The Walt Disney World Resort, also called Walt Disney World and Disney World, is an entertainment complex in Bay Lake and Lake Buena Vista, Florida, in the United States, near the cities of Orlando and Kissimmee. Opened on October 1, 1971, the resort is owned and operated by Disney Parks, Experiences and Products, a division of The Walt Disney Company. It was first operated by Walt Disney World Company. The property covers nearly 25,000 acres (39 sq mi; 101 km2), of which only half has been used.[3] The resort comprises four theme parks (consisting of Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom), two water parks, 27 themed resort hotels, nine non-Disney hotels, several golf courses, a camping resort, and other entertainment venues, including the outdoor shopping center Disney Springs.

Designed to supplement Disneyland in Anaheim, California, which had opened in 1955, the complex was developed by Walt Disney in the 1960s. “The Florida Project”, as it was known, was intended to present a distinct vision with its own diverse set of attractions. Walt Disney’s original plans also called for the inclusion of an “Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow” (EPCOT), a planned community intended to serve as a test bed for new city-living innovations. Walt Disney died on December 15, 1966, during the initial planning of the complex. After his death, the company wrestled with the idea of whether to bring the Disneyworld project to fruition. However, Walt’s older brother, Roy, came out of retirement to make sure Walt’s biggest dream was realized. Construction started in 1967, with the company instead building a resort similar to Disneyland, abandoning the experimental concepts for a planned community. Magic Kingdom was the first theme park to open in the complex, in 1971, followed by Epcot (1982), Disney’s Hollywood Studios (1989), and Disney’s Animal Kingdom (1998). It was Roy who insisted the name of the entire complex be changed from Disneyworld to Walt Disney World, ensuring that people would remember that the project was Walt’s dream.

In 2018, Walt Disney World was the most visited vacation resort in the world, with an average annual attendance of more than 58 million.[4] The resort is the flagship destination of Disney’s worldwide corporate enterprise and has become a popular staple in American culture. In 2020, Walt Disney World was chosen to host the NBA Bubble for play of the 2019–20 season of the NBA to resume at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

Welcome to a somber Monday in sports. By now, you’ve heard that Lakers legend Kobe Bryant died in a helicopter crash in California on Sunday. Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, were among nine people killed in the crash as they were reportedly on their way to participate in travel basketball when the helicopter went down.
Kobe was 41 years old.
Here’s what we know right now:
The crash happened just before 10 a.m.
Nine confirmed deaths and no survivors
A brush fire caused by the crash prevented first responders from immediately getting to the site
An investigation of the crash is ongoing
Kobe was unquestionably one of the best players and biggest icons that the NBA has ever seen. He was also a complicated person who had a past that included a troubling allegation of sexual assault in 2003 (criminal charges were never filed and a civil case was settled out of court).
But regardless of your feelings toward Bryant, the fact remains that Sunday was one of the most tragic days that the sports world has seen in quite some time.
It’s a day that I’ll remember — at least in small, painful snippets — for a long time. I feel as though I’m always going to remember exactly where I was when I slid open the lock on my phone to find out that Kobe had died. I feel like I’m always going to remember how difficult that was to believe. And, most unfortunately, I feel like I’m always going to remember how much sadder the story got as the day(s) went on.
‌
What you need to know
1. Remembering Kobe
For a little while after the news broke, there was a sort of numbness. Kobe was a basketball legend, but he also had a larger-than-life persona. He seemed immortal, and it felt like he was going to be around basketball for a long, long time to come. It felt like an incredible second act was inevitable, partly because Kobe would refuse to accept anything less.

The emotional weight really started to set in once the tributes and the remembrances started pouring in. There was never really a doubt, but Bryant’s enormous impact became evident as figures in the sports world and beyond expressed their grief over the loss.
“I loved Kobe — he was like a little brother to me. We used to talk often, and I will miss those conversations very much. He was a fierce competitor, one of the greats of the game and a creative force.” -Michael Jordan
“This is hitting me really hard. I will always remember coming home after games so I could watch you dominate in the fourth quarter! You inspired so many around the world, including me.” -Dirk Nowitzki
“Kobe was a legend on the court and just getting started in what would have been just as meaningful a second act. To lose Gianna is even more heartbreaking to us as parents.” -Barack Obama
“People don’t know this, but he was my secret coach. He pushed me and motivated me, especially toward the end of my career when I needed him most.” – Alex Rodriguez
Kobe’s passing seemed to hit especially hard for those in the Lakers organization, where he spent his entire 20-year NBA career.
“I love him, his family and what he stood for on the court and off the court… the game of basketball & our city will never be the same without Kobe.” -Magic Johnson
“Most people will remember Kobe as the magnificent athlete who inspired a whole generation of basketball players. But I will always remember him as a man who was much more than an athlete.” -Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
“Kobe was so much more than an athlete, he was a family man. That was what we had most in common. I would hug his children like they were my own and he would embrace my kids like they were his.” -Shaquille O’Neal
Between the emotional messages and the photos/videos shared — especially those with both Kobe and Gianna — it was a really, really sad and painful day to get through.
2. Other tributes to Bryant’s legacy
Sunday’s tributes to Kobe went beyond just messages on Twitter. No matter where you turned your attention, Bryant’s presence was felt. There were a number of other ways that the basketball icon was remembered after his passing.

Lakers fans started a memorial outside of Staples Center on Sunday afternoon
Trae Young ditched his usual No. 11 and wore a No. 8 jersey to begin Sunday’s Hawks game
Several NBA teams voluntarily took 24-second shot clock violations and eight-second backcourt violations as a way to honor Bryant’s jersey numbers
NFL players delivered tributes to Bryant during Sunday’s Pro Bowl, including celebrations mimicking his trademark shooting form
Multiple artists, including Alicia Keys and Boyz II Men, paid tribute to Kobe at Sunday night’s Grammy Awards
Our NBA columnist Bill Reiter penned a pretty moving piece that reflects on Kobe’s legacy not only as a dominant basketball player but, more importantly, as a loving father to Gianna and his three surviving daughters:
“Kobe Bryant was a changed man, as we all are, in the love he had for his children,” wrote Reiter. “It added to the complications and the nuances that made him — and make him, still — the most beloved sports figure in Los Angeles history. It adds to the heartache and horror of what has happened.
“To say Kobe Bryant is just a single thing is to miss the 50 others that shaped him. He was all of them — the father, the husband, the star, all the complications and warts and greatness wrapped together. But fatherhood framed something about him that, while probably always there, cast his greatness and impact into a different, deeper light.”
3. Loss beyond Kobe
While we all grieve the loss of one of the NBA’s most iconic superstars, it’s important to remember that he was just one of nine people to perish on Sunday. The loss of Gianna Bryant, 13, with all of her potential and promise, is also gut-wrenching. We’ll never know the athlete and person she could have grown into, or the future generations of girls she could have inspired.
And then there’s Vanessa Bryant, who isn’t among the deceased but simultaneously becomes a widow, a grieving mother to a young child and a lone parent to three others. And those three girls simultaneously lose a father and a sister. It’s just absolutely brutal. There’s no other way to put it.

But the Bryant family isn’t the only one coping with loss following the crash, and we should all make sure to take time to think of each and every one of the nine victims, as well as those close to them.
John Altobelli, the head baseball coach at junior college powerhouse Orange Coast College, was also on board with his wife, Keri, and their daughter, Alyssa.
Girls’ basketball coach Christina Mauser died in the crash as well
Three other victims have yet to be identified
Chief medical examiner said the official identifications could take days
Aaron Judge, Scott Kingery, Michael Lorenzen and Jeff McNeil are among the current MLB players who played under Altobelli when he managed the Brewster Whitecaps in the Cape Cod League from 2012-2014. On Sunday, McNeil credited Altobelli as one of the biggest reasons he’s still playing professional baseball.
“Tough to hear the news of coach Altobelli,” tweeted McNeil. “One of my favorite coaches I have ever played for and one of the main reasons I got a chance to play professional baseball. Both the baseball and basketball world lost a great one today.”

Amy Chalfy of JASA shares the Good News of JASA and concern about Elder Abuse and how they help make the lives of Seniors better all around to age in place.

Amy Chalfy of JASA shares the Good News of JASA, Good News thanks JASA for doing such important work for years. According to the latest statistics from the NYC Department for the Aging, more than 18 percent, (over 1.52 million) of New Yorkers are over the age of 60. And this number is growing daily as the Boomer generation becomes the Senior population. To commemorate this wide and varied group, and to continue providing services and activities to keep them engaged, vital and cared for, JASA, one of New York’s largest and most trusted agencies serving more than 43,000 older adults in the New York metropolitan area, will host its annual Celebrating Seniors fundraiser on Tuesday, May 10. The Cocktail Reception will take place at 583 Park Avenue from 6 to 8 p.m. and we invite you to attend.

The Emcee for the evening is Jane Marsh, internationally acclaimed soprano and Artistic Advisor of the Metropolitan Opera Guild; the special celebrity guest is NBA legend, John Starks and, leading the bidding for the third year is Christie’s auctioneer extraordinaire, Toby Usnik. Also of particular note, is guest speaker Philip C. Marshall, elder-justice advocate and grandson of Brooke Astor. Mr. Marshall is a speaker in demand, whose work is particularly relevant and aligned with JASA’s service to the city’s more vulnerable seniors.
We would be happy to arrange an interview at the event with JASA’s special guests to discuss their commitment to the organization’s work, or with a JASA representative who can speak to you about the agency’s important role in a city that’s home to a senior population with a wide range of needs.

Event details for your readers who may wish to attend:
• Location: 583 Park Avenue, (corner of East 63rd Street) New York, NY Cost: Tickets are $500 and sponsorship packages are available.
• Dress: Business attire is preferred.
• For more information and tickets: visit www.jasa.org or contact development@jasa.org or call 212.273.5320.
About JASA:
Founded in 1968, JASA is a not-for profit organization that provides a range of services to seniors of all races, religions and economic backgrounds, to help keep seniors living safely in their own homes and communities with independence, dignity, and joy.

NBA Hall-of-Famer Jerry West was nicknamed “Mr. Clutch” for his amazing ability to come in strong on the court when it mattered most. Now, the 14-time NBA All-Star and legendary coach and manager is hoping to win—off the court—for a cause that hits home. Jerry shares a condition with as many as 6 million Americans called atrial fibrillation, or AFib, an irregular heartbeat that puts him at one-in-three odds of having a stroke in his lifetime. Since diagnosis, he has been working closely with his doctor to start and stay on treatment to help prevent a stroke due to AFib, and is now speaking out to encourage others with AFib to do the same.

More than half of people with AFib don’t believe that they are at an increased risk of stroke. People with AFib also may not realize that their stroke risk can change over time. That’s why, West and Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., are teaming up to help those living with AFib by offering a simple tool they can use to calculate their stroke risk at www.MyAFibRisk.com. It’s eight easy questions that can help those with AFib understand their risk and talk with their doctor about stroke risk management and treatment options.

For every person who goes to the website and calculates their risk, Janssen will make a contribution to Mended Hearts, a nonprofit peer-to-peer support network that inspires hope and helps to improve the quality of life for heart patients, their families and caregivers.

Dr. Mark J. Alberts will join Jerry West to address the risk of stroke associated with AFib and the importance of working with a doctor to determine an appropriate treatment plan that can help lower patient risk.

THE FACTS
•	Jerry West is currently an executive board member of the Golden State Warriors, who recently won the 2015 NBA Championship
•	West played for the Lakers from 1960 to 1974, and is believed to be the inspiration for the NBA logo
•	West was selected as one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History in 1997
•	Up to 6 million Americans are diagnosed with AFib, the most common serious heart rhythm abnormality in people over the age of 65
• One in three people with AFib will have a stroke in their lifetime

Isaiah Charles Austin (born October 25, 1993) is an American basketball player who recently completed his college career for the Baylor Bears. He had been considered a first-round prospect in the 2014 NBA draft until he was diagnosed with Marfan syndrome. On June 26, 2014, between the 15th and 16th picks of the 2014 draft, Commissioner Adam Silver made Austin a ceremonial pick, which fulfilled his dream of getting drafted. The crowd gave him a standing ovation as he walked up to the podium.

Thanks Jason Senders, Good News Sports Producer for suggesting this important and “life affirming” Good News Story.

Thanks to ESPN for broadcasting the draft and the NBA for doing such a honorable gesture.

Special thanks to Isaiah for inspiring so many with your positive conviction for making the most out of our lives.

Early years

Austin was born October 25, 1993 in Fresno, California to Ben and Lisa Green. His family later moved to Arlington, Texas where he grew up and attended Grace Preparatory Academy.

High school career

Austin attended Grace Preparatory Academy. As a senior, he averaged 15 points, 11 rebounds, and 5 blocks a game. This lead him to his second straight Fort Worth Star-Telegram Super Team Player of the Year. Austin participated in the 2012 McDonald’s All-American Game, 2012 Adidas Nations and the 2012 Jordan Brand Classic. In the McDonalds All-American Game, he recorded 10 points, 8 rebounds, 3 blocks and 2 assists to lead the West to victory. In the Jordan Brand Classic, he recorded 10 points, 8 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocks to again lead the West to victory. He was named to the ESPNHS All-American Elite second team and was the nations no. 3 recruit according to ESPN.

College career

In his freshman season at Baylor, Austin was named to the 2013 All-Big 12 third team and the Big 12 All-Rookie team. On April 4, 2013, he recorded 15 points, nine rebounds, five blocks, four assists and two steals in the NIT championship game in which Baylor defeated Iowa 74–54. In 35 games (all starts), he averaged 13.0 points, 8.3 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 1.7 blocks in 29.9 minutes per game.

In April 2013, he declared for the 2013 NBA draft, but later returned to Baylor due to a shoulder injury.

In his sophomore season, he was named to the 2014 Big 12 All-Defensive team. In 38 games, he averaged 11.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 3.1 blocks in 28.0 minutes per game.

On April 22, 2014, he declared for the 2014 NBA draft, forgoing his final two years of college eligibility.

On June 21, 2014, Austin learned that he had been diagnosed with Marfan syndrome, a genetic disorder that affects the body’s connective tissue. In an emotional interview with ESPN‘s Holly Rowe, Austin said that he could no longer play basketball at a competitive level since there was too much risk of his heart rupturing. In response, NBA commissioner Adam Silver invited Austin to attend the draft as his guest. Shortly after Austin’s diagnosis was made public, his agent revealed that Austin had taken out an insurance policy against career-ending disability through a special NCAA program. The amount of the policy was not disclosed, but the agent stated that it was at least $1 million. The policy would not have paid out if his career had ended due to the aforementioned shoulder injury or his eyesight, but is expected to pay out due to his Marfan diagnosis.

Personal

Austin is blind in his right eye from an injury he sustained in middle school. He had kept the injury a secret, known only to his teammates and close friends until January 17, 2014.

“The return of Jason Collins to the Nets franchise is a milestone for all Brooklynites to celebrate. He began his career with this team, helping it win its first Eastern Conference titles in back-to-back seasons, and was beloved by teammates and fans for his professionalism and leadership. Last year, he became the first active male athlete in one of America’s four major professional sports to publicly identify as gay. In doing so, he became a trailblazer for the LGBT community and a role model for every community, especially our young people. Today, Brooklyn is truly proud to be Jason’s hometown team, as he has brought us pride both on and off the court. I wish him the best of success in helping to bring our borough its first sports championship in 59 years. Let’s go Nets!”
