Remember to Protect Your Pets When Spending More Time Outdoors

Spending quality time outside with pets is a great way to be refreshed and experience companionship during this unprecedented time. Many are also adopting or fostering shelter pets as a way to connect. While people are doing all they can to preserve the health and safety of their communities through social distancing, working from home and other actions, pet owners also face the unique responsibility of maintaining their pet’s health and safety when choosing outdoor activities over social gatherings.

Spending time in nature on long walks, taking hikes or even playing in the backyard with your pets is important to their physical health. At the same time, this gives fleas and ticks the opportunity to pounce on dogs and cats and spread serious diseases. Lyme disease is the most common illness caused by tick bites, representing 72% of the tick-borne diseases reported in humans, according to recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data. It can also be fatal if left untreated in both dogs and humans.
Lyme disease has been found in every state in the U.S. According to the CDC, approximately 30,000 cases of Lyme disease occur in the U.S. each year. While dogs and cats cannot spread the disease directly to humans, pets can bring infected ticks into your house from the outdoors.
Pet parents should take measures to protect their four-legged friends, such as checking fur for ticks and having pets protected with a parasite preventative year-round. Long-lasting preventative treatments can help keep your pet safe from these creepy crawlers and your home free from infestation.
Dan Markwalder, DVM and leading expert in Lyme disease and prevention, shares advice that will help keep your dog safe outside this summer, with a special emphasis on protecting pets from fleas, ticks and Lyme disease. He’ll also outline the signs and symptoms associated with Lyme disease in pets.

SOCCER LEGEND, BRANDI CHASTAIN ENCOURAGING FAMILIES TO PLAY FOR A CHANGE

Merck Consumer Care’s Active Family Project has partnered with US Youth Soccer (USYS) to encourage families to Play For A Change this September. The program promotes being active together as a family through soccer, while also making a positive change in the lives of those less fortunate. To celebrate Youth Soccer Month, the Active Family Project will donate a minimum of 75 soccer kits to US Youth Soccer, filled with the equipment needed for kids in underserved communities to play. For every 100 engagements (likes, shares or comments by users) on the Active Family Project Facebook® page, during the month of September, consumers can help enable an additional donation of up to 50 more soccer kits.

Teaming up with the Active Family Project, soccer legend Brandi Chastain – member of the World Cup and Olympic-winning women’s soccer teams – is encouraging families to play for a change through media appearances and social media engagement. Chastain will also offer soccer tips on the Active Family Project Activity Finder, at www.activefamilyproject.com, a go-to guide for play and resource for parents looking for some instant solutions to their playtime needs.

The Play for A Change program with USYS will last through September 30. Tips from experts at USYS about how to be playful through soccer will be highlighted on the Active Family Project Activity Finder and Facebook page. Helpful information on soccer field locations and clubs in the 10 largest U.S. cities will also be featured on the Activity Finder, making it easier for families to join leagues and participate in local games – locations in more cities will roll out this fall.
The Active Family Project, launched by Merck Consumer Care in May, helps inspire families to live life more fully by spotlighting healthy habits, providing tips and information, and sharing fun family activities, while building a national community of moms dedicated to adopting and promoting an active and healthy lifestyle, for the people they care about most.

Brandi Denise Chastain

Brandi Denise Chastain (born July 21, 1968) is a professional American soccer defender and midfielder who plays for the team California Storm of Women’s Premier Soccer League and is a former member of the United States women’s national soccer team.

Chastain has played for San Jose CyberRays of the WUSA and FC Gold Pride of Women’s Professional Soccer. She is best known for her game-winning penalty shootout kick against China in the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup final and her bra-baring celebration afterwards. Amongst her many achievements, Chastain has won two Women’s World Cup championships, two Olympic gold medals, and an Olympic silver medal.

Since our last eNewsletter we’ve launched a 3-year joint initiative with Merck & Co. to improve water access to villages in India. Announced on World Water Day, the objective is to install a dozen new water purification systems in India to help reduce the impact of water-borne disease for the roughly 50,000 people living in those villages. Merck will bring its expertise in public health to help us better evaluate outcomes and improve how we increase usage of safe water and encourage healthy hygiene behaviors. Taking a Fresh Look at an Old Approach: Modular Slow Sand Filtration in Ghana

Slow sand filtration has been around for ages, but despite its effectiveness and minimal operating cost, its high up-front costs, complex and lengthy construction process and lack of flexibility for future expansion, hampered its widespread use. As a treatment solution, it is used today primarily for municipal supply, rather than for community kiosks and other off-grid, decentralized water systems. But recent innovations in slow sand filtration mean that low-cost, modular systems can be shipped in containers and set up in a matter of days.

Safe Water Network will install these modular slow sand filtration systems in two communities within the southern Lake Volta region. Based on our experience providing safe water to communities in Ghana, we believe that we can now design and implement reliable and profitable systems in villages that would otherwise be unable to manage the cost of providing safe water. Because of Slow Sand’s simplicity and lower costs, there is great potential to broadly replicate this approach.

NABARD and Safe Water Network to Pilot Sustainable, Community-based Safe Water Station in Andhra Pradesh, India
	Safe Water Network is pleased to announce the site in Andhra Pradesh with financial support from National Bank for Agriculture & Rural Development (NABARD), India’s leading apex bank for rural credit and development. The site, supported through NABARD’s “Rural Innovation Fund“, will test two key aspects of the Safe Water Network approach to locally owned and managed water systems: the Remote Monitoring System and the development of a financial product through Watershed Development Committees. The initiative will also include an impact study to determine the benefits of providing safe water to a village in need.

Water Tower Opens in Kibera, Kenya Safe Water Network Provides Technical Assistance to Local NGO

Drawing from our field initiatives in India and Ghana, Safe Water Network has developed a capability to design, spec, construct and operate a variety of decentralized water systems. We have now made this service available to organizations, and recently assisted with the installation of a 100,000 liter water tower for the Kibera School for Girls.

Located in Kibera, Kenya, one of Africa’s largest slums, this tuition free school for girls was founded in 2009 by the NGO, Shining Hope. Safe Water Network designed and assisted with installation of a safe water tower that opened successfully and on schedule in January of this year. The launch coincided with the opening of a new wing for the school.

Onesmerc Water Delivery Network, Kenya

When severe drought struck Kenya in 2008, people in many regions of the country found themselves unable to secure enough water to meet their needs. In Mbooni West, a district in the drought-affected Eastern Province, businessman Onesmus Muthoka watched his family’s livestock die for lack of water. He and his neighbors also struggled to get safe drinking water for their families. We discovered Mr. Muthoka’s activities as part of our Kenya market assessment study in collaboration with IFC.

Frustrated by the lack of an effective government or community response, Mr. Muthoka responded by creating a business dedicated to delivering safe water to the area.
