What’s Driving the News: The 2024 back to school season is starting off HOT, and it doesn’t seem to be cooling down any time soon. As students excitedly return to the classroom, schools must balance maintaining a comfortable learning environment in the face of extended warm seasons.

Why This Matters: The nation’s schools annually emit as much carbon as 18 coal plants or 8 million homes, according to an analysis of U.S. Department of Energy data by the advocacy group Generation180. But K-12 schools and district leaders across the country are in the unique position to equip students with the knowledge and preparation for a future shaped by climate change. In addition, they have considerable carbon reduction possibilities being major building owners, transportation managers, and employers. Leveraging the power of schools and their district leaders would simultaneously have significant carbon reductions as well as introduce low carbon alternatives as a norm for students.

Community solar is a great way for schools to achieve their sustainability goals while also significantly reducing their energy costs. According to Generation180, the amount of solar installed at K-12 schools in the United States has tripled since 2015. Today, over 6 million students attend a solar-powered school, and it is not hard to see why so many school administrators are turning to solar. At the university level, it also creates unique educational opportunities to prepare college students for well-paying jobs in a fast-growing industry, such as learning how to install solar panels. Pivot Energy is currently working with the University of Colorado Boulder and the University of Denver (DU) to offset the schools’ electricity consumption with on-campus and off-site net metering solar projects. At DU, the off-site projects will be used for student learning opportunities to advance the clean energy workforce. Mat Elmore, SVP Strategic Accounts at Pivot Energy, can discuss the growing role schools and workforce development have in the clean energy transition.

A Gala Event was held at Terrace in the Park, Flushing Meadow Park on November 10, by the 10 Billion Asseted America Hotel Owners Charitable
Association.

The Association has assets of more than 10 billion dollars in assets has expanded its influence by adding real estate, banking and finance, building decorations, catering and other industries to form five major sectors along with the hotel industry. It is building the most influential business platform in New York with complementary industries, mutual assistance for members, building a stronger platform, enhancing the status of members, and increasing the influence of the chamber of commerce. We welcome all successful entrepreneurs with integrity and strength to join the Chamber of Commerce and serve as board members.

The event had a special broadcast for a new TV/Podcast Chinese American Program. Good News Host Reverend Paul Sladkus interviewed many of the attendees and Board Members. Paul was working with Weiwei Gao, who is a leader in the Chinese media with over 300 million followers for Weiwei Talks. Weiwei is loved by many. This prestigious event is Weiwei and Paul’s and Weiwei’s is FIRST Chinese American Broadcast. The Series has been created to share with the world more understanding between China and America. During the COVID-19 pandemic, there’s been an uptick in the number of people working from home and across the U.S. adopting pets from animal shelters, and many others are also signing up to be temporary pet foster parents. Recent statistics show pet adoptions are up 100% from last year.

Pets can be a great, healthy addition to a family. Reports show that 78% of pet owners say their pets have improved their quality of life during this current social distancing period. • Ticks: they are found in many of the places your dog likes to go, such as tall grass, trails and leaves and can transmit serious diseases.
• Mosquitos: a single bite from an infective mosquito can transmit heartworm disease.
• Contaminated Soil: hookworms and roundworms can live in a dog’s intestines and can be passed on to you.

The NFL’s has made a concerted effort to encourage female fans and improve the league’s image in recent years. That’s why the new SHE’S NEXT, Empowered by Visa is announcing a new global initiative in Atlanta to help women entrepreneurs. It’s hoped that having this important event in Atlanta it will draw more attention to challenges facing women entrepreneurs.

Even with this success, a new survey by Visa shows nearly three-quarters of women (73%) report it was difficult to obtain the funding they needed to start their own business. In fact, six in ten (61%) self-fund their business. That’s why the new SHE’S NEXT, Empowered by Visa program is announcing a new global initiative to help women entrepreneurs. A national study, conducted by Frank N. Magid Associates, will be released at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas starting January 4. The study clearly shows that VR has the attention of a large part of the American public. A majority of consumers (56%) who play any type of game (70% of the U.S.), aged 8-64, have heard of virtual reality.

While many companies are coming out with VR devices, some are better known than others. Among those VR devices, American gamers are aware the Oculus Rift at 25%, Samsung VR Gear at 21%, PlayStation VR at 20%, and Google Cardboard at 17%.

A quarter (24%) of the gamer respondents in this survey said they were “very interested” in “Virtual Reality Experience in the home.” A similarly sized group at 23% said they were “interested” in VR. So 47% of the respondents are very interested or interested in VR . This is a large population of Americans with strong positive interest in VR.

Among those interested in VR the number one type of content desired in VR was movies and TV (66%), followed by console/PC gaming (59%), music videos (41%), travel (39%), and sports (38%). When Facebook bought Oculus it was suggested VR would become a new platform for social networking. Many Americans (34%) interested in VR believe that social networking will be an important application for VR.

Mike Vorhaus, President of Magid Advisors, who released the data at the Consumer Electronics Show said, “In these super early days of Virtual Reality, it is certain that many American consumers are primed to try this new technology/media platform. I was impressed by the strong interest shown by consumers in not just gaming, but also many mainstream content areas.”

Magid Media Futures is a nationally representative online survey of 2,400 consumers ages 8-64. The sample is matched to the US Census. The study evaluates media attitudes and behaviors of consumers as it relates to devices, video, TV, gaming, social networking and more. The data was collected from July 30 – August 5, 2015.
