And while the “selfie” has become ubiquitous, the art of portrait photography is as old as the medium itself. Bill Rabinovitch is sole curator of the 2014 Whitney Counterweight, selected entirely from work posted by artists to Facebook, which he’s been continuously inspired by. He feels this makes the 2014 Counterweight contemporary with our times, and consistent with how artists now present work. The Counterweight began in the 1970’s when Clement Greenberg challenged Rabinovitch to come up with a response to the Whitney Biennial, and Rabinovitch, along with Vernita N’Cognita, and Barnaby Ruhe, organized the first Counterweight in the tradition of the Salon des Refuses.

Rabinovitch declares, It’s time for artists to regain the territory relinquished to the system — where they’ve mostly become mere replaceable cogs producing indifferent art for market. A primary issue will be the issue of quality over quantity & what that means in terms of new thinking, feeling & drive in moving things forward toward a more meaningful art world capable of creating positive change.  Work from the Counterweight will be shown, artists will speak. Was great to see some of you out last weekend at the 4thU VDay benefit event for the three local charities helping support women and girls affected by violence and trafficking. They are taking donations until April 30th if you were not able to get out and would still like to contribute.

This project has taken 2 years to complete! I began with just a whim perhaps doing a scene from Shakespeare then, it turned into possibly partnering with a few people. Turned out, I went it alone (with some help from my husband) and went full force with the idea engaging 19 actors (including myself) both new talent and seasoned professionals. Before we filmed, I held rehearsals for 2 months. During this time I had to make multiple cast replacements. So some of the cast experienced a nice hefty rehearsal period while others had very little time to prepare. I also made all the colorful costumes during this time, organized union production contracts, locations & all the other facets that go into producing a shoe-string budget indie feature length film. I also have a blog I began on the website which covers a lot of info but had to discontinue it because of time. I would say that all in all I have been very lucky to have created this project as well as I did and now have a film that is complete!

Nothing can be done without help! I am a person who has been pursuing the volatile field of the creative arts since I was a pre-teen. I have experienced many of the stereotypical ups and downs that this field has to offer and still have not given up on this mostly fruitless path to date (but that just may change soon with this project!). Here is one of my favorite quotes from Quintin Crisp (and one of my favorite quotes in general) which pretty much sums up my take on why I am still working at something that will one day perhaps offer me financial reward: “It’s no good running a pig farm badly for 30 years while saying, ‘Really, I was meant to be a ballet dancer.’ By then, pigs will be your style. ” Well, you see, I am the ballet dancer who has been at it for a few decades, and this is my “nutcracker”! Why do I need support for a project that is completed?  Because the project needs visibility…to take everyone to the next level! Even if it is $1 or forwarding this email, that little bit helps! This project offers entertainment, education & proves a film can be made by a person (me) w/a comprehensive skill set & …determination!

Again, for $10 you will get a downloadable copy of the film. Every penny of your contribution will go towards our production…no middlemen – as opposed to all of the crowdfunding sites that take a percentage)! There will still be financial outputs necessary for festival entries and file transferring services; to name a few of the post-production expenses.

How many e-mails do you get in a day? 100? 200? 1,000? I know that it can certainly feel like that. What’s worse is that there’s no way to stop the perpetual onslaught of messages. Each time a new message pops up in your inbox, it’s incredibly distracting and threatens to derail your entire workflow (see Tim’s recent post about time management). The idea that we should be in control of our e-mail and not the other way around is a central tenet of Inbox Zero philosophy. Basically the idea is that unless your job is to deal with emergency-level messages constantly, you’re probably going to be more effective and productive dealing with e-mails in short chunks of time.
If you’re using G-mail, Inbox Pause helps you do just that by acting like a spigot for your incoming e-mails. After installing the app, Inbox Pause adds a pause button in your Gmail dashboard. When you click that button, new messages will stop arriving in your Inbox. They’ll be held in a special label until you are ready for them. If you choose, Inbox Pause can notify the people who e-mail you to let them know that their message will not be delivered to your inbox until a certain time. When you unpause your inbox, all of the messages that you received during the break will be moved into your Inbox, and new messages will arrive as before.
This is a great way to give yourself some breathing space to actually focus on what’s important, and not get bogged down in putting out fires, that aren’t actually that important. Inbox Pause also allows you to set up regular email intervals, so that your emails will be delivered to your inbox en masse at the times you’ve set. You could configure it so that you can set up an hour or two each day that’s dedicated just to responding to e-mails, freeing up the rest of your day to work undisturbed.
And the kicker: How much does it cost? It’s free.
