Do you struggle with eyelid redness, crusties, missing lashes, itching or eyelid inflammation? If yes – you may be one of the millions of Americans living with a common but often misdiagnosed eyelid disease called Demodex blepharitis (DB)!

Demodex blepharitis is an eyelid disease caused by an infestation of microscopic mites.1 When these mites overpopulate, they can cause discomfort and irritation. In fact, 50% of patients with Demodex blepharitis reported their eyes itched frequently or all the time.2 It’s estimated that approximately 25 million eye care patients in the U.S. are affected by this disease1 — that’s 1 out of every 12 adults!

Don’t like the idea of tiny critters living on your eyelids? The diagnosis is easy and can be confirmed through a routine eye exam with an optometrist or ophthalmologist. When left untreated, Demodex blepharitis can leave you more prone to other eye-related diseases. 3

Fortunately, there are treatment options available to help target and kill mites.

Join leading optometrist, Cory Lappin who can discuss the importance of eye health, including how an eye exam can reveal common eyelid diseases like Demodex blepharitis and shed light on other serious health problems.

Liver cancer is the sixth most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide and third-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States.1,2 Hepatocellular carcinoma, or HCC, is the most common type of liver cancer, yet more than half of patients are diagnosed at advanced stages of the disease often when symptoms first begin to appear.3,4 Historically, the prognosis for advanced HCC has been poor, with only 7% of patients surviving up to five years after diagnosis.4

http://imfinzi.com/

But today, there is reason for optimism. Advances in research and medical innovation are signaling a shift in patient expectations, offering hope for more time for patients navigating their unresectable HCC or uHCC diagnosis. Here to explain the progress being made in the treatment landscape is Dr Shroff [shrawf] with the University of Arizona Cancer Center.

BIO:
Rachna T. Shroff, MD, MS, FASCO, is associate director of Clinical Investigations and co-leader of the Gastrointestinal Clinical Research Team at the University of Arizona Cancer Center (UACC). She also is a professor with tenure in the Department of Medicine, Chief of the Division of Hematology and Oncology, and Medical Director for the Oncology Service Line. Dr. Shroff also served as Associate Dean for Clinical and Translational Research for the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson; 2021 – 2024. She came to UACC from MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, where she was on faculty from 2010-18 after completing her medical oncology fellowship there.
Research Interests
Dr. Shroff is a clinical and translational investigator focused on developing novel therapies for pancreatic and hepatobiliary cancers. She holds multiple positions nationally due to her expertise in these areas, including serving as the Hepatobiliary Subcommittee co-chair for the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG) and as Chair for GI ASCO 2025, a meeting sponsored by the American Society of Clinical Oncology focused on gastrointestinal cancers. Most recently, she was elected to serve on the ASCO Nominating Committee. She also is a member of the Scientific and Medical Advisory Board for the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation.

Dr. Shroff has led numerous clinical trials focusing on pancreaticobiliary tumors and is the national PI for SWOG 1815 which investigated a triplet chemotherapy regimen as a potential new standard of care for biliary cancers. This is based on a phase 2 study she led that is now published in JAMA Oncology. Dr. Shroff has been invited to speak at national and international meetings on topics related to targeted therapies for pancreatic and biliary cancers and has numerous peer-reviewed publications in this area.

Blood Cancer Awareness Month (September)

What are CAR T Cell Therapies and How Do They Help People with Blood Cancers?

There are 1.5 million Americans living with, or in remission from, a form of blood cancer. Many of these cancers fall into the category of B-cell mediated lymphomas, a type of the disease that starts in B-cells (a type of white blood cell) and often develops in adults older than 60, though can also be diagnosed earlier in life.

B-cell lymphomas can include both fast-growing (aggressive) and slow-growing (indolent) forms, and for those who relapse after initial treatment, or do not respond to initial therapies (refractory), prognosis is poor and there is a profound need for additional effective treatment options.

This September, during Blood Cancer Awareness month, we are thrilled to offer the opportunity to hear from expert Dr. Matthew Lunning, University of Nebraska Medical Center, and Astrid Q., who was diagnosed with lymphoma at the age of 28, and after initially undergoing chemotherapy, experienced a return of her cancer and was then treated with a chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell therapy in a clinical trial. Together they can discuss the reality that people face when dealing with relapsed or refractory (R/R) lymphoma and why CAR T cell therapy was the best option for her.

Most importantly, they can provide a deep dive into CAR T cell therapy, an innovative, personalized treatment for certain blood cancers that uses a person’s own immune cells to fight the disease. CAR T cell therapy has been shown to produce results in people living with certain B-cell lymphomas – when other treatments have failed.

Matthew Lunning D.O., FACP, is an Associate Professor in the Division of Hematology/Oncology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Dr. Lunning also is Associate Vice Chair of Research for the Department of Internal Medicine, Medical Director of the Clinical Research Center (CRC), and Medical Director of Cellular Therapies. He has served on several National Comprehensive Cancer Network’s guidelines committees including the Immunotherapy Toxicity & T-cell lymphoma panels. Dr. Lunning has been active in clinic research, research mentoring, education, and patient care.

About Astrid Q.:

Astrid Q. was diagnosed with lymphoma when she was 28 years old, while in college studying to become a physician’s assistant (PA). Despite initial rounds of chemotherapy, her cancer returned so she enrolled in a clinical trial to receive a CAR T cell therapy. At the time of her clinical trial participation Astrid was studying for the PA exam while receiving and recovering from CAR T cell therapy treatment. Since her one-time* treatment with CAR T, her yearly scans have been clear. Astrid enjoys meditation, spending time with her husband and baby boy, and her job as a PA.

* Treatment process can take approximately 2-3 months and includes leukapheresis, manufacturing, administration, and adverse event monitoring

This interview is sponsored by Bristol Myers Squibb.

With an osteoporosis-related fracture occurring every three seconds worldwide – experts believe there’s an urgent need for women to understand their risk factors for the disease.3

UnderstandOP.com

Osteoporosis is a common disease among postmenopausal women and those who have it may suffer a fracture in their lifetime.4 Yet, the majority of those with osteoporosis do not know they have it. Often referred to as a “silent disease,” there are typically no symptoms of osteoporosis until a fracture occurs.5

Additionally, many postmenopausal women who have been diagnosed with osteoporosis do not fully understand the risks associated with it. A fracture is associated with serious consequences and can be a life altering event – and postmenopausal osteoporosis will get progressively worse if not treated.2,6 Meanwhile, research shows that many women decline treatment that can help reduce the risk of fracture.7

Osteoporosis is a chronic disease affecting 10 million U.S. adults.3,8 It occurs when an individual’s bone mineral density decreases, leading to a reduction in bone strength which can increase the risk of fractures, or broken bones.5 This is especially common in women because hormone changes associated with menopause can lead to a rapid reduction in bone density – putting them at risk for fracture.4

Kristi Tough DeSapri, M.D.— owner of Bone & Body Women’s Health, a midlife women’s health medical practice — will discuss the need for women to understand their risk factors for osteoporosis and find strategies to maintain bone strength and reduce the risk for falls and fractures.

Dr. Tough DeSapri will discuss the risk factors for osteoporosis as well as explain why, after menopause, women should take an osteoporosis diagnosis seriously – and how they can be proactive in reducing their risk of fractures.

Bringing Attention to the Challenges of Caring for Those with Blood Cancer & Finding Solutions
to Ease the Emotional Toll on Caregivers & Patients

Celebrated every November, National Family Caregivers Month is a time to recognize and honor caregivers across the US. In a study by the National Alliance for Caregiving, about 50% of 111 cancer caregivers reported feeling “highly stressed” due to the intense and demanding nature of caregiving, and there is growing evidence this could potentially affect the mental health of the patients as well.1,2

In particular, the mental health of patients with blood cancer, including those living with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and their caregivers, can be impacted due to the physical, emotional and social effects of the disease.3,4

CLL is the most common leukemia in adults.5 It’s a type of cancer that starts in cells that become certain white blood cells (called lymphocytes) in the bone marrow. 5 The cancer (leukemia) cells start in the bone marrow but then go into the blood.5

As with other illnesses, COVID-19 has exacerbated the mental health impact of blood cancer on patients, as well as placing an added strain on caregivers. In a recent survey of 100 patients with blood cancer, 96% of patients reported their blood cancer has impacted their mental health since the start of the pandemic in 2020, and 72% of patients said they rely most on their family members to provide them with emotional support for their blood cancer.

Hematologist and oncologist Dr. Ken Miller of Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, who will discuss the impact of blood cancer, including CLL, on the mental and emotional health of both patients and caregivers, and share resources to help meet this important need.

http://understandbloodcancer.com/

This program is made possible by AstraZeneca.

Dr. Ken Miller is a hematologist and medical oncologist at the Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Miller has served as the Director of Outpatient Oncology and was a member of the Thoracic Oncology Group at the University of Maryland. He also previously served as the Director of the Yale Cancer Center’s survivorship clinic and the Director of the LiveStrong Survivorship Center of Excellence at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. He has authored five books, including: Choices in Breast Cancer, Medical and Psychosocial Care of the Cancer Survivor, Excellent Care of Cancer Survivors, Global Cancer Care, and “The Breast Cancer Book”. Dr. Miller’s wife Joan is a two-time cancer survivor and together they have lectured nationally and internationally on the role of empathy in medicine. The 24th International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2022) in July, the world’s largest gathering on HIV, will bring together scientists, industry leaders, advocates and community members to discuss the latest in HIV research.

Incredible advancements have been made in HIV care since the beginning of the epidemic, and today, people living with HIV who have access to medication can expect to live as long as the general population.1 With nearly half of people living with HIV in the U.S. over the age of 50, HIV research and treatment efforts have shifted to consider how to optimize care over the long-term and reduce the number of medications in a complete regimen.2

New data at AIDS 2022 will focus on innovative treatment options that address these considerations and meet the evolving needs of the HIV community. Data include two-drug regimens that reduce the number of antiretroviral medicines people are exposed to every day and treatments for long-term survivors who have developed resistance to other HIV therapies.

Dr. Harmony Garges, Chief Medical Officer at ViiV Healthcare, discuss key data from the conference, HIV care as patients grow older and where treatment may be headed next.

HOW A PATIENT’S OWN BLOOD CELLS CAN HELP ATTACK CANCER CELLS

During National Cancer Survivors Month, people around the country are recognizing the more than 16.9 million cancer survivors in the U.S. who are living with, through, and beyond their disease. www.lls.org

One of the most innovative treatments giving hope to people with blood cancers such as lymphoma, leukemia or myelomas is CAR T-cell therapy.1
• CAR T-cell therapies are made from a patient’s own blood cells and use the immune system to identify and attack cancer cells.2
• These innovative treatments have shown to be potentially life-saving therapies for patients with certain blood cancers, like large B-cell lymphoma (LBCL), which is the most common form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma and can be aggressive.2,3
• However, awareness of CAR T-cell therapy among potentially eligible patients in the U.S. is low – only about 1 out of 5 are aware of the therapy as a treatment option.4

Michael, a small business owner and father of three girls living in New Jersey, was diagnosed with LBCL in October 2018 and was treated with chemotherapy which he described as “pretty aggressive.” His cancer quickly returned – only four months later – and he decided to participate in a clinical trial for CAR T-cell therapy. Today he is 3+ years cancer-free.

Dr. Lori Leslie, a hematologist and oncologist at Hackensack Meridian John Theurer Cancer Center in New Jersey, treats people with blood cancers and has seen firsthand their devastating impact particularly for those whose cancer returns. Dr. Leslie, who treated Michael with CAR T-cell therapy, is available to discuss how recent treatment advances like CAR T-cell therapies offer people like Michael hope.

Michael and Dr. Leslie speak about CAR T-cell therapies for cancers like LBCL and how eligible patients and caregivers can learn more about these innovative treatments.
