This story sounds like a nightmare, but for Elma Linz Kanefield it was very real and life changing. She wanted to understand how and why this “stage fright” happens and what makes some performers succeed while others struggle.

Elma’s trauma inspired her to become one of the world’s only specialists in the psychology of the performing artist. She has shared how she empowers performers and restores their mental health in her new book Hamlet’s Mirror: Reaching Your Performance Potential Onstage and Off (September 2022, Original Trade Paperback, $15.99).

Elma defines Performance Potential as “being the best you can be and doing the best you can do based on what you know in the moment of performance.” This is an internal state when you are emotionally and mentally able to balance the challenges, fears, and insecurities that can come with entertaining others.

“Paul Josephs; composer, performer, wordsmith, singer, guitarist, New York native, educator, environmental activist, blues man. Been playing professionally since 16; hit the scene with these older blues musicians playing all around NYC and also ran my own night on Tuesdays opening up for the comedy show at the NY Improv. Since then have had the good fortune to have toured and been hired for session work with a handful of wonderful musicians; Idris Muhammad, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Pharoahe Monch, Jean Grae, Beyonce, Citizen Cope, Maceo Parker, Aurthur Blythe, Kenwood Denard, Rodney Jones, The Roots, Nikki Glaspie, Alice Smith etc.… have released two of my own albums; the second one, Strong World, has had me touring in Germany, Holland, Switzerland, England, and France.

Grew up on the Hudson River, the native people of this land called it Mahicanituk or “river that flows both ways,” and named themselves after it as “people of the river that flows both ways,” Muhheakunn (the Dutch used Mohican.) The songs and spirit are connected with this river; as is true for many musicians and artist alive now and many greats that came before including John Coltrane and Thelonius Monk.

The music is performed with different ensembles often with either a trio of guitar, bass and drums or a solo concert featuring just guitar or piano and voice; and also at times the music is presented in one-man concerts featuring live-looping. Sometimes the space on stage contracts significantly as the group expands into a septet with trumpet, trombone, sax, and keys or another guitar.

I produce music of all kinds with all different types of people and conduct production and song writing workshops with students all over new york city and the world.

On the road with purpose and leaving a trail of raised spirits in the wake.

Solo play honors legendary performer, patriot and feminist Marlene Dietrich

New York (June 6, 2018) – “Dietrich,” a compelling solo play about iconic German actress Marlene Dietrich, will wow New York audiences in a special one-night performance at the Triad Theater June 22.

“Dietrich” will take the stage at 9:30 p.m. at The Triad, the celebrated and widely-known Off-Broadway theater located at 158 W. 72ndSt.

Written by Willard Manus, directed by Judith Rose and starring Cindy Marinangel, “Dietrich” is a based on a true story. Set in May 1960, the play takes place when the actress returned to the Berlin stage for the first time since fleeing the Hitler regime in the 1930’s. Inside her dressing room at the Tatiana Palast Theater, Dietrich weighs whether to go through with the live performance despite threats on her life by Nazi sympathizers who resented her for having spent much of World War II entertaining American soldiers on the front lines. To them, Dietrich is a turncoat; a traitor who deserves to be shot and killed on stage.

“Dietrich” (formerly known as “Marlene”) celebrated its world premiere at the Brickhouse Theatre in Los Angeles and recently debuted in New York at the Hudson Guild Theatre as part of the New York Theatre Festival’s annual Winterfest.

More about the Memorial concert on Thursday. Over 400 people have signed up!
The performers were all people who knew and in some way worked with Ellen and I.

Patti Rothberg is a Scarsdale based singer-songwirter who had a gold album in the 90’s, who writes and performs very moving songs. Patti and I collaborated on a song entitled Genius Bar after she performed with a then unknown artist. They had both just broken up with people who worked at the same Apple store on 5th Ave. This inspired our song at bit.ly/a5f5cm. The other artist’s song was a little different and turned out to be a little more successful onceChristine Aguilera picked up on it. It is called Say Something and that other artist was Ian Axel. It is also sadly ironic……

Jennie Walker is a terrific singer and songwriter who has charmed us with her performances and collaborated on a musical play I wrote called Broad on Wall. She will sing Its Our Time, a song she once dedicated to Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign. The Clintons got to meet Ellen at her part-time job at ICD Jewelry store, and they too, were taken by Ellen’s warmth and wonderful presence. The Clintons have been very kind and supportive in the wake of this tragedy.

Nthomb’Khona Dlamini is one of the original performers at our legendary South African-style Barbecues (The Scarsdale Braai) that began in our backyard and over the years brought hundreds of people to various parks in Westchester. She and her husband, bass-player,Jimmy Mgwandi were the hit of our events and her voice is reminiscent of a young Miriam Makeba. Even after Disney discovered her and put her in the Lion King, she continued to perform at our events. Ellen loved her version of Pata Pata and many other songs in Zulu and Xhosa whose meanings she may not have understood but whose emotional impact she got completely.

The musical director, Berklee School of music graduate and professional drummer, Joel Arnow is a family member.

This is not a fundraiser but we are asking people, if they wish, to help us offset the cost of mounting this kind of event at a top performance venue in midtown Manhattan.

We have not forgotten the other victims in this tragedy and can only hope this will begin the healing and inspire the best minds of our industry to help those in legacy industries to do better. We never knew we were interdependent. Sadly, now we do.
