Last week, I shared a story about flying with my family after ten years of avoiding flights. It was a very personal and somewhat fragile story for me to share publicly. The discussion that followed reveals a deeper question facing the climate movement today: how do we accelerate the phase-out of fossil fuels while still allowing people the freedom to travel, connect, and explore the world? For this trip, we chose a non-fossil alternative by purchasing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) that matched the flight’s full fossil fuel use. On We Don’t Have Time, the discussion has been constructive, thoughtful, and respectful. Many people have also written very encouraging messages, saying they appreciate that I dare to talk openly about solutions that already exist in aviation, even if they are not yet perfect. On social media, outside our platform, some reactions have been much harsher. There has been strong criticism, and in some cases, personal attacks directed not only at me, but also at my family. That kind of tone does not move the climate conversation forward. At We Don’t Have Time we believe in dialogue. Solving the climate crisis will require many perspectives, honest conversations, and the ability to respectfully disagree while still working toward the same goal. At the same time, the intensity of the reaction tells us something important. When discussions about real solutions create strong emotions, it often means we are touching on one of the defining questions of the transition. Most people who care about the climate agree on the destination. But we do not always agree on the best path to get there. Different people who care deeply about the climate often come to different conclusions about the best path forward. The transition away from fossil fuels is not a simple or black-and-white question. That is exactly why open dialogue matters. So instead of talking past each other, let us ask the question openly. What do you think is the best way forward? 1. Reduce first We should sharply reduce consumption and mobility across society, phase out fossil fuels as fast as possible, and accept major lifestyle changes and sacrifices in the short term. Only once fossil fuels are largely eliminated should we scale technologies that allow higher levels of consumption again. ­ Vote ­ 2. Technology first We should focus primarily on scaling clean technologies as fast as possible. Innovation and markets will replace fossil fuels without requiring major limits on people’s lifestyles. ­ Vote ­ 3. Both together We should phase out fossil fuels while at the same time embracing and scaling non fossil solutions, even if they are not perfect yet. Regulation and innovation should move in parallel. ­ Vote ­ Vote and share your reasoning in the comments. We will publish the results next week. The goal is not that everyone agrees on every step. The goal is that we move forward together toward the same destination: a prosperous and fossil free future where humanity has learned to live within the planetary boundaries. This Debate Didn’t Start Last Week Neste, the world’s leading producer of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), has started producing SAF at its renewable products refinery in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The refinery has been modified to enable Neste to produce up to 500,000 tons of SAF per annum. As a result, Neste’s global SAF production capability has increased to 1.5 million tons (around 1.875 billion liters) per annum. Six months ago I wrote an op-ed in Sweden responding to a column celebrating record levels of air travel in Europe. My argument then was simple: the problem is not that people want to travel. The problem is that we still travel on fossil fuels. We don’t need to stop travelling. We need to stop travelling on oil. That requires phasing out fossil fuel subsidies while scaling fossil-free alternatives such as Sustainable Aviation Fuel, e-fuels, and electric aviation. On a longer timescale, however, they have pushed world leaders toward greater investment in energy independence. This latest crisis comes at a unique time for climate diplomacy:  André Corrêa do Lago, following up on commitments made during COP30, has just called for stakeholder contributions to the much anticipated roadmap for a transition away from fossil fuels. It is expected that these contributions will feed directly into the First Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels, to be held in Colombia this April. We’ve seen many energy shocks before but this time a diplomatic infrastructure exists that could guide the world to the only long-term solution to the never-ending energy crises: leaving fossil fuels for good. With that in mind this International Women’s Day, we are thrilled to be part of a vital convening of women’s climate leadership. On March 31, the Women’s Momentum Assembly for a Just Fossil Fuel Phaseout will bring together over 20 global leaders, including former Irish President Mary Robinson, Indigenous Brazilian congresswoman Célia Xakriabá, and youth climate leader Mitzi Jonelle Tan, in a free virtual gathering to build momentum ahead of the Colombia conference. The UN estimates that by 2050, climate change could push 158 million more women and girls into poverty. His footballing prowess soon brought him to the attention of the Station Manager and Saville was selected for The Royal Air Force Football Team which played matches against amateur and semi-professional German teams throughout the region. A great English Patriot, Saville said of his experience in the Air Force, “It was two of the happiest years of my life.”
When he left the RAF, Saville joined the firm of Esbee Gold, a manufacturer of Woman’s Fashions. He serviced retail and wholesale customers the length and breadth of Great Britain. At the same time he was offered a professional trial at Tottenham Hotspur but never went and joined the senior amateur football club Wingate FC, where for 10 years he topped the scoring ranks averaging 20-30 goals a season. The Great Britain selectors duly noted his talent and he was selected for the 1961 Maccabiah Games in Israel. He was top scorer during the tournament and Britain won its only ever Gold Medal with Saville scoring both goals against the host nation in a 2-1 victory in Haifa. The winning goal against Israel was probably the strangest one he ever scored. The ball was headed out of the box from a corner and as it bounced he back-heeled it hard on the half-volley from 20 yards out and it flew past the keeper into the top corner of the net. He won silver at the 1965 Maccabiah Games. Saville scored over 350 goals during his playing career.
Later in the 1960s he started his own fashion business in Commercial Road and for over 30 years brought his own creative innovations to the world of fashion. He married his beloved wife Sheila in 1966 just a few weeks before England won the World Cup and they were married for 53 years. After retiring from football he took up squash and made it to the final of the All-London Maccabi Open Championship. He later took up tennis and represented Great Britain Seniors in Spain and at the 1997 Maccabiah.
Into his eighties he was still super fit, swimming 80-100 lengths every day. Saville was respected and held in the highest esteem in the fashion industry and in the football world and by all those fortunate enough to have encountered this wonderful, kind, compassionate man. He never forgot his humble beginnings in East London. In December 2019 he enjoyed one of his proudest moments, accompanying his wife of 53 years Sheila and daughter in law Mary to Buckingham Palace to watch his son Jason’s MBE investiture by Prince William, for services to Football Education and Youth with Disabilities. In keeping with his father’s legacy of giving and community spirit, Jason has launched The Covid Comfort Angels initiative to bring comfort and solace to those who are also mourning and have relatives in hospital. http://thejosephskakunproject.org/covid-comfort-angels/ Saville Shela had the ability to bring out the best attributes in everyone he met in sports and in life, he truly was a man for all seasons.

1. Pingtang Telescope, China

The Pingtang telescope was completed in September 2016, becoming the world’s largest radio telescope in the process.
Its dish measures more than 1,600 feet across and is capable of capturing signals more than 1,000 light years from earth.

2. Gotthard Base Tunnel, Switzerland

The world’s longest and deepest rail tunnel became operational in December 2016. It is 35 miles long, took 17 years to construct, and lies 6,500 feet below the Gotthard Massif, a mountain range within the Swiss Alps.

3. Panama Canal, Panama

The original Panama Canal, which was constructed more than 100 years ago, is one of the Modern Wonders of the World, but a century of progress meant that it had to be widened. Some 40,000 workers worked on the expansion project, and the completed canal opened in 2016 at a cost of $5.4 billion.

4. The Bride Skyscraper, Iraq

Who ever thought such a proposal would be possible? The 3,779-foot-tall “Bride” skyscraper is proposed for construction in Basra, Iraq.

If the name sounds familiar, it’s the site of the first battle of the 2003 US invasion.

The design is covered with solar panels, so the skyscraper will be able to power itself. It will also be the world’s tallest building if (when?) completed in 2026.

5. Jiaozhou Bay Bridge, China

This 26-mile-long cross-sea bridge is the longest of its kind in the world, stretching almost 26 miles out into the open ocean.

When it opened, it cut the travel time for people traveling between east China and the island of Huangdao in half.

6. Itaipu Dam, Brazil

Completed more than 30 years ago, this hydroelectric dam produces more power than any other in the world.

In fact, its energy generation is so large that it supplies Paraguay with 75% and Brazil with 20% of their energy needs respectively.

7. Crossrail Project, London

The largest construction project ever undertaken in Europe will see 10 new train lines added to the existing London Underground system,

and 30 existing stations connected via brand-new tunnels. It will begin service in 2017, and be in full operation by 2020.

8. Hyderabad Metro Rail, India

This railway system marks the first time that communication-based train control will be implemented in India.

With three brand-new metro lines for the city of Hyderabad, the network is set to open in 2017.

9. Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, China

More than 42 million people live in China’s Pearl River Delta, and this gargantuan project will link its three major cities,

namely Zhuhai, Macau and Hong Kong, via a series of bridges and underwater tunnels. It will open to traffic in December 2017.

10. Mall of the World, Dubai

The proposal for the largest mall on earth comprises more than 48 million square feet of enclosed, air-conditioned luxury in the middle of the desert.

As part of the design, the largest indoor game park in the world will be constructed, as will 20,000 hotel rooms to cater to the 180 million annual visitors

that the development is expected to receive when completed in 2029.

12. Riyadh Metro, Saudi Arabia

This $23.5 billion rail line will boast a flagship station designed by world-famous architect, Zaha Hadid.

Operation is scheduled to begin in 2019, and the railway will have 109 miles of railway on completion, revolutionizing how the residents of Riyadh get around.

13. Songdo Smart City, South Korea

Built on 1,500 acres of reclaimed land along the waterfront of the South Korean city of Incheon, this smart city

was completed in 2015. Home to some 67,000 residents, it has near-comprehensive internet access and offers a taste of future urban life.

14. South-North Water Transfer Project, China

The Chinese have set about moving some 45 billion cubic feet of water from the mighty Yangtze River in the south of the country,

to the more arid industrialized north. They will do so via three canals and have spent some $79 billion on the project thus far.

15. Sognefjord Submerged Floating Tunnel, Norway

Perhaps the most intriguing of all the projects on this list is a Norwegian proposal for building a $25 billion submerged

floating tunnel beneath the Sognefjord, the largest Fjord in Norway, which is 3,000 feet wide and 4,000 feet deep.

This radical tunnel will be the first of its kind in the world if the vision is realized.

16. Urban Renewal Project, Turkey

Turkey has incredible ambitions for renewing its urban areas. Over the next 20 years, the country plans to demolish more than

7 million buildings and build earthquake-resistant, modern structures in their place.
The colossal cost of all this is estimated at $400 billion.
