Every year on 21 September, the United Nations invites the world to mark the International Day of Peace. This year’s focus is on “Cultivating a culture of peace”.

In a world mired by conflict, inequalities, and discrimination, we must strive ever harder to promote dialogue, empathy, and human rights for all.

As we begin the 100-day countdown to Peace Day,let us plant the seeds for non-violence, justice, and hope.

Communities of color, especially African-American communities, are deeply suffering as they face violence, injustice, lack of access and inequality. This cannot stand. We must work together to take on and dismantle racism when and where we see it, and work toward more just, united, healthy, and peaceful communities. We all suffer when racism exists.

We applaud the many Philly organizations that are finding ways to create interactive, meaningful programming at this critical time. We welcome collaborators for future programs. Our sincere thanks to all who are helping others out there, even at risk to their own health.

Peace Day Philly will continue to stand against racism and for greater safety, justice and peace in Philadelphia communities and beyond.

Peace Day Philly promotes and collaborates on programming related to personal, local and/or global peace, on and around the United Nations International Day of Peace (“Peace Day”), SEPTEMBER 21.

Peace Day Philly was founded in 2011 by a small group of individuals and organizational representatives, including the UN Association of Greater Philadelphia, as a grassroots initiative. PDP became a formal non-profit in 2013. As of 2018, Peace Day Philly became a non-governmental organization (NGO) affiliated with the United Nations.

In 2011, Peace Day Philly hosted 3 free, diverse peace programs in Philadelphia. By 2013, there were well over 20 peace programs taking place annually during the week in which Peace Day falls, offered by a wide range of organizations and groups. In past years, children and youth have participated in peace activities in schools and libraries across the region, and the Philadelphia Police Department has offered numerous additional youth and community building programs in Philly neighborhoods.

Peace Day Philly offers and collaborates on programs, but many of the activities that make up each year’s activities are offered by Philly-region organizations based on their work as it relates to peace and justice. 20-60 Organizations are involved each year.

PEACE DAY PHILLY WORKS TO:
– ENCOURAGE a broad-base of organizations to use the platform of the United Nations International Day of Peace (observed worldwide on and around September 21) to offer and/or engage in an activity related to peace that is in keeping with their mission/goals.
– COLLABORATE with other organizations and groups to develop and present high-quality, content rich programs on a wide range of topics related to personal, local and/or global peace.
– PROVIDE a wide range of resources and links via our website and social media for organizations, groups and individuals to engage in Peace Day.
– ENGAGE civic offices, city Departments and leaders to use Peace Day Philly to forward ongoing safety enhancement and community resiliency work taking place year round.
– PROMOTE peace programs and activities – both local and global – throughout the year through community partnerships.
– SUSTAIN efforts and initiatives sparked by the International Day of Peace whenever possible.

The international traveler who once saw the world for 49 days from the vantage point of a cargo freighter, was born and raised in Philadelphia. She relocated to Costa Rica 30 years ago.

A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and Cornell, Homer has published her poetry and been interviewed on several podcasts, including that of Lisa Davis’s regional NPR program, Talk Healthy Today.

She has lived in Costa Rica for the past three decades, where she has taught languages and worked as a translator. For several years she penned a regularly published column, Local Color, for the English-language weekly, The Tico Times.

Homer is the author of three other books: Letters From The Pacific: 49 Days on a Cargo Ship, Journey to the Joie de Vivre, and The Magnificent Dr. Wao.

PEACE PLEASE delivers products and messages that promote peace and peaceful coexistence. Our goal is to help people find a visible means to express their hopes for the world. Our original three t-shirts (Lincoln, Peace on Earth and Jefferson) were born from and for the streets in October 2002. They were included in “Times of War – Signs of Peace,” an exhibition held in New York in 2003 showcasing the visual voice of peace marchers. More recently, starting in December 2011, the PEACE PLEASE designed and produced Peace Symbol Lights were featured in the “Light but not Light” installation, a collaboration between PEACE PLEASE and 0.00156 acres Gallery in New York.

PEACE PLEASE contributes monies from sales to groups that promote peace and coexistence, some of which you’ll find listed on the links page. Funds are additionally being used for the creation of an international peace channel. To direct the donation from your purchase specifically to one of the organizations listed, send us a separate email stating your wish and we will contribute the monies accordingly. On the message side we have a Gallery, presently featuring “People for Peace.” Our parent, The Peace Channel Network, Inc., also runs “Voices for Peace,” an area for anyone to leave messages about peace and coexistence and share ideas as to how we can best bring these ideals about. Add your voice – together we can make a difference.
