TIME WARNER CABLE OPENS STATE-OF-THE-ART
LEARNING LAB AT GOOD SHEPHERD SERVICES

First TWC Learning Lab in Brooklyn to Provide Access to Computers
and High-Speed Internet For the Benefit of Local Residents

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, AUGUST 13, 2012 – Time Warner Cable today was joined by the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications (DoITT) and local officials to open a state-of-the-art Learning Lab at Good Shepherd Services in Park Slope, Brooklyn. The community services organization is the first in the borough to receive a Learning Lab, which is a Time Warner Cable-funded initiative providing New Yorkers with access to computers, e-learning programs and high-speed Internet to assist with their educational and professional development needs.

“Time Warner Cable is proud to partner with Good Shepherd Services, a prestigious organization which throughout its long history has improved the lives of countless New Yorkers,” said Brien Kelley, Time Warner Cable’s Area Vice President of Operations for Brooklyn and Queens. “We are excited to invest in Park Slope and look forward to our Learning Lab having a positive impact on the surrounding community.”

The Learning Lab is powered by high-speed Internet from Time Warner Cable Business Class, which is also providing the lab’s television and HD DVR services. The facility is also fully equipped with computers, computer software, printers and a HD television that are completely underwritten by Time Warner Cable. The value of the donation exceeds $50,000.

Bill Tyson, Regional Vice President of Commercial Services for Time Warner Cable Business Class, said, “We are very pleased to power this Learning Lab with complimentary high-speed Internet from Time Warner Cable Business Class. Our Learning Lab investments are a great extension of our mission of serving the city’s business community, as they help strengthen today’s workforce while providing young people with the tools they need to become successful later in life.”

“Good Shepherd Services is very grateful to Time Warner Cable for their partnership and support in establishing the Time Warner Cable Learning Lab at our Fifth Avenue location in Brooklyn,” said Sr. Paulette LoMonaco, Executive Director of Good Shepherd Services. “This facility aligns perfectly with Good Shepherd Services’ mission to provide youth and families with the services and support they need to make a safe passage to self-sufficiency. The Time Warner Cable Learning Lab will ensure that our program participants have access to cutting-edge technology and opportunities to improve and refine their computer literacy skills, which are so vital to achieving success in school and the workplace.”

“Digital literacy is essential to preserving opportunity for all,” said Assemblyman Jim Brennan. “That’s why I deeply appreciate that Time Warner Cable has partnered with Good Shepherd Services, a world-class social service organization, to establish a Learning Lab in Brooklyn. Congratulations and thanks!”

Assemblyman Felix Ortiz said, “This new Learning Lab will greatly benefit the community. Good Shepherd Services has such a positive impact on thousands of individuals, and this new Lab will help them accomplish their mission of providing development, education, and family services to those in need. I would like to thank Time Warner Cable for their generous support of Good Shepherd Services and for their support of the greater Brooklyn Community as a whole.”

“Today, in the city’s largest borough, the Bloomberg Administration’s work to bridge the digital divide takes another step forward by bringing the power of broadband to New Yorkers who need it most,” said DoITT Commissioner Rahul N. Merchant. “With private and non-profit partners like Time Warner Cable and Good Shepherd Services, we’re steadily improving access to this vital technology at what will soon be more than 100 centers citywide.”

Good Shepherd Services is a leading youth development, education and family service agency that focuses on high-need communities in Brooklyn and the Bronx, and serves over 20,000 program participants a year.

The Learning Lab at Good Shepherd Services is the fifth technology center that Time Warner Cable has officially opened in New York City. Additional Learning Labs are located at the Police Athletic League Center in Harlem, Sunnyside Community Services in Sunnyside, Queens, Gerard Carter Community Center in Stapleton, Staten Island, and the James Weldon Johnson Community Center in Harlem. The next Learning Lab to open will be at a Manhattan facility in Chinatown operated by the Chinese-American Planning Council.

Time Warner Cable made the commitment to open 40 computer centers enabled by broadband, branded as Learning Labs, when it renewed its franchise with the City of New York last year. In partnership with local not-for-profit organizations, the Labs enable Time Warner Cable to provide free broadband access to low-income communities throughout its service area.

Time Warner Cable’s New York City service area includes Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island and western Brooklyn, Mt. Vernon, NY, as well as Bergen and Hudson Counties in New Jersey.
