MvVO ART, creator of AD ART SHOW, held an Advertising Industry Opening Reception hosted by Havas New York in downtown Manhattan. The reception was the official kickoff to the AD ART SHOW 2022 going on May 1-31, 2022, at Westfield World Trade Center inside the Oculus.

Many artists from this year’s show, as well as some from previous years, attended the winners presentation, saw previews of the show on various screens, and enjoyed wine sponsored by Havas New York and Annex88 client Stags’ Leap Winery, one of Treasury Wine Estates’ properties, and hors d’oeuvres. Following the reception, guests were invited to the Oculus to watch the AD ART SHOW 2022 on the monumental screens.

Notable attendees included: Maria van Vlodrop, Laura Maness, Dan Lucey, Laura Skoler, Isaac Aden, Eric Shiner, Chanell Angeli, Parme Marin, Layla Nami, Lindsay Stein, Will Lewis, and Loris van Vlodrop.

During the reception, MvVO ART announced that Chanell Angeli had won first place in the AD ART SHOW 2022. Chanell Angeli received a Specialty Clio in Contemporary Art from the MvVO ART jury of collectors. Her work as a mixed-media artist of Caribbean descent draws on her heritage as well as her interest in the relationship between poetry and visual art to create immersive experiences that explore themes of the divine feminine and the African Diaspora. Her work is full of emotional depth and intelligence.

Parme Marin and Layla Nami were also named winners of the 2022 show. Parme Marin explores “La Peau” (the skin) by creating works of art out of leather, hair, and wood. Layla Nami’s vibrant imagery is influenced by Persian folktales, medieval tapestries, and illuminated manuscripts.

“The talent represented in the 2022 selection of 120 artists is extraordinary. When people comment on the diversity of our artists, I can only say that this is organic and reflects the creative people with roots in advertising and commercial design. The diversity of artistic talent is on display. Discover them daily on MvVO ART’s Instagram (@mvvoart)” said Maria van Vlodrop, MvVO ART CEO and Founder. In 2020, Maria van Vlodrop was named as a “Cultural Shaper” in Adweek’s annual Creative 100 List.

In 2018, MvVO ART debuted AD ART SHOW at Sotheby’s New York. The 2022 edition, now in its fifth year, brings art directly to people by converting an advertising platform—the massive digital screens at Westfield World Trade Center inside the Oculus in New York—into a public gallery space for an entire month. From May 1 to 31, 2022, the iconic Oculus, designed by Santiago Calatrava, will be transformed into an inspiring contemporary art destination.

The artists who are taking part have backgrounds in advertising/design or other related fields. They are following in the footsteps of Andy Warhol, Rene Magritte, and Edward Hopper, among others. Historically, some artists have made the leap, but the barriers remain; and the MvVO ART/AD ART SHOW opens the doors for these talented artists with direct connections to the art world in a celebration of artistic discovery open to all art lovers. It serves as a link between the art world and the advertising world.

In keeping with the historical connections between Art and Advertising, MvVO ART/AD ART SHOW includes influential figures in both contemporary Art and Advertising on the initial Selection Committee and Jury of Collectors. Laura Skoler, Board of Directors, New Museum, NYC, and the Daniel and Florence Guerlain Drawing Foundation, Paris chairs both the Selection Committee and the Jury. Eric Shiner, a noted curator and formerly the Director of the Andy Warhol Museum, serves on the selection committee. Demonstrating their support and enthusiasm for the artists in advertising, Pum Lefebure, Co-founder & Chief Creative Officer, Design Army and Nils Leonard, Creative Founder, Uncommon Creative Studio also serve on the selection committee

Artworks by MvVO ART/AD ART SHOW 2022 artists can be purchases on the MvVO ART gallery page on Artsy—the premiere site for Art collectors. To access the online gallery, go to www.mvvoart.com/artist-gallery.

“I’ve never been so nervous, ever, on a shoot.”

Not words that instill confidence in a Director of Photography, especially from the photographer you commissioned to photograph Angelina Jolie covered in honeybees for World Bee Day.

But I never doubted that Dan Winters was the right photographer for the job. He can manage a celebrity. And he’s a beekeeper himself, who got his first apiary at age 9. His obsession with insects continues, as reflected in these stunning bee portraits shot on the scanning electron microscope and the three hives he keeps as a self-proclaimed “gentleman beekeeper.”

Dan enlisted friend and beekeeper Konrad Bouffard on this project and together they ran several tests outside Dan’s studio in Austin. “I don’t remember ever being as thorough with the prep,” he said. But when the test shots using lemongrass to attract the bees weren’t working, Dan took a page from photo history.

He found an article that identified the entomologist who worked with Avedon on that 1981 image—and Konrad went on an “insane detective mission” to track him down.

Konrad did—and the 87-year-old entomologist gave Konrad Polaroids and letters from the original shoot—as well as the attractant they used for the bees. “Literally the same jar of queen pheromone!” Dan said. Dan and Konrad arrived on set early the morning of the shoot to test the 40-year-old queen bee pheromone before Angelina showed. It worked.

Walking on set, Angelina moved within six inches of a swarm ball of 60,000 of them. “She was some kind of fearless,” Dan says.

She didn’t wear bee protection, and came unshowered, because bees attack scents. “I told her, ‘You need to smell like an organism.’”

Angelina posed for 18 minutes, staying focused even as one bee crawled under her dress and was climbing up her thigh. “She never once even flinched,” Dan says. “There was never a moment of like, ‘Ooh,’ or anything. It was like she’d just kind of done this her whole life and this was sort of this laissez-faire experience for her. And I was incredibly impressed by that. I was the only person on the crew that didn’t wear any protection. I kind of did it in solidarity.“

Dan and Angelina set out to make an image that would honor the bees. And, after the prep and research, they collaborated on an image that pays homage as well to Avedon—both to his original Beekeeper photograph and to the technique used to create it. The (not so) Little Book of Surprises
By Deirdre Hade, William Arntz with Photography and Images by Endre Balogh

A Mystical Journey into the Beauty & Awe of Life,
And the Daily Power of Transcendence Through Surprise!
From Will Arntz, the Creator of What The Bleep?!

What is surprise in your life but an instant opportunity for transformation? A moment that can send you ascending into joy and wonder or spiraling into deep thought and life-changing new awareness.

An eye-catching beautiful and whimsical book The (not so)
Little Book of Surprises brings that home in-of course-surprising ways! A mystical journey into consciousness, an exploration of what touches our hearts, a glimmering reflection on nature and our selves, and plea for becoming our better angels are just some of the touchstones in store for readers as they experience the poetic exquisiteness of this gem.

This rumination on surprise comes courtesy of William Arntz, the creator and producer who surprised, confounded and delighted with his remarkable film What the Bleep Do We Know!? Now he teams with his wife, internationally renowned spiritual teacher and poet Deirdre Hade and award-winning photographer Endre Balogh to create something else quite special.

The (not so) Little Book of Surprises is anchored with Hade’s visionary and lyrical poetry skipping lightly about over the stunning images curated by Balogh. Each breathtaking page creates an emotional resonance with the reader…using surprise as the doorway to transformation and transcendence. The images in the book are part eye candy/part soul candy. They pile on a sensory experience that mounts the sense of surprise page by page.

All of the book’s creators began life in different fields-Arntz as a laser physicist working on “Star Wars” high energy lasers; Hade as a ballet dancer and choreographer, Balogh continues as an internationally regarded concert violinist. And through life’s mystery and surprise, they emerged as something else entirely, which makes them imminently qualified to bring forth a meditation in print on the gifts of surprise. For more information please visit: www.BookOfSurprises.com

Since her early years in Memphis, Tennessee, Deirdre Hade has been an artist and a visionary, writing poetry and conversing with the mystical worlds. As a ballet dancer and choreographer recognized by Robert Joffery, she performed throughout the country and founded the dance ensemble, “Celebrations to the Sacred.” At sixteen, when her mother was diagnosed with terminal breast cancer, Deirdre discovered the healing power of light, enabling her mother to live thirteen years longer than expected. As the founder of Radiance Healing and Meditation, Deirdre has guided people worldwide, teaching them to harness their own inner wisdom and healing potential. She is currently writing her story of life as a modern day mystic.

William Arntz started his professional career as a research laser physicist, working on “Star Wars” high energy lasers. He then moved on to software, writing “AutoSys”-an automated job control system currently in use by most Fortune 500 companies. He sold that company, retired, but then decided to make a film: creating, producing and directing What the BLEEP Do We Know!?, an exploration of spirituality, quantum physics, neurology and outrageous possibilities. The film and the companion book, with editions in over twenty languages, were international hits.

Endre Baloghis an internationally known concert violinist, having performed as a soloist with orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic and eminent musicians Zubin Mehta, Vladimir Horowitz and André Watts. He is also a sought- after photographic artist. The Professional Photographers of California named him “Number Two” among the “Top Ten Photographers” and he is one of only thirty five photographers worldwide to achieve “Diamond” status in the 2015 Professional Photographers of America International Competition.

What’s the magic of surprise? Notes’ Arntz in the foreword: “The ‘You’ before is different from the ‘You’ Afterwards.” And in The (not so) Little Book of Surprises there are 100+ pages of wonderment and surprise-an invitation to be very different when one closes the last page of the book. Potential topics of discussion:
•	The Power of Surprise in one’s life
•	How to keep life fresh and juicy in surprising ways
•	Mastering the art of being surprising to the world
•	Making surprise the gateway to your heart

Home to the Original Cuts of The Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind

George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film, the world’s oldest photography museum and one of the world’s oldest film archives, opened to the public in 1949 as an independent, non-profit museum. It combines the world’s leading collections of photography and film with the stately pleasures of the landmark Colonial Revival mansion and gardens that George Eastman called home from 1905 to 1932. The Museum is a National Historic Landmark. Mr. Eastman, the founder of Eastman Kodak Company, is heralded as the father of modern photography and motion picture film.

World-renowned for its photograph and motion picture archives, the Museum is also a leader in film preservation and photograph conservation, educating the top archivists and conservators from around the world.

Mr. Eastman (1854–1932) built his home at 900 East Avenue between 1902 and 1905. He created a unique urban estate complete with 10.5 acres of working farm land, formal gardens, greenhouses, stables, barns, pastures, and a 35,000-square-foot, 50-room Colonial Revival mansion with a fireproof structure made of reinforced concrete.

Mr. Eastman’s house presented a classical facade of decorative craftsmanship. Beneath this exterior were such modern conveniences as an electrical generator, an internal telephone system with 21 stations, a built-in vacuum cleaning system, a central clock network, an elevator, and a great pipe organ, which made the home itself an instrument, a center of the city’s rich musical life from 1905 until Eastman’s death in 1932.

Mr. Eastman’s will bequeathed his estate to the University of Rochester for 10 years. His close friend Rush Rhees, then president of the university, resided here until 1935, succeeded by the Valentine family. Following World War II, the university transferred the estate to a board of trustees, which formed to establish a museum of photography, attracting precious artifacts from around the world to a center of study, care, and exhibition.

The George Eastman House Museum of Photography was chartered in 1947. Today the Museum’s full name is George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film. The Museum’s mission from the outset was to collect, preserve, and present the history of photography and film. The Museum opened its doors to a diverse public audience in 1949, displaying its core collections in the former public rooms of Eastman’s house.

The Museum’s original collections–including the Medicus collection of Civil War photographs by Alexander Gardner, Eastman Kodak Company’s historical collection, and the invaluable, massive Gabriel Cromer collection from France–attracted significant additions over the next 40 years. Entire archives, corporate collections, and artists’ lifetime portfolios have been donated to the Eastman House, as well as a staggering assemblage of rare motion pictures and ephemera.

By 1984, the Museum’s holdings were considered among the world’s finest. However, with the collections growing at a rapid pace, the Museum increasingly suffered from its own success. With an increasing number of materials to store, protect, and study, space and financing became critical.

Between 1985 and 1988, more than $30 million was raised for capital improvement and collections care. Eastman Kodak Company led the way, challenging the public with an endowment gift worth more than $17 million. Public contributions of $12.5 million provided for the construction of a state-of-the-art archives building, including a study center and exhibition galleries. The archives building is 73,000 square feet of climate- controlled vault, archival, research, and gallery space, much of it built below ground, with restored historic gardens above.

For the first time in its history, the Museum had attained physical and financial security for its precious materials and the ability to offer unlimited access for a range of audiences. The new facility opened to the public in January 1989, and now houses more than 400,000 photographs and negatives; 28,000 films and more than 4 million film stills; 53,000 publications; and more than 25,000 pieces of technology.

Also as part of the capital improvements, nearly $2 million was devoted to an exacting restoration of Mr. Eastman’s house and grounds. Using vintage photographs and other historical evidence, more than 85 percent of the original furnishings and virtually all of the complex decorative interior were returned or restored during the three-year process. Reopened to the public in January 1990, the Eastman House is a biographical treatment of Eastman’s estate as a reflection of his unique life. Four of Mr. Eastman’s formal gardens have been restored, and the remaining areas of the grounds will be restored or adapted to Museum’s needs.

Other museum programs and facilities were significantly improved during this period. Second floor galleries in the mansion document Mr. Eastman’s life and times; the Discovery Room, a popular hands-on education department program, enjoys expanded facilities in a wing of the second floor; a lecture hall has been renovated as a multimedia theater in memory of General Edward Peck Curtis; and the Dryden Theatre, a motion-picture venue with 535 seats, was renovated in order to continue its tradition of film exhibition, specializing in restored film classics.

The Gallery focuses on contemporary art with a strong focus in fine art photography: our mission is to showcase visionary artists to an international audience. With an educational program being developed, including guest lecturers varying from artists, critics, curators and professors, the Gallery will serve as an important platform for exchanges within the art community. We aim to become a pivotal resource for artists and collectors, as well as the other individuals that comprise the visual arts community. The Joy Wai Gallery journey is an exciting one as we continue to enjoy our development.

About Joy Wai: Joy Wai is the founder and curator of the Gallery and goes by the motto, “Art is Life and Life is Art”.
Ms. Wai grew up and learned Chinese Painting in her grandfather’s studio, Hui Xiao Tong, a great artist and remarkable collector. He co-founded The Beijing National Art College and was her first art teacher and mentor in life. Today, her business practices in the art world have made her many ties throughout China and Hong Kong.

Joy describes her life as fragmented, “its just like I have had four lives. Sometimes the distance and time between them make me feel that these lives are disconnected. It is only art that makes my whole life connected, stronger and richer.” She believes that playing and practicing with the creation of art makes life rich and beautiful. The vibrancy of New York’s art world has allowed her to follow her dream of creating a gallery space.
