Amidst the bustle of Armory Arts Week, THE(UN)FAIR rekindles the guerila-style art show; a carefully curated exhibit made possible by the cooperation and collaboration of cutting-edge artists, supportive space owners, keen-eyed curators & many supportive sponsors.

In contrast to the maze of cookie-cutter, white-booth art fairs, THE(UN)FAIR lets participants take a breather from the fair frenzy to have the most memorable, fun art experience of this art-filled week. Last year’s innovative installations, performance art, original artwork & participatory pieces brought raves literally from around the world-2014 will be bigger and better. 1000’s will discover & explore a cohesive, experiential indoor and outdoor environment curated by Jennifer Wallace helming  nAscent Art (a great resource linking artists & collectors) & HK: ArtiST Festival alumni who graciously opened her home & private art works) + Mikel Glass.

The curatorial theme for 2014 is “Exploring the Divide”. Mindful of the current climate of political and social polarization, THE(UN)FAIR will pull together art and people with disparate views to create an environment to consider what connects & divides us.  Additional inspiration stems from our location. Manhattan’s West 52nd Street is a neighborhood in transition, one block away from one of the most expensive luxury residential developments in the world, yet around the corner from a non-profit helping residents of affordable housing. Leaving The Armory Show at Pier 92, thousands stream down West 52nd Street to find the best surprise of their arts week.

Friday 6 PM- Midnight attend free opening with RSVP: the Museum of Russian Art and the Kolodzei Art Foundation present Russian Pavilion! Join us for the OPENING RECEPTION of Transcending Boundaries… New Images by Tashi Norbu – Friday, March 14, 6-8PM. Tashi Norbu explores the imagery of modern Tibet, referencing the Buddhist notions of flux & change, interdependence, and absence. Educated as a traditional tangka painter and later in contemporary art, Tashi juxtaposes the contemplative aesthetics of his art & calligraphy with the energy of abstract expressionism & pop culture.

He constantly seeks to explore the ways of western art that inspire him, in combination with Tibetan motifs and patterns. He aims to bring the energy of abstract expressionism in harmony with the meditative and reflective spirit of Buddhism.  Using the unicorn as a metaphor for transformation, he sees change as an instrument for liberation: “Apart from being ruthless, change gives hope to us Tibetans.  We have to grow out of our present situation, as the lotus grows out of the mud, by accepting change, nourishing the Buddha nature of ourselves in the modern world, & revealing our faults fearlessly. If we grow within ourselves, we gain freedom.”
