A heartfelt memoir about the search for religion and identity

“I’m not Jewish.” For years, that’s what David Weill told anyone who asked about his religious background. Yes, his father was a Jew who had left Nazi Germany as a boy. But his mother was a Southern Baptist. Growing up in New Orleans, religion wasn’t something his family discussed, let alone practiced. As an adult, he developed a fervent zeal and profound devotion to his work as a specialist in organ transplants. Transplantation was all he needed to define and fulfill him—until a crisis shook him to the core.

As a boy, Weill’s only experience with religion was when he accompanied Deborah, the family’s domestic help and his second mother figure, to her all-Black Baptist church. As a young doctor, he fell in love with Jackie, a nurse from rural Iowa and a devout Catholic. Much to the chagrin of her parents, they were married in a Dallas hotel rather than a church. After settling in Palo Alto, close to Stanford University Medical Center where Weill headed the heart and lung transplant program, their two daughters were baptized and confirmed at a local Catholic church. When his oldest daughter, Hannah, was around ten and asked him why he never joined them at mass on Sundays, he told her, “I’m not Catholic.” She looked at him, brow furrowed, and raised a question that would prove to haunt him, “What are you then?”

TELL ME I BELONG follows David Weill’s search for the answer. In 2015, after the simultaneous unraveling of his carefully crafted career and the death of his father, Weill began to doubt everything, including his purpose in life. While grappling with emotional pain and sinking deeper into despair, he began to suffer perplexing physical symptoms. In his moment of crisis, he was seized by a strong desire to practice a formal religion. But for Weill, the real question was, Which religion? Eventually, he chose Catholicism and was baptized at age fifty. He found solace in heart-to-heart talks with a priest and his daughters’ happiness at having the whole family at church together. Everything was fine—until 2020, when he learned that his mother had converted to Judaism right before marrying his father. He was born a Jew. And in the eyes of the Jewish faith, he would always be Jewish. That realization sparked his second quest. In an interview, David can talk about:

· What drew his mother, a native of Selma, Alabama, to Judaism—partly because, to quote her, Jews “always seemed like such practical people,” and largely as a rejection of Baptists who preached love for all God’s children and practiced racism.

· His father’s complicated sense of being Jewish, which he viewed as a source of pride for its association with smart and successful people while remaining wary of being ostracized or stigmatized for the religion he was born into.

· His determination, with the help of investigators, to learn more about his grandfather’s time imprisoned in the Buchenwald concentration camp, and the role of his famous relative, the composer Kurt Weill, in orchestrating his family’s escape to the United States.

· His heart-wrenching trip to Berlin, accompanied by his daughter Hannah, to find his father’s first home, and the inner work of defining himself.

Ultimately, David Weill made peace with who he is and where he belongs. “I am not turning away from Catholicism as much as I am embracing Judaism, because it is mine, always was,” he reflects. “It just took me a while to get there.”

As a guest of her father, she has performed at events with legends Marilyn and Alan Bergman, Hal David, and Charles Fox, as well as with contemporary artists Aloe Blacc, Gregory Porter and Ed Sheeran. She was a featured artist on Booker T. Jones’ Sound the Alarm LP and performed as a special guest on his Blue Note Tokyo Tour. She was a special guest of Jose James on his Lean On Me: Bill Withers Tribute Tour. Co-writing credits include “Live Like A Warrior” by Matisyahu and “Don’t Worry” by Judith Hill. A few personal highlights for Kori were performing with her father at his Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction (2006) and at Oprah Winfrey’s “Legends Who Paved The Way Gospel Brunch” (2015). Kori currently serves on the board of FreeHorse Arts, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating nature-based arts education for people with diverse abilities.

Marcia Withers Bio

MARCIA WITHERS is the wife of the late music icon singer/songwriter Bill Withers. She oversaw Bill’s career management and as head of Withers Entertainment and the Mattie Music Group in Los Angeles, she controls the family’s publishing companies, and its worldwide sub-publisher representatives. She has been instrumental in the placement of Bill’s songs in countless films, television programs and other media, and played a creative role in many of Bill’s recording compilations. She is the co-producer of The Essential Bill Withers and a tribute show at Carnegie Hall in 2015. Marcia is a graduate of the UCLA Graduate School of Management (now Anderson School of Management) and previously worked for Management III and Concerts West. A supporter of charitable causes and board member of the Stuttering Association for the Young (SAY), she was married to Bill for 43 years. The Withers’ have two children, Todd and Kori.

I am honored to add some Multicultural Background on our company, Milestone Broadcast Corporation, MBC. We were encouraged to start back in 1985, by the largest Chinese Media Company in America, the World Journal, to create a multicultural marketing, media rep and advertising company. I agreed, as my dream was to create Positive TV Programs for the World and by working with the multicultural communities I would have helped them and maybe they would put my TV shows into their country. MBC initially started to represent all the Asian Media in America, as well as the European, which was my ancestry, and then later on the African, Hispanic/Latino and Middle Eastern America communicates. America the home of ALL, or as termed by Times Square, the Crossroads of the World.

I learned through that media representation experience by working with the multicultural communities how similar we are, we all laugh, cry, hurt, care and much more… we are brothers and sisters HOMO-SAPIENS, YAY. FORWARD MOTION. ONE WORLD.

JUDI MARK “Merely Marvelous”- The Songs of Gwen Verdon is continuing the run with additional dates October 4 & 11. Featured is acclaimed musical celebration of four- time Tony Award winner GWEN VERDON and her hit Broadway shows including “Damn Yankees,” “Redhead,” “Sweet Charity” and “Chicago.” Highlighted are the songs Gwen Verdon first introduced to the world such as, “Whatever Lola Wants,” “Where Am I Going,” “Roxie,” and “If My Friends Could See Me Now,” among many others.

Judi also spotlights some standards and surprises from Gwen’s solo album, “The Girl I Left Home For,” and her film and television appearances. The list of songwriters represented is as diverse as Gwen’s career, including Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields, Kander and Ebb, Simon and Garfunkel and Kurt Weill.

ABOUT JUDI MARK: a professional dancer, singer, actor, show producer and educator and Toastmaster. For over four decades she has produced and performed throughout the USA on concert stages, Off-Broadway theaters, regional theaters, and cabarets. In these live-on-stage performances, the Chicago- born multi-talented Ms. Mark has been demonstrating her wide range of training in ballet, modern dance, jazz, tap, acting, vocals, and piano. In addition, she has appeared in film, and television. Equally notable are her many years in which she taught and trained future generations of stage performers. She is credited with self producing five one woman shows. “Dancing Through My Life” was directed by Jeff Harnar.
