<p>Average U.S. gasoline prices hit $3.98 per gallon on Tuesday, according to AAA, on the cusp of a level that was last hit when Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.</p>
<p>The last month has seen the second-largest gas price spike in three decades, with <a class="yiv3717956996m_2489319260858629204css-sdwaa1" href="https://nl.nytimes.com/f/newsletter/SJEjMoh5B73-xzMV6a-cjQ~~/AAAAARA~/3HGAsOy087Tjj5TS9sSSFDSD2jU0biJwkU1g99Kl87w5BiM_6hzRBEcmmTyhtAIAiAsyQf7Az0vHzJkVE3EUF1ngWUsVsS35cFF_-baRKmQ1wIVSWZ1zgxSOH8dsims1xMvDRz4eXvCLi_1RMxu8OsxoQX76RJB5U1o6g-gybvOqBvuL0Qwx4OsKq7nGDXUKUFCQYxJ12-FIib4sTz4_NQ~~" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">average prices climbing more than 30 percent</a> since the war in Iran effectively shuttered the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway that conveys up to a fifth of the world’s oil.</p>
<p>Though there’s no hard and fast rule that dictates exactly what choices consumers make at $4, $5, and $6 per gallon, higher gas prices are already stressing household budgets. At $4 per gallon, more than half of Americans said they’d change their driving behavior, according to a 2022 survey by AAA. <a class="yiv3717956996m_2489319260858629204css-sdwaa1" href="https://nl.nytimes.com/f/a/2wpF3x23Go9ZI6eQxvwi2g~~/AAAAARA~/0Wjw7Nu49yLIWSnekZbTPTGX5GuXHYNBVxDlK2v0ne_gyTjguv-UCIjRJMdyEboZ4LJ7x9SHaNvjNwJK4AK-Yc8pif09xwL2pRXXNvWNsmQsz2UBvxcJFW3LH4Sbzs4zmQA0HblGdcpdMUg5hRyVcJB9j5B0ip_3vvRbqjhKm41onlOdRXxJvyHzRqtOOerwkp6frZrfRwReuiCdJH0wE73HwrIgnjH7U16Z5Lhoals~" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">More recent data</a> has also shown that Americans are delaying some forms of spending.</p>
<p>The energy shock has hit Asia hardest: The Philippines declared a state of emergency on Tuesday, and President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said grounding planes because of a <a class="yiv3717956996m_2489319260858629204css-sdwaa1" href="https://nl.nytimes.com/f/a/YaqkfXpQt9Uf_XBkz13uyA~~/AAAAARA~/PQRfJOUzm-TXB7I8Ef8Dv-39CqGO1hlqynToWxl_UCt2l4sVw7AlHyrCISvf6mUC5JETryXy7yRgG85ps-mNzszv13npXUFAhny07y3nN3uJH7qcaDFHyEygZ9VfCukfDnUfksl6LQpsucJYN5Uv6-ytq_3tdIiga2SLpaNjzlNbX-QtH7st3iiMiQyGEj_qYcs81Ns-TGPd1abeIbUTBG8QNRtId4qFUwY6LfnsDyyNad2GuS3UMrHraICsgpIVw9_JfCO2_EoxQxmnkfwQxQ~~" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">jet fuel shortage was a “distinct possibility.”</a> South Korea is urging citizens to <a class="yiv3717956996m_2489319260858629204css-sdwaa1" href="https://nl.nytimes.com/f/newsletter/btCNMIcjOxUOaUx4o98zrA~~/AAAAARA~/XsBRuG4VD6Xff5nSHEE4if3BED7IMFtWNcOYKx9p29jBvQ9rcq7VymXu_Kgc8pvLmncjwt5kZ9NZt4jEl8GEce4E9njo-Qze4xNkA8-KJZd60G2Rb0PJM2B03A7uzWWE3fjXa0PKoin4RLwvaO4XrnyIXl4ZBOjLWk2zecENF-0DLgQUKZ8PJFd7PowsvLRIzu1vV-uwvF2uotYFOAIS36zfi5R9QSXa6CDLTha3vFg~" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">ride bicycles instead of driving</a>.</p>
<p>Transportation, of course, is the single-largest source of planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions in the United States, and a big contributor globally. Here’s what we know about how a long period of high gas prices could change how willing people are to drive gas-powered vehicles, both here and abroad.</p>
<h3>Driving less, window-shopping</h3>
<p>Already, Americans are looking for ways to cut back. In New Orleans, <a class="yiv3717956996m_2489319260858629204css-sdwaa1" href="https://nl.nytimes.com/f/newsletter/86ZRu4wDJGhowOQPmUhyfg~~/AAAAARA~/5R4ytZe8hoJBJbExY6CSjKwPc6uPhPqFyhs4PLx8SYAh5P9mRnxqZx3u-mahlDTUMkIa7LvQMY6eynuFjFM0gaET8znb3gGm28-jmPoGMTPSnyrK7j8WE9aD5uNCXZnzHMUWqon15_I3jinYx5bq73avdKbhLUE9CURpFBbJlZzT4WzTWmSyrx0TXalqy1VYi3Zm9LOPgEo_YXDJgI65Yyyjn6sv9o1i-he1QE-y7To~" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">drivers are lining up</a> at gas stations with the best prices. Michele Tafoya, a Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate in Minnesota, encouraged people to take “<a class="yiv3717956996m_2489319260858629204css-sdwaa1" href="https://nl.nytimes.com/f/newsletter/-JDRSUBhjLs96bAbhuqq1A~~/AAAAARA~/zXpzU69vsiYwdSvB_6W3RdFUtnYi9Cb6SUVbL67zfQEpVsgXI3db9zy6KfS86aI7xEkXs8U4G2_08RkZdVXjB3whO36dzkbXQADNEWrI33Lgo3w9GMLF7xQz9XFr6nJwGj0VMeY9dHLPLIwsKbOUwi5nvAa-Xg5nDqZyaAL3yUmfjVJ79Sr8LUSY92k0RnkemQ2MEY19-prnU1ghNeYJBA6Vu8N5X0XpwxivO4g6uMn9yR_ShnhC4TibpKZxPhOSkU1XsC_sti5UZUvy5P8l1A~~" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">one less trip to Starbucks</a>.” The state of Georgia has implemented a fuel tax holiday, waiving a 33-cent-per-gallon tax.</p>
<p>When gas prices spike, drivers tend to respond by cutting out unnecessary trips, by car-pooling and using public transportation, according to AAA. Spending on <a class="yiv3717956996m_2489319260858629204css-sdwaa1" href="https://nl.nytimes.com/f/newsletter/4ORhM4JLV4GtmUsgQRhhmA~~/AAAAARA~/Ed9G_2grpkiVoM3n25Un1EbCNRFO7KE3zSjz6ttnJU_a3WD-m9WN_BgAVvXQ1zB1Gv_ihiFajo6jnycuZ0rCgytNWan-e5CEKQvn1m50TxP_ThpDupNfooDaLKyryYu6-an5J7mBM8ws1-RAsfSX4pjzgFU5s9h5fSDosJSyjW8Laf8LrTzN17zmSYKD2xNW1KSz0_opXnb-wz2WfyE5xfah3Dg86YaaAEsdPdhG06gQhoYcvJInS0usgYuVtjU9_559cLXFC1XQjAiqsP8Pew~~" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">discretionary expenses</a> like plane tickets and restaurant meals has fallen, too, as transportation costs eat up a bigger share of household budgets.</p>
<p>Yet while plenty of people who own electric vehicles have been boasting about their fuel savings on social media over the last few weeks, gas prices would have to stay high for a much longer period of time to trigger a broader shift away from gas-powered vehicles, according to Stephanie Valdez Streaty, research and development director at Cox Automotive, a research firm.</p>
<p>Still, the war in Iran appears to have driven a modest uptick in E.V. curiosity among U.S. drivers, according to the <a class="yiv3717956996m_2489319260858629204css-sdwaa1" href="https://nl.nytimes.com/f/a/r-Q-nV8V_mdPyVOPUxE0yw~~/AAAAARA~/0EuBlVd4J82hgY5ADueZ8fsFZl6rdJuhBm0Fi4dJYFbMheXUxcaaYrjWi8wopGqaMU1jP555LLsrV43msgzYnhrv50vvC19fBCp1SIgmzh9DonQ8ullgC4lRZ8_as3c8bnHeRhROW6IPqLNG8eo5w6-pd_x0W0r2Wyg_Lml6vO6wAIhVN2MYe42gAqiDBOPpmx73ERSdgwbrAud-BZ5kDbdEeBgGU-TZh-TCgqTbbfLNW_3g9XsyBD4Urh-rReb8" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">car shopping site Edmunds</a>. If high prices persist, more people may feel the urge to hop off what Jessica Caldwell, the head of insights at Edmunds, called the “<a class="yiv3717956996m_2489319260858629204css-sdwaa1" href="https://nl.nytimes.com/f/newsletter/viS2MS0aSyCDehXtmoesaQ~~/AAAAARA~/M7UTdLnlp_SbTKWUf_U-NYucLR8zL0S8n2Sqns4eExOQ4ayDKCOHiQM4Pep5_Azk48yPnbJlEqkO8wKX5eSL1XezsIMqg_DwWeQUBjUGQP3tcvx_mWK9c74V4G4JOTq409u4VQXK9nobvnREjTbLgAJASscsZOFgyil0wMrXqIeMWCRqb0iqUA_-dAzqL87Ld-ERmSHZ16sg4WxeUa5X85FNXd4gKBfTm0X4eKWYFKZzl6xzyHEF1SfNmSJxP4p3mXgFXFR-2qkvLe0BWZ1ZkA~~" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">gas price roller coaster</a>.”</p>
<p>New E.V.s in the U.S. are still more expensive than gas-powered cars, but the gap is closing for used vehicles. In February, the average listing price for a used E.V. was $34,821, about $1,300 more than a gas-powered car, Valdez Streaty said.</p>
<p>Hundreds of thousands more used E.V.s could enter the market this year as leases expire, Valdez Streaty said. “Consumers are going to have a lot of good options at a lower price point,” she said.</p>
<h3>The global E.V. tipping point</h3>
<p>If you’re curious about buying whether the economics of buying an E.V. are in your favor, The Times has a <a class="yiv3717956996m_2489319260858629204css-sdwaa1" href="https://nl.nytimes.com/f/newsletter/UAOehbsMAGHvgP80SPjoPA~~/AAAAARA~/7dP4Gf3ltYusWrnNwTqPgaKI6puXojnvZhFNA9u0CDjSywp3SGoL27JIs4ruEMAKKyppHGpiR43k_0qHzHLGqs-pBlJ9THjp4LPL1vSnl-AyeuLBd_lfVTKVC8yNk2vWin7IInWrujlgMxV2egbDLbRhtDP__M7st-CE98YWGTk4mKb4mtQT8xJvpQ9GTzXLDC0wQAmIA-F2ADQX0rmHg4pUEPrcwPTsI51qE0LK6AE~" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">calculator that can help</a>. The math looks very different abroad, where gas price shocks have been more intense and E.V.s are often far more affordable than in the U.S.</p>
<p>The scales could <a class="yiv3717956996m_2489319260858629204css-sdwaa1" href="https://nl.nytimes.com/f/a/ClsL_Vt6DjNxcqeOuTN22w~~/AAAAARA~/b-hwU7ak_Ana2A3_Hp5Cfp03HemJ2eih5HfTcVhbFJ8gRHKs9ZrHMpqOGeuhfmv6bgGxlY66e2fXEPYss_blvHp4rZayVoOVToAiKkViK0O6h1p4kSMomoZBEJz2R-9t6frwZ4lPnDK6e4AZzuL2FDZHJ3iX7NYXN1KKERpNmAn72qNsU_f33yGAvLmTh9FXTF0b0xcgBtGBTLXrIBtDLXWMUtr8HEyUGSJAlZ6DUlFlS7fpHo9DG5OetSuyBMpd" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">tip fastest in countries with access to inexpensive Chinese E.V.s</a>, like Brazil, parts of Asia and soon, Canada, wrote David Brown, the director of energy transition research at Wood McKenzie.</p>
<p>In Vietnam, for example, gas prices have <a class="yiv3717956996m_2489319260858629204css-sdwaa1" href="https://nl.nytimes.com/f/a/hs02rheaeF9TjLnxGxTKYg~~/AAAAARA~/9N6g9TcnAYtk-lnYAtrXV3dCKQLdcLIpfRY1QiHVMUJXllhhAeXhjmzkbC2C5GAgMuCrgcowyEM5ABhaGmRzRw_kqQ_vpZJsl9Oo0BUZnjtqxd9o3jh-moI0sT_-SnbsZMgDn0RZ_WYnz4hbwyZmEInkkZKvLLMsAEyLn-0tJwM8523zBhoeUOzr1itMitVyYr8FjmaaKB3BORpGThqVFMYQEc8QjagT9IUTDqxGy7hPqRNlL_V3f0cbZxjY9KY7GeSAGWmCbb9GaA97RaUPZR4z595XgxBz7rs2ko9iUysBdNUA5dw2VhOGPnlJWvkQdgVz79t29jn5E2fPOL8R6w~~" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">risen by around 30 percent</a> since the start of the conflict. But the increase coincides with a <a class="yiv3717956996m_2489319260858629204css-sdwaa1" href="https://nl.nytimes.com/f/newsletter/MMYgQxdWXlpDgJnhNCj82g~~/AAAAARA~/kyeo8RFPtvsThFytdr7zURIU5GtoGu5vH0fahio_W5duw8FIJEviPxuuNJ73v_xn_pFKjjmY3SZchYMUgbUpkH6LLmWsTWsOaLMnbwyk79J6w3DjmgsT53jLQgzsy-DzwYpl7AdEAuJqv8Lxm5h87e2uJE0isjVAF1bRKNCGL05_OYnC387Rdb2UR6XBcrcktzO2uTKgo1zCEi8fhvGp6zGyhX6EH7bkz5g_rJwFDfA~" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">rapid increase in the share of electric cars sold each year</a> as government incentives meet affordable options from local manufacturers.</p>
<p>In December, the Vietnamese E.V. maker VinFast broke records when it reported the highest monthly sales volume ever recorded by any automaker in the country. Its best-selling car last year, the VF 3, hit the market in 2024 at just under $13,000.</p>

Called Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD), When Advanced, It’s the Leading Cause of Amputations Worldwide<br />
and Results in High Rates of Fatal and Non-Fatal Cardiovascular Events2,3<br />
Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a common chronic circulatory condition that often goes undiagnosed and undertreated.1 In fact, PAD impacts an estimated 20 million Americans,4 yet only 8.5 million are diagnosed.5 If left untreated, PAD can increase the risk of serious health outcomes such as heart attack, stroke, acute limb ischemia or even a lower limb amputation.6 Despite being largely preventable, amputations can be a devastating complication of PAD associated with high mortality.3<br />
Earlier this year, the American Heart Association (AHA) issued a charge to reduce nontraumatic lower-extremity amputations by 20% by 2030. Despite a steady decline in the rate of amputations in two previous decades, the amputation rate among patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) and diabetes – the patient group among the highest risk for lower extremity amputations – increased by 50% over a span of only six years (from 2009 to 2015) and the rate of amputations continues to rise in the U.S.3<br />
Further, significant health disparities exist in the prevalence, diagnosis and care of patients with PAD. For example, Black Americans – who have a higher prevalence of asymptomatic PAD, less access to quality vascular care,6 and are at risk for delays in care8 – are up to 4x more likely to have an amputation as a result of PAD compared to White Americans.3<br />
Serious outcomes, including lower-extremity amputation, cannot be effectively prevented if its leading cause, PAD, is not diagnosed and managed.6 By elevating PAD awareness and increasing access to screening and treatment, both patients and physicians can be empowered to better understand the symptoms of PAD, seek care at the optimal time, and have the right conversations at their visits to help reduce the chance of serious outcomes.5<br />
Dr. Geoffrey Barnes, cardiologist, vascular medicine specialist, and faculty member at the University of Michigan Frankel Cardiovascular Center and Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation, to discuss the importance of early identification, intervention and management of PAD.<br />
