I Don’t Want to Be a Burden in My Old Age

I am not afraid of growing old. Let the wrinkles come—I will wear them like medals, proof that I have laughed, cried, and lived deeply. Let my skin loosen and fold like pages in a well-loved book. Let my hair silver and shine, a crown earned by years of stories.

I do not fear the quiet. Solitude is no stranger; I have learned to make peace with my own company. I have sat in stillness and found strength there. I know how to rest in the silence without being swallowed by it.

But what unsettles me is something else—fate. That unpredictable force that sometimes tucks you in at night like a loving hand and other times leaves you standing in the rain, forgotten and cold.

I do not want to become a burden—a sigh of exhaustion behind closed doors. I do not want my presence to feel heavy in the room or my name to be whispered in tones of weariness. I do not want my dependence to become someone else’s silent sacrifice.

I want to be like the wind—restless, moving, always dancing forward. I want my old age to be a poem of resilience, a morning brewed with memories, a sunset painted with hope. I want to keep learning, keep loving, keep discovering—never stagnant, never finished.

I do not fear aging. I fear being boxed in by a life I didn’t choose—a life that shrinks instead of expands.

So I will keep walking forward, not clinging to what was, but embracing what still can be.

And if the day comes when my steps falter and I lean on others more than I would like, I will offer my gratitude freely, never forgetting that love is not a burden—it’s a gift.

To those who carry others with patience and tenderness—you are the quiet heroes of this world. Thank you

Lt. Gen. Jody J. Daniels 34th Chief of Army Reserve and 9th Commanding General, United States Army Reserve Command LTG Jody J. Daniels assumes duties as the 34th Chief of Army Reserve and 9th Commanding General, United States Army Reserve Command, July 28, 2020, after most recently serving as the Commanding General, 88th Readiness Division, Fort Snelling, Minnesota. She was born in Rolla, Missouri and is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University where she earned a B.S. in Applied Mathematics (Computer Science). She holds a M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Massachusetts (Amherst) as well as a M.S. in Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College. Daniels’ command assignments include commanding general of the 88th Readiness Division; commander of the 87th Army Reserve Support Command (East) where she also served as the deputy commanding general, United States Army Reserve Support Command, First Army Division (East); commander of the Theater Support Command, Fort Belvoir, Virginia; commander of the 2200th Military Intelligence Group; commander of 1st Battalion, 417th Regiment, 1st Brigade (Basic Combat Training), 98th Division (Institutional Training); and commander, Headquarters and Service Company, 524th Military Intelligence Battalion. Her key staff assignments include chief of staff, U.S. Army Forces Command; assistant deputy chief of staff G-2, office of the deputy chief of staff, G-2; deputy director and director, intelligence and knowledge development directorate (J2) for U.S. Africa Command; and assistant chief of staff for U.S. Africa Command. She completed a Civil Affairs deployment as the G-5, operations officer, Kosovo Forces/Allied Rapid Reaction Corps, Operation Joint Guardian. She also deployed to Iraq and served as the chief of plans and integration and later as the director for intelligence (J2) for the Multi-National Security Transition Command-Iraq. In her civilian career, Daniels was previously the Director of Advanced Programs for Lockheed Martin’s Advanced Technology Laboratories (LM ATL). Prior to that, she was the Director of the Contextual Systems Laboratory and was a manager and engineer in LM ATL’s Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. She has served on the Defense Advanced Research Programs Agency Information Science and Technology (ISAT) Review Board, on the ISAT Steering Committee, and Drexel University’s Computer Science Department Advisory Board. Daniels is a graduate of the Engineer Officer Basic, Military Intelligence Officer Basic and Advanced, and the Civil Affairs Officer Advanced courses. Her awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal, three Legions of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, five Meritorious Service Medals, Joint Service Commendation Medal, four Army Commendation Medals, Joint Service Achievement Medal, two Army Achievement Medals, and the Combat Action Badge. She is married to COL(R) John McCarthy and has a grown stepdaughter, Shannon McCarthy.

On Tuesday, May 23, in conjunction with the Times Square Advertising Coalition, the Emmy award winning “Just A Common Soldier” video will be shown in Times Square at 10:30 AM to honor the bravest Americans: our great veterans.

YOU ARE INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS VERY SPECIAL EVENT.

At 10:30 AM America’s Tenor, Daniel Rodriguez, will open the short program by singing. I will speak for a few minutes as well as Ret. Brig. Gen. Loree Sutton, Producer Stephen Clouse, Purple Heart & Bronze Star medals recipient Angelo Monaco, and Ken Fisher of Fisher House.

PLEASE COME TO THE CNN & CLEAR COMMUNICATIONS SCREENS IN TIMES SQUARE AT 47TH AND BROADWAY AT 10:15 AM, TUESDAY, MAY 23. THE PROGRAM WILL START PROMPTLY AT 10:30 AM AND END AT 11 AM.

Michael Fred Phelps II (born June 30, 1985) is an American swimmer and the most decorated Olympian of all time with 19 medals. Phelps also holds the all-time records for gold medals (15) and gold medals in individual events (9). In winning eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Games, Phelps took the record for the most first-place finishes at any single Olympic Games. Five of those victories were in individual events, tying the single Games record. In the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Phelps has won two silver medals and one gold through July 31.

Phelps is the long course world recordholder in the 100 metres butterfly, 200 metres butterfly and 400 metres individual medley as well as the former long course world recordholder in the 200 metres freestyle and 200 metres individual medley. He has won a total of sixty-six medals in major international competition, fifty-four gold, nine silver, and three bronze spanning the Olympics, the World, and the Pan Pacific Championships. Phelps’s international titles and record-breaking performances have earned him the World Swimmer of the Year Award six times and American Swimmer of the Year Award eight times. His unprecedented Olympic success in 2008 earned Phelps Sports Illustrated magazine’s Sportsman of the Year award. The same magazine said that he is “universally recognized as the greatest swimmer in history”.

After the 2008 Summer Olympics, Phelps started the Michael Phelps Foundation, which focuses on growing the sport of swimming and promoting healthier lifestyles. He expects to do further work with his foundation after the 2012 Olympics, which he has said will be his last.
