Dr. Singh played an important part in treating my diagnosis for stage 4 Melanoma. He recommended Dr. Paul Chapman, an amazing oncologist to design a treatment regimen.

Dr. Chapman recommended a combination of Keytruda, a Merc product, and T-Vec, an Amgen product. In addition, Dr. Gary Deng approved a recommendation from my friend Lily Li in the traditional Chinese Medicine business of a Beijing TongRenTang medicine of Reishi mushroom capsules and a powder from Taiwan from seaweed.

After 2 years, the cancer cells were destroyed. Dr. Singh performed the surgery to remove the swelling from my neck. Today marked the 5th anniversary of my diagnosis of a cancer free fellow. I am most grateful to Dr. Singh for his success in designing such lifesaving treatment for me. I am also grateful to Dr. Chapman, Dr. Deng and Lily Li for their roles in my successful victory over stage 4 Melanoma.

The Hidden Dangers of Winter Sun Exposure

Sun safety habits are important all times of year, and that includes in the winter. Winter activities, such as snow skiing, can result in significant exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun – the leading cause of skin cancers – as UV rays reflect off surfaces, even on cloudy and hazy days. This winter, sun exposure may be a special concern as people spend more time outside, due to COVID-19.

Of particular concern is melanoma, a form of skin cancer. When diagnosed in its early stages, melanoma can be treatable, but it may come back in 20-30% of patients. And in its advanced stages, melanoma can be deadly.

Dr. Sigrun Hallmeyer, a Chicago-based oncologist discusses:
• Why sun safety is important all year round
• Warning signs of skin cancer, including melanoma
• The importance of treatment if someone is diagnosed with melanoma
• Treatment options to help prevent a skin cancer called melanoma from coming back after it has been removed by surgery

May 7 is Melanoma Monday and the official launch of Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month.
To mark the day, the American Academy of Dermatology announces results of a first-of-its-kind survey, which identifies cities that take sun exposure and protection seriously and those that fail to make the grade despite repeated health warnings.
The Rays: Your Grade survey, which polled adults in 32 U.S. metropolitan regions spanning 29 states, assigned rankings to cities based on residents answers to a range of questions testing their knowledge, attitudes and behaviors toward tanning and sun protection. Cities were then ranked based on the percentage of people scoring A and B grades. Only thirty-five percent of respondents scored above average, with grades A and B.
To help more Americans Rays their grade, the Academy encourages people to take the following precautions:
* Use a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher that provides broad-spectrum protection from both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays;
* Seek shade whenever possible;
* Avoid outdoor activities between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the sun’s rays are the strongest;
* Follow the Shadow Rule if your shadow is shorter than you are, the sun’s damaging rays are at their strongest and you are likely to sunburn; and * Avoid tanning beds.
More about Dr. Arielle N.B. Kauvar:
Arielle N.B. Kauvar, M.D., F.A.A.D., is a clinical associate professor of dermatology at New York University School of Medicine and maintains a private practice in New York City. Dr. Kauvar is chair of the American Academy of Dermatology’s Council on Communications, and also is past president of the Dermatologic Society of Greater New York.
