If ever there was an industry, emblematic of an ethos of creativity, it is Hollywood. From the indie brilliance and idiosyncrasy of “Being John Malkovich” to the blockbuster genius and visualization of “Oppenheimer,” brilliant minds and expression unleashed is the core ideal of the industry. And today, a new technology has arrived that may unleash another layer of creative invention, Artificial Intelligence. While some may fear its arrival and implications, others are experimenting and discovering that the most creative among us are able to harness AI as a “Mental Collaborator,” perhaps a McLuhan or Leary-like accelerator to reach beyond a heretofore unavailable creative boundary. Even with the successful resolution of the Entertainment industry “Guilds” strike of 2023, there remains an ongoing fear that “artificial intelligence poses an existential threat to creative professions.” The core AI issue sparking debate in Hollywood is not only based on compensation, data training and ownership but the creative control of the ultimate production itself. Additionally, “Deep Fake” technology has raised concern about potential harmful uses, such as political disinformation, revenge porn, and misuse of intellectual property. At the same time, many “creatives” tout the game changing benefits and innovation this technology can bring to artistic and other endeavors, such as educational opportunities, enhanced freedom of expression and reduced barriers to entry. This panel will discuss these competing concerns and whether existing legal frameworks, such as right of publicity, copyright, and existing regulations, are sufficient to address this powerful technology.

Our first thought was to call this panel, “AI: Inside the Black Box of the Imagination.” Artificial Intelligence, together with Machine Learning have opened the door to a relationship with a “Human Creator,” someone we might call an “Artist,” and the result is an exploration of the imagination that has never been seen before. The result is unique. Nevertheless, some critics, Jerry Saltz of New York Magazine’s Vulture among them, have articulated a clear disdain for this new and evolving art form. While others, the curators at MOMA in NYC to their credit, have honored AI’s best known artistic innovator, Rafik Anadol with a one-man show. Many have referred to AI Art as the “Design of Randomness,” referring to it’s kinship to Jackson Pollock. In this session we will explore some of those thoughts.

David Burke (born February 27, 1962) is an American chef and restaurateur, known for his appearance on the reality TV program Iron Chef America.

Born in Brooklyn NY and raised in Hazlet, New Jersey, Burke is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and was a student at Culinary Institute Lenôtre in Plaisir, France. Burke has worked with chefs in France and New York such as Pierre Troisgros, George Blanc, Marc Meneau, Daniel Boulud, Charlie Palmer and Waldy Malouf. When Burke was 26, he received 3 stars from the New York Times at River Café. Burke was then chosen by his peers to represent the US at The International Culinary Competition, where he won France’s Meilleurs Ouvriers de France Diplome d’Honneur. Burke also won the Nippon Award for Excellence from the government of Japan, for overall skill and technique. Burke remained at The River Café until 1992.

Career

In 1992, Burke opened the Park Avenue Café with Smith & Wollensky CEO Alan Stillman, becoming vice president of culinary development for the Smith & Wollensky Restaurant Group four years later. In 2003, Burke branched out on his own to start his first proprietary restaurant, davidburke & donatella. Since then, he has set up establishments in Chicago, Foxwoods Casino (CT), Las Vegas and in Rumson, NJ, as well as New York City.

As the principal of David Burke Hospitality Management, he operates or oversees the culinary direction of 20 restaurants in New York, New Jersey, North Carolina, and in Saudi Arabia. In May 2022 Burke purchased the Dixie Lee Bakery in Keansburg, NJ.

Burke has appeared on television, including two seasons of Top Chef Masters, a guest spot on the Every Day with Rachael Ray show, NBC’s TODAY Show and Bloomberg’s small-business television series “The Mentor”. He has published two cookbooks, Cooking With David Burke (1999) and David Burke’s New American Classics (2006) co-written by Judith Choate.

Burke was featured once during the second season of Iron Chef America in 2005, he lost to Bobby Flay. In 2010, he was a competitor on the second season of Top Chef Masters, but did not move on to the Champions’ Rounds.

Burke also competed on Top Chef Masters Season 5. He was eliminated on Episode 9 in the Teacher Tribute challenge with his Bittersweet Chocolate Soufflé with Orange Peel & Raspberry Sauce.

At the BLT Prime in the Trump International Hotel Washington, D.C., Burke has cooked steak for President Donald Trump, and disputed allegations that the President ate his steak with ketchup. He was rumored to be under consideration for the post of White House Executive Chef, but has said that he would likely not be interested in the position.

2022 is the Year of the Water Tiger. The tiger is known as the king of all beasts in China and is associated with bravery, confidence and strength. Also known to be strong-willed, opinionated and stubborn, the tiger years are 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010, 2022, 2034.

The water tiger — the animal being ushered in with this Lunar New Year — is less aggressive and more open-minded than the typical tiger, according to Chinese astrology. … According to superstition, a person born in a particular year takes on the traits of that year’s animal.

CHINESE culture suggests that the Tiger is the guardian of children. Chinese infants and toddlers wear shoes with tigers on them to protect them against evil spirits.

The Tiger is the third of the 12-year cycle of animals which appear in the Chinese zodiac related to the Chinese calendar

In 2010, for the first time since the Soviets, Afghanistan allowed women to join the armed forces, and Niloofar entered Afghanistan’s military academy.
Niloofar had to break through social barriers to demonstrate confidence, leadership, and decisiveness—essential qualities for a combat pilot. Niloofar performed the first solo flight of her class—ahead of all her male classmates—and in 2013 became Afghanistan’s first female fixed-wing air force pilot.
The US State Department honored Niloofar with the International Women of Courage Award and brought her to the United States to meet Michelle Obama and fly with the US Navy’s Blue Angels. But when she returned to Kabul, the danger to her and her family had increased significantly.
Rahmani and her family are portraits of the resiliency of refugees and the accomplishments they can reach when afforded opportunities.

About the Authors:
Niloofar Rahmani became the first female fixed-wing pilot for the Afghan Air Force in 2012. She speaks three languages and has been interviewed for the Wall Street Journal, Japan Times, and The Independent as well as CNN and PBS. In 2015 the US State Department presented Rahmani with the International Women of Courage Award. She lives in the southeastern United States.

Adam Sikes, who writes under the pen name R.D. Sykes, was born in northern California but grew up in Massachusetts and Illinois. He attended Georgetown University, earning a BS in International Affairs and then a Masters in History. Adam spent the first ten years of his professional career in the US Marine Corps in infantry and reconnaissance units, serving numerous combat tours of duty in Bosnia, Iraq, and elsewhere in the Middle East. He was decorated for valor on multiple occasions and is the recipient of the Silver Star. Adam also served in Moscow, Russia, and various assignments in Western Europe. Adam was then approached and recruited to work at the CIA as a paramilitary officer in the Directorate of Operations. During his tenure at the CIA, Adam conducted intelligence operations in Central Asia, East Africa, and Europe. He was also involved in sensitive counterintelligence investigations, working with US law enforcement. After twenty-five years of service in the national security arena living and working around the world, Adam is now considering a move, not only from his home base in Virginia but into a new career as well.

Registration is Now Open for the 13th Annual Montauk Swim Challenge!

This year’s Montauk Swim Challenge will be held as a virtual online event via the Elite Feats athletic event platform. Participants will seek personal sponsors for their swim, swim their chosen distance (1/2 mile, 1 mile, 5K), and log their results online. Swimmers will choose their own safe location to complete their swim (pool, ocean, bay, lake).

We invite the entire community to participate—this is an especially fun summer activity for kids and families!

Proceeds from the Montauk Ocean Swim Challenge will benefit construction of the future Aquatic and Cultural Arts Centers at the Montauk Playhouse Community Center.

Registration fee: $40. After registering, participants will receive an email with confirmation/race instructions as well as an email from GroupRev with instructions to set up an online sponsorship and fundraising page.
