Growth isn’t just about height—it’s a vital sign of a child’s overall health. Tracking physical growth is a crucial step towards monitoring your child’s health and an important factor in diagnosing pediatric growth hormone deficiency or PGHD.

PGHD is characterized by insufficient production of growth hormone (GH) by the pituitary gland, which is a small gland located at the base of the brain. It is estimated that 1 in 4,000-10,000 children globally have PGHD.

Here are 7 things children with PGHD may experience:

Short stature
Delayed puberty
Bone development challenges
Decreasing muscle mass and weakness
Emotional challenges
Low blood sugar
Reduced strength and endurance
Left untreated, PGHD can limit a child’s potential, physically, emotionally, and socially.

PGHD doesn’t just affect children—parents and caregivers of children with PGHD may feel discouraged and overwhelmed during this journey. Their concerns and fears about how this condition will impact their child can leave them feeling unheard.

It’s critical for parents to consult a healthcare professional as soon as they begin to notice delays in their child’s growth. Early diagnosis of PGHD and treatment are time-sensitive, especially because a child’s growth plates will eventually fuse, limiting their ability to achieve their full height potential. Delaying treatment can negatively impact final adult height and potentially affect other aspects of development.

For decades, the only treatment option available was daily injections of human growth hormone (somatropin). Long-acting growth hormone treatments have been developed that are given just once a week.

Healthcare professionals can work with parents to determine if treatment is needed and help ease concerns such as:

Noticing growth concerns and seeking guidance
Feeling anxious about timely diagnosis before growth plates fuse
Uncertainty about options to treat PGHD
Navigating the responsibilities of PGHD management
On Wednesday, September 17, Dr. Nidhi Gupta, pediatric endocrinologist, and founder and CEO of KAP Pediatric Endocrinology, is available to share her insights on what all parents need to know about PGHD. She will also discuss its signs and symptoms, and how treatment can help.

The 2nd annual Kids Cancel Cancer, benefiting the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF), will take place on Tuesday August 15th, 2023 at The Clubhouse in East Hampton. In addition to raising crucial funds for pediatric cancer research, the event will be an entertaining evening of arcade games, miniature golf, great food, raffle prizes, and more.

“Unlike, other fundraising events put on by SWCRF, this one was created and is being organized by kids,” said Marion Waxman, who is spearheading the event. “Last year’s event raised more than $100,000 allowing SWCRF to support the work of two leading pediatric cancer investigators – one based at St. Jude’s Research Hospital and the other at Schneider Children’s Medical Center in Israel. We hope to exceed this inaugural amount in order to fund additional scientists next year.”

While pediatric cancer deaths have declined by 65 percent over the past few decades, cancer remains a leading cause of death for children and teenagers. In fact, it is estimated that 10,500 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed among children (birth to 14 years old) each year, and about 1,190 children will die from the disease. Additionally, a recent study published in Aging AND Cancer found that childhood cancer survivors experience serious health issues in adult life, much earlier than their counterparts who did not have cancer as a kid.

“This is why prioritizing research to develop new treatments for childhood cancer is so urgent,” said Mrs. Waxman.

Tickets are $100 for kids, $125 for adults. How Innovative Health Tech Keeps Families Connected to Care
Managing chronic conditions like diabetes can be stressful
Learn how technology can help keep your mind and body healthy and connected to care

COVID-19 has many feeling stressed and isolated, exacerbating mental health challenges across the country. The CDC recently reported that more than two in five Americans struggle with mental or behavioral health issues due to the pandemic, with 31% noting symptoms of anxiety or depressive disorder.

Now, heading into a holiday season where many are foregoing traditional gatherings, the space between us can feel even more expansive – particularly for children and families managing diabetes. A survey by Opinion Health and supported by Abbott exploring the emotional impact of diabetes on children and families found a diabetes diagnosis makes a child 73% more likely to be anxious than those without it and, nearly half of parents surveyed believed their child’s diabetes caused them to have mental health issues.

To add to this, more than 50% of people with diabetes who were diagnosed with COVID-19 have been hospitalized, highlighting the population’s higher risk for severe complications. Connected care has never been more important; advancements in health technology, paired with the uptick in telehealth, have been instrumental in helping people stay healthy, especially during the pandemic and
upcoming holiday season.

Continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) are one of the advancements helping people with diabetes manage their condition safely from home – leaving them one less thing to worry about in the current environment. This is particularly true for parents of children with diabetes who reported feeling a heavy emotional burden over managing their child’s condition. Access to wearable CGM technology
that eliminates the need for fingersticks plays a critical role in making it easier.

Larry Kurt Midyett, M.D., pediatric endocrinologist, Midwest Women’s and Children’s Specialty Group, to explore insights from the survey and learn how health technology is empowering families to manage challenges associated with diabetes throughout the pandemic and into the holiday season.

This interview is sponsored by Abbott.

As COVID-19 Cases Continue to Increase in Many US States, Doctors Are Looking to Prepare
Families for What They Can Better Control – The Seasonal Flu

PrepareforFlu.com

While the number of people infected by the flu each year fluctuates based on a variety of factors such as virus strains and characteristics of the person being vaccinated, the CDC findings suggest that about 8% of the United States population contracts symptomatic flu illness every year. However, this flu season will be different than those of the past, as this year the US is also navigating the COVID-19 pandemic.

Many questions and anxieties remain surrounding the global pandemic, including when a vaccine will be available, whether a second wave is coming, or even when the first wave will end. Amid increased uncertainty, and as a result of the impacts of both the flu and COVID-19, doctors are actively preparing their communities to help stay protected and healthy.

This year, an important action that parents can take for their families is to talk to a healthcare provider about getting a flu vaccine. In fact, the CDC is encouraging flu vaccination for the upcoming season, now more than ever, to help reduce the burden on the healthcare system. While some people regularly get a flu vaccine, others do not. There are several vaccine options available, even for those who prefer a needle-free option. The CDC does not recommend one flu vaccine over another. It is important to speak to your healthcare provider to determine which vaccine is right for you and your loved ones.

Dr. Ravi Jhaveri, MD, Associate Division Head of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and Professor of Pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine will discuss how parents can prepare their families for this year’s flu season, while navigating alongside a global pandemic.

Until December 2016, there were no treatment options available for the nearly 9,000 individuals in the United States living with a rare disease called spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). Individuals with SMA often experienced symptoms related to the deteriorating effects of the condition, which may include the gradual onset of muscle weakness that can lead to the inability to stand or walk independently.
With scientific and treatment advances, patients of all ages have now been given hope. While commonly thought of as a pediatric disease, today 65% of individuals living with SMA are adults. One adult living with SMA is 28-year-old Kailey McCallister.
Despite being diagnosed with SMA at an early age, Kailey refused to allow the disease to keep her from having a positive outlook on her life and is eager to share her story. Kailey is joined by Dr. Margaret Frey, a neurologist specializing in SMA at Memorial Healthcare in Michigan, discusses the medical advances and initiatives that have helped the community fight back against this progressive disease

A New Study Reveals How to Fill a Vital Gap In Infant Gut Health
New research is showing that a specific probiotic bacteria is key to restoring a baby’s gut to its protective, natural state and providing a foundation for life-long optimal health.
When babies are born they begin to acquire a collection of bacteria called the microbiome –trillions of microorganisms that co-exist in our bodies and live all over us, on our skin, nose, mouth, eyes and gastrointestinal tract, or gut. Research shows that the infant gut microbiome plays a critical role in healthy immune and metabolic development, as well as meeting babies’ dietary needs.
The bacteria in a baby’s microbiome are passed down from their mom at birth. For generations, one strain called B. infantis dominated the infant gut. However, modern medical practices such as increased antibiotic use and C-sections have led to a microbial imbalance in the infant gut and a loss of this key bacteria. This imbalance has been associated with a range of chronic health issues including allergies, asthma, obesity, type 1 diabetes and a host of immunological disorders.
Now, recently published data shows for the first time that supplementation with activated B. infantis can completely transform the gut environment in babies that are fed breast milk. Along with restoring a healthy gut microbiome, the study results show that the supplementation significantly reduced levels of potentially harmful bacteria linked to disease in infants born either through natural or C-section delivery.
Mark Underwood, M.D., Chief Pediatric Neonatologist at UC Davis discussed the study results and explain how the activated form of this beneficial bacteria can be helpful for babies and about other ways to encourage the health of infants.

Dr. Benjamin S. Carson, Sr., M.D., had a childhood dream of becoming a physician. Growing up in a single parent home with dire poverty, poor grades, a horrible temper, and low self-esteem appeared to preclude the realization of that dream until his mother, with only a third-grade education, challenged her sons to strive for excellence. Young Ben persevered and today is an emeritus professor of neurosurgery, oncology, plastic surgery, and pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and he has directed pediatric neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center for over 39 years. He became the inaugural recipient of a professorship dedicated in his name in May, 2008. He is now the Emeritus Benjamin S. Carson, Sr., M.D. and Dr. Evelyn Spiro, R.N. Professor of Pediatric Neurosurgery, having retired on June 30, 2013.

Some career highlights include the first separation of craniopagus (Siamese) twins joined at the back of the head in 1987, the first completely successful separation of type-2 vertical craniopagus twins in 1997 in South Africa, and the first successful placement of an intrauterine shunt for a hydrocephalic twin. Although he has been involved in many newsworthy operations, he feels that every case is noteworthy – deserving of maximum attention. He is interested in all aspects of pediatric neurosurgery and has a special interest in trigeminal neuralgia (severe facial pain) in adults.

Dr. Carson holds more than 60 honorary doctorate degrees. He is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, the Horatio Alger Society of Distinguished Americans, and many other prestigious organizations. He sits on the board of directors of numerous organizations, including Kellogg Company, Costco Wholesale Corporation, the Academy of Achievement, and is an Emeritus Fellow of the Yale Corporation, the governing body of Yale University. He was appointed in 2004 by President George W. Bush to serve on the President’s Council on Bioethics. He is a highly regarded motivational speaker who has addressed various audiences from school systems and civic groups to corporations and the President’s National Prayer Breakfast.

In 2001, Dr. Carson was named by CNN and TIME Magazine as one of the nation’s 20 foremost physicians and scientists. That same year, he was selected by the Library of Congress as one of 89 “Living Legends” on the occasion of its 200th anniversary. He is also the recipient of the 2006 Spingarn Medal which is the highest honor bestowed by the NAACP. In February, 2008, Dr. Carson was presented with the Ford’s Theatre Lincoln Medal by President Bush at the White House. In June, 2008, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by the President, which is the highest civilian honor in the land. He has literally received hundreds of other awards during his distinguished career.

In June 2013, after 40 years of medical endeavors, Carson retired and today serves as Professor Emeritus of Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins University.

In addition writing a weekly opinion column for The Washington Times, Carson is a FOX News contributor and currently working on his newest book, One Nation, scheduled for release in May 2014.

Today, Dr. Carson and his wife, Candy, dedicate themselves to expanding the reach of the Carson Scholars Fund. Their dream is to name a Carson Scholar in every school within the United States.

A Message from Dr. Carson

I am fully aware that there are those organizations who desperately would like for me to seek public office, specifically that of the President of the United States. I have not endorsed any of these organizations and have neither any professional nor personal relationships and am not in communication with any of them. Furthermore, I maintain that as of today it is not my intention to seek public office. Instead I will continue to strive very hard to not only expose what is happening in our nation, but also to suggest ways to regain a direction that will lead our nation towards freedom and justice for all. If God has other plans for me moving forward, I am certain he will make those clear and I will always listen.

NEW YORK CITY – Monday, September 3rd, marked the end of a successful week of collaboration between A Free Bird and Celebrity Chef Floyd Cardoz! A Free Bird Organization’s young rising star, Nicole Morreale, collaborated with Top Chef Master Floyd Cardoz and Battery Park City restaurant, North End Grill, to create a special dessert. This sweet treat was made exclusively to celebrate and support A Free Bird’s mission to give young artists who have been affected by cancer a chance to continue exploring their passions. Winner of Bravo’s Top Chef Masters competition, Floyd Cardoz, and the pastry chef of North End Grill, Alexandra Ray, worked with seventeen-year-old culinary enthusiast and pediatric cancer survivor, Nicole Morreale, to create a special peach ice cream and raspberry sorbet sundae.

From August 27th through September 3rd, the dessert was featured on North End Grill’s menu as an exclusive item, and the proceeds along with donations are going directly to A Free Bird, as well as the Pediatric Cancer Foundation and Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital of New York Presbyterian.

This event was a great accomplishment! On Monday, August 27th, actor and film producer, Leonardo DiCaprio, was at the North End Grill and generously donated to A Free Bird’s cause. Our sponsors included Best Buy, Vivendi Corp., Power Ice, Dasha Wellness and Spa, and In2Website. 16th Avenue Home Center and The Peppermill Inc. donated cookware for Nicole, and Home Cooking New York donated cooking classes for the aspiring chef. When asked about the opportunity to work with the skilled Chef Cardoz, Nicole said, “The experience I had was in fact amazing…This opportunity was one in a million. It’s every child’s dream to meet and collaborate with people who they believe that they might become when they’re older. In this case this was a dream of mine, to get a sneak peek look at what goes on in a professional kitchen.”

Nicole was diagnosed with a brain tumor when she was 7 years old. Now 17, she is cancer free and dreams of being a pastry chef. She has even showcased her cooking and baking skills at events for the Pediatric Cancer Foundation and impressed her supporters with her talent and passion for cooking. A Free Bird is very happy that we had the opportunity to help Nicole pursue her goal and we look forward to helping many more young artists.
