of his body when a truck struck the vehicle he was sitting in, setting off a massive explosion. Michael had been pulled over by a State Trooper on Interstate 70 in Kansas for driving too long in the passing lane. The veering truck hit the patrol car they were sitting in at full speed and caused an inferno that killed the officer almost immediately. Michael was pulled from the car by two strangers and spent the next 10 weeks in a Burn Unit ICU, where he endured countless surgeries and skin grafts to repair the extensive damage to his body. After 15 months of grueling rehabilitation, he was finally able to return to running his successful bridal salon. Mike Noltes story of recovery has inspired people across the United States.
