The endowment empowers a new generation of professionals committed to values-driven leadership at this pivotal moment in world affairs

New York, NY – January 16, 2025 – Today, Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs announced a transformational gift from the Uehiro Foundation on Ethics and Education to establish the “Uehiro–Carnegie Endowment for Future Generations.” The Uehiro Foundation gift builds upon the Council’s recent project to establish its Global Ethics Hub in New York City. The new Uehiro endowment will create novel educational programs and global-scale engagements for next generation leaders. This vital work furthers Carnegie Council’s over 100-year legacy of empowering ethical reflection, analysis, and action.

“Humanity has never been more connected yet more fractured,” said Joel Rosenthal, president of Carnegie Council. “New ethical issues are emerging rapidly, fed by intense polarization, the development of novel technologies, and concern for the core principles of democracy and international cooperation. We are grateful to the Uehiro Foundation for this extraordinary gift, which will inspire a new generation to use the power of ethics to build a better world.”

The grant enables a renewal of Andrew Carnegie’s vision for mobilizing the world’s intellectual and financial resources in the service of peace, education, and moral leadership—a vision that has guided Carnegie Council for more than a century. Such work is essential today as an old order fades, and a new order is struggling to emerge.

In response to this moment, the endowment will focus on applied ethics as a tool for the professional and personal development of next generation leaders. Together, Carnegie Council and Uehiro Foundation fellows, staff, and global partners will provide access to ethics-focused education and programming to assess key moral questions, navigate difficult decisions and tradeoffs, and examine values and interests in an interconnected world.

The endowed partnership builds on a twenty-year collaboration between Carnegie Council and the Uehiro Foundation dedicated to international convenings, ethics, and education. The following statement released today by the Uehiro Foundation touched on the deep history between the two organizations: “Over the years, we have become genuine partners as ‘the voice of ethics’ in international affairs. The Uehiro-Carnegie Endowment for Future Generations will enable us to work together more effectively, with united strength, in pursuit of our common mission.”

NMA works to protect families from the devastating effects of meningococcal disease by educating the public, medical professionals and others about the disease and vaccines available to prevent it. NMA was formed in 2002 by parents whose children died or live with permanent disabilities from meningococcal disease. Like many families, NMA’s founders were unaware that meningococcal disease vaccination could have prevented their anguish. Since NMA was founded, great strides have been made in meningitis prevention. NMA has supported the creation of broad recommendations for meningococcal vaccines to protect all preteens and teens, worked to advocate for state vaccination requirements, and helped increase awareness and vaccine uptake. The organization also provides emotional support for individuals and families who have experienced meningococcal disease.

To accomplish its goals, NMA develops programs and resources that reach audiences on national and grassroots levels. Parents, disease survivors and other family members help carry out NMA’s mission by conducting community awareness activities across the country through two key programs: Moms on Meningitis (M.O.M.s) and Together Educating About Meningitis (T.E.A.M.). Celebrating ten years of educational excellence and success,
Nora Cronin Presentation Academy is a Catholic private school for under
served minority girls in grades 5-8 from low-income families in the Newburgh Enlarged City School District. Hudson Valley Gives is initiated by the Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan, in collaboration with United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region and Mid-Hudson Valley Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. This 24-hour fundraising event will raise funds and awareness for not-for-profit organizations located in or serving seven Hudson Valley counties-Orange, Ulster, Sullivan, Rockland, Dutchess, Putnam and Westchester.

Fueled by the power of social media,
Hudson Valley Gives unites nonprofits in a call-to-action to raise critical funds they need to make our valley a better place to live, work, play and serve. Monies raised will support education, welfare, arts and culture, the environment, health and human services, recreation, veterans, volunteerism, and youth. It is modeled after the internationally popular Giving Tuesday, but this initiative is more regionalized, encouraging Hudson Valley donors to give local first.
All monies raised here in the Hudson Valley stay here in the Hudson Valley.

Nora Cronin Presentation Academy’s funding goal for this initiative is to raise $8,000.00 through this year’s HV Gives-to help sponsor our student’s costs. We need and appreciate your generous support in helping our girls lift themselves out of poverty through education.
