I love this line, which comes from a quote by Melodie Beattie, which reads in its entirety:

“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend.”

And I would add this thought — that without gratitude, you can turn any paradise into hell.

Without gratitude, you will always walk away from the table still starving — no matter what measure of abundance has been laid before you.

Without gratitude, every job is the worst job on earth, every spouse is deficient, every friend lets you down, every home is on the wrong street, every gift is the wrong size, every novel is full of typos, every mattress is uncomfortable, every cup of coffee is too weak.

Without gratitude, every choice you ever made will always feel like the wrong choice.

Without gratitude, summers will always be too hot; winters will always be too cold. The music will always be too loud, the movie will always suck, the teenagers will always be too rude.

Without gratitude, people who vote or worship differently from you will always be monsters in your eyes. Without gratitude, you will always feel you were born into the wrong family. Without gratitude, the waitress will always be too slow, and you will always get the worst seat on the bus. Without gratitude, every driver on the road except you is an idiot.

Without gratitude, life is The Misery.

These three things are so true…

1) There is no happiness without gratitude
2) There is no transformation without self-accountability
3) There is no peace without forgiveness

But first among those — the alchemy of all alchemies — is gratitude.

If we learn nothing else while we’re here, then, we must learn how to say THANK YOU.

Don’t Get “Ticked Off”

This Summer

Mosquito & Tick-Borne Illnesses Are on the Rise
The Secret to Beating Their Bites This Summer Might be More Obvious Than You May Think

It’s one of the most annoying sounds that invade our space in the summer…that BZZZZZ from a mosquito. And, where there’s a buzz comes a bite, oftentimes followed by itching and swelling. Unfortunately, mosquitoes aren’t the only summer pest that causes a mean bite. Ticks are also on the prowl for a blood meal – and humans make great hosts.

Although tiny, these biting pests can leave bigger problems than just itchy welts on the skin. They are known to transmit germs and pathogens that cause Lyme disease, West Nile virus, Zika virus and other dangerous diseases. What’s more, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently reported that disease cases from mosquito, tick and flea bites tripled in the U.S. from 2004 to 2016. This makes prevention of the utmost importance as we head into the summer months.

The good news is your audience doesn’t have to spend the summer months cooped up inside to avoid the wrath of mosquitoes and ticks. There are steps they can take to help keep these pests at bay while enjoying the great outdoors. And, the keys to doing so might be more obvious than people may think.

Jorge Parada, MD, MPH, infectious disease specialist and medical advisor for the National Pest Management Association (NPMA)

•	How to properly apply insect repellent for maximum effectiveness
•	Other proactive steps to fight off mosquito and tick bites this summer
•	The best at-home bite remedies
•	Instructions for properly removing a tick from the skin
•	Who’s at greatest risk for mosquito and tick-borne diseases? What are the symptoms, treatment and diagnosis?

Goal: $200,000 by MIDNIGHT Wednesday

Paul: 10 million seniors will go hungry on Thanksgiving. We need your help to reach them.

Will you be a hero for hungry seniors today?

Make your generous gift of $16 or whatever you can afford now >>

Yet that’s all some seniors will eat next Thursday.

While we’re feasting on dinner with family and friends, more than 10 million seniors will be struggling just to make it through the day.

That’s the appalling state of senior hunger in America — and it’s time we did something about it.

Make a charitable gift of $16 or whatever you can afford to fight senior hunger before Thanksgiving.

Paul, sometimes I wish I could pretend that senior hunger was a myth, that the reports were wrong. But the fact is that this tragedy is unfolding right here in America — today. Already, more than 10 million older Americans are facing hunger, and more are at risk.

These hungry seniors are our neighbors, people we pass on the street or say hi to at the post office. They’re in every community across the country, suffering silently just to get enough food to make it through the day.

It’s heartbreaking — but together, we can help. Already this year, we’ve delivered more than 4 million meals through community meal pack events across the country, including a record-breaking two-day meal pack challenge in Washington, D.C. We piloted new, innovative solutions to senior food insecurity with the rollout of Grocery Guides programs that help older Americans make healthy, affordable choices in their local stores. And we’ve helped low-income seniors make healthy choices through our Fresh Savings program, which makes fresh fruits and vegetables more affordable for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients. We’ve stood together to raise awareness about this problem — and committed to working together to solve it.

Help us raise $200,000 to fight senior hunger — every dollar makes a difference >>

I hope you’ll consider making a voluntary, charitable contribution to AARP Foundation, AARP’s charitable affiliate. For hungry seniors who have nowhere else to turn, your support can be a beacon of hope. Thanks in advance for standing with us this holiday season.

New Guidelines Suggest Introducing Foods like Peanuts to Babies as Young as 4-6 Months Help Prevent Allergies
Jenna Helwig, Parents Food Editor and author of a new book, REAL BABY FOOD tells us how.
Until now, we believed that introducing babies to foods slowly would reduce the risk of developing an allergic reaction. Now, new research indicates that the delay could potentially increase the risk of developing a food allergy. The latest recommendations from the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology are in sharp contrast to earlier guidelines that children should put off having foods like peanuts, eggs shellfish, and fish until age 3.
Parents magazine food editor, Jenna Helwig, helps parents navigate these new guidelines and offers tips on how to cook for babies and toddlers from 6 months to 3 years in a way that makes the process easy, fast, and flexible, starting with simple purees and moving on to finger foods and toddler meals.peanuts

• Results of the new LEAP Study (Learning Early About Peanut Allergy) indicating that a delay in introducing potentially allergenic foods to babies might actually cause more harm than good.
• How to safely introduce new foods to baby and toddler.
• How to encourage a lifetime of clean healthy eating for your baby.
• How to discourage “picky eaters”.
• How not to leave out the rest of the family when making dinner for toddler.
JENNA HELWIG is the food editor for Parents magazine and has ap-peared on the Today show numerous times demonstrating kid-friendly recipes. She is also a freelance writ¬er, culinary instructor, and person¬al chef, and founded Rosaberry, a culinary services company devoted to helping families eat better. Jenna lives in Brooklyn with her husband and daughter.

Chef Rebecca Lang Recommends Roman Meal Whole Grain Bread
A good breakfast satisfies you until lunch. A better breakfast prepares you to conquer the day! September is Better Breakfast Month, which is all about making breakfast a priority. Rebecca Lang, author of five cookbooks, is an advocate for starting the day with a healthy, tasty breakfast.
“It’s important to start your day with nutritious foods,” said Lang. “But you don’t have to sacrifice flavor for nutrition. There are plenty of quick and delicious recipes that will have you looking forward to breakfast!”
According to Lang, the building blocks of a better breakfast are:
Protein: Foods high in protein like eggs, nuts and meats help you feel full faster. This can help control overeating.
Complex carbohydrates: Make your breakfast with whole grain bread instead of white bread and you will feel full longer. Lang suggests Roman Meal whole grain bread. Most varieties contain at least 21 grams of whole grains per serving, which is almost half of the recommended daily value.
Fruits and vegetables: Experts recommend anywhere from 5-13 servings of fruits and vegetables per day. Start your day off right by incorporating fruits and vegetables in your breakfast and you willl be more likely to eat them throughout the day.
Local ingredients: Buying local is better for the environment and usually tastes better. Roman Meal bread is always baked fresh, locally by regional bakers across the country.
“The Roman Meal website has great recipes that incorporate all of my better breakfast building blocks,” Lang shared. “My kids can’t get enough of the Whole Grain French Toast and Tropical Fruit Kabobs. I love to make the Whole Grain Florentine Egg Cups whenever I host a brunch.”
