We are excited to announce a groundbreaking partnership with The Mark Foundation for Cancer Research (MFCR). Together, we are launching a global initiative to fund innovative research projects exploring the complex connection between aging and cancer.

Later this month we will be inviting leading scientists from across the globe to submit novel research proposals that are focused in this field.

Selected projects will receive $500,000 in funding over three years, during which time, SWCRF along with MFCR, plan to invest up to $11 million into specific aging-cancer research.

This significant financial commitment underscores our organization’s shared dedication to advancing pioneering science and tackling cancer’s toughest challenges.

Since, aging is the leading cause of cancer development and progression, as well as poses many treatment challenges, this area of research is crucial to combating the global rise in cancer incidence and improving outcomes for all cancer patients.

These research projects will address critical topics such as:

Identifying actionable biomarkers that predict aging/cancer risk.

Understanding how aging impacts tumor growth.

Exploring the role of the aging immune system in cancer treatment.

Investigating how metabolism and genetics contribute to cancer development.

Studying how premature aging increases cancer risk for younger adults.

By supporting this program, SWCRF is further cementing its international leadership in addressing one of the most urgent challenges in cancer prevention and treatment today.

Your continuing support makes this possible. Please consider donating today to help fund this and other vital research programs.

CLINICAL BREAKTHROUGHS

New Treatment for Liver Cancer Slows Progression and

Improves Survival

A recent study by SWCRF-investigator, Dr. Josep Llovet (Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai), and colleagues has discovered a new treatment approach for unresectable,

non-metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)—a form of liver cancer that cannot be surgically removed and has not yet spread to other parts of the body. Around 45,000 cases of HCC are diagnosed yearly in the US and about 1M globally.

According to their research, published in The Lancet (January 2025), combining transarterial chemoembolisation (TACE) with the drugs lenvatinib (a targeted therapy) and pembrolizumab (an immunotherapy) significantly improved patient outcomes compared to the placebo group.

Specifically, patients receiving this combination therapy experienced slower tumor progression and a trend towards overall higher survival rates. Additionally, the drug combination was well-tolerated, with manageable side effects, supporting its potential as a viable treatment option in patients with intermediate HCC.

“SWCRF has been instrumental in supporting the development of the HCC program at Mount Sinai since 2004. Their commitment to funding innovative cancer research has allowed us to make these significant strides in understanding and treating this devastating disease. This breakthrough would not have been possible without their continued support”, said Dr Josep M Llovet, Professor of Medicine and Director of the Liver Cancer Program at the Ichan School of Medicine.

This remarkable improvement marks the first clinical breakthrough in treating this challenging and often fatal form of cancer in more than 20 years.

Breakthrough Identifies Drivers of Bladder Cancer Progression

A new study published in Nature Genetics by SWCRF investigators, Drs. Jonathan Rosenberg and Yu Chen (Memorial Sloan Kettering) has uncovered how superficial, non-invasive bladder cancer progresses to more aggressive, life-threatening forms.

Drs. Chen and Rosenberg identified an epigenetic program responsible for this transformation, revealing new therapeutic targets to prevent the disease’s spread.

“This discovery is of clinical importance and will improve patient outcomes for those with bladder cancer,” said Dr. Waxman. “SWCRF is immensely grateful for the extraordinary support from the Gladstein Family Foundation, whose generous supported created the SWCRF Bladder Cancer Research Program.”

This discovery underscores the power of donor-supported research to make significant strides against cancer.

Dear Friends and Lovers of the Earth,

Sending again for those who didn’t see this but are interested and haven’t yet registered! https://landing.pachamama.org/gathering There will be a pull-down menu there with my name, so our Pachamama folks can register you at “my virtual table”!

We are at that time of year of harvest and celebration even despite the hardships and stresses we have all experienced in our Mother Earth being insulted by policies to promote further drilling, by the rolling back of clean water and air policies, the evisceration of the EPA, serious encroachments on social, political and economic injustice and by the profound disregard for sentient life over these past several years.

Despite and because of all of this, we have doubled-down in our commitment to set things aright, and one of our ways of doing that, and gaining sustenance from other, like-minded, like-hearted people, is our relationship to each other of course and with the Pachamama Alliance who has been championing the cause of indigenous people in the Amazon Rainforest, the Rainforest itself, and justice of every sort across the planet.

Please watch this inspiring, 1-minute video: https://pachamama.wistia.com/medias/qgcg0db4di

And then register for our Virtual Luncheon this year right here—I’d love to have you. https://landing.pachamama.org/gathering

Because this year’s gathering is virtual, not just in NYC, I am inviting people who wouldn’t otherwise be able to attend, for an even bigger, more inclusive & Global turnout.

Positive Influences: Pachamama Alliance & The Tibet House – A Better World

And needless to say, I hope everyone receiving this has voted or is poised to. We need a landslide!

If you would, please send me an email to let me know if you’ve signed up to attend.

Looking forward to seeing you soon!

Eleanor Holmes Norton.
(NEW YORK, NEW YORK – June 18th, 2019) The Women’s Forum of New York hosted the 9th Annual Elly Awards Luncheon benefiting The Education Fund of the Women’s Forum on Monday, June 17th, at The Plaza Hotel in New York City. The awards, named for the Women’s Forum founder Elinor Guggenheimer, honor outstanding women leaders. This year marked the 32nd anniversary of the Education Fund of the Women’s Forum, which has helped over 260 women, age 35 and over, whose lives have been disrupted by extreme adversity, complete their college degrees.
The 2019 Elly Award Recipients were:

Katie Couric, award winning journalist, producer, New York Times bestselling author, cancer advocate, podcast host, documentary filmmaker, and former co-anchor of the Today Show on NBC.

Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, representative for the District of Columbia and former Professor of Law at Georgetown University.

Muriel Fox, Board Chair of Veteran Feminists of America and former Executive Vice-President of Carl Byoir & Associates.

Linda A. Willett, President of the Women’s Forum of New York, gave opening remarks and introduced Barbara Marcus, President of the Education Fund, who discussed the Education Fund and introduced this year’s Education Fellows.

Mika Brzezinski, MSNBC Co-Host of Morning Joe and Founder, Know Your Value, gave keynote remarks.

This year’s Elly Award presenters were Linda A. Willett, who presented the Icon Award to Katie Couric in absentia; Marcy Syms, Vice President of the Women’s Forum, who presented the Elly Award to Muriel Fox; and Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney who presented the Elly Award to Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton.

Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney and Daryl Roth were Co-Chairs of the 2019 Elly Awards. Both women are past honorees of the Elly Award.

Cheryl Wills, Emmy Award winning anchor for Spectrum News NY1 Live at Ten and host of the public affairs talk show In Focus with Cheryl Wills, moderated a conversation on leadership with honoree Eleanor Holmes Norton following the presentation of the awards.

“The Women’s Forum of New York is comprised of the most accomplished and successful women in the city from every professional sector. We know from our own success how critical education is, so our Education Fund is one way we ‘give back’ – helping women age 35 and over whose lives have been disrupted by extreme adversity complete their education and get their lives back on track. We hope we inspire them, because their dreams, drive, and determination certainly inspire us.” – Linda A. Willett, President of the Women’s Forum of New York.

“The Education Fund of the Women’s Forum has transformed lives, influenced families, and improved communities. Launched thirty-two years ago to help other women realize their dream of a college education, The Education Fund has awarded over $1.8 million in financial awards to over 260 women to help them return to school, earn their degree, and take their place in the professional work world. Many of these women have overcome very difficult circumstances to realize their dream of a college education. We are proud to support their efforts.” – Barbara Marcus, President, The Education Fund of the Women’s Forum.
VIPs who attended the event included: New York Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul, Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney, Liz Neumark, Joan Haffenreffer, Daisey Holmes, Rikki Klieman, Doris Meister, Jonelle Procope, Deirdre Quinn, Ann Sarnoff, Marcy Syms, and Deborah Trudeau.

About The Women’s Forum of New York:

The Women’s Forum of New York is an invitation-only organization of more than 500 women representing the highest levels of achievement across all professional sectors and spheres of influence in our city.
Founded in 1974, when women were first entering the executive ranks, today’s Women Forum members are recognized among New York’s thought leaders, influencers, trailblazers, policymakers, change agents, power brokers, innovators, icons, creators, and business builders.

Forum membership provides extraordinary women with the opportunity to network with a diverse array of peers, to help one another succeed, and to share unique experiences. We believe the potential for cross-collaboration among our diverse membership and generations of members ignites progress and transformation for all of us.

About The Education Fund of the Women’s Forum of New York:

The Education Fund is the educational and charitable arm of The Women’s Forum of New York, established under a separate corporate governance as a 501(c)(3) tax deductible organization. Since 1987, the Fund has provided financial awards to women 35 and over who have demonstrated high potential and faced extreme adversity which has disrupted their education and derailed their futures. These women fall outside the scope of most traditional scholarship programs and these awards help them complete their education and get their careers and lives back on track. Funding is provided by member donation and an annual fundraising event, The Elly Awards Luncheon, which honors outstanding women leaders. To date, the Education Fund of the Women’s Forum has raised over $1.8 million, enabling us to assist more than 260 women in relaunching their lives and becoming role models for their families.
Pablo Raul Alarcon Sr. and Raul Alarcon Jr. of the Spanish Broadcasting System receive The Giants of Broadcasting & Electronic Arts, this prestigious award. Sigourney Weaver Confirms Appearance Women’s Pioneer Virginia Pate Wetter Joins Lineup

The Giants of Broadcasting & Electronic Arts has its 12th anniversary awards luncheon and ceremony in New York’s Gotham Hall on October 16, 2014. Noted actress
Sigourney Weaver will return from work on her most recent movie in England to present a remembrance of her late father, the distinguished mid-20th-century network executive
Sylvester L. (Pat) Weaver Jr., and Virginia Forwood Pate Wetter will be celebrated as a veteran of small town radio and one of an elite group of women who pioneered in the management ranks of what had long been almost exclusively a man’s world.

The announcement of Mrs. Wetter’s election to the prestigious honors event rounds out a roster that now includes the famed talk and game show host Regis Philbin, such eminent entrepreneurs as David Barrett of Hearst Television, Peter Smyth of Greater Media and Pablo Raul Alarcon Sr. and Raul Alarcon Jr. of the Spanish Broadcasting System, the veteran all-network programming standout Fred Silverman, journalists Chuck Scarborough of WNBC-TV New York and Judy Woodruff and Gwen Ifill of the PBS NewsHour. The event will be climaxed by a tribute to Pat Weaver, who as president and chairman of NBC became one of television’s and radio’s most iconic figures from the past, and whose influence continues to this day. Sigourney Weaver’s career includes roles as Ellen Ripley in the “Alien” film series, Dana Barrett in Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II and Dian Fossey in Gorillas in the Mist. She recently starred in USA Network’s miniseries Political Animals.

The Giants of Broadcasting & Electronic Arts awards program was created in 2003 by the Library of American Broadcasting to identify and recognize distinguished excellence and performance in radio, conventional television, cable TV, the internet and prospectively the social media, as well as those in associated fields. Its honor roll comprises an historic “A-list” of individuals and programs that with the addition of 2014 honorees will number 182.

The full story of the Giants is recommended reading at giantsofbroadcasting.com.

THE LIBRARY OF AMERICAN BROADCASTING (LAB) — located at the University of Maryland — is in its 43rd year of serving as the national information resource for the radio and television industries and the academic communities that rely upon it for depth and expertise. Its collections of historic documents, professional papers, oral and video histories, books and photographs are among the nation’s most extensive. LAB is evolving from a conventional library into a “homepage” for the world at large, no longer confined to responding to constituents one at a time but reaching thousands simultaneously through the Internet. Industry outreach includes lectures, symposia, print and the broadcast media themselves.

Virginia Hubbard Morris, president of Hubbard Radio, based in Minneapolis-St. Paul, is chair of the Library of American Broadcasting Foundation, which created the LAB and is responsible for its direction and fundraising. Donald West, former editor-in-chief of Broadcasting & Cable magazine, is chair of the Giants of Broadcasting & Electronic Arts awards program. The dean of libraries at the University of Maryland is Patricia Steele, and the curator is Chuck Howell. The Library has been honoring leaders in the broadcasting industry annually since 2003. Previous honorees among the honor roll of 170 include such industry notables as Guglielmo Marconi, Philo T. Farnsworth, David Sarnoff of RCA and NBC, William S. Paley and Frank Stanton of CBS, Leonard Goldenson of ABC, entrepreneurs Stanley E. and Stanley S. Hubbard and Lowry Mays, entertainers Bob Hope, Lucille Ball, Jack Benny, Arthur Godfrey and Johnny Carson, and journalists H. V. Kaltenborn, Edward R. Murrow, Walter Cronkite, Paul Harvey, Barbara Walters, Charlie Rose, Bob Schieffer, Brian Williams, Christiane Amanpour, Tim Russert and documentary filmmaker Ken Burns.
