Episode 621 Oceans and Spray: Climate Researchers Discuss Marine Cloud Brightening

Some of the most provocative discussions of climate that Project has hosted revolved around marine cloud brightening (MCB), a scientific innovation that reflects sunlight to cool the Earth.

Marine Cloud Brightening has sparked a wave of research and debate. In this fascinating discussion, three experts—Jessica Wan, Patricia Quinn, and Robert Tulip—explored both the potential and the risks of this geoengineering approach. (Excuse the expression! Some scientists try not to mention the word “geoengineering” because so many people react viscerally against it and end the conversation abruptly. But I assume that my readers are all open-minded, aren’t you? And some of you are climate scientists yourselves.)

At its core, marine cloud brightening is a proposed climate intervention that involves spraying seawater particles into the atmosphere to brighten clouds and increase their reflectivity. The idea is simple: white clouds reflect sunlight back into space, potentially cooling the planet and helping to mitigate global warming.

Jessica Wan, a PhD student studying marine cloud brightening, explained her work on modeling its effects in the Pacific Ocean. Through computer simulations, Jessica has modeled the regional impacts of MCB over areas such as California and the Aleutian Islands, showing that while it might offer short-term cooling effects, it could have unintended consequences in the long run—especially as the climate continues to warm.

The Challenges and Implications

Patricia Quinn, a senior researcher at NOAA, provided valuable insights into the complexities of atmospheric particulates and aerosols. She reminded us that while sulfates naturally occur in the atmosphere—emitted from phytoplankton and even from industrial sources like coal plants—the reduction of these particles apparently unintentionally contribute to global warming. This paradox, where efforts to clean up pollution might inadvertently exacerbate climate change, complicates the decision-making around geoengineering solutions like MCB.

One of the key insights from the conversation was the issue of teleconnections—the phenomenon where local interventions (like marine cloud brightening over the Pacific) can have far-reaching effects on other regions of the world. Jessica’s research revealed that cooling the ocean in one part of the world can influence temperatures on land far away, from North America to Europe. This is a reminder that climate is a global system, and any intervention must be studied and implemented with careful consideration of its global implications.

A Heated Debate: To Act or Not to Act?

The discussion also highlighted the deep divisions within the scientific community regarding the viability and ethical considerations of geoengineering. Robert Tulip, a climate repair advocate, underscored the urgency of finding solutions to slow down climate change, but raised critical governance concerns. If marine cloud brightening is ever to be deployed at scale, it will require global cooperation and oversight. The question remains: who gets to decide when and where these interventions happen? And what are the risks of unintended consequences?

Jessica’s findings suggest that MCB, while promising in certain contexts, might not be as effective in a warming world. By 2050, the same intervention might no longer deliver the cooling effects it promises today. This raises important questions about the role of geoengineering in climate strategy. Should we rush to experiment with MCB, or should we focus on understanding its risks in more detail before any real-world application?

Looking Forward: The Future of Marine Cloud Brightening

As the conversation drew to a close, there was a consensus that more research is needed. While the technology to implement marine cloud brightening at a large scale is now in its infancy, the discussion highlighted the urgency of continuing, and even expanding, such  experimentation. Patricia and Jessica agreed that small-scale studies are crucial in advancing our understanding of MCB’s potential benefits and risks.

The panelists mentioned two recent experiments. One is an ongoing, long-term application of MCB  to cool the waters and save the corals forming the Great Barrier Reef outside Australia. The local people, including indigenous groups, strongly support the measure.

On the other hand, there was a brief recent test in the San Francisco Bay, which spooked the local townspeople of Alameda into prohibiting it, though there would have been no possible harm in spraying a little more sea water into the air short period. As Robert pointed out, global cooperation and governance will be required to ensure that all geoengineering experiments are conducted responsibly.

The debate over MCB is just one part of the larger conversation about climate solutions. But it is an important one. The fact that small-scale interventions could have large-scale impacts underscores the complexity of managing climate change in a way that benefits everyone. It also reminds us that as we seek to mitigate climate risks, we must remain vigilant, recognizing the interconnectedness of our planet’s systems as well as the rapid approach of probable catastrophic climate change.

Conclusion: A Critical Moment in Climate Research

This conversation is an important contribution to the ongoing discourse on geoengineering and climate intervention. While marine cloud brightening offers exciting possibilities, its implementation is far from straightforward. The global implications of any climate intervention, particularly those that are based on geoengineering, should ordinarily proceed through prolonged phases of deep research. The question is: should scientists slow down and approach research cautiously, or is the global climate warming so fast that some interventions should be deployed as rapidly as possible, though if harmful effects arise, it may be necessary to stop suddenly?

For now, the debate continues. This conversation is far from over, and it will be critical to shaping the future of our planet.

C. difficile infection (C. diff infection) is a highly contagious bacterial infection that causes half a million illnesses and tens of thousands of deaths in the U.S. each year. Yet, few people know what it is and how it occurs, despite being declared a public health threat by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).1-3

C. diff infection causes debilitating symptoms such as severe diarrhea, fever, stomach pain, loss of appetite, nausea and colitis.1 This infection can happen to anyone, at any age, and can be contracted in some of the most common places in the community and in hospitals.4-6 When the infection strikes, it can have a devastating impact on everyday life, including taking care of loved ones, going to work regularly and carrying out typical activities. And C. diff infection can come back – known as a recurrence.

Antibiotics – the current standard of care for treatment of C. diff infection – treat the disease but also can be a contributing factor to the cycle of recurrence.1,7 It has been estimated that up to 35% of C. diff infection cases can recur after the initial diagnosis8-11, and after first recurrence up to 65% may develop a subsequent recurrence.11,12

Recently, the FDA approved a first-of-its-kind microbiome-based treatment to prevent recurrent C. diff infection after completing antibiotics for recurrent C. diff infection.

Paul Feuerstadt, M.D., Yale University School of Medicine, will discuss:
• What is C. diff infection and who is vulnerable to contracting it
• Why does this infection recur and what are the consequences of recurrence
• What are the treatment options for recurrent C. diff infection
• How has the newest FDA-approved treatment changed how recurrent C. diff infection may be treated

Patricia, who suffered from recurrent C. diff infection, will share her personal story of her struggle with the infection, how it impacted her life and how she broke the cycle of recurrence.

Chief Master Sgt. Ed Schloeman, Chairman and CEO of Operation Warrior Shield stated the organizations’ mission, “Our goal is to provide specially trained, loving and supportive canine companions to veterans and first responders and their families who live with physical and emotional injuries incurred during their time in service.” Bethann Carbone, CSO of Operation Warrior Shield explains, “We developed Operation Canine Companion because veterans are committing suicide every day. We know how important healing from trauma is. OWS’ Operation Canine Companion pets provide safety, camaraderie, unconditional acceptance, and a unique emotional support that helps reduce the stress and challenges that our heroes face every day.”

About Patricia Deshong:

Patricia Deshong joined the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation in mid-December 2021 after they reached out to her seeking an Executive Director with experience. She is a seasoned animal nonprofit executive with several years of experience leading Furry Friends Adoption, Clinic & Ranch, the largest no-kill animal shelter in Palm Beach North County. Deshong grew the failing nonprofit from bankruptcy into a debt-free organization with a new 15,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility unveiled in 2020. In 2014, she established their service dog program resulting in the placement of numerous trained service dogs to Veterans.

WHAT:
Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF), a nonprofit organization which remains steadfast in its commitment to identify and fund groundbreaking cancer research programs to save the lives of millions, hosted its annual gala at the Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill, NY on Saturday, August 27, 2016. The event’s Challenge Research Award raised over $3.5 million in support of the foundation’s work.

The gala was hosted in support of the 12th Annual Charles Evans PCF Pro-Am Tennis Tournament being held from August 26 – 28, 2016, named after the successful entrepreneur who constantly turned tragic events throughout his life into philanthropic causes. The gala evening was a wonderful night of dining, dancing and filled with loads of surprises. The event featured special musical performances by Grammy award-winning singer Dianne Reeves, double platinum recording artist Billy Idol, and nationally recognized pop vocal group The Company Men, with a special performance by Francis Collins, Director of National Institutes of Health. 100 percent of the funds raised throughout the evening went to supporting groundbreaking discoveries in cancer research.

The night began with a short quiz by the Founder of the Prostate Cancer Foundation Michael Milken, with guests curiously participating from their seats. Milken then introduced Jan Haber, PCF’s Vice President of Events, to the stage. Haber welcomed guests to the event and thanked them for supporting the very important work of the PCF, after which she introduced the evening’s first performer to the stage, Grammy-award winning singer Dianne Reeves, who performed a few of her celebrated jazz songs to the delight of the audience.

Reeves’ performance was followed by a short speech by Michael Milken on how far PCF has come since its founding, and how much of a difference the foundation’s work does. A video was shown highlighting the foundation’s progress and its aim to make prostate cancer an illness to “find in the history books”. Next, a few words were spoken by PCF’s President and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Jonathan W. Simons. Dr. Simons touched on the progress in gene research and how it has made it possible to identify the drivers behind the disease, in the fight against not only prostate cancer but all types of cancer.

The evening’s next performance was held by The Company Men, who performed a Motown medley, consisting of their interpretation of much loved songs by artists such as Simon & Garfunkel and Billy Joel. The vocal group had come all the way from Los Angeles to perform at the event, which they said they were honored to attend and being able to support. Following The Company Men was a surprise performance by the Director of National Institutes of Health, Dr. Francis Collins, who started off mentioning the nationwide cancer study that is currently being conducted in order to understand how to prevent and identify cancer risk factors at an early stage. Dr. Collins encouraged everyone to join in on this “unprecedented adventure”, before taking out his guitar for a surprise performance of Del Shannon’s “Runaway” in his own version, called “DNA”.

A live auction was also held to support a young scientist. Attendees were asked to donate $75,000 per year to support the research of a young scientist and his or her research in the fight toward prostate cancer. This was followed by an appearance by Mitch Modell, who presented the foundation with a check for $141,ooo on behalf of Modell’s Sporting Goods and all of its customers.

Michael Milken rounded up the evening’s lineup of performances and appearances by extending a heartfelt thank you to all performers, attendees, donors, hosts, pro tennis players and amateurs for making it an unforgettable evening in the support of finding a cure for prostate cancer. To top off the evening, a much anticipated musical performance was held by superstar Billy Idol, who kicked off his performance with crowd favorite “Cradle of Love”.

The Weekend’s Pro-Am Tennis Champions were: Ricky Sandler and Rick Leach, Alex Norcross and Alex Bogomolov Jr., Dick Merkin and Rohan Bopanna, Bill Finneran and Graydon Oliver. Finalists included: Mark Ein and Scott Lipsky, Marie Bernstein and Santiago Gonzalez, Ralph Finerman and Jonathan Erlich, Sammy Herzberg and Jonathan Schneider.

A silent auction was also held, including select items such as A Getaway to a Private Villa in Bali, sports memorabilia such as a signed plaque and boxing glove of legend Muhammad Ali and a signed Michael Jordan jersey, original photographs of Coco Chanel with model Jackie Rogers, as well as exclusive photographs of icons Prince, Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and Mick Jagger.

Campus Coach Lines President and Founder Bert Askwith, Honored by ABA Board of Directors
The American Bus Association Board of Directors honored longtime motorcoach owner/operator and
industry legend Bert Askwith at its spring board meeting May 2 in suburban Washington, D.C. The
presentation was made by ABA Chairman Tom JeBran to salute Askwith for nearly 85 years of
continuous service to the motorcoach industry.

In March, Bert turned 102, celebrating his birthday by going to work in Manhattan where he is President of Campus Coach Lines. Bert founded Campus Coach Lines in 1928 while he was a student at the University of Michigan, taking classmates from Ann Arbor to the east coast at a fraction of the cost of rail travel. The company was so successful that he put himself through college with the money he earned. In 1931, while the Great Depression weakened the economy; Bert moved the business to New York City where it continues operations today, 83 years later.

During his long and distinguished career, Bert has served in a variety of high-profile national and
regional industry leadership positions, including a nearly 20-year tenure on ABA’s Board of Directors.
In 2010 the Board made him an honorary lifetime member. Bert also served as the first Chairman of
the ABA Foundation Board of Governors and continues his service to the ABA Foundation as
Chairman Emeritus. Bert also served for six years as the President of the New York State Bus
Association.

Bert is also known for his generous charitable contributions. Among his favorite charities are the
United Way and his beloved University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

In typical fashion, Bert is always looking ahead, and as he accepted the award, he told his colleagues,
“Thank you for this honor, I am looking forward to working with you for many more years.” ABA Board Chairman Tom JeBran said of his longtime friendship and associate.

Activism In The Arts:  Arnon Milchan, respected and prolific film producer, for his part in bringing the critically acclaimed “12 Years a Slave” to the screen.  The film provides an honest and unflinching portrayal of the ugly truth about slavery in America and has helped reinvigorate discussion of human dignity and equality in our country.  Milchan, Chairman of New Regency Productions, has made many films that have garnered both critical and commercial success, including Noah, Pretty Woman, Once Upon a Time in America, JFK, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Natural Born Killers, Fight Club, War of the Roses, A Time to Kill, Under Siege, Love & Other Drugs.

Citizen Activism:   Jose Antonio Vargas, a leading activist on the issue of immigration reform and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, for his efforts to show the face of immigrants as hard-working, responsible and very American — even without the proper paperwork.  Vargas won a Pulitzer for his reporting on the Virginia Tech shootings, but soon after, he bravely chose to reveal his own status as an undocumented immigrant, risking deportation to help put a human face on immigration reform.  Vargas has since established his non-profit Define American and has been featured on the cover of Time Magazine.

ABOUT ARNON MILCHAN

ARNON MILCHAN (Executive Producer) is widely renowned as one of the most prolific and successful independent film producers of the past 25 years, with over 100 feature films to his credit.  Born in Israel, Milchan was educated at the University of Geneva.  His first business venture was transforming his father’s modest business into one of his country’s largest agro-chemical companies.  This early achievement was a harbinger of Milchan’s now-legendary reputation in the international marketplace as a keen businessman.

ABOUT JOSE ANTONIO VARGAS

Jose Antonio Vargas is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, filmmaker, and the founder of Define American, a campaign that seeks to elevate the conversation around immigration.

In June 2011, the New York Times Magazine published a groundbreaking essay he wrote in which he revealed and chronicled his life in America as an undocumented immigrant, stunning media and political circles and attracting worldwide coverage. A year later, he appeared on the cover of TIME magazine internationally with fellow undocumented immigrants as part of a follow-up cover story. Since then, he has testified at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on immigration reform, and written and directed Documented, a documentary film on his undocumented experience. It world premiered in June 2013 as the centerpiece of the AFIDOCS film festival in Washington, D.C.

He was a senior contributing editor at the Huffington Post, where he launched the Technology andCollege sections. HISTORY

In 1988 a group of entertainment and business professionals banded together to form Show Coalition, an entertainment network to inform, connect and involve those affiliated with the entertainment industry into political affairs and public policy. Entertainment executives, writers, directors, producers, actors, agents, and others in the community joined together for informational forums, conferences and initiatives in Los Angeles and Washington, DC. Show Coalition has been credited with playing a critical role in creating the Hollywood/Washington nexus of entertainment activism during that community’s most politically active years.

The Common Good was formally organized in New York City in 2007. As with Show Coalition, TCG hosts a variety of forums for thought leaders from across the political spectrum. It has created strategic alliances with other organizations and brought a steady stream of exciting speakers and has created The American Spirit Awards to honor those who make a difference in public affairs and civic life. The Common Good seeks to focus on increasing citizen participation in the political process and what can each do to help move our country forward.

Arnon Milchan (Hebrew: ארנון מילצ’ן‎; December 6, 1944) is an Israeli Hollywood film producer who has produced over 130 full-length motion pictures.^[2] Mr. Milchan, a multi-billionaire and owner of New Regency Films, was also a former key Israeli intelligence operative from the mid-1960s to the mid-1980s.^[3][4]

Arnon Milchan produced numerous critical and financial successes. After co-producing Pretty Woman, Milchan formed Regency Enterprises. Regency’s film credits include Oscar winners and nominees, as well as popular financial hits, including 12 Years a Slave, L.A. Confidential, JFK, Heat, Fight Club, and Mr. and Mrs. Smith and many more. He is considered one of the most prolific independent producers in Hollywood history. He is an Israeli citizen, and a resident of Israel.

Early life

Milchan was born in Rehovot, British Mandate for Palestine, in 1944. His family is Jewish.^[5] His father owned a fertilizer company,^[6] which Milchan inherited at the age of 21 upon his fathers sudden death. Over the years, Milchan turned the company into a successful chemical business.^[7] He also earned a degree from the London School of Economics, before he and his company (Milchan Brothers Ltd.) were recruited to LAKAM, a top secret Israeli intelligence organization responsible for obtaining technology and material for Israel’s nuclear program, and other highly secretive programs.^[8]

Film industry, and other businesses

Arnon Milchan became involved in the American movie business in 1977, after an introduction to American producer Elliot Kastner. Most notable among Milchan’s film collaborations was his early work with Martin Scorsese. He developed close friendships with Robert De Niro, and directors Roman Polanski, Sergio Leone, Terry Gilliam and Oliver Stone. Milchan started his own production company in 1991 called New Regency Productions. Through his company Regency, in partnership with Warner Brothers, and later with Rupert Murdoch at 20th Century Fox, and other business ventures, such as Puma AG, Milchan acquired a net worth estimated at about $4.7 billion as of 2014.

Arnon Milchan has produced over 130 films, and is recognized as one of the most prolific producers in Hollywood history, with films such as Noah, 12 Years a Slave,Once Upon a Time in America (1984) (in which he also makes a cameo appearance as the chauffeur), Brazil (1985), Pretty Woman (1990), Under Siege (1992),Natural Born Killers (1994), Boys on the Side (1995), L.A.
