“On Burning Ground: A Son’s Memoir” (St. Martin’s Press/Macmillan) is a true narrative of radical masquerade: the story of how at the height of World War II a fair-haired rabbinical student assumed the identities of a Catholic and, more strategically, of a Muslim, to survive racial genocide. In effect, it is a journey to the end of night capturing the visceral danger and spiraling suspense of a young man alone in the world, bereft of any structure of support, outwitting his destiny.

This is a tale of a wartime chameleon, a man of multiple masks, who survived by ingenuity, daring, and deft maneuver. In a desperate gamble at life, a parochial student at one of Poland’s pre-eminent rabbinical academies used his many false “selves”–especially his assumed Muslim identity, which gave him cover for his circumcision–to fake his way into the belly of the beast, the dreaded Waffen-SS, the inner core of the Nazi killing machine, in order to survive certain death.

A story of total and terrifying self-reinvention, it demonstrates the multiple arts of passing: psychological daring, sartorial strategy (he had to look the part) and linguistic mastery (he had to sound the part) to stay alive. By necessity, it touches upon such issues as existential choice and dread, moral anguish and ambiguity, as well as the ever-tormenting question of means and ends, questions to animate intense educational, psychological and ethical discussion. After the war, Joseph Skakun returned to Judaism in a fog of anguish in Paris and then in New York, where he lived amid a supernova of memory and penance. Eid al-Fitr has a particular Salat (Islamic prayer) consisting of two Rakats (units) and generally offered in an open field or large hall. It may be performed only in congregation (Jama’at) and has an additional extra six Takbirs (raising of the hands to the ears while saying “Allāhu Akbar”, literally “God is great”), three of them in the beginning of the first raka’ah and three of them just before Ruku’ in the second raka’ah in the Hanafi school of Sunni Islam.^[3] Other Sunni schools usually have twelve Takbirs, seven in the first, and five at the beginning of the second raka’ah. This Eid al-Fitr salat is, depending on which juristic opinion is followed, Fard فرض (obligatory), Mustahabb مستحب (strongly recommended, just short of obligatory) or mandoob مندوب (preferable).

Muslims believe that they are commanded by Allah, as mentioned in the Quran, to continue their fast until the last day of Ramadan and pay the Zakat and fitra before offering the Eid prayers.

BROOKLYN, NY, July 17, 2015: Today, Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams joined Muslim Brooklynites in celebrating Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan. Last Thursday, he hosted an Iftar dinner in the courtroom of Brooklyn Borough Hall to break the daily Ramadan fast with over a hundred Muslim Brooklynites, including local religious leaders and ambassadors from Middle Eastern and Asian nations; over twenty-five area mosques and cultural organizations sponsored the celebration, which recognized a number of community members for their advocacy and support of issues affecting Muslim-Americans. Borough President Adams emphasized the importance of highlighting the borough’s religious diversity and strengthening interfaith ties.

“Our Muslim brothers and sisters are valued members of One Brooklyn, and we honor their commitment to faith and charity in this holy month of Ramadan,” said Borough President Adams. “Observances such as these are important times to celebrate our diversity and learn from each other’s traditions, embracing all that unites us. The desires to advance one’s ability to reflect inward and maintain self-control are not only intrinsic to Ramadan, but are universal aspirations. I hope this Ramadan was a positive spiritual opportunity, shared with family and friends, for all who practice. Eid Mubarak!”
