“Living looks like still dreaming. A refusal to let cancer suffocate you while you’re still breathing,” wrote prominent spoken word artist Jae Nichelle as part of the new MM Told True campaign.

Designed to empower people with multiple myeloma (MM), MM Told True highlights the stories of those with the disease, bringing them to the forefront through spoken or visual art. In her thought-provoking poem, Jae tells the story of Oya – a committed father, podcaster, aspiring musician and advocate for health equity in the Black community – who was diagnosed with MM in 2017, despite difficulty having his concerns taken seriously.

Since his diagnosis, Oya has become an outspoken member of the MM community, with the hope that others will reach a quicker diagnosis and feel supported through treatment.

MM is a currently incurable cancer of plasma cells in the bone marrow with over 34,000 new cases estimated to be diagnosed in 2023. Even with treatment, the disease tends to relapse – meaning symptoms come back after temporarily improving – or progress.

Patients report feeling like they’re inside a maze, as promising treatment paths repeatedly hit a wall. MM disproportionately impacts ethnic and racial minority groups in incidence, onset and outcome, with Black patients twice as likely to die from the disease compared with white patients.

MM Told True not only illustrates patient stories, but also provides tools and information about MM – so people living with the disease can feel educated and empowered against this relentless blood cancer.

The next phase of the campaign involves encouraging others affected by MM to share their unique stories on MMToldTrue.com, whether it comes in the form of a personal photo, a powerful message or something else that expresses how they feel. These lived experiences can serve as inspiration for people with MM and their care partners.

On March 2, Oya and Jae will be available to discuss how they came together to create meaningful art from Oya’s story, his experience living with MM, and how others can share their own stories and find support through the MM Told True website.
Many people may think that leg swelling, pain, tenderness or redness of the skin are seemingly minor symptoms, but they could point to a potentially serious condition such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which can lead to a pulmonary embolism (PE).1 Some PE symptoms may include difficulty breathing, chest pain or discomfort, faster than normal or irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, light-headedness or fainting.1,2

www.notimetowait.com/dvt-pe-explained

According to CDC data from 2010, DVT and PE affects as many as 900,000 Americans each year.3 Further, PE could be deadly.1,3 No Time to Wait has launched in part to raise awareness about symptoms of DVT and PE and encourage those experiencing these symptoms to not delay speaking with a healthcare provider. Symptoms can be representative of many conditions, and only a healthcare provider can determine whether these symptoms indicate DVT/PE or another condition.
DVT is a blood clot in a deep vein, usually in the leg, thigh, or pelvis and can also occur in the arm.1,4 A PE is a blood clot in the lungs and is the most serious condition that can be caused by DVT.1 This happens when a DVT clot, or part of it, breaks off and travels through the bloodstream to the lungs, reducing or cutting off blood supply. 1,4 PE can cause sudden death in about 25% of cases.3

It’s important for those experiencing symptoms that could be due to DVT or PE to talk to a healthcare provider right away by phone, online or in person. Seeking medical attention early may help reduce the chances of DVT or PE becoming more serious. In addition to speaking with a healthcare provider, individuals are encouraged to visit www.NoTimetoWait.com/dvt-pe-explained, where they can find additional information.

Dr. Jenice Baker, Assistant Medical Director of the Emergency Department and Attending Physician at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Camden NJ, will be available to discuss the No Time to Wait campaign and help educate viewers about DVT and PE symptoms and why it’s critical for those experiencing symptoms that could be due to DVT or PE to consult a healthcare provider.

Living with ulcerative colitis (UC) can make working, maintaining relationships and juggling family responsibilities difficult. A global survey of 1,254 gastroenterologists and 2,100 adults with a self-reported history of UC revealed both men and women experienced the impact of UC on day-to day life, including emotional wellbeing.1

Now, with the added challenges of navigating the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on emotional wellbeing is more important than ever.

Laurie Keefer, PhD, who is a psychologist with Mount Sinai Hospital’s IBD Center in New York City who specializes in the psychosocial care of patients with chronic digestive diseases, most notably Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis (UC). Allyson, who has a history of UC, to discuss the emotional impact of UC and share tips for those living with UC on how to have more effective conversations with their healthcare team. Both Dr. Keefer and Allyson have been compensated by Pfizer to appear in this interview today.

Before we start, it is important to note that results from the UC Narrative are not representative of all UC patients, and only reflect responses of those who took the survey. For more information about the survey limitations and methodology, visit talkinguc.com.

BIO: Dr Laurie Keefer is an academic health psychologist and the Director for Psychobehavioral Research within the Division of Gastroenterology. She specializes in the psychosocial care of patients with chronic digestive diseases, specifically inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn’s or ulcerative colitis. Dr. Keefer came to Mount Sinai in January 2016 from Chicago, IL to lead a subspecialty medical home for inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD).

The Mount Sinai IBD medical home, known as GRITT-IBD(TM) focuses on gaining resilience through transitions as they occur across the lifespan of patients living with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Dr Keefer’s clinical and research interests are in the area of IBD disease self-management, gut-directed hypnotherapy, resilience, the psychosocial care needs of emerging adults with chronic disease and cognitive-behavior therapy. She is a sought after speaker and mentor.
BIO

My name is Allyson and I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis (UC) in 2007 at the age of 29. In hindsight I am certain I had symptoms that went undiagnosed for years, if not back to childhood. My diagnosis and progression of my UC was quite rapid and debilitating, resulting in being bed ridden and hospitalized within less than a month. After 3 years of hospitalizations and a very poor quality of life, I made an emergent decision to have a 3-stage total colectomy. This process had profound impacts of my physical and emotional wellbeing, as well as self-image due to body changes, and I feel strongly about advocating for patients with UC. I feel I often went without a voice until I was able to learn to speak up for myself as I learned more about my UC. As there is no cure, I continue to manage my daily life in often challenging, or what would appear impossible situations to those without UC. I am resilient and strong in a way that I only learned through my UC journey. I live a fulfilling life that may require adjustments, and I am grateful for the opportunities to advocate.

Age is a state of mind, except when it comes to your immune system. On behalf of Pfizer, an official with the American Lung Association, a former U.S. surgeon general, and golf professional Jim Furyk discuss how older adults should find out if they need to be vaccinated against “pneumococcal pneumonia”.

August is National Immunization Awareness Month, yet the features are evergreen.

(In addition, Below is the SCRIPT if you would like to read it yourself for news!)

Let us know if and how you’re able to use these.

:60 Script for Dr. Edelman, American Lung Association
Age is a state-of-mind—except when it comes to your immune-system: Adults as young as 50 are at increased risk for serious infectious-diseases—like “pneumococcal pneumonia”—because of their aging immune-systems. A recent “Harris Poll”—conducted for the “American Lung Association” and “Pfizer”, of one-thousand U-S adults—found 85-percent of adults age-50 to -75 believe people their age are at risk for “pneumococcal pneumonia”. But, only half believe they’re personally at risk. Doctor Norm Edelman—senior scientific-advisor to the “Lung Association”…

“It’s estimated that a quarter-of-a-million Americans, over 50, are hospitalized, each year, with ‘pneumococcal pneumonia’—with an average hospital-stay of five days. Even otherwise-healthy and -active older-adults need to be aware of their increased risk—because of their aging immune-systems.”

If you’re 50 or older, talk to your doctor about your personal risk for “pneumococcal pneumonia”—and see if you’re up-to-date on your vaccinations. Learn more at “who-pneu”-dot-com; that’s “w-h-o-p-n-e-u”-dot-com. Brought to you by the “American Lung Association”, in partnership with “Pfizer”.

:60 Script for Dr. Regina Benjamin, former U.S. Surgeon General
Adults age-65-plus are at increased risk for vaccine-preventable diseases—like “pneumococcal pneumonia”—because our immune-systems weaken, as we age. Worse still, vaccination-rates among African-American adults are lagging—leaving them at greater risk for vaccine-preventable diseases, like flu, shingles, or “pneumococcal pneumonia”. Former Surgeon-General, Doctor Regina Benjamin, explains…

“African-Americans are more likely to suffer from certain chronic health-conditions—leaving us at increased risk for certain vaccine-preventable diseases. Despite this, far-fewer older African-Americans than their White counterparts report receiving preventive health-services—such as vaccinations. I urge all African-American adults age-65-plus to know their risks—and [to] think prevention: Maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle, wash your hands frequently, and talk to your doctor—to ensure that you’re up-to-date on all your vaccinations.”

This message was brought to you by “Pfizer”.

:60 Script for Jim Furyk, golf professional
Golf-professional, Jim Furyk [“fyur-ick”], has had his coach and father, Mike, by his side—throughout his impressive career. But, now that Mike’s getting older, Jim is encouraging him to be more proactive—when it comes to his health…

“I wouldn’t be near the golfer—or man—[that] I am today without my dad. And now, it’s time for me to coach him, about taking personal responsibility for his health. Just like overcoming the hazards along a golf-course, understanding your risk for potentially serious infectious-diseases—like ‘pneumococcal pneumonia’—can help you stay on-course.”

“Pneumococcal pneumonia” is a potentially serious and life-threatening illness. Even healthy adults over 65 are at increased risk—because our immune-system naturally weakens with age…

“Vaccines aren’t just for kids: As you and your parents age, consider the importance of adult-vaccination. And, if you’re 65 or older, speak with a doctor or pharmacist—to make sure [that] you’re up-to-date, on ‘C-D-C’-recommended vaccines.”

For more, visit “know-pneumonia”-dot-com; that’s “k-n-o-w-pneumonia”-dot-com. Sponsored by “Pfizer”.

As an actress, Kim Cattrall had “pretend” hot flashes on-screen before she ever experienced them in real life. “I thought I was prepared for menopause, hot flashes and more, but when my body started changing, I realized I still had questions. But the more I learned and listened to what my body was telling me, the more I relaxed, adjusted and realized I could manage this by working closely with my doctor,” said Cattrall. “That’s why I’ve partnered with Pfizer on Tune In To Menopause to share some of what I’ve learned and encourage all women to join me and ‘tune in’ to our bodies, and embrace menopause with style and as another fabulous chapter in our lives.”

Kim encourages women to define their own “menopause style” atTuneInToMenopause.com. Visitors can take an interactive quiz about their approach to menopause, and get a unique look into some of the changes they may experience (hot flashes and bone loss). For each quiz completed, Pfizer will donate $1 (up to $50,000) to Dress for Success, a not-for-profit organization that helps women get back to work and empowers women within the workforce. Women also may link to Kim’s Tune In playlist on Pandora® to hear music that may inspire them on their journey.

Studies show that up to 80 percent of women experience hot flashes due to menopause. In a survey commissioned by Pfizer, half of women experienced moderate-to-severe hot flashes.Menopausal women may also experience bone loss, which can lead to osteoporosis. In fact, approximately 50 percent of women in the U.S. age 50 and older may have low bone mass.

“Menopause is a natural part of the evolution of a woman’s life, and in my OB/GYN practice, I’ve found that there is not a ‘one size fits all’ approach to managing menopause,” said Dr. Patricia J. Sulak, professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Texas A&M College of Medicine. “While many women are aware of the more bothersome symptoms, like hot flashes, unseen changes like risk of bone loss are just as important to understand and recognize. I encourage all patients to pay attention to the changes in their body, stay educated, and have ongoing conversations with their healthcare professional.”

About Menopause
Menopause is a normal, natural event. It marks the permanent end of fertility and is usually confirmed when a woman has not menstruated for 12 consecutive months and it is not due to other medical causes. Menopause is associated with reduced functioning of the ovaries due to aging, resulting in lower levels of estrogens and other hormones. Changes in these hormones cause symptoms of menopause, which may include hot flashes and bone loss.

About Post-Menopausal Bone Loss
Lower levels of estrogens at the time of menopause are associated with rapid bone loss. Approximately 50 percent of women in the U.S. 50 years of age or older have low bone mass, putting them at risk for osteoporosis. Osteoporosis, the most common bone disease in humans, becomes a serious health threat in postmenopausal women.

Kim Cattrall would discuss her personal experience, she states “I know what it means to have a hot flash. I’m not talking about the pretend ones that I feigned as an actress on-screen, but the real deal – the ones that turn your face scarlet red and make you feel like you are diving into a boiling pot of water. Just like you, I have been there. And I am not ashamed to admit it.” Kim has partnered with Pfizer on Tune In To Menopause to share her personal experience during this time in her life.
