Women are at a higher risk of developing a certain type called primary biliary cholangitis ( bi·lee·ur·ee koh-lan-JIGH’-tuss (Jigh like High), or P-B-C, which if left untreated, can lead to liver transplant or even death.

Joining us today to learn more about P-B-C is Dr. Steven Flamm, a liver expert at Rush University Medical Center, and Rosetta who is living with P-B-C and has advice on how to become an advocate for your health.

Steven Flamm, MD, FAASLD, FACG, is a professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Digestive Diseases and Nutrition who is board certified in Gastroenterology and Transplant Hepatology.

Flamm cares for patients with acute or chronic liver disease, including patients with viral hepatitis, alcohol-related liver disease, fatty liver, autoimmune liver disease and patients with cirrhosis. He also cares for patients who require liver transplantation evaluation and who have hepatocellular carcinoma. Flamm is also helping to lead and build a robust clinical research program for patients with liver disease.

He believes in the importance of making care easily accessible, whether that is a thorough in-office consultation for patients with chronic liver disease, those in need of potential life-saving transplantation or by bringing tertiary care for patients to multiple locations in the community. Flamm is readily available to discuss any patients with liver-related issues or who require in-patient transfers with providers.

Rosetta is a loving wife and mom to five kids—plus three dogs and a cat. She is also living with a rare cholestatic liver disease called primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) and speaks about her experience in hopes of empowering others to advocate for their health.

Schizophrenia is a persistent and often disabling mental illness that affects how a person thinks, feels, and behaves. In 2020, there were nearly 2.8 million people in the U.S. impacted by schizophrenia, and it is one of the top causes of disability worldwide.

Schizophrenia is not a one-size-fits-all condition, and people often find themselves in a cycle of discontinuing and switching therapies. Studies have shown that approximately 40% of people with schizophrenia do not respond to therapy, and up to 60% experience a partial or inadequate improvement or intolerable side effects during therapy.

The FDA recently approved a new medication for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults, representing the first new class of medicine in more than 30 years. This new treatment option leverages a novel pathway and represents a new mechanistic approach to addressing the symptoms of schizophrenia.

Dr. Gus Alva, a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatry Association will be available to discuss the significance of this new treatment for adults living with schizophrenia and their care partners, and its potential to transform the treatment landscape.

He is a forensic psychiatric consultant for the Orange County Superior Court and a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

Dr. Alva received his medical degree from the Autonomous University of Guadalajara (UAG). Residency training was completed at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, where he served as chief resident during his final year of residency.

Dr. Alva has served as a principal investigator for the past 10 years conducting investigations in a myriad of neuropsychiatric conditions: Alzheimer’s and other dementias, depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder and psychotic conditions. As a clinician and investigator, Dr Alva’s focus is on the genetics, neuroimaging, and latest treatments available for each aforementioned condition, as well as aspects of ethnicity and their correlation within clinical situations. He has published numerous articles, and presents at both national and international meetings and conferences.

He is the immediate past-president of the Orange County Psychiatric Society. Dr. Alva is also a member of many professional organizations, including the American Medical Association, the Orange County Medical Association, the California Psychiatric Association, the American Board of Forensic Medicine, the American College of Forensic Examiners, the California Hispanic American Medical Association and the International Congress of Geriatric Psychopharmacology.

• have an eye condition called narrow-angle glaucoma

• have kidney problems

• are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known if COBENFY may harm your unborn baby. Tell your healthcare provider if you become pregnant or think you are pregnant during treatment with

Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a rare liver disease characterized by progressive inflammation and destruction of bile ducts, which may lead to fibrosis, cirrhosis, portal hypertension, specific cancers, and ultimately liver failure.1
PSC is estimated to affect 29,000 people in the United States and 236,000 people in Europe.2,3 Additionally, one in every 10,000 people worldwide is diagnosed with PSC.4 The median age at diagnosis is approximately 35 years, and approximately 70% of PSC patients have inflammatory bowel disease, principally ulcerative colitis.5,6
The cause of PSC is not completely understood but it is thought to stem from genetic as well as environmental factors. A significant symptom of PSC, 91% of patients suffer from a severe and unrelenting itch, clinically referred to as pruritus, which can deeply impact a person and their quality of life.7
As a former NCAA All-American Hockey Player, and three-time national champion with the University of Minnesota Duluth, Julianne Vasichek was at the top of her game when she was unexpectedly diagnosed with PSC. Although she had been experiencing unexplained symptoms for some time, including relentless itch, fatigue and abdominal pain, she never imagined the cause was a rare and debilitating disease.
Julianne spent the next seven years managing her disease and staying as active and healthy as possible. Due to the lack of effective treatments to manage her PSC, she underwent an emergency liver transplant. She has found that sharing her story, connecting with others, and spreading awareness bolstered her spirit and gave her a renewed sense of purpose. Drawing on her own experience, Julianne actively engages with other patients while advocating for increased research and PSC community connectivity. Julianne is thriving and is currently the Head Women’s Coach at the College of St. Scholastica in Minnesota.
There is a void of effective therapies for rare cholestatic liver diseases, such as PSC. However, with current ongoing research, there may be options in the future to combat the relentless itch that PSC patients experience other than a transplant.
Join Julianne and internationally trained hepatologist Gideon Hirschfield, FRCP, PhD, as they discuss PSC in an effort to raise awareness about the disease.

Liver cancer is the sixth most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide and third-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States.1,2 Hepatocellular carcinoma, or HCC, is the most common type of liver cancer, yet more than half of patients are diagnosed at advanced stages of the disease often when symptoms first begin to appear.3,4 Historically, the prognosis for advanced HCC has been poor, with only 7% of patients surviving up to five years after diagnosis.4

But today, there is reason for optimism. Advances in research and medical innovation are signaling a shift in patient expectations, offering hope for more time for patients navigating their unresectable HCC or uHCC diagnosis. Here to explain the progress being made in the treatment landscape is Dr Shroff [shrawf] with the University of Arizona Cancer Center.

BIO:
Rachna T. Shroff, MD, MS, FASCO, is associate director of Clinical Investigations and co-leader of the Gastrointestinal Clinical Research Team at the University of Arizona Cancer Center (UACC). She also is a professor with tenure in the Department of Medicine, Chief of the Division of Hematology and Oncology, and Medical Director for the Oncology Service Line. Dr. Shroff also served as Associate Dean for Clinical and Translational Research for the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson; 2021 – 2024. She came to UACC from MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, where she was on faculty from 2010-18 after completing her medical oncology fellowship there.
Research Interests
Dr. Shroff is a clinical and translational investigator focused on developing novel therapies for pancreatic and hepatobiliary cancers. She holds multiple positions nationally due to her expertise in these areas, including serving as the Hepatobiliary Subcommittee co-chair for the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG) and as Chair for GI ASCO 2025, a meeting sponsored by the American Society of Clinical Oncology focused on gastrointestinal cancers. Most recently, she was elected to serve on the ASCO Nominating Committee. She also is a member of the Scientific and Medical Advisory Board for the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation.

Dr. Shroff has led numerous clinical trials focusing on pancreaticobiliary tumors and is the national PI for SWOG 1815 which investigated a triplet chemotherapy regimen as a potential new standard of care for biliary cancers. This is based on a phase 2 study she led that is now published in JAMA Oncology. Dr. Shroff has been invited to speak at national and international meetings on topics related to targeted therapies for pancreatic and biliary cancers and has numerous peer-reviewed publications in this area.

A new children’s book is being released to help families impacted by breast cancer.

“The Adventure Jar: A Story of Magic for Families Living with Metastatic Breast Cancer” is intended for children ages three to eight. The book follows the story of a family affected by metastatic breast cancer as they discover that even through the challenges of their mom’s diagnosis – involving inevitable change, uncertainty and disappointment – there is magic to be found in time shared together.

Family life can be upended when a parent has cancer, and it can be difficult for parents to bear witness to the impact it can have on young children – creating a crucial need for resources to help navigate the challenging emotions that follow.

The Adventure Jar, led by Gilead Sciences, was created in collaboration with eight diverse members of the metastatic breast cancer (MBC) community and professionals, including a psychiatrist, to help families impacted by MBC.

Among these collaborators is Gilead Patient Ambassador Lauren Huffmaster. She was diagnosed with MBC at 37 years old and struggled with the emotional impact cancer had on her husband and three young daughters, who were two, four and six at the time. With more than 800,000 people diagnosed with liver cancer each year around the world, liver cancer incidence and death rates are on the rise. Death rates for chronic liver disease and cirrhosis in people aged 45 to 64 years in the United States increased by 31% between 2000 and 2015. The risk factors include human hepatitis B virus and human hepatitis C virus, chronic infections, cirrhosis, fatty liver disease and diabetes, alcoholic cirrhosis, as well as aflatoxin and aristolochic acid exposure. Currently, surgical resection is still the first line treatment, but the cancer comes back in about 70% of patients.

Increasing the Risk for Transmission
Hepatitis A is a highly-infectious virus that affects the liver and can lead to sickness, hospitalization and even death, in some cases. Infection with the virus can make someone very sick. Twenty-six US states are currently experiencing active hepatitis A outbreaks. In the current outbreaks, over 60% of people who contract it have required hospitalization.

October is Liver Awareness Month and a great time to talk about hepatitis A vaccination with your doctor or pharmacist. Since 2017, substantial increases in hepatitis A have occurred, with nearly 40,000 cases reported. While people who use drugs, people experiencing homelessness, and men who have sex with men are most often at risk, nearly one third of people with hepatitis A have no identified risk factor.
Hepatitis A patient Stan was 66 years old and in the best shape of his life, having just completed a half-marathon, when he contracted hepatitis A and his life was changed. He believes he contracted the virus through food at a restaurant. His symptoms began as mild and sporadic and felt like the flu, but as his symptoms of nausea continued he was rushed to the ER and told that his liver was failing. Stan underwent a liver transplant and fortunately is doing well today, but regrets not knowing that vaccination for hepatitis A is available.
85% adults in the US have not been vaccinated for Hepatitis A; creating opportunities for infection, as it can be transmitted person-to-person or through contaminated food or drink.
Foodborne outbreaks of the virus can occur when someone eats fresh and frozen food products that are contaminated with Hepatitis A. It can be transmitted where food is prepared and served by food handlers who may be infected with the virus.
Stories from real people affected by hepatitis A remind us why everyone, not just high-risk groups or travelers, should discuss vaccination with their healthcare provider.
