Dr. Karsh earned his MD from The Chicago Medical School. He completed his General Surgical training at The University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and his Urology Residency at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Karsh was a co-founder of The Urology Center of Colorado which was recently acquired by Advent Health Urology Denver where he serves as an attending Urologist and Director of Research. He is a certified principal investigator with an experience of more than 275 clinical trials. Dr. Karsh has authored a number of peer-reviewed publications and serves on the editorial boards for “Bladder Cancer.” He is an active member of the AUA, , ASCO, BCAN, SUO,SWOG and the Denver Academy of Surgeons. A NEW WAY TO MANAGE TYPE 2 DIABETES THAT ELIMINATES INSULIN INJECTIONS FOR MILLIONS OF AMERICANS
Diabetes management has taken a significant step forward following FDA clearance of the Omnipod 5 Automated Insulin Delivery (AID) System, for adults 18+ living with type 2 diabetes, making it the first and only AID system cleared for the treatment of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Over 30 million Americans live with type 2 diabetes in the United States, with approximately 6 million people who require insulin, of which 2.5 million are using multiple daily injections (MDI). Despite advances in medical therapy over the past 20 years, there has been no significant change in the percentage of adults with type 2 diabetes achieving recommended HbA1c targets.

This clearance is a FIRST in type 2 diabetes management as it:

“The Adventure Jar: A Story of Magic for Families Living with Metastatic Breast Cancer” is intended for children ages three to eight. The book follows the story of a family affected by metastatic breast cancer as they discover that even through the challenges of their mom’s diagnosis – involving inevitable change, uncertainty and disappointment – there is magic to be found in time shared together.​

Family life can be upended when a parent has cancer, and it can be difficult for parents to bear witness to the impact it can have on young children – creating a crucial need for resources to help navigate the challenging emotions that follow.

The Adventure Jar, led by Gilead Sciences, was created in collaboration with eight diverse members of the metastatic breast cancer (MBC) community and professionals, including a psychiatrist, to help families impacted by MBC.​

Among these collaborators is Gilead Patient Ambassador Lauren Huffmaster. She was diagnosed with MBC at 37 years old and struggled with the emotional impact cancer had on her husband and three young daughters, who were two, four and six at the time. Nearly a decade since her diagnosis, MBC continues to shape the lives of her daughters, but they’ve made it a habit to redefine their circumstances.

Designed to empower people with multiple myeloma (MM), MM Told True highlights the stories of those with the disease, bringing them to the forefront through spoken or visual art. In her thought-provoking poem, Jae tells the story of Oya – a committed father, podcaster, aspiring musician and advocate for health equity in the Black community – who was diagnosed with MM in 2017, despite difficulty having his concerns taken seriously.

Since his diagnosis, Oya has become an outspoken member of the MM community, with the hope that others will reach a quicker diagnosis and feel supported through treatment.

MM is a currently incurable cancer of plasma cells in the bone marrow with over 34,000 new cases estimated to be diagnosed in 2023. Even with treatment, the disease tends to relapse – meaning symptoms come back after temporarily improving – or progress.

Patients report feeling like they’re inside a maze, as promising treatment paths repeatedly hit a wall. MM disproportionately impacts ethnic and racial minority groups in incidence, onset and outcome, with Black patients twice as likely to die from the disease compared with white patients.

MM Told True not only illustrates patient stories, but also provides tools and information about MM – so people living with the disease can feel educated and empowered against this relentless blood cancer.

The next phase of the campaign involves encouraging others affected by MM to share their unique stories on MMToldTrue.com, whether it comes in the form of a personal photo, a powerful message or something else that expresses how they feel. These lived experiences can serve as inspiration for people with MM and their care partners.

On March 2, Oya and Jae will be available to discuss how they came together to create meaningful art from Oya’s story, his experience living with MM, and how others can share their own stories and find support through the MM Told True website.

Marshmallow Theory

A teacher gave a beautiful toffee to all the children of the class and then said a strange thing!

“Listen, children! All of you are not to eat your toffee for ten minutes” and saying that he walked out of the class room.

There was silence in the classroom for a few moments, every child was looking at the toffee in front of them and it was difficult to stop them with each passing moment. Ten minutes are over and the teacher enters the class room.

Reviewed, there were seven children in the whole class  whose toffees were untouched, while all the other children were eating toffee and commenting on its color and taste. The teacher secretly recorded the names of these seven children in his diary and began to read after noting. The name of this teacher was Professor Walter Torch.

After a few years, Professor Walter opened his own diary and removed the names of seven children and started researching them. After a long struggle, he came to know that the seven children have achieved many successes in their lives and are the most successful among their own field people.

Professor Walter also reviewed the rest of his class of students and it was found that most of them were leading a normal life, while there were some who were faced with strict economic and social conditions.

All this effort and research resulted in one sentence by Professor Walter and that was it.

This research gained worldwide prominence and was named “Marshmallow Theory” because the toffee that Professor Walter gave the children was named “Marshmallow”. It was soft like foam.

According to this theory, one of the most successful people in the world are found with special quality of ‘patience’, because this quality increases the strength of the human being, due to which the man is not disappointed in difficult situations and he becomes an extraordinary personality.

CKD is a progressive condition and patients with CKD have an increased risk of having heart disease.[1][3] However, most patients don’t know they have CKD, in large part because it is a “silent” disease, with most patients feeling no symptoms until the disease has progressed.[4] In fact, while approximately 15% of US adults are living with CKD, 9 in 10 are unaware they have CKD.[1]

Now, a new treatment option has been proven to help slow the progression of CKD – a huge scientific innovation for CKD patients at risk of progression with and without T2D. This approval is the most significant advancement in the treatment of CKD in over 20 years.

Because CKD may be overlooked until symptoms appear at advanced stages, it is especially important to be aware of risk factors and the serious complications that can occur.[1][5]

CKD tends to get worse over time, so the earlier treatment starts, the better the patient outcomes are. [3]

On May 19, Neil Skolnik, M.D., Professor of Family and Community Medicine, Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, will be available to discuss the latest treatment option approved by the FDA. Dr. Skolnik will also discuss risk factors and the importance of early detection of CKD.
