Testing blood glucose, also known as blood sugar, is an essential part of your diabetes care plan.

Depending on your current condition, you may need to visit your doctor several times a year for formal testing, according to the American Diabetes Association. You may also need to reach out to your doctor for preventive testing, such as cholesterol checks and eye exams.

While staying in touch with your doctor is important for staying on top of your treatment plan, you can and should test your blood sugar on your own as long as your healthcare team advises you to.

Self-monitoring your blood glucose may be vital to your treatment. Testing your own levels allows you to learn how to manage your blood sugar regardless of the time of day or where you are.

Learn how these tests work and talk with your doctor about the benefits of self-monitoring.

Your doctor will help you decide if you need to test your blood sugar at home. If you do, they’ll work out how often you should test and at what times of the day. They’ll also tell you what your blood sugar targets are.

You may consider diabetes home tests if you have:

type 1 diabetes

type 2 diabetes

By keeping track of blood glucose, you can discover problems in your current diabetes care.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)Trusted Source, typical blood glucose ranges between 70 to 99 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) while fasting and 140 mg/dL or below after eating.

Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) is below 70 mg/dL, and high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) is well above 140 mg/dL.

By maintaining glucose at an average range, you may help prevent diabetes complications. According to the CDCTrusted Source, these include:

One of the most common complications associated with diabetes is neuropathic pain associated with diabetic peripheral neuropathy of the feet (DPN), more commonly referred to as diabetic nerve pain. 2

http://nervepainandme.com/CONTEST

There are at least 5 million Americans in the US that suffer from painful DPN and 2.5 million (i.e., 50%) have unresolved pain despite first line treatments.

The symptoms associated with this nerve damage may be painful and include numbness, tingling, as well as burning, shooting or stabbing sensations that most often affect the extremities.3 Not all DPN is painful and many times the early symptoms start with numbness, pins and needles.

DPN is progressive and often starts with some tingles here and there – then it intensifies. As patients begin to lose important sensory information, they gain disruptive (and chronic) sensations like burning, pins and needles.

It is a progressive and debilitating complication of diabetes that was predicted to affect approximately more than 5 million Americans in 2021 and is expected to double by 2030.4-8

Some symptoms have been described by patients as:

Tingling: I feel “pins and needles” in my feet.9

Pain: I have burning, stabbing or shooting pains in my feet.9

Increased Senstivity: My feet are very sensitive to touch. For example, sometimes it hurts to have the bed covers touch my feet.9

Numbness or Weakness: I can’t feel my feet when I’m walking.

In recent years, the lack of effective, innovative treatment options have left many patients with a significant unmet medical need. While opioids have often been prescribed for the treatment of DPN, this treatment comes with risks and there is no substantial evidence that they are effective long term.

In February 2022, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued new draft guidance for clinicians who are prescribing opioids for outpatients with acute, subacute, or chronic pain.

The high use of opioids in people with painful diabetic neuropathy occurs despite the 2017 American Diabetes Acadamy position statement for DPN states that opioids, given safety concerns, are not recommended for use as first- or second-line agents. In addition, the recent 2021 American Academy of Neurology guidelines do not recommend the use of opioids for PDPN.

Now a new education campaign is underway which asks patients who are living with painful DPN and remain dissatisfied with treatment options to submit a short mnemonic acronym to help fellow patients experiencing painful DPN identify ways to describe their symptoms to healthcare providers.

The winning mnemonic will be included in a painful diabetic neuropathy toolkit and released for patients to help support empowered conversations with healthcare providers about solutions to symptoms and available/potential treatment options.

Kathy Sapp, CEO of the American Chronic Pain Association (ACPA), a foundation offering peer support and education in pain management and David Armstrong, DPM, MD, PhD USC Schaeffer Center, to discuss the need to increase awareness and recognition of painful DPN symptoms. They will also talk about building confidence to talk to your healthcare provider, being an empowered advocate for your treatment options and discuss the new education campaign.

Find Out More About this Condition

More than 34 million Americans – just over 1 in 10 – have diabetes, and neuropathic pain associated with diabetic peripheral neuropathy of the feet, or more commonly referred to as diabetic nerve pain, is one of its most common complications.

The painful symptoms associated with this nerve damage include numbness, tingling, as well as burning, shooting or stabbing sensations that most often affect the lower extremities.

It is a progressive and debilitating complication of diabetes that will affect approximately more than 5 million Americans in 2021 and is expected to double by 2030.

Lindsay Colbert, Executive Director of The Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy, and Dr. Rodica Pop-Busui, MD, PhD, Professor of Internal Medicine, Metabolism, Endocrinology and Diabetes and Vice Chair Clinical Research, Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor will be available to talk about the findings from a new national survey of patients that captured beliefs, perspectives and attitudes towards their diabetic nerve pain.

A key finding from the survey revealed an overwhelming 71% of patients desire change, and are seeking better treatments and a future with less pain. Furthermore, over a third of respondents reported needing to rest more; the most frequently reported necessary life-style change due to their pain.

Key Facts and Figures:

The lack of effective, innovative treatment options have left many patients with a significant unmet medical need

Two in five patients had to visit three or more doctors before getting the right diagnosis for their pain

58% of patients are not satisfied with the current treatment plan for their diabetic nerve foot pain

Find Out More About this Condition. Capsian Patch, … can be considered. a specific approved product is Qutinza
More than 34 million Americans – just over 1 in 10 – have diabetes1, and neuropathic pain associated with diabetic peripheral neuropathy of the feet, or more commonly referred to as diabetic nerve pain, is one of its most common complications.2
The painful symptoms associated with this nerve damage include numbness, tingling, as well as shooting or stabbing sensations that most often affect the lower extremities.3
Itis a progressive and debilitating complication of diabetes that will affect approximately more than 5 million Americans in 20204 and is expected to double by 2030.5
Joining us now to discuss neuropathic pain associated with diabetic peripheral neuropathy – or diabetic nerve pain – and this newly approved treatment option is Dr. David Simpson, Professor of Neurology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City.
Key Facts and Figures:
• The lack of effective, innovative treatment options has left many patients with a significant unmet medical need.
• The condition is more common in patients with type 2 diabetes and increases with age and duration of disease.
April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month

Parkinson’s, which is characterized by a loss of certain nerve cells in the brain that regulate functions like motor control, affects about one million people in the U.S. and millions more globally. It is the second most common progressive neurological disorder and research shows prevalence in the U.S. is increasing.

Parkinson’s symptoms can be challenging to diagnose. And even once diagnosed and put on baseline Parkinson’s treatment, many people with Parkinson’s experience a return of their symptoms between doses, bringing a new meaning to “feeling off.”

For these people, these fluctuations between periods when symptoms are controlled – known as ON periods – and periods when symptoms return – known as OFF periods or OFF episodes, can be very disruptive. During OFF periods, people with Parkinson’s are left with restricted or uncontrolled movement, reducing their mobility. A 2014 survey of more than 3,000 people with Parkinson’s conducted by The Michael J. Fox Foundation found that nearly two-thirds of participants reported having more than two hours of OFF time per day.

April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month, so it’s the perfect time to learn more about the condition, including the importance of speaking up and having effective conversations with your doctor.

Today, treatment options exist for people with Parkinson’s who experience OFF periods, including Bob Harmon, who was diagnosed 13 years ago. On March 27, 2019, Bob will share his personal story, including his participation in a clinical trial for one of these treatments, which was recently approved by the FDA. He will be joined by his neurologist, Dr. Robert Hauser, Director at Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders Center in Tampa, who can discuss the signs and symptoms of Parkinson’s disease and OFF periods, as well as ways to help manage them.

Bob and Dr. Hauser can also explain why it’s important to speak up about how you are feeling and get involved with efforts that may help others and yourself if you are living with a health condition.
