GSI Newsletter: The legacy of FW de Klerk, creative dissent, the digital power of women

Dear Friends,

I had the honor of delivering the 4^th FW de Klerk Annual Memorial Lecture in Cape Town, South Africa last week.

I was privileged to work with former South African President FW de Klerk at numerous Summits of Nobel Peace Laureates, an organization founded by President Mikhail Gorbachev which convenes Peace Laureates at extraordinary conferences on a regular basis and with which I am honored to serve as its Representative to the United Nations. I draw your attention to the Final Declarations, which contain expressions of collective wisdom and practicality. President de Klerk’s contributions were always substantive, terse, and clear.

We traveled together on a delegation hosted by Bahrain which the Global Security Institute helped coordinate. He demonstrated courage in his work to help end apartheid in South Africa and I observed his humility, and warmth wherever he went.

Ambassador Thomas Graham, a member of GSI’s Board of Directors was instrumental in the creation and signing of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty as the lead diplomat for the United States on the issue. His historic analysis is essential reading for anyone serious about understanding its creation and importance. The Treaty’s relationship to the stability of the nonproliferation regime and the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty is the focus of an in-depth, but short, study by the European Leadership Network.

President Clinton’s characterization of the Treaty is succinct and accurate… “I was honored to be the first of 146 leaders to sign the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, our commitment to end all nuclear tests for all time — the longest-sought, hardest-fought prize in the history of arms control. It will help to prevent the nuclear powers from developing more advanced and more dangerous weapons. It will limit the possibilities for other states to acquire such devices… Our common goal should be to enter the CTBT into force as soon as possible, and I ask for all of you to support that goal.” Note also quotes from Presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy on the subject.

You might also enjoy my thoughts regarding the recent apparent order by President Trump to resume nuclear testing and U.S. votes on this subject in the UN General Assembly, addressed in a syndicated article by the Inter Press Service. My quotes are outstanding in their unique grammatical awkwardness, unnecessary loquaciousness, exemplifying an overly pedantic series of run-on sentences, which in summary strongly urge against the resumption of testing and emphasize the need for cooperation to address an abundance of threats to us all.

On 21 November, I will address the third Annual Digital Power of Women Conference. This distinguished event powerfully advances much-needed gender balance. I hope you can join virtually.

GSI Advisory Board Member Honorable Douglas Roche’s very personal article Creative Dissent: A Politician’s Struggle for Peace merits a serious quiet read. It is inspiring because it reveals the character of one of the most effective, wise, and passionate advocates for nuclear disarmament and human security of our time.

Jonathan Granoff Delivers Keynote at Fourth FW de Klerk Memorial Lecture

On 11 November 2025, the FW de Klerk Foundation, in collaboration with the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, hosted the Fourth FW de Klerk Memorial Lecture, to commemorate President De Klerk’s legacy.

The Foundation hosted Jonathan Granoff, President of the Global Security Institute, as the keynote speaker, who delivered a lecture on: “FW de Klerk’s Commitment to Justice: Transformation, Constitutionalism and the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons”.

In his lecture, Jonathan reflected on his many meetings with Mr De Klerk at World Summits of Nobel Peace Laureates, some of Mr De Klerk’s greatest achievements — such as initiating South Africa’s constitutional transformation, abolishing South Africa’s nuclear arsenal and making South Africa a leading member of the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty.

On October 23, 2025, Global Security Institute Advisory Board Member, the Hon. Douglas Roche O.C., received an award from the Canadian Leadership for Nuclear Disarmament (CLND) for Distinguished Achievement in Nuclear Disarmament. It was followed by a lecture given by Mr. Roche titled Creative Dissent: A Politician’s Struggle for Peace.

US Stands Alone Defying UN Vote on Nuclear Test Ban Treaty

The US took another step backward – to break ranks with the United Nations– when it voted against a draft resolution calling for the entry into force of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). The negative vote followed an announcement by President Trump last month that the US plans to resume nuclear testing after a 33-year hiatus. The US stood alone on the UN vote, which was supported by almost all member States in the General Assembly’s First Committee.

Universal Peace Federation Honors the United Nations and Its Legacy of Peace

This week, as we observe UN Disarmament Week and the 80th Anniversary of the United Nations, we reflect on eight decades of commitment to global dialogue, cooperation, and security. The Universal Peace Federation (UPF) reaffirms its support for the UN’s vision for a world united through service, moral leadership, and dialogue. This reminds us that lasting peace begins with faith in human dignity and shared responsibility.

October has long been significant in UPF’s history. In 2005, Founders Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon and Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon inaugurated the Baltic region in Vilnius, Lithuania, declaring that true freedom exists for the common good. Their tour continued to Warsaw and Prague, spreading messages of moral renewal and peace. UPF has since hosted interfaith conferences in Israel, African peace conferences, and youth initiatives across Europe and Asia, demonstrating that dialogue, education, and collaboration are vital for reconciliation and unity.

Today, Ambassadors for Peace and partner organizations continue this work worldwide through forums, interfaith dialogues, and volunteer programs. Many align their efforts with UN Disarmament Week, emphasizing that peace is not only the reduction of weapons but also the moral act of disarming prejudice and fear. UPF’s message remains clear: global peace begins with individual conscience and service, and connecting local action with international ideals makes the dream of a peaceful world a reality.

Religious Leaders Unite for Faith
and Freedom

On October 16, 2025, the Universal Peace Federation (UPF), FFWPU-Capital Family Church, and ACLC hosted the “Peace Starts With Me Alliance” Religious Freedom Prayer Luncheon at The Washington Times building. Despite only a week’s notice, 40 faith and community leaders gathered to support religious liberty and interfaith solidarity, focusing on the detention of Mother Han, co-founder of the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification, and other Christian leaders in South Korea.

Dr. Achile Acolatse, Southeast Region Director, called the gathering an urgent reminder to defend freedom of faith, while Dr. Michael Jenkins, UPF-North America President, highlighted Mother Han’s decades-long work promoting peace, dialogue, and humanitarian efforts. Leaders from Christianity, Islam, and Sikhism offered prayers, shared messages of solidarity, and coordinated special prayer services to advocate for justice and freedom.

The event exemplified the unifying power of faith, showing that when communities come together, they can inspire hope, protect religious rights, and advance peace for all.

LAPD Celebrates United Nations Day
with UPF

On United Nations Day, October 24, the Universal Peace Federation (UPF) reaffirms its mission to build “one human family under God.” Founded by Rev. Sun Myung Moon and Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, UPF holds consultative status with the UN, enabling it to bring local peace initiatives into global discussions on human dignity and cooperation.

Earlier this October, UPF Los Angeles hosted the “Faith in Blue” event with Ambassadors for Peace, local ministers, LAPD officers, and community leaders, fostering dialogue and collaboration to strengthen community safety and harmony. Across the U.S., UPF’s Ambassadors for Peace continue to lead interfaith and civic initiatives, showing that peace is built one action, one relationship, and one community at a time.

Salisbury Mayor Inaugurates
Peace Road Day

Salisbury Mayor Randolph J. Taylor officially inaugurated Peace Road Day in Salisbury, MD on October 11, 2025. The community came together in a powerful display of faith, unity, and hope for peace. Hosted by the Universal Peace Federation (UPF), founded by Rev. Sun Myung Moon and Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, the event highlighted UPF’s vision of “one human family under God” and its mission to transform communities through interfaith dialogue and action.

The day featured uplifting music by the Canvas Church Worship Team, inspiring peace messages from Christian, Muslim, and Jewish leaders, and a proclamation from Mayor Randolph J. Taylor designating October 12th as Peace Road Day. UPF-USA President Dr. Michael Jenkins appointed new Ambassadors for Peace, including Mayor Taylor, who are dedicated to fostering reconciliation, unity, and the ethic of “living for the sake of others.”

The celebration concluded with a 0.8-mile Peace Walk, bringing together ministers, Ambassadors for Peace, civic leaders, and 100 participants in a tangible expression of shared commitment to harmony and hope. Salisbury Peace Road showed how UPF and its Ambassadors turn the dream of peace into real-world action.

On Thursday, November 21st at 11am, the NYC Mayor’s Office of Climate & Environmental Justice in collaboration with NYC Parks and other stakeholders, will hold a press event in Mott Haven in the Bronx to kickoff of the planning phase of the city’s first Urban Forest Plan, as required by Local Law 148 of 2023. The Urban Forest Plan advances a key goal in PlaNYC, Mayor Adams’s long-term strategic climate plan, to achieve a 30 percent tree canopy cover.

We would love to have you join us! The event will be held at the Gil Scott-Heron Amphitheater in St. Mary’s Park in Mott Haven.

Your collaboration will be especially valuable as we work to develop and implement The Urban Forest Plan. This critical document will outline strategies to equitably expand the city’s tree canopy to ease extreme heat and advance environmental justice; objectives that are incredibly important to city government and New Yorkers alike.

As we noted in previous communications, our coalition was instrumental in the passage of Local Law 148 of 2023 which mandated this Plan – that was a massive win! We would love to continue to sustain our presence and momentum as champions of the urban forest, so please consider joining us at this event.

The Mars Ocean Analogs® crew is set to embark on a groundbreaking sailing mission this November, departing from New York City on the historic Schooner Anne Starship. Led by veteran sea captain and world record holder Reid Stowe, the team will undertake NYC’s first-ever high seas analog training for aspiring astronauts. This mission, scheduled from November 16 to November 26, will simulate the extreme conditions of danger, high performance, isolation and self-sufficiency that astronauts will face during future missions to Mars.

The Schooner Anne is the same vessel that Stowe commanded on the longest sea voyage in history, spending 1,152 days continuously at sea without resupply from 2007 to 2010—an unprecedented analog for a journey to Mars. During that voyage, Stowe and his crew navigated far beyond the sight of land, in conditions similar to what astronauts will experience during a three-year mission to Mars.

Why Is This Mission So Critical Now?

As space agencies worldwide accelerate their plans to send humans to Mars, a crucial gap remains in astronaut training. The human mission to Mars and back is expected to take approximately three years, during which astronauts will be isolated in a cramped, high-stakes environment—one that only Reid Stowe has simulated continuously over three years through his record-breaking voyage.

“Mars aspiring trainees must gain experience in the isolated, life-and-death expanse of the high seas to truly prepare for the challenges of a Mars mission,” explains Stowe, Commander of the Schooner Anne. “While billions of dollars are being invested in space technology, extreme astronaut training at sea is being overlooked. The human element is the weak link, and our mission is to strengthen that by offering real-world, high-seas analogs that push both physical and psychological limits.”

A Proven Training Ground

This upcoming mission will be the Mars Ocean Analog team’s fifth high-seas expedition, following four successful voyages that have attracted global media attention and support, including a mission to the SpaceX launch pad near the U.S.-Mexico border.

MONTHLY HEALTH AWARENESS

INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL PREPAREDNESS

It’s finally summer! With the close of the school year and the guarantee of warm weather, we have secured our travel plans or are in the process of securing them. As such, we need it is imperative that we deploy every possible measure to secure our efforts. Please be reminded that global travel includes the risk of communicable diseases rarely transmitted in the United States. Therefore, it is vital to ensure that all routine immunizations are up to day. American’s or those residing in America, planning to travel abroad should consult their doctors at least six weeks before traveling if they are unsure about whether they are up to date on their vaccines, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) now says, in order to avoid catching a highly contagious virus during their trip. Make an appointment with your healthcare provider or a travel health specialist that takes place at least one month before you leave. They can help you get destination-specific vaccines, medicines, and information. Discussing your health concerns, itinerary, and planned activities with your provider allows them to give more specific advice and recommendations. Check CDC’s Travel Health for your destination to see what vaccines or medicines you may need and what diseases or health risks are a concern at your destination.

MINORITY/BIPOC MENTAL HEALTH MONTH

BIPOC Mental Health Month originated as “National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month,” BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) Mental Health Month was created to bring awareness to the unique mental health challenges of historically disenfranchised and oppressed racial and ethnic groups in the United States. Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) experience mental illness at similar rates as white people, but they’re less likely to get treatment due to cultural barriers, stigma, and lack of access to care. These disparities can have a serious impact on BIPOC mental health. According to the Anxiety & Depression Association of America (ADAA), BIPOC often experience increased levels of mental health struggles due to the compounding impacts of racial trauma, socioeconomic gaps, and a lack of representation and access to care within the mental health industry.

HEALTHY VISION MONTH

Vision loss can have a major impact on every part of life. Having a visual impairment can create challenges in performing everyday tasks, and the stigma around losing vision can be isolating — causing feelings of fear, anxiety, depression, or grief. According to the CDC, more than 3.4 million Americans aged 40 years and older are blind or visually impaired. Other estimates of vision problems go as high as 21 million people. Additionally, about 80 million Americans have diseases that can cause blindness. Research shows that early detection and treatment can prevent blindness and vision impairment. Screening and treatment for common eye conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, and glaucoma are available. Help yourself and others live their healthiest lives.
