Realscreen is honoring the late Dr. Jane Goodall during the Realscreen Awards ceremony set for February 3, during the 2026 Realscreen Summit.

The world-renowned ethologist, conservationist, founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and UN Messenger of Peace is being celebrated with the Realscreen Action Award, which recognizes individuals whose work within the unscripted and non-fiction content sector has inspired meaningful social impact and driven positive change in the industry and beyond. Last year’s recipient of the Action Award was acclaimed filmmaker Dawn Porter.

Dr. Goodall’s work in the field as a pre-eminent scientist and animal behavior expert, and as a global voice for community-centered conservation and biodiversity protection, has been the focal point of scores of documentary films and series, dating back to 1965’s Miss Goodall and the Wild Chimpanzees, narrated by Orson Welles for National Geographic, to Brett Morgen’s riveting 2017 documentary Jane, also for Nat Geo. Through Jane Goodall Productions, she and her team have been in production and development on many upcoming projects, including Matriarch, a collaboration with BBC Studios, PBS and the WNET Group. Her passing in October of this year led to an outpouring of love from around the world, spanning world leaders, noted celebrities and inspired citizens — all of whom have been touched by her legacy.

“Over the span of decades, Jane Goodall’s name has been synonymous with the ideas of conservation, care for the animal kingdom and curiosity, and her presence and creative leadership in more than 40 documentaries and films, reflecting the important work of the Jane Goodall Institute, has cemented that status,” said Barry Walsh, content director and editor-in-chief for Realscreen. “We are honored to celebrate her lifetime of contribution — not only to the world of wildlife documentary, but to our understanding of the world around us — with our Action Award.”

Accepting the award on Dr. Goodall’s behalf will be her longtime film collaborator and the Jane Goodall Institute’s wildlife cinematographer, Bill Wallauer.

Established in 2010, the Realscreen Awards, held annually during the Realscreen Summit, have become a benchmark for excellence in non-fiction and unscripted content, celebrating the most innovative and impactful work from around the globe.

Jane Turton, CEO of All3Media, will also be inducted into the Realscreen Hall of Fame, and will take part in a keynote conversation at the Summit, bringing her unique perspective on the evolving global content industry.

Cyberspace is one of the most critical areas of our nation’s defense and is a 24/7 responsibility for Soldiers stationed around the world as part of U.S. Army Cyber Command.
The U.S. Army Cyber Command engages in cyberwarfare against global cyber threats and adversaries, secures the country’s military data networks and weapons platforms, facilitates communications between joint military operations, and protects critical U.S. infrastructure. These elite cyber operators are highly trained to perform under pressure confidently, making them some of the most capable and combat-ready warriors in the U.S. military.
Major Erika Alvarado is a Cyber Operations Planner and Deputy Commander and Training Officer for the U.S. Army Reserve Cyber Protection Brigade – which supports the U.S. Army Cyber Command. In her role, Major Alvarado helps the Army keep pace with rapidly changing cyber capabilities and technologies to protect the country from cyber threats and attacks worldwide.
Major Alvarado enlisted in the Army Reserve at 17-years-old and today is one of the many skilled Army Soldiers serving our nation as the country’s first line of defense in cyberspace.
Cybersecurity is the fastest-growing field in the nation. The Army is well-positioned to train the next generation of cyber experts with opportunities to become analysts, coders, data scientists, and planners for roles in cyber operations, electronic warfare, cryptologic cyber intelligence, and more.
Major Alvarado will be available to discuss the importance of cybersecurity awareness, her role with the U.S. Army Cyber Command, and what it’s like to be engaged in today’s cyberspace fight.

Kudos to WXXI Public Broadcasting for airing “Asian Americans,” a five-part series to take us back in time from the 1800s to present. Knowing and learning history lessons will teach us to make better decisions today and for our future. Below is a description of each episode. We have partnered with WXXI to spotlight local Asian Americans from Rochester, New York. Please tune in and feel free to forward to your families, friends and networks!

Episode 1 – Breaking Ground

Monday 5/11 at 8 p.m.

In an era of exclusion and U.S. empire, new immigrants arrive from China, India, Japan, the Philippines and beyond. Barred by anti-Asian laws they become America’s first “undocumented immigrants,” yet build railroads that dazzle on the silver screen, and take their fight for equality to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Episode 2 – Question of Loyalty

Monday 5/11 at 9 p.m.

An American-born generation straddles their country of birth and their parents’ homelands in Japan and Korea. Those loyalties are tested during World War II, when families are imprisoned in detention camps, and brothers find themselves on opposite sides of the battle lines.

Episode 3 – Good Americans

Tuesday 5/12 at 8 p.m.

During the Cold War years, Asian Americans are simultaneously heralded as a Model Minority, and targeted as the perpetual foreigner. It is also a time of bold ambition, as Asian Americans aspire for the first time to national political office and a coming culture-quake simmers beneath the surface.

Episode 4 – Generation Rising

Tuesday 5/12 at 9 p.m.

During a time of war and social tumult, as young generation fights for equality in the fields, on campuses and in the culture, and claims a new identity: Asian Americans. The war’s aftermath brings new immigrants and refugees who expand the population and the definition of Asian America.

Episode 5 – Breaking Through

Tuesday 5/12 at 10 p.m.

At the turn of the new millennium, the national conversation turns to immigration, race, and economic disparity. As the U.S. becomes more diverse, yet more divided, a new generation of Asian Americans tackle the question, how do we as a nation move forward together?

Neuroscientists have discovered evidence for the neural basis of a mind-body connection.
They have identified the neural networks that connect the cerebral cortex to the adrenal medulla, which is responsible for the body’s rapid response in stressful situations.
Specifically, the findings shed new light on how stress, depression, and other mental states can alter organ function, and show that there is a real anatomical basis for psychosomatic illness.
The research also provides a concrete neural substrate that may help explain why meditation and certain exercises such as yoga and Pilates can be so helpful in modulating the body’s responses to physical, mental, and emotional stress.
“Our results turned out to be much more complex and interesting than we imagined before we began this study,” says senior author Peter L. Strick, chair of the neurobiology department and scientific director of the University of Pittsburgh Brain Institute.
Tracing networks of neurons
In their experiments, the scientists traced the neural circuitry that links areas of the cerebral cortex to the adrenal medulla (the inner part of the adrenal gland, which is located above each kidney).
The sheer number of neural networks they discovered surprised the scientists.
Other investigators had suspected that one or, perhaps, two cortical areas might be responsible for the control of the adrenal medulla. The actual number and location of the cortical areas were uncertain.
In the study, the Strick laboratory used a unique tracing method that involves rabies virus. This approach is capable of revealing long chains of interconnected neurons.
Using this approach, Strick and his colleagues demonstrated that the control of the adrenal medulla originates from multiple cortical areas.
According to the new findings, the biggest influences arise from motor areas of the cerebral cortex and from other cortical areas involved in cognition and affect.
Fight or flight or something else
Why does it matter which cortical areas influence the adrenal medulla? Acute responses to stress include a wide variety of changes such as a pounding heart, sweating, and dilated pupils.
These responses help prepare the body for action and often are characterized as “fight or flight responses.”
Many situations in modern life call for a more thought-out reaction than simple “fight or flight,” and it is clear that we have some cognitive control (or what neuroscientists call “top-down” control) over our responses to stress.
“Because we have a cortex, we have options,” says Strick. “If someone insults you, you don’t have to punch them or flee.
You might have a more nuanced response and ignore the insult or make a witty comeback. These options are part of what the cerebral cortex provides.”
Another surprising result was that motor areas in the cerebral cortex, involved in the planning and performance of movement, provide a substantial input to the adrenal medulla.
One of these areas is a portion of the primary motor cortex that is concerned with the control of axial body movement and posture.
This input to the adrenal medulla may explain why core body exercises are so helpful in modulating responses to stress.
Calming practices such as Pilates, yoga, tai chi, and even dancing in a small space all require proper skeletal alignment, coordination, and flexibility.
Conflict and mess-ups
The study also revealed that the areas of the cortex that are active when we sense conflict, or are aware that we have made an error, are a source of influence over the adrenal medulla.
“This observation,” says Strick, “raises the possibility that activity in these cortical areas when you re-imagine an error, or beat yourself up over a mistake, or think about a traumatic event, results in descending signals that influence the adrenal medulla in just the same way as the actual event.”
These anatomical findings have relevance for therapies that deal with post-traumatic stress.
Additional links with the adrenal medulla were discovered in cortical areas that are active during mindful mediation and areas that show changes in bipolar familial depression.
“One way of summarizing our results is that we may have uncovered the stress and depression connectome,” says Strick.
Overall, these results indicate that circuits exist to link movement, cognition, and affect to the function of the adrenal medulla and the control of stress.
This circuitry may mediate the effects of internal states like chronic stress and depression on organ function and, thus, provide a concrete neural substrate for some psychosomatic illness.
The National Institutes of Health and the Pennsylvania Department of Health supported the work, which appears early online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
