The Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF) hosted the 2018 New York Dinner at the Restaurant Daniel at 60 East 65th Street in New York City and raised $11 million dollars to support the foundation. The highly anticipated Dinner at Daniel was an exquisite culinary experience featuring a special guest performance by Grammy® Award winners Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo. The memorable evening welcomed leaders in medicine, top research scientists and distinguished New York City socialites to explore refined European cuisine, world-class wines and the gracious hospitality at Restaurant Daniel in support of the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

The charitable organization founded by Michael Milken is dedicated to identifying and funding groundbreaking cancer research programs. In true PCF fashion, the 2018 Dinner at Daniel commenced with a series of questions covering topics pertaining to PCF, cancer research and veteran care. Guests participated in the brief icebreaker by raising their hands, and ultimately, learned thought-provoking facts regarding the state of veteran care and those affected by prostate cancer. For instance, a crippling 33% of male U.S. veterans have been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

In their efforts to advance prostate cancer research and improve the lives of patients, the Prostate Cancer Foundation found that American veterans are often underserved. PCF’s partnership with the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) aims to create Centers of Excellence throughout the country that will bring state-of-the-art precision oncology care to veterans. Dinner guests graciously contributed in support of the exciting partnership between the PCF and the VA. The Barry & Daria Foundation matched their previous $2.5 million gift, committing, in total, $5 million to support equally both the Manhattan Campus for Precision Oncology Center of Excellence as well as a new campus in Florida. The 2018 New York Dinner was a momentous occasion celebrating the generosity of various supporters, constituencies and stakeholders.

This year marks the 25th Anniversary of the Prostate Cancer Foundation’s impact on cancer research and people’s lives. Throughout the years, PCF has enacted several programs and initiatives to save lives, improve the quality of life for those affected, develop precision disease detection leading to better treatments, bring awareness while encouraging action, cultivate talent, build a global funding engine and create a scientific model for curing cancer.

The Charles Evans Trust has been instrumental in funding groundbreaking discoveries in cancer research with the Annual Charles Evans PCF Pro-Am Tennis Tournament. Jan Haber, Vice President of Events for the Prostate Cancer Foundation, acknowledged Charles Evans trustees Bonnie Pfeifer Evans and Joel Pashcow for their commitment, support and friendship to the organization and being the official lead sponsor since 2011. Champions of the Charles Evans PCF Pro-Am Tennis Tournament in 2017, Larry Leeds and Marie Bernstein were awarded division trophies.

Throughout the 2018 New York Dinner at Daniel Restaurant, notable guests were recognized for their commitment to cancer research and their continued support of the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Headlining the evening, Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo delivered an incredible performance of their classic rock hits.

WHAT:
The inaugural Blue Jacket Fashion Show and Dinner was held Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at Pier 59 Studios during New York Men’s Fashion Week. In partnership with Johnson & Johnson, the Blue Jacket Fashion Show benefited the Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF), founded by philanthropist and financier Michael Milken. Money raised will go towards funding cutting-edge research that will save, extend and improve the lives of not only prostate cancer patients but other cancer patients as well.

The Blue Jacket Fashion Show brought together the fashion, entertainment, sports, healthcare, and media worlds around a national platform to openly discuss men’s cancer issues, with an emphasis on prostate cancer. Coinciding with February’s Cancer Prevention Month and New York Men’s Fashion Week, the Blue Jacket Fashion Show included designers such as John Varvatos, Nick Graham, Joseph Abboud, Nicole Miller, Rag and Bone, Proper Cloth, Stephen F, Maggie Norris, Gustavo Moscoso, Thom Browne and Haspel who used their creative talents to “reinvent” the traditional blue blazer.

Those walking the runway wearing one-of-a-kind blue jackets included models, actors, athletes, members of the media, and business titans. Among those walking were actor Mario Cantone, musician and model Ian Mellencamp, New York Giants Wide Receiver Victor Cruz, TV personality Carson Kressley, science educator and host of the forthcoming Netflix series Bill Nye Saves the World Bill Nye, New York Yankees Pitcher CC Sabathia, New York Post’s Richard Johnson, model Alex Lundqvist, and CNN Anchor Don Lemon. Several of the specially designed jackets modeled during the show will be auctioned off with proceeds going to the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

The fashion show was followed by a cocktail reception and a 3-course dinner, featuring seasonal ingredients and Mediterranean inspired dishes, designed by Executive Chef Simone Cucchiara. While guests were enjoying dinner, President and CEO of the Prostate Cancer Foundation, Dr. Jonathan Simons, addressed the attendees and thanked them for making it a memorable first Blue Jacket event in support of prostate cancer research and hoping to see everyone next year, making the Blue Jacket Fashion Show and Dinner a new annual event. A silent auction was also held, featuring sought-after sports memorabilia and original artworks, all proceeds benefiting the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

The more you know about the normal development and function of the prostate, where it’s located, and what it’s attached to, the better you can understand how prostate cancer develops and impacts a man’s life over time—due either to cancer growth or as a result of treatments.
Normal Anatomy
The normal prostate is a small, squishy gland about the size of a walnut. It sits under the bladder and in front of the rectum. The urethra—the narrow tube that runs the length of the penis and carries both urine and semen out of the body—runs directly through the prostate. The rectum, or lower end of the bowel, sits just behind the prostate and the bladder.
Sitting just above the prostate are the seminal vesicles—two little glands that secrete about 60% of the substances that make up semen. Running alongside and attached to the sides of the prostate are the nerves that control erectile function.
Normal Physiology
The prostate is not essential for life, but it’s important for reproduction. It seems to supply substances that facilitate fertilization and sperm transit and survival. Enzymes like PSA are actually used to loosen up semen to help sperm reach the egg during intercourse. (Sperm is not made in the prostate, but rather the testes.)
Other substances made by the seminal vesicles and prostate—such as zinc, citrate, and fructose—give sperm energy to make this journey. Substances like antibodies may protect the urinary tract and sperm from bacteria and other pathogens.
The prostate typically grows during adolescence under the control of the male hormone testosterone and its byproduct DHT, or dihydrotestosterone.
Prostate Zones
The prostate is divided into several anatomic regions, or zones. Most prostate cancer develops from the peripheral zone near the rectum. That’s why a digital rectal exam (DRE) is a useful screening test.
Benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), a non-cancerous prostate condition, typically develops from the transition zone that surrounds the urethra, or urinary tube. This is why BPH causes more difficulty with urination than prostate cancer typically does.
Treatment-Related Changes
Because the prostate is close to several vital structures, prostate cancer and its treatment strategies can disrupt normal urinary, bowel, and sexual functioning.
Urinary function—Under normal circumstances, the urinary sphincters (bands of muscle at the base of the bladder and at the base of the prostate) remain tightly shut, preventing urine that’s stored in the bladder from leaking out. During urination, the sphincters are relaxed and the urine flows from the bladder through the urethra and out of the body.
During prostatectomy—the surgical removal of the prostate—the bladder is pulled downward and connected to the urethra at the point where the prostate once sat. If the sphincter at the base of the bladder is damaged during this process, or if it’s damaged during radiation therapy, some degree of urinary incontinence or leakage may occur.
Bowel function—Solid waste that’s filtered out of the body moves slowly down the intestines, and, under normal circumstances, the resultant stool is excreted through the anus following conscious relaxation of the anal sphincter. Damage to the rectum caused by radiation, or more rarely, by surgery, can result in bowel problems, including rectal bleeding, diarrhea, or urgency.
Sexual function—If the erectile nerves are damaged during prostatectomy, which was standard during this type of surgery up until the mid-1980s, the ability to achieve erection is lost, though sexual desire is not affected. Erectile dysfunction can also result from damage to these nerves by radiation therapy, though this process usually occurs more slowly over time.
Modern techniques in surgery (nerve-sparing), radiation (intensity modulated radiation therapy, positioning devices, 3-D conformal technologies), and seed placement (brachytherapy) have been developed to try to minimize these side effects, and this process continues to improve.
Fertility—About 10% of men with prostate cancer have what is known as seminal vesicle invasion. This means the cancer has either spread into the seminal vesicles or has spread around them. If that occurs, seminal vesicles are typically removed during prostatectomy and targeted during radiation therapy. The loss of the prostate and the seminal vesicles renders men infertile. After surgical removal, ejaculation is dry, but orgasms may still occur.

WHAT: The Charles Evans PCF Pro-Am Tennis Tour was held in Bridgehampton, NY, over the weekend on Friday, August 22, to Sunday, August 24, 2014, raising over $2.5 million for the Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF).

This wonderful event, returning for its tenth year, sees 32 charity amateur players take to the courts against members of the ATP Tour over two exciting days of round robin competition. Guests and participants enjoy dining and socializing with the purpose of raising funds for the PCF in its efforts to eradicate prostate cancer, which affects one in six American men. The event kicked off on Friday with a cocktail party and dinner at the home of Julia and David Koch in Southampton. On Saturday, the first three rounds of the Pro AM tournament took place, followed by a lunch at the Palin residence. On Sunday guests enjoyed lunch at the final rounds of the Pro AM tour at the Bridgehampton Tennis and Surf Club and the Trophy Award Ceremony followed.

Mr. Evans created the Crusade for Fire Detection, aimed at educating the public on the need for fire detectors and lobbying for laws to make them mandatory. Charles sent out hundreds of fire detectors as gifts and chain letters. Countless lives have been saved through the mandatory laws of fire alarms. Charles had a true zeal for life. From WWII veteran to successful entrepreneur, feature film producer, to a dedicated philanthropist. Charles was a dynamic, charismatic, old school Gentleman. He was one of a kind and adored by all worldwide.
