George Gershwin International Music Competition aims to discover talent, reward brilliance, and celebrate musical artistry.
The Competition is named after George Gershwin, whose music had long been a part of the American consciousness. Truly a pioneer in his field, George Gershwin drew inspiration from European classical music, American popular music, and jazz to form a unique style that would come to define American music.

Competition 2022
The 5th Jubilee Edition of the Gershwin International Music Competition presents over 400 applicants from 45 countries and 27 US States. Several of the candidates will be admitted to the competition Semifinal Round, which takes place in New York City in June 2022.

Awards
Along with monetary awards, finalists of the Gershwin International Music Competition 2022 will receive concerts in the United States and Europe, recordings on acclaimed music labels, appearances with orchestras, alongside marketing/media promotion.

Gershwin Winners and Laureates
During the 9 years, Gershwin Competition opened career pathways to numerous young talents, many of whom sustain active performing careers. The long list includes internationally acclaimed pianists Anastasia Rizikov (Canada) and Ivan Gusev (Russia/USA), violinist Nune Melikian (who in 2018 debuted at Carnegie’s Stern Auditorium with Orchestra of St. Luke), Florida Opera theater soprano Mariya Kaganskaya, and saxophone virtuoso, Matvey Sherling.

Gershwin Competition 2022 is adjudicated by a prestigious panel of world-class musicians, including star pianists Olga Kern (Winner of Van Cliburn Competition), American pianist and Professor at The Juilliard School, Jerome Lowenthal, Canadian pianist Frederic Chiu, and illustrious violinist, Professor at Manhattan School of Music, Albert Markov, among others.

Buoyed by his success, five months later, he ran his first marathon, and became the first amputee to run 26.2 miles. There was no looking back. In 1983, he founded the Achilles Track Club, currently known as Achilles International.

Dick has a BS, MBA, and Ph. D. from New York University and lives in Manhattan. He’s been married for 40+ years and has a married son and a granddaughter.

Dick Traum, an above-the-knee amputee, completes the New York City Marathon, the first amputee to do so

1977

An article about Dick Traum appears in Runner’s World. The story inspires Terry Fox, a young Canadian amputee suffering from cancer, to embark on a cross country run across Canada to raise funds and awareness for cancer research. Terry ultimately lost his battle to the disease in 1981 but his legacy lives on in a series of Terry Fox races.

1983

Dick founds Achilles Track Club, and six members complete the NYC Marathon

1984

The Vermont Chapter is founded, the first chapter outside New York

1985

The first International Chapter, New Zealand, is founded

1988

The first Achilles Handicap 10K Race in Central Park

1991

Achilles hosts its first annual Tribute Dinner

1995

Achilles Kids is founded, kicked off with the “Race Around New York” virtual marathon

2001

The inaugural Achilles Marathon in Brooklyn

2003

Achilles launches the Hope & Possibility 5 mile run, a race that gives awards for achievement in multiple disabled categories and includes both able-bodied and disabled runners. The event’s name is taken from Achilles founding Board Chair, Trisha Meili’s book, “I Am the Central Park Jogger – A Story of Hope and Possibility”

2004

Dick Traum & Mary Bryant visit Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C. to speak to the first group of Freedom Team runners. Later that year 34 wounded veterans came to New York City to run the 5 mile Hope and Possibility race.

2006

The first Hope & Possibility race outside NY takes place, in Minneapolis, MN 2006 – Founding of ‘Skills for Positive Change’, a program for people living with diabetes.

2007

Achilles celebrates participation in 25 years of the NYC Marathon.

2008

New York Governor David Paterson runs in the Hope & Possibility race, guided by Trisha Meili.

2010

Prince Harry of Wales, Cindy and Megan McCain, and Heather Mills join over 5000 participants in the 8th Annual Achilles Hope & Possibility. It was also the 1st year the H&P was an ING NYC Marathon Qualifying Race.

Faxon Law New Haven Road Race Celebrates 40 Years!

New Haven, CT: http://www.newhavenroadrace.org/ The Faxon Law New Haven Road Race is excited to celebrate its 40th anniversary this Labor Day! The event takes place Monday, September 4 on the New Haven Green. To celebrate 40 years, the race is offering several new amenities including athlete names on race bibs and custom race posters designed by Garry Trudeau for all athletes. The races consist of a half marathon, relay, 5K, Town Fair Tire Kids Fun Run, and the signature 20K.

This year, the race is bringing back an updated version of its classic race logo. Yale graduate and well-known cartoonist of the Doonesbury Comic Strip, Garry Trudeau, designed the inaugural race shirt in 1978 and has done a few updated anniversary logos over the years. The 2017 race logo will be featured on a commemorative race poster to be distributed to the first 5,000 race entrants. The first 200 who make a donation of $75 or more to the Children’s Tumor Foundation receive an autographed copy of the poster! The Children’s Tumor Foundation (CTF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to driving research, expanding knowledge and advancing care for millions worldwide who live with neurofibromatosis. The Faxon Law New Haven 20K again hosts the USATF 20K National Championship. The race expects to feature a number of past champions and U.S. Olympians. This year marks the 26th year a national championship event has been held in New Haven, making the race the longest consecutive USATF Championship race ever.

Another anniversary perk, all runners registered by August 1st receive a customized race bib that will have their name on it.

The event is organized by JB Sports and a team of local volunteers who make up our Board of Directors. New Haven Road Race President, John Courtmanche states “We’ve been fortunate to continually grow and improve throughout our history. We are proud of the longevity of race and the tradition it has become for our runners. The event’s success over the past 40 years is a reflection of the support we receive from the City of New Haven, our sponsors and the local running community.”

Some people always amaze me – Gregory Gallo, a victim of severe brain trauma, yesterday completed his 50th marathon at age 68. Below are pics from mile 17 as well as the blistering cold of pre-race. He became very sick at mile 18, but arm and arm, he persevered just continuing to tell me not to let him quit. In just under 8 hours we crossed. Crazy awesome…. What an inspiration…. Some of the best parts of being alive are moments like these

I am putting on my dancing shoes again to help raise money to send children living in the Foster Care system to summer camp.  I have joined Team “Show me the Money”, in The Dance This Way Dance-A-Thon to be held in New York City on Sep.28,2014 for The Felix Organization/ Adoptees for Children, Sheila Jaffee’s Non-Profit Organization.  For many of these kids, the camp experience is life altering. They learn skills, or discover ones that they already had. They are offered exposure to a world they could never have before imagined, and learn that a better life is indeed within their reach. Marathon Monday and the Scream Tunnel

Visual/Audio Opportunities include:

• The loudest Scream Tunnel ever, thanks to some 2000 Wellesley students, alums, and friends with the help of 250 megaphones and 150 cowbells
• Wellesley women greeting runners with cheers, kisses, and 800 signs that were requested by runners through Facebook.
• An art installation of thousands of origami hummingbirds—symbols of peace handmade by students and Wellesley town residents as part of the Boston Better project—along the Scream Tunnel portion of the marathon route.

When: Marathon Monday, April 21, 2014. Peak time is 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

About the Scream Tunnel – A Tradition as Old as the Marathon Itself

The first Boston Marathon was run in 1897, just a year after the first modern Olympics were held—and 22 years after Wellesley College admitted its first students. The College is around the halfway point on the marathon route. In the first race, Wellesley students are reported to have cheered on a particular favorite (a Harvard student), thus setting a precedent for vociferous support for the runners. That support continued every year, and soon turned into tradition, now known as the Scream Tunnel. The ritual gained momentum in the 1970s when women were at last allowed to officially run the race.
