In September 2008, the company changed it’s name from the R.A.B. Food Group to the Manischewitz Company, under which it operates today.

It all started with Rabbi Dov Behr

The B. Manischewitz Company, LLC traces its beginnings back to the spring of 1888, when Rabbi Dov Behr Manischewitz opened a small Matzo bakery in Cincinnati, Ohio.

A humble beginning

It was largely from his spiritual concerns that he set out to make matzo or unleavened bread for Passover, first for his family and a few friends, but soon for many of the devout Jews of the city. His bakery soon evolved into a successful business, innovative and prosperous––though never inattentive to the spiritual needs of its customers.

From small bakery to booming business

By the end of the century, demand for his matzo had become so great that Rabbi Manischewitz turned to the use of gas-fired ovens, replacing the older coal stoves being used by other Jewish bakers. The newer ovens allowed for much more careful control of the baking speed, insuring a consistent and standard quality to the matzos.
He also introduced portable traveling-tunnel ovens, and was the first to package his matzos for shipment to places beyond the immediate neighborhood of his bakery. He even began shipping his matzos overseas, to such diverse places as England, Japan, France, Hungary, Egypt and New Zealand. His bright, clean bakery would become a model for future kosher bakeries, both in America and abroad.

Matzo on the move

In 1932, the company built a second factory. Located in Jersey City, New Jersey, the plant quickly became the model for all new machine-made matzo bakeries worldwide. Closer to a much larger Jewish population than that of Cincinnati, the new factory also made distribution of the company’s product more efficient and quickly enlarged its customer base. The Manischewitz label was soon dominant in ethnic grocery stores and delicatessens in the larger East Coast cities. Thanks to the technology and efficiency of the New Jersey factory, Manischewitz was able to close down the Cincinnati facility altogether.

Same quality, more quantity

In 1940, Manischewitz produced its first Tam Tam cracker. It signaled the initial departure from its line of matzo products. About the same time, in a licensing arrangement, Manischewitz wines began to be sold throughout the country.
In 1954, the company purchased a processing plant located in Vineland, New Jersey. The Vineland facility, which has now ceased operations, manufactured all of the company’s canned and jarred products, including old familiar favorites like gefilte fish, chicken soup and borscht. The plant was primarily a hand-pack processing operation stressing careful attention to quality and flexibility. Workers there packed about 2,000,000 lbs. of fish and 1,000,000 lbs. of beets each year.

The Evolution of a Song-A Brief History

The Star Spangled Banner was written as a poem by Francis Scott Key on the deck of a small boat September 14, 1814, as he observed the bombardment of Fort McHenry by the British during the War of 1812. After having already burned Washington, D.C. the British entered the harbor intent on sacking Baltimore. Inspired by the heroic American stand which turned back the powerful British Fleet, and by the sight of the American flag still flying after a day and night of heavy rocket exchange, Key jotted down some lines on an envelope and wrote out the verses when he later returned to shore. It was published the very next day on a handbill entitled, Defense of Ft. McHenry, and quickly met with wide public approval.

The melody to which the stanzas were written was that of an English drinking song, To Anacreon In Heaven. Anacreon was the convivial Greek poet whose verses celebrated love and wine, and who became the patron saint of The Anacreontic Society, a gentlemen’s club, whose enthusiastic and bawdy meetings had gained quite a reputation, and from whence the song became popular. To Anacreon In Heaven was sung in the taverns of Colonial America, and by 1814 was an American standby. To that tune, in 1798, Tom Paine had written a patriotic verse,Adams and Liberty, which became well known around the young nation.

But when Francis Scott Key’s verses were tacked on the doors of Baltimore’s taverns, his song was heartfully sung as a celebration of victory in war and national pride. As the popularity of Key’s song grew, the original Anacreontic song, Paine’s version, and other attempts to write verses (including one by Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes), were forgotten and Key’s most popular verse, The Star Spangled Banner, became the favorite national song. In 1931, Congress officially designated it as the United States National Anthem.

Now, in the ongoing folk tradition of adding new verses to old songs, visionary singer, songwriter Stephen Longfellow Fiske brings the evolution of the song to the global perspective of the 21st century, blending democratic ideals, peace, and environmental harmony with his Earth Anthem.

A descendant of poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Stephen is a poet in his own right, and has produced nine albums of his music. His most recent CD, Earth Anthem, How Do You Want Your World? features Stephen’s acapella/string arrangement of Earth Anthem, as well as ten other songs of peace, environmental, spiritual and social concerns. The CD has been getting rave reviews and is being well recieved by the buying public. Stephen and his partners are currently building Earth Anthem Enterprises to help promote Earth Anthem and create a socially responsible business serving a sustainable future.

Bank offerings are cited as providing the biggest ‘bang for your buck’ when it comes to everyday services

When considering the overall value provided by services that involve a bill or fee, a poll released recently by TD Bank, America’s Most Convenient Bank^®, finds over half of consumers (57%) cite day-to-day banking as providing the greatest value for their investment. This is relative to other services including, telephone/mobile phone (19%), cable/satellite television (19%) and financial advice (5%). 

Convenience Is Key – The TD Bank poll reveals that when it comes to value provided by their checking accounts and day-to-day banking needs convenience reigns supreme. The top elements considered to be the most valuable include: · Easy online banking (62%) · Convenient bank store locations (47%) · Convenient ATMs (45%) · Options for no, or reduced fees (41%)

Men vs. Women – Men are more likely to note easy online banking (63%) and convenient ATMs (46%) as the most valuable elements to their checking accounts. On the other hand, women cite convenient bank hours (30%) and branch locations (52%) as the most valuable. 

Banking on Your Watch – Online banking is the most frequent banking activity. Respondents noted going online to manage their finances an average of five times per month. According to the poll, consumers would like to visit banks in the evening or on weekends more than they currently do (30% versus 19%).
