Cities around the world face a daunting challenge in the era of climate change: Supercharged rainstorms are turning streets into rivers, flooding subway systems and inundating residential neighborhoods, often with deadly consequences.

Kongjian Yu, a landscape architect and professor at Peking University, is developing what might seem like a counterintuitive response: Let the water in.

“You cannot fight water,” he said. “You have to adapt to it.”

Instead of putting in more drainage pipes, building flood walls and channeling rivers between concrete embankments, which is the usual approach to managing water, Mr. Yu wants to dissipate the destructive force of floodwaters by slowing them and giving them room to spread out.

Mr. Yu calls the concept “sponge city” and says it’s like “doing tai chi with water,” a reference to the Chinese martial art in which an opponent’s energy and moves are redirected, not resisted.

“It’s a whole philosophy, a new way of dealing with water,” he said.

Through his Beijing-based company, Turenscape, one of the world’s largest landscape architecture firms, Mr. Yu has overseen the development of hundreds of landscaped urban water parks in China where runoff from flash floods is diverted to soak into the ground or be absorbed into constructed wetlands.

Mr. Yu said growing up in a village in Zhejiang Province toward the end of the Cultural Revolution showed him how earlier generations in rural China had “made friends with water.” Farmers in his region built terraces, berms and ponds to direct and to store excess water during the rainy season.

That stood in sharp contrast to the urban landscapes in modern China. Traditionally, cities in China would set aside areas capable of absorbing floodwaters. But such nature-friendly urban design largely ended with the Industrial Revolution, Mr. Yu said. More recently, millions of acres have been paved over to build cities, some of them rising up virtually overnight.

“We’ve been using the conventional drainage infrastructure for 200 years and we haven’t solved the flooding problem,” he said, noting that much of China has a monsoon climate subject to extremely heavy bursts of rain that pose an increasing hazard as climate change advances. That’s because warm air can hold more moisture, resulting in heavier rainstorms.

Currently, 65 percent of urban areas in China experience some degree of flooding each year, according to Mr. Yu. The country is currently the world’s largest producer of greenhouse gases. The United States is the largest historical emitter .

“The concrete drainage systems that came here from the West just can’t handle it,” Mr. Yu said. “We need a new solution.”

The sponge city program was formally inaugurated by President Xi Jinping in 2015 with pilot projects in 16 Chinese cities and has since expanded to more than 640 sites in 250 municipalities around the country.

You can see the concept in Houtan Park, a mile-long strip of greenery along the Huangpu River in Shanghai that Mr. Yu designed on a former industrial site.

Terraces planted with bamboo and native forbs and grasses are bisected by wooden walkways that zigzag between ponds and constructed wetlands. The wetlands filter water, slow the river’s flow and provide habitat for waterfowl and spawning fish.

The goal, at least on paper, is that by 2030, 70 percent of the rain that falls on China’s sponge cities during extreme weather events should be absorbed locally rather than accumulate in the streets.

Whether enough land can be converted is a key question.

Mr. Yu, who studied landscape architecture in China and at Harvard, with hand-drawn landscape designs. Credit…Mark Schiefelbein/Associated Press

Edmund Penning-Rowsell, a research associate at the University of Oxford who focuses on water security, said the scale of the sponge city projects would have to be huge to cope with flooding on their own. “Take New York City,” he said. “How many Central Parks would you need to absorb this kind of problem? You’d probably need half of Manhattan.”

Zhengzhou, in northeastern China on the banks of the Yellow River, was an enthusiastic early adopter of the sponge city concept, spending hundreds of millions of dollars building related projects from 2016 to 2021. But torrential rains inundated much of the city in July 2021, creating scenes of destruction and killing hundreds, including at least 14 in a subway tunnel.

Why were the floods so disastrous in Zhengzhou? Mr. Yu said some of the money earmarked for sponge projects was diverted to other programs and that the land set aside for them was insufficient. If permeable surfaces or green spaces make up 20 to 40 percent of a city’s area, he said, “you can virtually solve the problem of urban inundation.”

Niall Kirkwood, a professor of landscape architecture at Harvard who has known Mr. Yu for years, acknowledged that it can be difficult, and sometimes impossible, to convert land in city centers that have already been densely built. Still, he said, Mr. Yu’s impact as a innovator has been incalculable.

“He’s created a clear and elegant idea of enhancing nature, of partnership with nature that everyone, the man on the street, the mayor of a city, an engineer, even a child, can understand,” Professor Kirkwood said.

Where large tracts of land are not available, sponge city projects are replacing concrete and asphalt with permeable pavement, installing green roofs and creating trenches called bioswales that channel storm-water runoff and use vegetation to filter out debris and pollution.

The sponge city concept is not unique to China. One of Mr. Yu’s projects abroad is the Benjakitti Forest Park, a maze of ponds, trees and miniature islands in Bangkok that was opened to the public in 2022 and occupies more than hundred acres on the site of a former tobacco factory.

Separately, in 2007 the Dutch government began a program called Room for the River that consists of more than 30 projects around four rivers, including the Rhine. The idea is to restore natural floodplains in key areas around sites that need protection. The Danish capital, Copenhagen, is using “floodable parks” that turn into temporary ponds during heavy rains. Philadelphia and Malmo, Sweden, also have projects.

The site of Benjakitti Forest Park in Bangkok in 2020.Credit…Courtesy The Cultural Landscape Foundation

The park, which was rehabilitated by Mr. Yu’s firm, in 2022.Credit…Lauren DeCicca for The New York Times

In addition to flood control, these projects have the advantage of being an inexpensive way to recharge local aquifers and a low-tech adaptation to help overheated city neighborhoods, because evaporating water has a cooling effect.

John Beardsley, the curator of the Oberlander International Landscape Architecture Prize, which was awarded to Mr. Yu last year, echoed Professor Kirkwood, saying Mr. Yu’s impact on policy in China, a country that has been more likely to imprison environmental activists than take their messages to heart, has been astonishing.

Mr. Beardsley attributes this to Mr. Yu’s adroit political skills and infectious enthusiasm, as well as the Chinese government’s powerful incentive to appear to be addressing the problem of urban flooding, which has grown alarmingly in recent years.

“Kongjian has managed to be very critical of the government’s environmental policies while still maintaining his practice and his academic appointments,” he said. “He’s both brave and deft in this regard, threading a very narrow needle.”

“Sponge cities isn’t a total solution, but it makes a significant impact,” Mr. Beardsley said. “I mean, we need to start doing something.”

Courtesy The Cultural Landscape Foundation

Testing blood glucose, also known as blood sugar, is an essential part of your diabetes care plan.

Depending on your current condition, you may need to visit your doctor several times a year for formal testing, according to the American Diabetes Association. You may also need to reach out to your doctor for preventive testing, such as cholesterol checks and eye exams.

While staying in touch with your doctor is important for staying on top of your treatment plan, you can and should test your blood sugar on your own as long as your healthcare team advises you to.

Self-monitoring your blood glucose may be vital to your treatment. Testing your own levels allows you to learn how to manage your blood sugar regardless of the time of day or where you are.

Learn how these tests work and talk with your doctor about the benefits of self-monitoring.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)Trusted Source, typical blood glucose ranges between 70 to 99 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) while fasting and 140 mg/dL or below after eating.

Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) is below 70 mg/dL, and high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) is well above 140 mg/dL.

By maintaining glucose at an average range, you may help prevent diabetes complications. According to the CDCTrusted Source, these include:

***September is National Cholesterol Education Month***

Sometimes people must face the toughest opponents in life —and for approximately 30 million Americans with known heart disease, bad cholesterol is a formidable challenger. 1-3

Lowering bad cholesterol and keeping it low takes a solid game plan. With September marking the kick-off of the football season and National Cholesterol Education Month, it’s the perfect time for people to check in with their doctor to make sure they have all the right plays to manage their bad cholesterol.

The most common type of heart disease, called known heart disease, is caused by consistent high levels of bad cholesterol (LDL-C), fats and other substances in the blood, that leads to the buildup of plaque on the walls of the arteries.4 This buildup can lead to major cardiac events, like a heart attack or stroke, and blockages in the arteries causing chest pain.4 That’s why it’s important for people with known heart disease to lower bad cholesterol and keep it low; yet even with what may seem to be the best game plan, only 20 percent of people with known heart disease who take statins to lower their bad cholesterol achieve their recommended cholesterol goal.1

Tactics to defeat a tough opponent need to be constantly assessed and adjusted to help ensure success – and the same is true for managing bad cholesterol. While you can’t control factors like genetics or age, there are still ways you can find success with the right lifestyle modifications and working with your doctor the find the right treatment plan.

Dr. Boone, President, CEO, and Medical Director of the Boone Heart Institute to discuss what plays your viewers or listeners should incorporate into their game plan to help maintain their heart health this National Cholesterol Education Month and beyond. He will talk about the importance of cholesterol management, ways to lower it, and have details about a first of its kind treatment approved by the FDA to lower bad cholesterol.

Clearwater is excited to welcome David Toman, who comes with over 25 years of experience in nonprofit leadership, most recently as the Vice President of Operations and Chief Financial Officer at the Mohonk Preserve. Toman’s non-profit career began in the public accounting world; his love of nature guided him to the Delaware Nature Society where he held the position of Associate Director of Business & Finance for 12 years.

https://www.clearwater.org/

As Clearwater’s Executive Director, Toman will be responsible for supervising all programs and operations, including implementing Clearwater’s recently adopted strategic plan in concert with board and staff. His work will encompass strengthening relationships with Hudson Valley partners and broadening both Clearwater’s base of support and the impact of its activities.

David hopes to draw from his combined experience in environmental advocacy, nature education, public engagement, and business acumen to help guide Clearwater as they address the current challenges to the health of our environment.

“Pete Seeger had a wonderful vision that a beautiful boat and music could bring people together to care for the Hudson River. Clearwater has played an important, unique, and necessary role in the ongoing efforts to protect the river” said Toman. “I am so fortunate to be able to join a dedicated group of people working towards this cause, and it will be a rewarding occupation knowing that I am serving this important mission.”

In his spare time, David enjoys paddling on local waterways, nature hikes with his Karelian Bear Dog, and listening to great music with his family, where they reside in New Paltz, NY.

Toman will replace Acting Executive Director Steve Stanne, who has kept the organization on course since July 2019. Stanne provided much needed stability for Clearwater as they navigated the challenges of the pandemic. Stanne will continue as Clearwater’s Board President and looks forward to working with its new executive director.

“With David’s arrival, Clearwater will voyage into the new year with optimism, buoyed by the continued generosity of our supporters, steered by talented and hard-working staff and crew, and following a course charted by the board’s adoption of our new strategic plan.”
Clearwater thanks Steve for his years of service, devotion to the organization, and commitment to the health of the Hudson River and its valley.

Welcome aboard, David!

Today, we’re celebrating the profound legacy of Pete Seeger, on the eighth anniversary of his death.

For more than half a century, Pete championed the environment and for decades before he came to the Hudson Valley, social justice. In 1966, when the Hudson River was rank with raw sewage, toxic chemicals, oil pollution and bacteria, too anoxic to support fish life over many miles of its length, he announced plans to “build a boat to save the river.” In 1969, two thousand people attended the launching of the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater.

“Pete Seeger dedicated his life to leading a revolution against injustice. He sang for workers rights, civil rights, for environmental awareness; he built the sloop Clearwater to save the Hudson River from pollution. He succeeded in bringing social consciousness to these causes and helped to create historic reforms that made this world a better place,” said Captain Nick Rogers in 2017.

Over fifty years later, Clearwater is recognized for its unparalleled environmental education programs, through which hundreds of thousands of watershed residents of all ages have investigated the ecology, history, and environmental challenges of the Hudson Valley. These award-winning programs aim to create the next generation of environmental leaders.

Pete’s dedication to environmental and social justice has guided the organization through decades of advocacy through education. For years, he would show up (sometimes unannounced) at local elementary schools, armed with his iconic banjo to sing about the river with students. These school sing-a-longs remain treasured memories that the now parents of 4th graders share with us often during Sailing Classroom Programs.

Due to Pete’s leadership around equity and inclusivity, Clearwater has served for 4 decades as one of the only tall ships in the country to have a strong line of female (and female presenting) Captains and crew who found Clearwater as one of the only safe spaces with opportunities for advancement and respect in the industry. For 20 years, Clearwater has offered Youth Empowerment Programs to break down the barriers historically marginalized groups in the communities we serve face to the river and to sailing. Our advocacy team has played a critical role in coalition building with concerned community members, state, and federal regulatory agencies in the fight for clean water; resulting in two recent long awaited triumphs for Hudson Valley residents: the closure of Indian Point, marking the end of the Nuclear Power generation at the plant, and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s denial of Danskammer proposed expansion of the fracked gas plant.

As we grow, learn, and create change together here at Clearwater, one thing becomes clear, and Captain Nick outlined it wonderfully, “We find ourselves fighting harder than ever to preserve his legacy as we see the patterns of history repeating themselves as we walk these same roads, fight these same fights, march in Washington D.C., and protest peacefully to protect our rights and our rivers. Pete has done more than inspire us, he taught us to use our voices, to unite, and to never stop fighting.”

Pete Seeger was a giant, worldwide, though he never wanted to be made out to be an idol. He made all us feel like we were a part of he and Toshi’s chosen family. He and his friends played music to get us together to raise awareness about the river, they inspired us to play music together, share memories, and mobilize against issues of social injustice in our own communities. He demonstrated that there is no age too old to begin advocating for what’s right,

WASHINGTON — The latest plans by the nations of the world to tackle climate change over the next decade fall far short of what’s needed to avert a dangerous rise in global temperatures, according to a United Nations report released Tuesday.

In the run-up to a major U.N. climate summit in Glasgow next week, a number of governments have updated their pledges under the Paris climate agreement to do more to curb their planet-warming emissions between now and 2030. They include Argentina, Britain, Canada, the European Union, South Africa and the United States.

But those new pledges, the report found, would collectively produce just one-seventh of the additional emissions cuts needed this decade to help limit total global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, or 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit, above preindustrial levels. That’s the threshold beyond which scientists say the dangers of global warming — such as deadly heat waves, water shortages, crop failures and ecosystem collapse — grow immensely. (The world has already warmed 1.1 degrees Celsius since preindustrial times.)

And that assumes every country actually follows through on its promises. The report found that many governments still haven’t put in place policies or laws to achieve their stated near-term goals.

“The world has to wake up to the imminent peril we face as a species,” Inger Andersen, the executive director of the United Nations Environment Program, said in a statement. “To stand a chance of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, we have eight years to almost halve greenhouse gas emissions: eight years to make the plans, put in place the policies, implement them and ultimately deliver the cuts. The clock is ticking loudly.”

The report estimates that even if countries achieve their newest round of near-term climate promises, known as Nationally Determined Contributions, the world would be on track to warm roughly 2.7 degrees Celsius by 2100, compared with preindustrial levels. That broadly aligns with what outside analyses have found.

That much warming would drastically increase the risk of heat waves, droughts, flooding and wildfires across the globe in the years to come, scientists have warned. The United Nations Secretary General António Guterres recently called such an outcome “catastrophic.”

In Glasgow, world leaders are expected to discuss accelerating efforts to tackle climate change. But the latest analysis suggests that progress so far has been uneven.

In 2015, nearly 200 nations signed the Paris climate agreement, which for the first time required every country to submit a plan for curbing its planet-warming emissions. Countries were free to set their own goals, and the initial round of pledges was vastly inadequate to achieve the agreement’s stated goal of keeping global warming “well below” 2 degrees and potentially as low as 1.5 degrees.

The treaty’s architects hoped that, over time, nations would strengthen their climate pledges as momentum for action grew. Ahead of Glasgow, the United Nations asked for a fresh round of more ambitious national plans that stretch out to at least 2030.

Some countries have offered to do more. President Biden, for instance, pledged that the United States would cut its greenhouse gas emissions 50 percent below 2005 levels by 2030, roughly double its previous goal. Britain, Canada, Japan and the European Union have also vowed to cut emissions more deeply over this decade.

But other major emitters, including India, Turkey and Saudi Arabia have not submitted new short-term pledges as of yet. And the report found that some of the updated pledges, such as those from Russia or Australia, were unlikely to lead to any actual emissions reductions between now and 2030.

China, the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases, remains a wild card. Although the country has not yet officially updated its Paris agreement pledge, President Xi Jinping has said that China’s emissions could peak before its previous target of 2030, while the country plans to accelerate its development of renewable and nuclear power.

If those targets are met, the U.N. report found, that could nudge down expected future emissions further, though the world would remain sharply off track from its Paris agreement goals. Environmentalists have called on China to do far more to rein in its appetite for coal, the dirtiest of all fossil fuels.

The new report also warns that even these new climate pledges are only as good as the policies that back them up. That is still a major question mark.

The European Union, for instance, has proposed sweeping new climate legislation — including stricter caps on industrial emissions, new targets for electric vehicles and a border tax on carbon-intensive imports — to achieve its goal of slashing emissions 55 percent below 1990 levels by 2030. But those proposals still need approval from all 27 member states, and many remain contentious with industry groups.

In the United States, the Biden administration is still struggling to clarify exactly how it will meet its pledge, since major climate legislation has not been approved by Congress. One recent analysis found that the country might be able to meet its target with a combination of generous tax incentives for wind, solar and other clean energy, tough regulations to restrict pollution from power plants and automobile tailpipes, and a slew of climate laws enacted by states. But none of those actions are yet assured.

On top of that, most countries have largely squandered the chance for a “green recovery” in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, the report said. While governments spent more than $16 trillion on stimulus measures over the past year, they largely focused on reviving the traditional fossil-fuel dependent parts of their economies as quickly as possible, with less than one-fifth of recovery funds used to promote low-carbon alternatives. As a result, global emissions are expected to rebound sharply this year after declining in 2020.

The new U.N. report also noted that more than 50 countries have now adopted formal goals to reach “net zero” emissions, which is essentially a promise to stop adding greenhouse gases to the atmosphere by a certain date. The United States has vowed to get to net zero by 2050. China says it will aspire to do so by 2060. This week, Saudi Arabia unveiled a net zero goal.

In theory, those goals could have a powerful effect. The report estimates that if countries all followed through, the world could potentially limit global warming to around 2.2 degrees Celsius by 2100.

But it’s unclear how plausible these goals actually are. Many net zero pledges remain vague, the report notes, and they are often inconsistent with the slow pace of emission cuts that many nations are planning over the next decade.

“There is an urgent need to back these pledges up with near-term targets and actions that give confidence that net zero emissions can ultimately be achieved,” the report said.

The report offers several suggestions for how to close the “emissions gap” — the gulf between current plans and the actions needed to avoid a sharp rise in temperatures. For instance, countries could do far more to cut emissions of methane, a potent greenhouse gas that often leaks out of oil and gas facilities and is created by livestock production and landfills. Much of this methane could be captured or reduced at low cost, the report notes, such as through repairing pipeline leaks or reducing food waste.

There are a variety of reasons why treatments fail, and patients need to work with their healthcare team to explore their options if treatment failure occurs.
Herewith tips for patients, are Dr. Michael Mauro, (More-oh) and Karen, who is living with chronic myeloid leukemia, or CML.
BIO:DR. MICHAEL MAURO:
•	Michael Mauro, MD, Professor of Medicine, Member and Attending Physician and Leader of the Myeloproliferative Neoplasms Program, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, NY
o	Dr. Mauro’s clinical expertise is in treating patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), as well as other myeloproliferative disorders, including myelofibrosis, polycythemia and thrombocytosis. In practice, he offers in-depth explanation regarding diagnoses and therapy options, and is a proponent of active partnerships with his patients to personalize decision-making and monitoring. He is a board-certified hematologist and leader of the Myeloproliferative Neoplasms Program within the Leukemia Service at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC). Before joining Memorial Sloan Kettering, Dr. Mauro was on the faculty of Oregon Health and Sciences University for 13 years. There, he directed the CML clinical trial program. He completed both residency and fellowship training at New York-Presbyterian Hospital / Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City.
o	Location: Practices in both Manhattan (NYC) and Montvale, NJ campuses of MSKCC
o	Specialty/Areas of Focus: Chronic Myeloid Leukemia; Myelofibrosis; Polycythemia; Thrombocytosis, Other Myeloproliferative Disorders
o	Education: MD, Dartmouth Medical School
o	Board Certifications: Hematology
BIO:KAREN L.
o Bio: Karen is a teacher, former runner turned yogi, wife and mother of two from Eden Prairie, Minnesota.
o Journey with CML:
§ When she began losing excessive weight and noticed a weakness in her legs during runs, she initially attributed these symptoms to turning 40 years old. Eventually she decided to visit her doctor, but her doctor was not concerned and told her to come back in a few months if she was still experiencing the same symptoms.
§ A few months later, Karen returned to her doctor for an ultrasound, which revealed her spleen was enlarged. Following a blood test, a nurse called Karen and told her it was suspected she had blood cancer and urged Karen to come straight to the hospital. The nurse expressed concerns about her potentially being at risk for a stroke. After further testing, it was confirmed that Karen had chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Karen spent several days in the hospital to help regulate the CML. After she was released from the hospital, Karen started taking a daily medication to help control the CML. Eventually Karen was able to return to teaching and her usual activities.
§ Following her initial diagnosis, Karen developed a genetic mutation that caused her treatment for CML to stop working. Since there were no available treatment options effective against the mutation, Karen enrolled in a clinical trial and responded well to the treatment she was given.
§ Today,Karen remains on the medication she took in the clinical trial and is stillteaching.
Uses His Voice to Help Others Like Him Who Struggle With a Chronic and Potentially Debilitating Disease

Dan Reynolds, lead singer of the multi-platinum, Grammy Award-winning band, Imagine Dragons, has earned legions of fans worldwide with sold-out tours and a string of chart-topping songs including “Radioactive” and “Thunder.”

While the band dominates the charts, Dan has been living with ankylosing spondylitis (AS)—a painful disease that most people probably aren’t familiar with—for more than a decade. Dan was diagnosed with AS in his early 20s, and three of his brothers also have AS.

Dan continues his efforts to make a difference in the lives of others by supporting several causes, including his work as an advocate for the AS community. Recently, Reynolds has been working with Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation to launch Monster Pain in the AS, a national campaign to raise awareness of unexplained back pain that may be AS.

For Dan, unexplained back pain is personal. After years of living with intense and unexplained back pain, Dan finally found the right doctor, a rheumatologist, who helped him find answers and a treatment plan that worked for him. He says this was “the greatest feeling in the world.”

This is why Dan is speaking publicly about his AS, in hopes of encouraging others living with persistent, unexplained back pain to seek diagnosis and care. Some 2.7 million people in the United States are thought to have AS and related conditions.1 But because it’s underdiagnosed, the numbers may be even higher.

Reynolds talks about his journey, the challenges living with unexplained back pain that may be AS, and how to find help. Reynolds will be joined by rheumatologist [Dr. Hillary Norton, who also has AS,] to share the signs and symptoms, her unique perspective on the disease, and the importance of getting a correct diagnosis.
