As we celebrate Sukkot, a joyous Jewish holiday, it serves as a reminder that the ultimate happiness lies not in what we achieve, but in cultivating a state of mind and being. This blog aims to explore the essence of true happiness and its universal relevance, creating a meaningful connection for both Jewish and non-Jewish individuals alike.</p>
<p>1. Embracing Sukkot&#8217;s Message:<br />
Sukkot, also known as the Feast of Tabernacles, is a time when Jewish communities come together to build temporary shelters and dwell in them for seven days. This act of dwelling in fragile structures teaches us the importance of appreciating the present moment and finding joy in simplicity. Regardless of our faith, we can all learn from this practice by embracing gratitude, mindfulness, and the pursuit of true happiness beyond material possessions.</p>
<p>2. Shifting Our Perspective:<br />
True happiness cannot be solely dependent on external circumstances or achievements. It is a state of mind that transcends the ups and downs of life. <p>Hi Paul,</p>
<p>The body holds much of the information we need to function at our best, but too often we ignore its messages and plow ahead with what our minds tell us. Perhaps because we’re not taught from early on to pay attention to, or trust, internal messages as well as external demands, we frequently ignore our body’s communications.</p>
<p>So we take another extra-strength aspirin rather than investigating what’s causing our head to ache. We use more caffeine or sugar to give us a lift when we feel tired, rather than hearing our body’s message about needing rest or recognizing our fatigue as an early symptom of burnout we’d do well to honor.</p>
<p>We fail to take into account the thousand little messages communicated to us by how we’re holding ourselves: the mouth that’s pinched and tight rather than relaxed. The fact that our shoulders are up around our ears, the knot of tension in our stomach as we promise to do something when closer consideration might tell us we are already over-extended.</p>
<p>These days we’re notorious for putting deadlines ahead of the protests of aching bones or inadequately nourished bellies. (Is there hidden wisdom in calling a due date a <em>deadline</em> in the first place?) Instead of asking our body what it wants, we go for the quick fill-up or the comfort food that may be the last thing we really need.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><em><strong>So what to do to give your body an equal say in how you use it?</strong></em></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Start with the breath. </strong>Breathing consciously is a major part of body awareness. Turn off thoughts and just let yourself experience the inflow and outflow of breath. Label them, “In. Out. In. Out.” Note how and where you are breathing or failing to, a clear sign something important is going on.</p>
<p><strong>Allow yourself quiet time. </strong>Sit for ten minutes just observing yourself, even (especially!) in the middle of a busy day. Meditate. Take a walk or a nap. Allow time to do nothing. Soak in a hot tub rather than taking a quick shower.</p>
<p><strong>Get a massage.</strong> It’s not self-indulgence to be massaged; it wakes up the whole nervous system and helps you tune in.</p>
<p><strong>Use your journal to dialogue with your body.</strong> Ask your body how it’s feeling, what it wants, what’s going on. Give that healthy hunger or craving a voice and let it tell you what its message is. And practice listening!</p>
<p><strong>Do a body inventory to relax. </strong>Start with your toes and work upwards. Scan your body from the inside. Or try tensing each part slightly, then relaxing it to release residual tension.</p>
<p><strong>Practice mindfulness</strong>. Get used to tuning in to your physical self, wherever you are, whatever you’re doing.</p>
<p><strong>Take a walk in Nature, barefoot. </strong>Research teaches that contact with the earth offers amazing health benefits including lowering stress levels, improving sleep and circadian rhythms and decreasing chronic pain, inflammation and fatigue.</p>

Over 70 years of research has revealed that Happiness is achievable, and according to the Greater Good Science Center at UC Berkeley, happiness skills can be learned, taught, and practiced. Working together with the Greater Good Science Center, we identified six skills to form the foundation of LG&#8217;s Experience Happiness program: mindfulness, human connection, positive outlook, purpose, generosity, and gratitude. Although each person may take a different path, the practice and pursuit of these six skills can help set you on the path toward sustainable happiness.</p>

Soon after, her worn-out running shoes, her basketball, and her boxing gloves became things of the past. In 1994, after back surgery,<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><span class="il">Colleen</span>’s commitment to her yoga practice deepened. A graduate of Jivamukti’s 1998 teacher-training program,<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><span class="il">Colleen</span><span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>opened her own studio, Yoga Shanti, in Sag Harbor, in 1999. She has taught several yoga teacher trainings at Yoga Shanti, some with her husband, Rodney Yee.</p>
<p>The New York Times christened<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><span class="il">Colleen</span><span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>“The First Lady of Yoga,” in their recent profile of her on the front page of the<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><span class="aBn" tabindex="0" data-term="goog_1813266343"><span class="aQJ">Sunday</span></span><span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>Style section. She has also been featured in Vanity Fair, New York magazine, Oprah, Marie-Claire, Allure, and Yoga Journal. Before that she had a varied career: She was a cover girl, a student of shiatsu, and she lived in Calcutta, working with Mother Theresa at the Home for the Dying and Destitute.</p>

Work Mindfulness Project Event is really happening! <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/1f642.png" alt="🙂" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />  Keith Fiveson organized a wonderful event.  The event featured  Sharon Salzberg&#8217;s &#8220;Real Happiness at Work&#8221; meditations, Dr. Miles Neal, and  Dr. Joe Loizzo .    People attended to find out about neuroscience, mindfulness and employee and customer engagement.  So, I encourage you to come, bring your business friends, cards and brochures and take a morning for mindfulness. My hope and intention is that we may, as a community, help, transform, or create a pathway towards happier experiences in the workplace. Profits from this event will be donated to Nalanda Institute and back to the The Work Mindfulness Project development fund.</p>
