Let’s be real: our world is trashed. The average American produces 4.9 pounds of trash per day, which reaches nearly 1,800 pounds of trash per person every year.¹ Far too much of this trash ends up in our natural environment.

Trash that isn’t disposed of properly carries toxic chemicals that contaminate waterways, harm wildlife, and put human health at risk.² But, together, we can help clean it up.

EARTHDAY‍.ORG launched The Great Global Cleanup six years ago to fight for a world where cleanups are no longer necessary. We are still working towards this goal, highlighting the need for policies that hold polluters accountable, focusing on the detrimental effects of plastic production, and protecting human health.

You can be part of the effort by joining a cleanup this spring. Find one near you on our map, or organize and register your own.

Less than 10% of our plastic is actually recycled, the rest incinerated, sent to landfills, or ending up in other environments.³ For this reason, and the harmful effects plastic production has on human health, EARTHDAY‍.ORG is demanding a 60% reduction in plastic production by 2040. In the meantime, we are making an effort to clean up all the plastic waste that hasn’t been disposed of properly.

March 18th is Global Recycling Day, a day meant to celebrate the role of recycling in protecting our planet. But let’s be clear: plastic recycling has never lived up to its promises. 

For decades, the petrochemical industry has pushed the lie that plastic can be endlessly recycled, keeping us locked in a cycle of overconsumption. But globally, less than 9% of all plastic has been recycled.¹ The rest? It’s burned, thrown in landfills, or pollutes our oceans, breaking down into microplastics that infiltrate our food, water, and bodies.

While we’ve been told that tossing plastic into the blue bin was enough, corporations have ramped up plastic production – global plastic waste is set to TRIPLE by 2060.² Recycling was never the solution; it was the distraction.

The real solution? Cutting plastic production at the source. That’s why we urge you to sign our petition calling on world leaders to commit to a binding and effective Global Plastics Treaty.

World Environment Day [WED] was established by the UN General Assembly in 1972 on the first day of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment, resulting from discussions on the integration of human interactions and the environment. Two years later, in 1974 the first WED was held with the theme “Only One Earth”. Even though WED celebration have been held annually since 1974, in 1987 the idea for rotating the center of these activities through selecting different host countries began.

For almost five decades, World Environment Day has been raising awareness, supporting action, and driving change. Here is a timeline of key accomplishments in WEDs’ history:

The theme for 2018 is “Beat Plastic Pollution”. The host nation is India. The theme for the World Environment Day 2018, “Beat Plastic Pollution”. By choosing this Theme, it is aimed that people may strive to changes in their everyday lives to reduce the heavy burden of plastic pollution. People should be free from the over-reliace on single-use or disposables, as they have severe environmental consequences. We should liberate our natural places, our wildlife – and our own health from plastics.

The plastic pink flamingo was designed in 1957 by Don Featherstone while working for Union Products, and has become an icon of pop culture,[1] that won him the Ig Nobel Prize for Art in 1996. It has even spawned a lawn greeting industry where flocks of pink flamingos are installed on a victim’s lawn in the dark of night. After the release of John Waters’s 1972 movie Pink Flamingos,[2] plastic flamingos came to be the stereotypical example of lawn kitsch.[1]

Many imitation products have found their way onto front lawns and store shelves since then; those “official” pink flamingos made by Union Products from 1987 (the 30th anniversary of the plastic flamingo) until 2001 can be identified by the signature of Don Featherstone located on the rear underside. These official flamingos were sold in pairs, with one standing upright and the other with its head low to the ground, “feeding”. Sometime after Featherstone’s retirement in 2000, Union Products began producing birds without the signature. In December 2001, the Annals of Improbable Research (bestowers of the Ig Nobel prize) teamed up with the Museum of Bad Art to protest this omission in the form of a boycott.[3] Union Products, of Leominster, Massachusetts, stopped production of pink flamingos on November 1, 2006.

HMC International LLC[edit] However, HMC International LLC, a subsidiary of Faster-Form Corporation, purchased the copyright and plastic molds of Featherstone’s original plastic flamingos in 2007. HMC sub-contracted production of the flamingos to Cado Manufacturing, Inc., a blow-molder located in Fitchburg, Massachusetts who specialized in this type of production.[4] In 2010, Cado Manufacturing purchased the copyrights and the entire Union Products product line, including the pink flamingo, from HMC. Cado continues to manufacture the Union Products line, and production of the pink flamingo has increased in recent time.

In this short video, many U.S. communities from coast to coast that currently have public recycling programs in place are cited. Each of these communities listed report that public space recycling programs either make money or save money for their community treasuries as they make it easier for people to fully recycle unwanted bottles, cans and containers while away from home.

In this lighthearted look at recycling in public places, a consumer finds herself looking for places to properly dispose of her empties. When there is no place in public to recycle, shes quick to show how she saves the empty containers until shes home, said Tom Lauria, IBWA Vice President of Communications. At no time does she simply throw her empty containers away in regular trash receptacles. As title explains, Every Bottle Counts when it comes to thoughtful recycling.

IBWA and Bottled Water Matters decided to produce this video because we all have a role to play in expanding, and benefiting from, more public space recycling, Mr. Lauria said. Consumers should know they have the ability to make public recycling bins happen in their communities and that their cities and towns can benefit financially from making the effort to capture and recycle PET plastic, glass, aluminum and other recyclable materials.
