SPECIAL OLYMPICS NEW YORK UNIFIED PAIR AND COACH TO COMPETE IN THE 2024 MLS UNIFIED ALL-STAR GAME IN COLUMBUS, OHIO

Manhattan, NY – Athlete Thierno Diop, partner Emmanuel Rios Jr, and Coach Oscar Vicente, all from New York City, are about to compete in the event of a lifetime. Tomorrow, Tuesday, July 23 at 3:30 pm ET, they’ll join the 2024 Special Olympics Unified All-Star Game at Historic Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio.

This event is an 11 vs. 11 competitive soccer match between players representing Special Olympics programs from all over the country. As with all Unified Sports competitions, these teams have athletes both with and without disabilities. Authentic uniforms are to be provided by Adidas, and both team’s coaches will be MLS legends.

“Our Unified pair being recognized at this level for their commitment and hard work means the world to them,” said Oscar Vicente, coach for this event and for the 721M City Hawks. “Thierno and Emmanuel are honored to represent Special Olympics New York, and they are ready to show the world what they can do.”

Manhattan, NY – The first-ever Special Olympics New York regional floorball tournament will be held at Javits Center in New York City Saturday. More than 500 athletes and coaches from New York City, Long Island, Hudson Valley and the Southern Tier will compete.

Special Olympics New York President & CEO Stacey Hengsterman and NYC Public Schools Chancellor David C. Banks will kick off the event during Opening Ceremonies, beginning promptly at 9:30 a.m.

The event is OPEN PRESS and will be held as follows:

• Date: Saturday, Dec. 2
• Time: 9:30 a.m. Opening Ceremonies; followed by competition until approximately 4 p.m.
• Location: Jacob K. Javits Center (429 11th Avenue, New York, NY 10001)

The event will also include a Young Athletes program and free health screenings for athletes in five disciplines. More than 150 volunteers will support the event.

Special Olympics New York made the transition from floor hockey to floorball this winter, and Saturday’s tournament will be the first multi-region opportunity for athletes to go for the gold. Learn more about the transition here.

There has been ongoing debate over the issue of immigration and refugees for many months here in the U.S. and around the world.

And in June, there is a day dedicated to refugees — to raise awareness to their needs and plight, realizing the horrors they have endured in leaving their homeland to find a safe place to live. It’s a time to try to work together to ensure every refugee child gets an education, every family has a safe place to call home and every refugee can work or learn new skills to make a positive contribution to their community.

And now, thousands of refugees are also united by one flag. An orange and black flag inspired by the life vests most all had to wear in their search for a safer land to live. It’s been designed and made by a Syrian refugee and artist who currently lives in Amsterdam.

The idea for the flag began by a group known as the The Refugee Nation, after the first ever Olympic team made up of refugees competed in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. While the flag has not yet been sanctioned by the International Olympic Committee, The Refugee Nation wants to give those from foreign nations a symbol of unity and identity that they can call their own.

Right now, refugees are asking for the public’s support in their efforts to resettle. Everyone can help by buying and displaying this special flag and help the refugees adjust to their new surroundings in the U.S.

Usain St. Leo Bolt, OJ, CD (/ˈjuːseɪn/; born 21 August 1986), is a Jamaican sprinter. Regarded as the fastest person ever timed, he is the first man to hold both the 100 metres and 200 metres world records since fully automatic time became mandatory. He also holds the world record in the 4 × 100 metres relay. He is the reigning World and Olympic champion in these three events.

Bolt gained worldwide popularity for his double sprint victory at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in world record times. He later became the first man at the Olympic Games to win six gold medals for sprinting. He was the first to win consecutive Olympic 100 m and 200 m titles (2008 and 2012). At the 2016 Summer Olympics he became the first track athlete in Olympic history to win three gold medals in one discipline, with his win in the 100 m sprint.

An eleven-time World Champion, he won consecutive World Championship 100 m, 200 m and 4 × 100 metres relay gold medals from 2009 to 2015, with the exception of a 100 m false start in 2011. He is the most successful athlete of the World Championships and was the first athlete to win three titles in both the 100 m and 200 m at the competition.

Bolt improved upon his first 100 m world record of 9.69 with 9.58 seconds in 2009 – the biggest improvement since the start of electronic timing. He has twice broken the 200 metres world record, setting 19.30 in 2008 and 19.19 in 2009. He has helped Jamaica to three 4 × 100 metres relay world records, with the current record being 36.84 seconds set in 2012. Bolt’s most successful event is the 200 m, with two Olympic and four World titles. The 2008 Olympics was his international debut over 100 m; he had earlier won numerous 200 m medals (including 2007 World Championship silver) and holds the world under-20 and world under-18 records for the event.

His achievements in sprinting have earned him the media nickname “Lightning Bolt”, and his awards include the IAAF World Athlete of the Year, Track & Field Athlete of the Year, and Laureus World Sportsman of the Year (three times). He is the highest paid athlete ever in track and field. Bolt has stated that he intends to retire from athletics after the 2017 World Championships.

Michael Fred Phelps II (born June 30, 1985) is an American swimmer and the most decorated Olympian of all time with 19 medals. Phelps also holds the all-time records for gold medals (15) and gold medals in individual events (9). In winning eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Games, Phelps took the record for the most first-place finishes at any single Olympic Games. Five of those victories were in individual events, tying the single Games record. In the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Phelps has won two silver medals and one gold through July 31.

Phelps is the long course world recordholder in the 100 metres butterfly, 200 metres butterfly and 400 metres individual medley as well as the former long course world recordholder in the 200 metres freestyle and 200 metres individual medley. He has won a total of sixty-six medals in major international competition, fifty-four gold, nine silver, and three bronze spanning the Olympics, the World, and the Pan Pacific Championships. Phelps’s international titles and record-breaking performances have earned him the World Swimmer of the Year Award six times and American Swimmer of the Year Award eight times. His unprecedented Olympic success in 2008 earned Phelps Sports Illustrated magazine’s Sportsman of the Year award. The same magazine said that he is “universally recognized as the greatest swimmer in history”.

After the 2008 Summer Olympics, Phelps started the Michael Phelps Foundation, which focuses on growing the sport of swimming and promoting healthier lifestyles. He expects to do further work with his foundation after the 2012 Olympics, which he has said will be his last.

Nearly twenty years ago, Summer Sanders made swimming history at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, winning four medals, including two gold. Since then, she has launched a career in sports and entertainment broadcasting, and will be commentating for NBC and Yahoo! Sports for the Olympics this year in London. She attributes all of her success both in and out of the pool to the inspiration of her husband and two young children, ages 7 and 4.

To celebrate Mother’s Day, Summer Sanders can talk to you on how to raise a future Olympian – the topic of a book she wrote.

Casey Tibbs faced a life-changing event when a motorcycle accident forced him to amputate his right leg. Tibbs was a multi-sport athlete growing up, so instead of letting this disability discourage him, he found rewarding competition in the Paralympic Games.

In 2004, Tibbs became the first American active-duty military member to compete in a Paralympic Games, and is now a two-time gold medalist in the men’s 4 x 100-meter relay.

Now Tibbs has set his sights on the 2012 Olympics and partnership with Kellogg’s Olympic campaign. Tibbs follows his nutrition closely and believes that breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

Tibbs was a multi-sport athlete growing up, and when he lost his right leg below the knee as the result of a motorcycle accident, he saw no reason to stop competing and went on to win multiple Paralympic medals, including two golds. As a Chief Petty Officer in the Navy training to qualify for his third Paralympic Games, Tibbs and wife Robyn together focus on raising their three children, a 4-year-old son, Taylor, an 18-month-old daughter, Reagan and a 2-month old son, Trent.
