THE PERFORMANCE

On Friday, April 9th, Barrier Free Livings Non-Residential Domestic Violence Program will be hosting a fundraiser to raise awareness regarding domestic violence in the Deaf community. The event will include a performance, Dangerously Silent, written by Nicolyn Plummer, MSW. Ms. Plummer works with Deaf and Hard of Hearing survivors of domestic violence at Barrier Free Living. BFL consumers and Laguardia Community College ASL students will perform, and ASL interpreters will be provided. The event will take place at the Vincent Fontana Center, located at 27 Christopher Street in Manhattan, at 3pm. A donation of $15 is suggested for admittance. Anyone interested in attending should email Nicolyn Plummer at nicolynp@bflnyc.org. Please note that the content of the performance, which deals with themes of domestic violence, is not suitable for children under the age of 16.

BARRIER FREE LIVING

Celebrating over 28 years of service, Barrier Free Living (BFL) is dedicated to helping New Yorkers with disabilities live independently in the community.Our motto: “Helping People with Disabilities Help Themselves.”

BFL provides a range of services and linkages to other community resources through our various programs, enabling individuals to overcome the obstacles that stand in the way of their living dignified, secure lives.

* Freedom House, a 44-apartment family emergency shelter for domestic violence survivors with disabilities and domestic violence survivors with children with disabilities;
* The Secret Garden, a non-residential domestic violence intervention program providing case management, individual advocacy and safety planning for individuals with disabilities who have also experienced domestic violence;
* Transitional Housing, providing 24 single women and 24 single men with disabilities with shelter, case management, and independent living skills training and serving as the only program in New York City where homeless people requiring the services of a homecare attendant can find shelter;
* Outreach Team, a program that reaches out to physically disabled homeless adults with mental illness and chemical addictions and provides to them information and referrals, case management, and housing assistance services.
