Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS): Hidradenitis suppurativa, or HS, is a condition that causes small, painful lumps to form under the skin, often where skin rubs together, such as the armpits, groin, buttocks, and breasts. The lumps heal slowly, recur, and can lead to tunnels under the skin and scarring. Once considered a rare condition, it is now thought that as many as 1 in 100 people are affected by HS.
o Those living with the condition struggle with more than their ability to feel confident, and it affects things like the ability to put clothes on, sit down, participate in their favorite hobbies, and pursue partnership and intimacy.

Sometimes people must face the toughest opponents in life —and for approximately 30 million Americans with known heart disease, bad cholesterol is a formidable challenger. 1-3

Lowering bad cholesterol and keeping it low takes a solid game plan. With September marking the kick-off of the football season and National Cholesterol Education Month, it’s the perfect time for people to check in with their doctor to make sure they have all the right plays to manage their bad cholesterol.

The most common type of heart disease, called known heart disease, is caused by consistent high levels of bad cholesterol (LDL-C), fats and other substances in the blood, that leads to the buildup of plaque on the walls of the arteries.4 This buildup can lead to major cardiac events, like a heart attack or stroke, and blockages in the arteries causing chest pain.4 That’s why it’s important for people with known heart disease to lower bad cholesterol and keep it low; yet even with what may seem to be the best game plan, only 20 percent of people with known heart disease who take statins to lower their bad cholesterol achieve their recommended cholesterol goal.1

Tactics to defeat a tough opponent need to be constantly assessed and adjusted to help ensure success – and the same is true for managing bad cholesterol. While you can’t control factors like genetics or age, there are still ways you can find success with the right lifestyle modifications and working with your doctor the find the right treatment plan.

ASCVD is a type of heart disease caused by consistent high levels of bad cholesterol (LDL-C) in the blood that leads to the buildup of plaque on the walls of the arteries. The plaque buildup results in problems such as heart attack and stroke. For people with ASCVD, also referred to as “known heart disease,” it’s important to lower bad cholesterol.
At the same time, many ASCVD patients struggle to lower their bad cholesterol, no matter how hard they try. For people with high cholesterol, it can be challenging to follow a strict diet, exercise and medication routine, when faced with the realities of day-to-day life.
And even when taking statins, the most commonly prescribed treatment for lowering cholesterol, up to 80% of patients with ASCVD aren’t meeting their cholesterol target. Furthermore, up to two-thirds of patients stop taking statins within one year of starting treatment.
There have been recent options available in treating the millions of patients with ASCVD who are not getting their cholesterol low enough and keeping it low. Seth J. Baum, MD, cardiologist and Chief Medical Officer of Excel Medical Clinical Trials, will be available to discuss ways to keep your heart healthy and a new available treatment option.

It’s always critical for people with heart failure (HF) to take steps to keep healthy and to try to reduce the risk of hospital visits – but now, as these patients face increased health risks and hospitals are overburdened, it’s more important than ever.

HF is a chronic, progressive condition that can change the structure of the heart so it is unable to pump enough blood to the body. Patients with HF are inherently at increased risk of hospitalization for symptoms like shortness of breath or swelling – often in the legs, ankles, feet and/or abdomen. Hospitalizations for HF are a hallmark of disease progression, or worsening of the condition.

Annually, HF accounts for about 1 million hospitalizations. That’s about 2 HF hospitalizations every minute in the U.S.

A visit to hospital for heart failure can average between five and ten days – further, around one in four patients are re-admitted within 30 days of discharge, and one in ten may not survive.

These recurrent experiences can profoundly disrupt the lives of patients and caregivers.

For people living with heart failure, hospitalizations can be a recurring part of life. But finding the right care plan with a health care provider can help people actively manage their condition to reduce their risk of HF hospitalizations.

Kim, for example, is a patient who used to experience frequent HF hospitalizations before changing her treatment regimen. Looking back, this hardworking single mom was referred to a lung specialist by her primary care physician because of a persistent cough that wouldn’t go away. At just 32 years of age, she was shocked to be diagnosed with chronic heart failure, a condition that would lead her to endure frequent heart failure hospitalizations over the next several years.

Fortunately, Kim was able to work with her health care team on a plan, including a healthy lifestyle and treatment regimen that would help manage this chronic condition. In fact, there are steps HF patients can take to help reduce the risk of a HF hospitalization. These can include following a low-salt diet, getting an appropriate amount of physical activity, and maintaining the treatment regimen advised by their health care provider.

Beth Davidson, a heart failure nurse practitioner in Nashville, TN, and President of the American Association of HF Nurses, will be available to discuss the prevalence of HF, a condition affecting over 6 million people in the U.S., and projected to affect approximately 8 million by 2030. She can discuss the seriousness of HF hospitalizations, HF symptoms, treatment and lifestyle tips that may help patients or a loved one manage the condition. Kim will also share her story and how she is successfully managing her HF today.

Dan Reynolds, lead singer of the multi-platinum, Grammy Award-winning band, Imagine Dragons, has earned legions of fans worldwide with sold-out tours and a string of chart-topping songs including “Radioactive” and “Thunder.”

While the band dominates the charts, Dan has been living with ankylosing spondylitis (AS)—a painful disease that most people probably aren’t familiar with—for more than a decade. Dan was diagnosed with AS in his early 20s, and three of his brothers also have AS.

Dan continues his efforts to make a difference in the lives of others by supporting several causes, including his work as an advocate for the AS community. Recently, Reynolds has been working with Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation to launch Monster Pain in the AS, a national campaign to raise awareness of unexplained back pain that may be AS.

For Dan, unexplained back pain is personal. After years of living with intense and unexplained back pain, Dan finally found the right doctor, a rheumatologist, who helped him find answers and a treatment plan that worked for him. He says this was “the greatest feeling in the world.”

This is why Dan is speaking publicly about his AS, in hopes of encouraging others living with persistent, unexplained back pain to seek diagnosis and care. Some 2.7 million people in the United States are thought to have AS and related conditions.1 But because it’s underdiagnosed, the numbers may be even higher.

Reynolds talks about his journey, the challenges living with unexplained back pain that may be AS, and how to find help. Reynolds will be joined by rheumatologist [Dr. Hillary Norton, who also has AS,] to share the signs and symptoms, her unique perspective on the disease, and the importance of getting a correct diagnosis.

To Tell Her Story About Living With Advanced Breast Cancer

Marcia Strassman is best known for playing the role of the nurturer. From an army nurse in early episodes of the classic TV show M*A*S*H, playing Gabe Kaplans wife in the series Welcome Back Kotter, starring as “Honey” in the Honey I Shrunk the Kids movies, to her own real-life 21-year-old daughter, Lizzie. Now, at age 60 and living with Stage IV breast cancer (Stage IV means that the cancer has already spread to another part of the body, including the bones), Strassman is taking on possibly her most important nurturing role yet, but this time to a new audience breast cancer patients.
Strassman, who was diagnosed in March 2007 with advanced breast cancer, has seen first-hand the importance of working closely with a medical team to properly manage her cancer and the complications that can result from the illness. Surprised by the discovery that many cancer patients do not adhere to their treatment regimens outlined by their oncology team, Strassman, who is vigilant about taking her treatments, is embarking on a multi-city tour over the next year to tell her story to patients nationwide and encourage them to follow their prescribed treatment regimen carefully.
The month of October marks National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Strassman will be available via satellite on Wednesday, October 22nd to share her story about her recent diagnosis of Stage IV breast cancer; discuss the steps she is taking to treat her cancer; and tell why she has decided to share her story with others.
Facts About Strassman And Her Diagnosis:
Not only did Strassman leave her doctors office with a diagnosis of breast cancer in March 2007, following initial surgery at St. Johns Hospital in Los Angeles, she was told that her cancer had spread to the bone.
In breast cancer‚ metastasis or complications to the bone occurs in 65-75% of patients; bone metastases wear away portions of the bones, leaving them weak and fragile.
Doctors immediately put Strassman on treatments to both manage the cancer as well as help stabilize her bones. Since her diagnosis, Strassman remains committed to adhering to her treatment regimen to care for her bones. And today, her most recent scans show the damage to her bones remains unchanged.
Today, Strassman continues to enjoy the same active lifestyle as before she received her diagnosis, which includes working, spending time with family and friends and hiking with her dog.
