NEW YORK, NY — Alina Bonsell, candidate for New York State Senate District 28, announced today that she will be running on an additional, independent ballot line named “Jewish Safety” alongside her Republican candidacy in the November 3, 2026, general election.

The announcement comes as independent petitioning will start April 14 through May 23, 2026, during which Bonsell’s campaign must collect 5,000 total signatures to ensure at least 3,000 qualified signatures from registered voters across the district.

New York State Senate District 28 spans Manhattan’s East Side, including East 14th Street through East 96th Street, Central Park South, and Roosevelt Island.

“The Jewish Safety line is about bringing people together across party lines around something fundamental: safety, identity, and shared values,” said Bonsell. “This is about building a coalition that reflects the reality of our community, not forcing people into political boxes.”

Bonsell previously ran for New York City Council in 2025, where she built a broad base of support across the district and demonstrated strong crossover appeal among Republicans, Independents, and Democrats alike.

The creation of the “Jewish Safety” line reflects that same coalition-building strategy, aimed at engaging voters who may not align with a single party but want leadership that prioritizes safety, stability, and common-sense solutions.

For Bonsell, the issue is deeply personal. “My family came to this country from the former Soviet Union because of antisemitism,” she said. “Jewish safety is not abstract to me, instead it’s part of my family’s history and part of why I’m running. No one in this city should feel unsafe because of who they are.”

“To move New York forward, we need leadership that is practical, not ideological,” Bonsell said. “People want safer streets, lower costs, and a government that actually works. That’s what I’m running to deliver for my neighbors.”

With a compressed petitioning timeline, the campaign is mobilizing aggressively to meet ballot requirements and is seeking to raise $20,000 to fund staffing and operations necessary to collect signatures across the district.

“This is a grassroots effort with a clear goal,” Bonsell added. “If we want real representation, it takes real participation. I’m asking people across our community to step in, sign, volunteer, and help us get this done.”

Xiaohuan Zhao, a professor in Chinese studies at the University of Sydney, says “rather than predicting disaster, traditional readings frame the fire horse year as a period where heightened energy needs to be managed wisely”.

“Slowing down before making major decisions, staying grounded, and cultivating emotional steadiness are … key ways to navigate the year’s momentum”, he adds.

Grace Niu, a Sydney-based feng shui consultant, also suggests caution, saying that the fire horse year amplifies every natural trait to an intense degree, resulting in “unstoppable drive [and] immense passion … but like a wildfire, that energy must be directed or it can burn through everything – including themselves”.

Pan Wang, an associate professor of Chinese studies at the University of New South Wales, says that based on historical patterns, the fire horse year is predicted to be a challenging period marked by upheaval. “The fire element can manifest as instability and violence, as well as heated economic development and rapid, sometimes reckless, growth.”

According to Zhao, industries “connected with movement, heat or rapid change such as technology, finance, transportation, energy and entertainment may feel the fire horse year’s fast and intense pace more strongly”.

But not all clashes are bad. For Lee, clashes in energy can bring vital change. “When we experience our lives being stagnant … we actually welcome clashes because it can be transformed into breakthroughs,” she says.

What’s the best way to navigate the year?

The key is to stay grounded. Balancing the fire with water-element practices such as slowing down, meditating and hydrating can help, the Sydney-based feng shui expert Mina Zheng says.

Everybody will experience too much fire, she says, adding: “We need to drink a lot more water, more than before, and we also need to cherish water.”

Zheng highlights the balancing power of the earth element to help offset fire. She recommends eating more earthy root vegetables like potatoes and carrots.

Thierry Chow, a Hong Kong-based feng shui expert, suggests wearing certain colours. She says those born in the summer months should “wear more cool tones to help balance out the heavy fire … such as silver, gold, blue and white”.

Definitely do not fear, Pan says. “I think the fire horse is a self-paradoxical year: it can bring extreme success, such as rapid career progression, but it can also be extremely challenging if one burns out or succumbs to anxiety, which may lead to failure. That said, if we harness the fire horse well, there’s nothing to fear. Embrace the challenge and find a balance!”

A Message from the Comptroller   Budget season is in full swing and I just returned from Albany where I testified about the state of the City’s finances, the significant challenges we currently face, and the urgent need for greater investment in New York City through State funding. As you’ve likely heard, the City faces a multi-billion-dollar budget gap in the next two years. It’s not all doom and gloom, however; revenue is high and revised tax receipts are up this year. Still, New York remains a city of contradictions. The stock market is at an all-time high — the Dow above 50,000 for the first time ever — yet nearly 90,000 New Yorkers slept in our shelters last night. New York City is home to more billionaires than any other city in the world. And yet nearly one in four New Yorkers live in poverty. That’s 2 million people, including 420,000 children. And this month’s New York by the Numbers, our monthly economic snapshot, reflects that disconnect. While New York City’s office market has continued its steady and robust rebound in early 2026, job growth remains stagnant, with weekly jobless claims creeping upward in January and persistent hiring challenges for recent graduates which could further hamper future job growth. Rents continue to soar, which means shelter costs and the City’s contribution to rent subsidy programs are also rising. At the same time, New York City remains a preeminent destination with tourism numbers coming in stronger than last January and higher consumer confidence than the rest of the country. These contradictions are also evident in the City’s budget. With a fiscal gap not seen since the Great Recession, all options are on the table and a stronger partnership with Albany will be essential — after all, New York City sends far more money to the state than we receive in return; by one recent estimate, more than $20 billion. If we act now with clarity, urgency, and a real partnership with Albany, we can create a more resilient fiscal foundation, steel ourselves for the uncertainty ahead, and be a city and state that leaves no one behind.
