He was the first professor of Afro-American studies at Harvard University. In recognition of his merits, the Ephraim Isaac Prize for Excellence in African Languages is given annually to the Harvard graduate who writes the best essay in African studies.

Early life
Isaac was born to an Ethiopian mother and a Yemeni Jewish father in Wolega Kifele Hager, Nejo, Ethiopia, in 1936. His actual date of birth is unknown. In high school, he randomly chose 29 May as his nominal birthday. He received his early education in Ethiopia.

Career
Isaac has been a professor at various universities and has published scholarly articles and books. He was the first faculty appointment in Harvard University’s Department of African and Afro-American Studies in 1969, and he played an important role in the early history of the department. Committed to this emerging field of scholarship, Isaac continued as a faculty member until 1977 and taught almost half of the students enrolled in the program.

Isaac has also lectured at:

Princeton University Department of Near Eastern Studies, 1983–1985; introduced the first African language course in 1984; was visiting professor of religion and African American studies 1995–2001; and remains a fellow of Butler College.
Hebrew University (ancient Semitic languages)
University of Pennsylvania (religion, Semitic languages)
Howard University (Divinity School)
Lehigh University (religion)
Bard College (religion, history)
His subjects range from those mentioned above to Biblical Hebrew, rabbinic literature, Ethiopian history, the concept and history of slavery and ancient African civilizations. He was a fellow at the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Institute for Advanced Studies. He has been a fellow at Harvard University’s W. E. B. Du Bois Research Institute (1985–1986) and at the Center of Theological Inquiry at Princeton (1989–1992).

Isaac had a long-running dispute with the president of Harvard regarding the denial of his strong nomination for tenure by the then Department of African American Studies. After several appeals by the president of Harvard to drop the charges, Isaac won a major victory when the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit in Boston ruled in his favor by that rejected the president’s appeal, after which the president proposed to settle the case out of court, offering Isaac a fellowship position and paying all legal fees.

In November 2021, Canadian author Jeff Pearce leaked a video that appeared to show Isaac in a virtual meeting with Eleni Gabre-Madhin and several Western diplomats working to topple Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government to create a transitional government in favor of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) during the Tigray War. Despite both being able to refute the allegations, they were barred from traveling to Ethiopia, and a wide range of condemnation came from within Ethiopia and its diaspora.

Peace contributions and activities
Contributions

As a peace activist, Isaac has made important contributions to peace and reconciliation. He founded an ad hoc Peace Committee at a critical stage in 1989. The committee – a dozen Ethiopian elders – facilitated bilateral negotiations between the government and conflicting parties at home and abroad. This created a forum for a peaceful resolution to the violence and bloody conflict. The committee accelerated the July 1991 end of the 30-year civil war in the Horn of Africa. The committee also helped raise funds to defray the cost of the Addis Ababa Conference for a Peaceful and Democratic Transition at the end of the war. A transitional government of Ethiopia was formed, and the Transitional Council later became the Parliament of Ethiopia. He participated in the conference as an observer, and gave one of the three concluding addresses. In 1992, he organized, with the help of fellow elders, Dr. Haile Sellasie Belay and Dr. Tilahun Beyene, an international teleconference of religious reconciliation – with eight conflicting Ethiopian archbishops and several other religious leaders. It resulted in the resolution of serious religious disputes that arose among the archbishops of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church regarding church administration and appointment of a patriarch.

Between 1998 and 2000, he led an Ethio-Eritrean peace delegation to Ethiopia and Eritrea during the tragic war between the two. This delegation was the only group from the region that both sides found acceptable or welcome. Since 2007, he has promoted reconciliation and repatriation of several Ethiopian and Somali liberation front movements in exile. In 2007, he negotiated the release of 30 Ethiopian political leaders and members of parliament. Isaac has also negotiated the release of about 35,000 prisoners and has helped organize inter-political party dialogues, an election board, national police chiefs and justices seminars. This was done in cooperation with the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York and other experts, and an interfaith symposium to promote the value of democratic and human rights to strengthen peace and reconciliation efforts. In 2009, he was actively engaged behind the scenes in the Ethiopian government treaty with a major branch of the Ogaden National Liberation Front. In 2012, he was involved with the release of two kidnapped Germans and in 2013, the release of two Swedish journalists. He continues his peace and reconciliation work.

Activities
Isaac is currently the international chair of the Horn of Africa Board of Peace and Development Organization (Addis Ababa, Asmara) and the former president of the Yemenite Jewish Federation of America. He founded (1960), and was chair of the Committee for Ethiopian Literacy, the first African/Ethiopian federal tax-exempt organization: the National Literacy Campaign of Ethiopia (NCLO), for which he was executive director from 1967 to 1974, which made millions literate in the late 1960s. In 1959, he organized the founding meeting of the Ethiopian Students Association in North America (ESANA) in Chicago, becoming the first president of the organization.

He is on editorial boards of two international scholarly journals: Journal of Afroasiatic Languages and Second Temple Jewish Literature. Isaac is a member of the board or advisory council of several interfaith and intercultural groups and organizations, nationally and internationally. These include the Temple of Understanding, the Institute of Religion and Public Policy, Tanenbaum Center for Interreligious Understanding, Princeton Fellowship in Prayer, Institute for Jewish Community Research, and the Oxford Forum in England. In this capacity, Isaac has contributed to numerous peace and reconciliation dialogues in the Middle East, Africa and Ireland.

In the 1980s he was an active member of the Harvard-Radcliffe Alumni Association against Apartheid. He was nominated twice to the Harvard University Board of Overseers on an Anti-apartheid slate along with fifteen other distinguished Harvard alumni, including those who struggled against South African Apartheid and Archbishop Tutu. In 1993 (Chicago, IL) he was a signatory to the groundbreaking Document Toward a Global Ethic along with the Dalai Lama, the late Joseph Cardinal Bernardin of Chicago, and others, as a Jewish delegate to the Parliament of World’s Religions and a member of the about 150 Assembly of Religious and Spiritual Leaders. He was the first to propose in October 1993 to the Parliament the idea of a “united nations” of world religions (UR) to promote world peace and prosperity. Between 1994 and 2005 (New York, NY), he was an active member of the National Committee on American Foreign Policy at the height of their involvement with the Northern Ireland peace process. In 2004 (Amman, Jordan) he contributed to peace meetings as a member of the peace delegation of Peacemakers in Action of the Tanenbaum Center for Interreligious Understanding, sponsored by Prince Hassan Ibn Talal with the Tanenbaum Center for Interreligious Understanding. In 2005 (Amman, Jordan) Isaac also contributed to other peace-building symposia among the three followers of the Religio

Barbara Simmons, executive director of The Peace Center, said, “We want young people to both see and hear a message – one of kindness, compassion and service to our community. Our goal is to attract about 6,000 people to be part of the human peace sign.”

Simmons said, “It is not just about breaking a world record. This is an opportunity for us all to stand as one to support peacemaking efforts in our community, to embrace our humanity with a conscious effort to make peace a priority in our homes and our schools.”

This is a year-long effort to hold events throughout the year to include: workshops, dialogues, forums and opportunities to Speak Up for Peace.

Peace Center Board Member Cory Amsler said, “The Human Peace Sign effort is an opportunity to make a positive, creative statement at a time when there is too much anger and intolerance- not from a distance on social media, but publicly and in person with your friends and neighbors. It’s about finding community and common purpose with your fellow human beings.”

The Peace Center is a non-profit organization serving the community since 1982. It educates, empowers, and supports individuals, family, schools and organizations with efforts to prevent violence, promote peaceful resolution of conflict, and foster inclusive, equitable and safe communities. Programs are offered in conflict resolution, mediation, family empowerment, respect for self and others in an effort to reduce violence, bullying, cyber-bullying, relational aggression, racism, intolerance and inequality.

People are asked to use social media to help encourage thousands to be part of the Human Peace Sign. Please follow The Peace Center on Twitter and Instagram: The_Peace_Center
Smart Bridge Provides Remote Control of Lights and Shades Using Siri®,
Adding Convenience and Simplicity to Everyday Life

Coopersburg, PA (embargoed until January 5, 2016) – Creating a smarter and more connected home has never been easier. The affordably-priced Caséta Wireless smart home system from Lutron Electronics provides convenient control of lights, shades and temperature anytime, anywhere. Today, the company announced the ability to control Lutron shades using its HomeKit-enabled Caséta Wireless Smart Bridge providing users with simple, convenient control of some of the most frequently-used products in their homes.

With 20+ years of experience utilizing reliable wireless technology in connected home products, Lutron introduced the Caséta Wireless system in 2014 as an affordable connected home solution ideal for smaller areas.

Now Use Siri to Control Lutron Shades
Earlier this year, Lutron released one of the world’s first Apple HomeKit-enabled products – its Caséta Wireless Smart Bridge, which allows users to control their lights conveniently and securely via Siri using their iPhone®, iPad®, iPod touch® or Apple Watch®. Adding Lutron shade support to the HomeKit-enabled Caséta Wireless Smart Bridge provides a more streamlined user experience and a third option for controlling Lutron devices in the home. The other two options – the Lutron App and Pico Wireless remote control – were introduced last year.

The HomeKit-enabled Caséta Wireless Smart Bridge (a do-it-yourself solution) supports Serena battery-powered shades, while the Smart Bridge PRO (a professionally-installed solution) supports Lutron Sivoia® QS Triathlon wireless shades (both roller and fashion honeycomb styles), plus Sivoia QS drapery tracks, the Kirbé® vertical drapery system, tensioned shades, pleated shades and Roman shades.

“Using something familiar, like Siri, to control a home’s lights and shades simplifies the concept of the connected home and makes it easier than ever for people to be in control of their space.” said Matt Swatsky, Lutron’s Director of Product Management. “Simply saying ‘Hey Siri, turn on the lights’ or ‘Siri, open the shades’ results in an experience which feels very natural and is completely integrated with your iOS device. Also, people can set Serena shades to a desired level in scenes like ‘Good Morning’ or ‘Good Night’ with other HomeKit compatible accessories so that you can enable everyday experiences using Siri.”

Caséta Wireless kits and Lutron shading solutions are available now with suggested list prices starting at $80 and $349, respectively. Visit CasetaWireless.com or SerenaShades.com for more information, and to find local resellers. The free Lutron App is available in the App Store.

o $1 Billion – The expected financial contribution from the West Hershey plant to the Pennsylvania economy over the next five years
o 70 Million – The number of Hershey’s® Kisses® Chocolates that come off the line at the West Hershey facility daily
o 300,000 – The number of miles you get when you line up the daily production of Hershey’s® Kisses® Chocolates

The Hershey Company announced that the world’s most technologically advanced chocolate making facility – a $300 million investment in Hershey, PA, that positions the company for its next 100 years of global growth – is officially “open for business.”

The new facility features proprietary, state-of-the-art technology never before used in the manufacture of confectionery. The new technology was developed specifically for the plant, including highly automated, large-scale Hershey’s Kisses Chocolate operations. The plant’s advanced Information Technology systems include automated, real-time diagnostics systems to help keep operations running smoothly 24 hours a day.

The expanded West Hershey facility is one of the company’s largest capital investments and represents one of the largest construction projects in Pennsylvania in two decades. The formal opening highlights Hershey’s strategy to grow its business globally while remaining true to its heritage and values, grounded in more than a century of chocolate making and confectionery innovation in Hershey, PA.

“Today, we are celebrating our proud Pennsylvania heritage, the growing popularity of Hershey products in global markets, our continuing investments in productive technology and our great workers who make it possible to enjoy these iconic products,” said John P. Bilbrey, President and CEO, The Hershey Company.

“Hershey employees built this dynamic business during the first century of chocolate making in Hershey starting in 1905. Today, we honor each of those individuals and our history and applaud those who designed, built and operate our Factory of the Future. They continue to produce the finest chocolate confectionery right here in Hershey, PA, where it all began. Together, we are securing the next century of growth for this iconic company.”

As a major employer in the state, the West Hershey plant is expected to contribute more than $1 billion to the economy of Pennsylvania over the next five years through supplier contracts, payroll and related spending.

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett commented, “I am working as Governor to ensure there is a job for every Pennsylvanian that wants one and an educated Pennsylvanian for every one of those jobs. I am proud the Commonwealth was able to partner with Hershey as they grow, evolve, create jobs, train great employees and continue their commitment to Pennsylvania’s prosperity.”

Investing in Pennsylvania to Grow Globally

The new 340,000 sq. ft. expansion at West Hershey is located less than two miles from the company’s original chocolate factory opened in 1905 by Milton Hershey. Key features include:

• the latest manufacturing technology and proprietary candy manufacturing equipment that speeds production, delivers consistent high quality and provides the opportunity to produce new products in the future.
• high-speed, high-tech new production lines with the capacity to support Hershey’s growing business now and well into the future. This includes the most technologically advanced, automated chocolate syrup production lines in the world.
• new Hershey’s Kisses Chocolate lines that can produce more than 70 million Hershey’s Kisses Chocolates per day.

The expansion is Pennsylvania’s single largest manufacturing investment since the construction of the original West Hershey plant in 1991. The new development infused $70 million into the Pennsylvania economy and created more than 300 construction jobs.

The plant’s workforce includes about 700 employees who transitioned from the original Hershey plant on East Chocolate Ave. – the company’s oldest facility, which ran continuously from 1905 until its retirement in April 2012.

Hershey’s manufacturing presence and investments bring significant economic benefit to the local and regional economies:

• Hershey’s $300 million investment is the largest direct investment by a food manufacturer in Pennsylvania in the last 20 years. Hershey’s Project Next Century included about $25 million in materials and supplies sourced in Pennsylvania.
• With 4,800 employees in Pennsylvania, 8,800 in the United States and 14,000 worldwide, The Hershey Company is the third-largest manufacturer in the state.
• Hershey trained approximately 700 employees to prepare them to work in the plant’s high-tech manufacturing environment.
• The West Hershey plant includes stainless steel corn syrup and fresh milk silos with the capacity to hold millions of pounds of fresh ingredients. All of the silos were manufactured in Lancaster County, PA.

Building on Hershey’s Innovation Heritage

More than a century ago, Milton S. Hershey revolutionized the chocolate industry by making chocolate an affordable treat and building a company focused on delighting consumers. The new West Hershey plant continues Milton Hershey’s passion for using innovation, technology and inspiration to make great candy accessible, affordable and delicious.

Work on the latest expansion began with groundbreaking in September 2010 and was completed on schedule earlier this year. The construction used 17,000 yards of concrete, equivalent to a 65-mile long sidewalk. Contractors installed 600 tons of reinforcing steel, 10 miles of utility piping and 1,900 gallons of paint.

“The West Hershey facility is a testament to the commitment and dedication of our tremendous plant employees,” said Terry O’Day, Senior Vice President, Global Operations. “I am proud of how our people have adapted quickly and recognized the opportunities provided by the latest technology. They contribute directly to improved quality, speed and efficiency. They truly represent the manufacturing employees of the future, operating one of the most technologically advanced candy factories in the world.”

The plant represents major investments in logistics, computer technology and employee facilities. State-of-the-art, computer-controlled manufacturing processes include software and machinery developed and adapted by Hershey’s production line operators and managers. The new plant continues Hershey’s tradition as one of the few chocolate manufacturers to use fresh, liquid milk to ensure consistent high quality. There is also a fresh almond roasting plant onsite.

The plant also continues The Hershey Company’s commitment to sustainability and the environment. The building expansion was a “Zero Waste to Landfill” (ZWL) construction project and the plant will continue to operate as a ZWL plant.

The expansion at West Hershey is the largest component of Project Next Century – a program to modernize and upgrade Hershey’s global supply chain and ensure a competitive cost structure. Other recent investments in Hershey, PA, include $50 to $75 million in upgrades to distribution and administrative facilities.

West Hershey is one of the company’s eight manufacturing sites in the United States. Locations include: Hazleton, PA; Stuarts Draft, VA; and Memphis, TN.

“A Nation of Wusses”

WHO: The Common Good (TCG) hosts a discussion with former Governor Ed Rendell (D-PA) in New York City. TCG is a non-profit, non-partisan organization that promotes participation in our democracy through the free exchange of ideas and civil dialogue. We are dedicated to finding common ground and encouraging the civic engagement that is so essential for a thriving democracy.

WHAT: Governor Ed Rendell is a former governor of Pennsylvania, a former head of the Democratic National Committee, current MSNBC senior political analyst and a partner at Ballard Spahr LLP.

WHY: Governor Rendell takes a swipe at today’s leaders from both political parties for a lacking backbone and leadership. In his new book he chides Americans for aiming too low and becoming too complacent. Part autobiography and part prescription, it provides a refreshing and powerful insight on American politics today.
