Over 5,300+ Actions Planned from Sept 21-Oct 2 to ‘End War, Poverty, Racism and Environmental Destruction’ as part of Campaign Nonviolence

Nationwide – Between September 21 and October 2, 2025, tens of thousands of people will participate in over 5,300+ nonviolent actions to protest violence, war, poverty, racism and environmental destruction as part of the 12^th annual Campaign Nonviolence Action Days.

Stretching between the International Day of Peace (Sept 21) to the International Day of Nonviolence (Oct 2), the annual effort rallies numerous national, international, and local groups to ‘build a culture of peace and active nonviolence, free from war, poverty, racism, and environmental destruction’.

Amidst concerns about gun violence, mass shootings, political violence, climate crisis, rising authoritarianism, war and genocide, Campaign Nonviolence brings people together in solidarity to work for an end to violence in all its forms. Local groups work to dismantle direct, structural, and systemic forms of violence using the tools of active nonviolence. Each group takes action on a different aspect of the broad vision, addressing issues such as immigration, discrimination, environmental destruction, health, poverty and more.

Campaign Nonviolence organizers affirm and advance the many viable nonviolent alternatives that exist, such as community safety teams, conflict resolution skills, peacebuilding, demilitarization, racial justice, restorative practices, self care, sustainability, renewable energy, living wages, civil resistance, and much more.

For 2025, people are invited to join the theme of “practicing nonviolence toward self, others, world, and earth”. The campaign calls for a range of nonviolent actions, including self care and wellness (self), community safety teams and violence de-escalation trainings (others), protests and visibility actions (world), and divestment from fossil fuels and weapons (earth). Two additional calls invite people to bring anti-militarism and anti-war leaflets to International Day of Peace events and to hold nonviolence teach-ins on Oct 2, the International Day of Nonviolence.

Campaign Nonviolence was launched September 2014 with 230 nonviolent actions in every state in the nation. In 2024, over 5000 actions took place across the United States and around the world. It is coordinated by Pace e Bene Nonviolence Service, a 36-year-old nonprofit that promotes nonviolence. More than 5,337 actions and events are planned for 2025 with more expected to be added in the lead-up to Sept 21.

The early 20th century was unforgiving on many women. Writer Celia Ryker’s grandmother was one such woman who had more than her fair share of a hard life. Ryker has written a powerful, insightful novel (Augusta) based on the exploits and overwhelming challenges her grandmother faced during the Depression.
Raised on a hard-knock farm in Arkansas and married off to the father of one of her classmates at the age of 13, lead-character Augusta was not set up for a life of bliss. Then, abandoned by her second husband in 1920s Detroit, with four children to provide for and only an eighth-grade education, she is forced into a decision that will haunt her forever.
From the author of Walking Home: Trail Stories, Ryker’s Augusta is gripping historical fiction based on the true, against-the-odds story of her grandmother, a woman who fled the hardships of the Ozarks at the turn of the 20th century for a new city, and a chance at a better life. She had to confront the kind of poverty that you can almost smell, the kind that is in the background of the Neapolitan novels by Elena Ferrante and The Grapes of Wrath. All three novels tell us that poverty has to do with a lot more than money. Self-worth is measured differently by the poor, so are luxury, duty, comfort, and success. The poor are snared by forces outside their control.

Some readers might find this a heroic story, but there were millions of farm folk like Augusta at the beginning of the 20th century. They did what they needed to do to survive. Men were sheared of their dignity when they lost the farm or lost a job, and couldn’t support their families. Like Augusta’s two husbands, they often turned to alcohol in their shame. The women made do, taking responsibility for the children.

Her particular struggle was common in the early 1900s: Marriage at 13, children born as they came, a move from the farm to the grinding, dirty, dangerous city, and meeting new immigrants who had fled similar hardships.

Details carry the story and are constantly surprising. The reader learns how the first washing machines worked, how unwelcome a hospital birth was after knowing the intimacy and convenience of having your baby at home, and what tenements were like.

Ryker shares with us in an interview the following:

Ryker’s previous book, Walking Home: Trail Stories, is about more than mud, sweat, and blisters while distance hiking the Long Trail. Reminiscent of Cheryl Strayed’s Wild, Ryker’s mind wanders as her legs carry her forward, beyond a woodland path, to places and people she thought she had forgotten. Her grandmother’s spirit appears on Mount Baker. A lost cousin waits for her at the bottom of every ladder. Her late father’s words reverberate among the calls of barred owls. There were days when she didn’t see another hiker, but she was never alone. Ryker began writing about a difficult hike and ended up writing about the people who inspired her throughout her life. These are her “trail stories.”

“Augusta shows women everywhere that no matter how hard one’s journey is, the key is to keep moving, and to not let one’s past or rough start dictate their life’s outcome,” concludes Ryker.

New York City will purchase millions of dollars of medical debt and then erase it in effort to help as many as 500,000 residents, Mayor Eric Adams announced on Monday.

The program involves partnering with a nonprofit organization, RIP Medical Debt, that buys unpaid medical debt from hospitals at a steep discount and then clears it. The city will invest $18 million to relieve more than $2 billion in medical debt for hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers, Adams said.

Affected New Yorkers will be notified that their medical debt has been relieved, as there is no application process for the one-time debt relief program, which will launch early this year and run for three years.

“No one chooses to go into medical debt — if you’re sick or injured, you need to seek care. But no New Yorker should have to choose between paying rent or for other essentials and paying off their medical debt,” Adams said in a statement.

The program is aimed at New Yorkers whose unpaid medical bills are at least 5% of their annual household income or those in households with an income under four times the federal poverty line, which is $31,200 for a family of four.

Medical debt is the single-largest cause of bankruptcy in the United States, and disproportionately affects low-income Americans and those without health insurance or who are underinsured.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul in December signed legislation that bars health care professionals and ambulances from reporting medical debt to credit agencies.

A New York charity started in 2014, RIP Medical has abolished more than $10.4 billion in medical debt for more than 7 million people since its inception, according to its website.

I’m following up my email last week, after Iranian President Hassan Rouhani declared over 25 million Iranians have contracted COVID, to bring your attention to a U.S. based organization aiding relief efforts both here and in Iran. I’m hoping you’ll take interest in this story as a standalone focus, orin tapping into the organization’s leadership for commentary on this or other related affairs.

Moms Against Poverty (MAP) is a global non-profit organization, founded in 2008 in San Francisco as a volunteer-based nonprofit organization to nurture and educate underprivileged children. In 2020, MAP is working diligently to aid children and the poor impacted by COVID-19. They are active in helping U.S. families,having provided over 50,000 meals in 2020 alone for families from San Francisco to Washington, D.C. but are also currently one of the only U.S. based charities able to provide aid to Iran.

In regards to Iranian humanitarian efforts, the decades-long political stalemate, and severe sanctions / banking restrictions imposed by the U.S., inhibit availability of medical equipment to stem the coronavirus’ effects. Support is desperately needed for the most vulnerable of the populace.

This year alone, MAP has supported over 200,000 children and their families in Iran by providing 27 ventilators, 7 ECGs, 6 radiography machines, 3 oxygen machines, 150 oxygen tanks and tens of thousands of various forms of critical PPEs, including isolation clothing, surgical gowns, masks,and face shields. Beyond hospital support, MAP also donated PPEs, disinfectants and surface cleaners to public orphanages and homeless shelters in Iran.

While this is an accomplishment that tackles the first phase of the pandemic, to alleviate the ever-increasing economic impact of COVID-19, MAP has transitioned their effort to hunger relief in Iran. They recently distributed food packets including groceries such as meat, rice and more to 2000 families. Additionally,MAP has launched a bread project where families in Iran receive bread for a month. MAP also have had a disaster relief NGO arm, operating in Iran since 2010. Recently their funds ceiling quota was tripled by OFAC, allowing them to do even more work. More information on the organization’s efforts is in their mid-year report, here.

While there is brinksmanship ongoing between the U.S. and Iran, the suffering of innocents due to COVID is something that should be addressed and helped at all costs.

Dr. Benjamin S. Carson, Sr., M.D., had a childhood dream of becoming a physician. Growing up in a single parent home with dire poverty, poor grades, a horrible temper, and low self-esteem appeared to preclude the realization of that dream until his mother, with only a third-grade education, challenged her sons to strive for excellence. Young Ben persevered and today is an emeritus professor of neurosurgery, oncology, plastic surgery, and pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and he has directed pediatric neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center for over 39 years. He became the inaugural recipient of a professorship dedicated in his name in May, 2008. He is now the Emeritus Benjamin S. Carson, Sr., M.D. and Dr. Evelyn Spiro, R.N. Professor of Pediatric Neurosurgery, having retired on June 30, 2013.

Some career highlights include the first separation of craniopagus (Siamese) twins joined at the back of the head in 1987, the first completely successful separation of type-2 vertical craniopagus twins in 1997 in South Africa, and the first successful placement of an intrauterine shunt for a hydrocephalic twin. Although he has been involved in many newsworthy operations, he feels that every case is noteworthy – deserving of maximum attention. He is interested in all aspects of pediatric neurosurgery and has a special interest in trigeminal neuralgia (severe facial pain) in adults.

Dr. Carson holds more than 60 honorary doctorate degrees. He is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, the Horatio Alger Society of Distinguished Americans, and many other prestigious organizations. He sits on the board of directors of numerous organizations, including Kellogg Company, Costco Wholesale Corporation, the Academy of Achievement, and is an Emeritus Fellow of the Yale Corporation, the governing body of Yale University. He was appointed in 2004 by President George W. Bush to serve on the President’s Council on Bioethics. He is a highly regarded motivational speaker who has addressed various audiences from school systems and civic groups to corporations and the President’s National Prayer Breakfast.

In 2001, Dr. Carson was named by CNN and TIME Magazine as one of the nation’s 20 foremost physicians and scientists. That same year, he was selected by the Library of Congress as one of 89 “Living Legends” on the occasion of its 200th anniversary. He is also the recipient of the 2006 Spingarn Medal which is the highest honor bestowed by the NAACP. In February, 2008, Dr. Carson was presented with the Ford’s Theatre Lincoln Medal by President Bush at the White House. In June, 2008, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by the President, which is the highest civilian honor in the land. He has literally received hundreds of other awards during his distinguished career.

In June 2013, after 40 years of medical endeavors, Carson retired and today serves as Professor Emeritus of Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins University.

In addition writing a weekly opinion column for The Washington Times, Carson is a FOX News contributor and currently working on his newest book, One Nation, scheduled for release in May 2014.

Today, Dr. Carson and his wife, Candy, dedicate themselves to expanding the reach of the Carson Scholars Fund. Their dream is to name a Carson Scholar in every school within the United States.

I am fully aware that there are those organizations who desperately would like for me to seek public office, specifically that of the President of the United States. I have not endorsed any of these organizations and have neither any professional nor personal relationships and am not in communication with any of them. Furthermore, I maintain that as of today it is not my intention to seek public office. Instead I will continue to strive very hard to not only expose what is happening in our nation, but also to suggest ways to regain a direction that will lead our nation towards freedom and justice for all. If God has other plans for me moving forward, I am certain he will make those clear and I will always listen.
