NOLA to NOFO Announces Donald Harrison’s Second Annual Quantum Leap
Music Festival at Long Island’s Oldest Vineyard
Cutchogue, NY — NOLA to NOFO, LLC proudly announces the return of the
Quantum Leap Music Festival, curated and hosted by NEA Jazz Master and
architect of Nouveau Swing, Big Chief Donald Harrison Jr. The four-day festival
will be held from August 14th to 17th, 2025 at the historic Borghese Vineyard &
Winery, located at 17150 Middle Road (Route 48), Cutchogue, Long Island, NY.
Building upon the resounding success of its inaugural year, the 2025 Quantum
Leap Music Festival promises an unparalleled fusion of world-class New Orleans
music, North Fork’s finest food and beverages, and a vibrant cultural experience
unlike any other. Gates open at 3:00 PM daily, with live music performances
from 4:00 PM to 11:00 PM. This event is strictly for ages 21 and over.
A Message from Artistic Director Donald Harrison:
“At the Quantum Leap Music Festival, NOLA to NOFO and I present a wide
stylistic range of New Orleans’ greatest musical artists in their respective
styles—from jazz, blues, and funk, to soul-drenched, dance-oriented jazzy
bounce parties. From traditional jazz and modern jazz with touches of soul,
to zydeco, klezmer, and other New Orleans music. This festival has
something for everyone and will expose festival-goers to styles of music you
may not have heard before, but you will leave loving. You can chill, dance, or
party, as this intimate festival bridges aspects of many of your favorite music
at the historic Borghese Vineyard & Winery in the beautiful setting of North
Fork, Long Island.”

LEUKEMIA IS A TYPE OF CANCER THAT AFFECTS THE BLOOD OR BONE MARROW. 1 ONE TYPE IS PHILADELPHIA CHROMOSOME-POSITIVE CHRONIC MYELOID (MY’-uh-loyd) LEUKEMIA.

SOME PATIENTS WITH C-M-L MAY HAVE DIFFICULTY FINDING A TREATMENT THAT’S RIGHT FOR THEM.

ALMOST 15% OF C-M-L PATIENTS DISCONTINUE THEIR TREATMENT IN THE FIRST YEAR DUE TO SIDE EFFECTS, SO HAVING DIFFERENT OPTIONS IS CRITICAL.3-7

HERE TO SHARE HER OWN EXPERIENCE BEING DIAGNOSED WITH PHILADELPHIA CHROMOSOME-POSITIVE C-M-L IN CHRONIC PHASE AND HOW SHE FOUND A TREATMENT THAT WORKED FOR HER, IS TEACHER AND C-M-L PATIENT, JEN. AND HERE TO TALK ABOUT TREATING ADULTS WITH C-M-L, IS DR. JAMES DUGAN (DOO’-guhn.)

HCP Bio: Dr. James Dugan

Dr. James Dugan is a hematology/oncology specialist, and the physician lead for the transplant and cellular therapy department for Novant Health Cancer Institute in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Dr. Dugan was drawn to the field of oncology by the opportunity to improve a person’s life during a difficult time. He believes that to properly treat the whole person and not just the disease, physicians need to engage in active conversations with the patient throughout the treatment process. Dr. Dugan approaches medicine and oncology as a partnership between the physician and the patient.

Dr. Dugan is a member of the American Society of Hematology, as well as the American Society for Transplant and Cellular therapy. His membership in these organizations keeps him up-to-date on the latest research and treatment options in the field.

When he is not seeing patients, Dr. Dugan enjoys time with his wife and three daughters. He is an outdoor enthusiast who enjoys skiing, scuba diving, kite surfing, and long-distance running. He is passionate about the shared human experience and loves meeting new people and exploring new ideas and places.

Patient Bio: Jen

In 2014, Jen was diagnosed with Philadelphia chromosome positive chronic myeloid leukemia (Ph+ CML) in chronic phase (CP).
Prior to her diagnosis, Jen devoted her career to serving others. After dedicating 20 years to running inner-city youth programs, Jen became a social worker, supporting women as they rebuilt their lives after incarceration or experiencing domestic violence.
Jen was actively working as a social worker when she was diagnosed with CML. Unfortunately, her diagnosis required her to step away from her career for a period of time. Working closely with her doctor, she navigated the treatment landscape to find a treatment option that worked for her.
Today, she is a teacher in her rural community, educating K-8 students in a one-room schoolhouse.

For well over a century and a half the people of Indiana have been called Hoosiers. It is one of the oldest of state nicknames and has had a wider acceptance than most. True, there are Buckeyes of Ohio, the Suckers of Illinois and the Tarheels of North Carolina — but none of these has had the popular usage accorded Hoosier.

The only comparable term in American experience is Yankee. And that started out as a synonym for New Englander. In the Civil War era Southerners applied it indiscriminately to all Northerners. In the world wars, many a boy from Dixie doubtless felt a sense of shock when he discovered that in the eyes of our British (Limey) allies that all Americans were Yanks!

But where did Hoosier come from? What is its origin? We know that it came into general usage in the 1830s. John Finley of Richmond wrote a poem, “The Hoosier’s Nest,” which was used as the “Carrier’s Address” of the Indianapolis Journal, Jan. 1, 1833. It was widely copied throughout the country and even abroad. Finley originally wrote Hoosier as “Hoosher.” Apparently the poet felt that it was sufficiently familiar to be understandable to his readers. A few days later, on January 8, 1833, at the Jackson Day dinner at Indianapolis, John W. Davis offered “The Hoosher State of Indiana” as a toast. And in August, former Indiana governor James B. Ray announced that he intended to publish a newspaper, The Hoosier, at Greencastle, Indiana.

A few instances of the earlier written use of Hoosier have been found. The word appears in the “Carrier’s Address” of the Indiana Democrat on January 3, 1832. G. L. Murdock wrote on February 11, 1831, in a letter to General John Tipton, “Our Boat will [be] named the Indiana Hoosier.” In a publication printed in 1860, Recollections . . . of the Wabash Valley, Sandford Cox quotes a diary which he dates July 14, 1827, “There is a Yankee trick for you — done up by a Hoosier.” One can only wonder how long before this Hoosier was used orally.

As soon as our nickname came into general use, speculation began as to its origin. The speculation and argument have gone on ever since. On October 26, 1833, the Indiana Democrat reprinted an article published earlier in the Cincinnati Republican: “The appellation of Hooshier has been used in many of the Western States, for several years, to designate . . . an inhabitant of our sister state of Indiana.” The Ohio editor then reviews three explanations of the nickname and concludes:

Whatever may have been the original acceptation of Hooshier this we know, that the people to whom it is now applied, are amongst the bravest, most intelligent, most enterprising, most magnanimous, and most democratic of the Great West, and should we ever feel disposed to quit the state in which we are now sojourning, our own noble Ohio, it will be to enroll ourselves as adopted citizens in the land of the “Hooshier.”

Among the more popular theories:

When a visitor hailed a pioneer cabin in Indiana or knocked upon its door, the settler would respond, “Who’s yere?” And from this frequent response Indiana became the “Who’s yere” or Hoosier state. No one ever explained why this was more typical of Indiana than of Illinois or Ohio.
That Indiana rivermen were so spectacularly successful in trouncing or “hushing” their adversaries in the brawling that was then common that they became known as “hushers,” and eventually Hoosiers.
There was once a contractor named Hoosier employed on the Louisville and Portland Canal who preferred to hire laborers from Indiana. They were called “Hoosier’s men” and eventually all Indianans were called Hoosiers.
A theory attributed to Gov. Joseph Wright derived Hoosier from an Indian word for corn, “hoosa.” Indiana flatboatmen taking corn or maize to New Orleans came to be known as “hoosa men” or Hoosiers. Unfortunately for this theory, a search of Indian vocabularies by a careful student of linguistics failed to reveal any such word for corn.
Quite as plausible as these was the facetious explanation offered by “The Hoosier Poet,” James Whitcomb Riley. He claimed that Hoosier originated in the pugnacious habits of our early settlers. They were enthusiastic and vicious fighters who gouged, scratched and bit off noses and ears. This was so common an occurrence that a settler coming into a tavern the morning after a fight and seeing an ear on the floor would touch it with his toe and casually ask, “Whose ear?”
The distinguished Hoosier writer, Meredith Nicholson (The Hoosiers) and many others have inquired into the origin of Hoosier. But by all odds the most serious student of the matter was Jacob Piatt Dunn, Jr., Indiana historian and longtime secretary of the Indiana Historical Society. Dunn noted that “hoosier” was frequently used in many parts of the South in the 19th century for woodsmen or rough hill people. He traced the word back to “hoozer,” in the Cumberland dialect of England. This derives from the Anglo-Saxon word “hoo” meaning high or hill. In the Cumberland dialect, the word “hoozer” meant anything unusually large, presumably like a hill. It is not hard to see how this word was attached to a hill dweller or highlander. Immigrants from Cumberland, England, settled in the southern mountains (Cumberland Mountains, Cumberland River, Cumberland Gap, etc.). Their descendents brought the name with them when they settled in the hills of southern Indiana.

As Meredith Nicholson observed: “The origin of the term ‘Hoosier’ is not known with certainty.” But certain it is that . . . Hoosiers bear their nickname proudly. Many generations of Hoosier achievement have endowed the term with connotations that are strong and friendly . . . .

Metro-North Railroad won’t be running trains Thursday while workers deal with flooded stations and rail lines, submerged rail crossings and parking lots under water throughout the Lower Hudson Valley.

“Metro-North is basically out of business today,” MTA chairman and CEO Janno Lieber said during an interview on Fox 5 Good Day New York on Thursday morning.

Subway service in New York City will remain limited while the MTA pumps water from stations flooded by massive amounts of rain delivered by the remnants of Hurricane Ida.

“The storm did a number on all of our infrastructure in the region, mass transit was no exception,” Lieber added.

Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency Thursday morning.

Riders: Metro-North adding more trains to its schedule. Are riders ready to come back?

Fares: After warning of doomsday cuts, Metro-North decides not to raise fares this year

Ferry: Metro-North to resume Haverstraw-Ossining, Newburgh-Beacon ferry service in August

Along the Harlem, Hudson and New Haven lines, rail lines were washed out, parking lots were flooded, and debris was tossed onto tracks. Rail crossings in some areas were under water.

Elsewhere, wooded embankments slipped into nearby waterways, taking rail lines with them. Trees that were uprooted fell onto tracks. And at the Hastings-on-Hudson station, sidewalk leading into the station was crumbled by floodwaters.

Lieber said the flooding overwhelmed the city’s ability to drain water away at higher levels of elevation.

“All those areas that were hit by Superstorm Sandy, the under-river tunnels, they’ve been made much more resilient and impervious to storms,” Lieber said. “But what we’re seeing now is these repetitive flash floods which are at higher ground, and as I said, the street level drainage system gets overwhelmed and then the water gets into the subway in mass quantities.”

In the 60s and 70s, when I was growing up, phosphate in detergents was one of our biggest environmental concerns, because it contaminated the Great Lakes. Rivers in Cleveland or Detroit still caught fire then. It was a simpler time.

Environmental problems seemed relatively contained, manageable. It seemed that by taking phosphate out of detergent and other pollutants out of a few rivers, we could make the Great Lakes great again. I should say “whole” again, because of course the lakes had never stopped being great. They hold almost 85 percent of North America’s fresh surface water and a fifth of the world’s. Their coastline is longer than the East and West coasts combined.

They’re as huge and as seemingly immutable a part of our geography and collective imagination as the Rocky Mountains—but while the Rockies are tens of millions of years old, the lakes were gouged out of bedrock by retreating glaciers only some 10,000 years ago. In their present form, they’re younger than the Egyptian pyramids, Tim Folger writes in this month’s cover story. From the shore, they may look big as oceans, but “they’re immature, more susceptible to threats.”

These days the threats are more global and daunting than in the good old days of burning rivers. They come from climate change, which is warming the lakes, diminishing their winter ice cover, and decimating the tiny plankton at the base of the food web. More than 180 invasive species, like zebra mussels and sea lampreys, have disrupted the food web from top to bottom. (Pictured above, floodwater from Lake Michigan pours over a walkway in Chicago in 2019; extreme weather caused the lake to rise two feet.)

For a while in the 90s, the lakes were blessedly free of the algae blooms that clog them when too many nutrients wash into the water. After the Clean Water Act of 1972, we built sewage treatment plants and removed phosphate from laundry detergent. But in the past two decades the blooms have returned, more toxic than ever, especially in Lake Erie (pictured above, in 2019). Now the phosphorus is washing off over-fertilized corn fields. Sadly, the problem seems to be aggravated by no-till agriculture—an eco-friendly practice designed to prevent soil erosion—as well as by the extreme rains that climate change is bringing.

These days, old industrial cities like Duluth or Buffalo are mentioned as places that might be reborn as havens for climate change refugees from places like Alabama, where I live now. The water in the Great Lakes, Folger tells us, may come to seem a far more valuable asset to this country—as droughts increase—than all our coal, oil, and natural gas. The Great Lakes will never stop being great. But once again it’s time to stop taking them for granted.

Why Moderna may have an edge: The second COVID-19 vaccine candidate with stunning early success rates does not have to be refrigerated at an ultra-cold temperature, as does the Pfizer candidate. Moderna says its vaccine can be stored at 2 to 8 degrees Celsius (36 to 46 degrees Fahrenheit) for 30 days. That’s the temperature found in a normal refrigerator or in a cooler filled with ice. This more common temperature range would allow for easier vaccine storage in rural areas and low-income countries, Sarah Elizabeth Richards reports for Nat Geo. This morning, Pfizer said it would apply for emergency FDA approval after tests showed its vaccine was 95 percent effective and had no serious side effects.
Did these dinos die in combat? A fossil of a tyrannosaur alongside the bones of a plant-eating Triceratops may provide new clues to paleontologists. The exquisitely preserved fossil, found in Montana in 2006, has been acquired by a North Carolina museum after more than a decade of human scuffles related to private ownership and legal disputes. “Each specimen is among the best of its kind ever found,” Nat Geo’s Michael Greshko reports.

Ending a cancer: The lives of five million women could be saved by 2050 if the world joins forces to wipe out cervical cancer. In a first, 194 countries pledged to introduce measures that would see the number of new cases of the disease fall by 40 percent through vaccination, screening, and treatment. “We now have the cost-effective, evidence-based tools to make that dream a reality,” says Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO director-general. Without additional measures against HPV, responsible for 99 percent of cases, deaths could rise to 400,000 a year by 2030, The Telegraph reports.

Fighting a public health threat: The American Medical Association has declared racism a public health threat and has pledged to take action to confront systemic racism, racial injustice, and police brutality. “A proactive approach to prevent, or identify and eliminate, racism is crucial,” the AMA declared, “particularly considering that studies show historically marginalized populations in the U.S. have shorter lifespans, greater physical and mental illness burden, earlier onset and aggressive progression of disease, higher maternal and infant mortality, and less access to health care.” The action comes as the COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately stricken African Americans and Latinos in the U.S.

Jupiter’s moons play peek-a-boo: After darkness tomorrow evening, look for the crescent moon in a triangular formation with the two largest planets in our solar system, Jupiter and Saturn. As an observing challenge, small telescopes pointed at Jupiter after sunset can reveal one of its moons, Callisto, gliding in front of the planet’s disk, while the neighboring moon Ganymede will peek out from behind Jupiter’s shadow on its eastern side at 7:13 p.m. ET. With binoculars, you can also spy two other Jovian moons—icy Europa to the planet’s west and volcanic Io to its east. Meanwhile, early bird sky-watchers will get a chance to see Mercury, which is usually hidden behind the glow of the sunrise or sunset. This week, it has pulled enough away from the sun that it’s more easily visible low in the southeast sky.

Bluer than blue? How can you make vivid pigments that could be even more striking than those found in nature? That’s what scientists are doing by “controlling light”—altering the arrangement of molecules to reflect only a specific wavelength of light. The blue jay (Cyanocitta cristata) is a passerine bird in the family Corvidae, native to North America. It is resident through most of eastern and central United States, although western populations may be migratory. Resident populations are also found in Newfoundland, Canada, while breeding populations can be found in southern Canada. It breeds in both deciduous and coniferous forests, and is common in residential areas. It is predominantly blue with a white chest and underparts, and a blue crest. It has a black, U-shaped collar around its neck and a black border behind the crest. Both sexes are similar in size and plumage, and plumage does not vary throughout the year. Four subspecies of the blue jay have been recognized.

The blue jay mainly feeds on nuts and seeds such as acorns, soft fruits, arthropods, and occasionally small vertebrates. It typically gleans food from trees, shrubs, and the ground, though it sometimes hawks insects from the air. Like squirrels, blue jays are known to hide nuts for later consumption. It builds an open cup nest in the branches of a tree, which both sexes participate in constructing. The clutch can contain two to seven eggs, which are blueish or light brown with brown spots. Young are altricial, and are brooded by the female for 8–12 days after hatching. They may remain with their parents for one to two months.

The bird’s name derives from its noisy, garrulous nature. It is sometimes called a “jaybird”.
