During its first ten years, Peace Day Philly has always emphasized its founding mission: Empowering all people to collaboratively build a more peaceful and just world.

Communities of color, especially African-American communities, are deeply suffering as they face violence, injustice, lack of access and inequality. This cannot stand. We must work together to take on and dismantle racism when and where we see it, and work toward more just, united, healthy, and peaceful communities. We all suffer when racism exists.

We applaud the many Philly organizations that are finding ways to create interactive, meaningful programming at this critical time. We welcome collaborators for future programs. Our sincere thanks to all who are helping others out there, even at risk to their own health.

Peace Day Philly will continue to stand against racism and for greater safety, justice and peace in Philadelphia communities and beyond.

Peace Day Philly promotes and collaborates on programming related to personal, local and/or global peace, on and around the United Nations International Day of Peace (“Peace Day”), SEPTEMBER 21.

Peace Day Philly was founded in 2011 by a small group of individuals and organizational representatives, including the UN Association of Greater Philadelphia, as a grassroots initiative. PDP became a formal non-profit in 2013. As of 2018, Peace Day Philly became a non-governmental organization (NGO) affiliated with the United Nations.

In 2011, Peace Day Philly hosted 3 free, diverse peace programs in Philadelphia. By 2013, there were well over 20 peace programs taking place annually during the week in which Peace Day falls, offered by a wide range of organizations and groups. In past years, children and youth have participated in peace activities in schools and libraries across the region, and the Philadelphia Police Department has offered numerous additional youth and community building programs in Philly neighborhoods.

Peace Day Philly offers and collaborates on programs, but many of the activities that make up each year’s activities are offered by Philly-region organizations based on their work as it relates to peace and justice. 20-60 Organizations are involved each year.

PEACE DAY PHILLY WORKS TO:
– ENCOURAGE a broad-base of organizations to use the platform of the United Nations International Day of Peace (observed worldwide on and around September 21) to offer and/or engage in an activity related to peace that is in keeping with their mission/goals.
– COLLABORATE with other organizations and groups to develop and present high-quality, content rich programs on a wide range of topics related to personal, local and/or global peace.
– PROVIDE a wide range of resources and links via our website and social media for organizations, groups and individuals to engage in Peace Day.
– ENGAGE civic offices, city Departments and leaders to use Peace Day Philly to forward ongoing safety enhancement and community resiliency work taking place year round.
– PROMOTE peace programs and activities – both local and global – throughout the year through community partnerships.
– SUSTAIN efforts and initiatives sparked by the International Day of Peace whenever possible.

To learn more about how you can get involved in Peace Day Philly, go to the “What Can You Do” section of this website, or e-mail us at contact@peacedayphilly.org.

Dear Friends and Lovers of the Earth,

Sending again for those who didn’t see this but are interested and haven’t yet registered! https://landing.pachamama.org/gathering There will be a pull-down menu there with my name, so our Pachamama folks can register you at “my virtual table”!

We are at that time of year of harvest and celebration even despite the hardships and stresses we have all experienced in our Mother Earth being insulted by policies to promote further drilling, by the rolling back of clean water and air policies, the evisceration of the EPA, serious encroachments on social, political and economic injustice and by the profound disregard for sentient life over these past several years.

Despite and because of all of this, we have doubled-down in our commitment to set things aright, and one of our ways of doing that, and gaining sustenance from other, like-minded, like-hearted people, is our relationship to each other of course and with the Pachamama Alliance who has been championing the cause of indigenous people in the Amazon Rainforest, the Rainforest itself, and justice of every sort across the planet.

Please watch this inspiring, 1-minute video: https://pachamama.wistia.com/medias/qgcg0db4di

And then register for our Virtual Luncheon this year right here—I’d love to have you. https://landing.pachamama.org/gathering

Because this year’s gathering is virtual, not just in NYC, I am inviting people who wouldn’t otherwise be able to attend, for an even bigger, more inclusive & Global turnout.

Positive Influences: Pachamama Alliance & The Tibet House – A Better World

And needless to say, I hope everyone receiving this has voted or is poised to. We need a landslide!

If you would, please send me an email to let me know if you’ve signed up to attend.

Looking forward to seeing you soon!

Five national Scholastic Award recipients will be selected to receive the special award, which includes $1,000, for their original work of writing or art. The goal is to encourage young people to use literary and artistic outlets for self-expression while considering their roles in creating a more tolerant world. Students are asked to create original written pieces or works of art that reflect upon the lessons learned from the Holocaust and other genocides and attempt to raise awareness of the importance of increasing tolerance to safeguard a peaceful society.

According to Ms. Ben-Ari, currently CEO of Gedenk, “We are pleased to collaborate with the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers and the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards on this campaign. It’s not easy to encourage young people to learn about atrocities such as the Holocaust, but this unique and creative approach has engaged them to embrace tolerance.”

Coinciding with the Scholastic Awards campaign, Gedenk is celebrating the launch of their newly designed website, GedenkMovement.org. The site is a hub of information and a nexus for young people to explore the themes of Gedenk’s mission of tolerance. The site will feature forums, blogs, video content, and interactive dialogue that encourage visitors to become a supportive community and share how they have fought back against intolerance. Gedenk is a word that means, “remember” in Yiddish. In that spirit, site visitors can contribute to the virtual memorial by adding a name and message in honor of anyone who endured a form of genocide.

Gedenk was established in 2006 to promote awareness about how ignorance, bigotry and hatred have and can ultimately result in genocide, even in a civilized society. The Jewish Holocaust began with commonplace acts – simple acts of intolerance, prejudice, and bigotry between neighbors, such as those that many of us are used to seeing and ignoring every day. Gedenk strives to empower young people, giving them the tools to stand up for themselves, their peers and their community against intolerance of all kinds.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards program is the longest-running, most prestigious recognition and scholarship initiative for creative teens. The Awards program and the Gedenk Award for Tolerance are open to any public, private, parochial or home-school student in grades 7-12 in the U.S., Canada, and American schools abroad. Submissions are now being accepted and the deadlines vary slightly by region, from mid-December 2013 through mid-January 2014.

Gedenk is excited to team up with the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers after similar partnerships have successfully helped carry Gedenk’s mission on a global level. In 2011, Gedenk partnered with MTV/Viacom and Public Interest, to launch three public service announcement campaigns titled “The Holocaust happened to people like us” which received extensive coverage from the major networks. The Scholastic Awards have supported and encouraged the creativity of teens for 90 years, and in 2013 received more than 230,000 submissions from students everywhere. Collectively with Gedenk this special award will recognize and celebrate the exceptional vision and impact of the youth of today.

Cortney Renee moved to NYC to attend The King’s College where she studied Politics, Philosophy, and Economics. Her pursuit of modeling and acting provided appearances in Brides magazine and feature films and TV shows including How To Lose Friends and Alienate People, August, and Gossip Girl. Her passion for justice inspired involvement in the 2009 launch of Stop Child Trafficking Now. Her love for fashion and philanthropy birthed a brand which aims to promote ethical fashion. She currently resides in NYC where she endeavors to bring light to designers making a difference! Her long term hope is to inspire the fashion industry to make a creative and engaging world contribution. Her personal mission is to reflect true beauty, and her definition of “true beauty” is one that “come from a heart that lives to give back”. So she endeavors to reflect that in all things, both professionally and personally.

Company Background:

In 2010, Cortney decided to build a bridge between her two passions, fashion and philanthropy. She had been in the fashion industry as a model and actress, since moving to NY in 2004 and she wanted to employ the influence and creativity of the fashion industry to make a difference in our world, on both a national and international scale. She began a fashion blog, wherein she covered philanthropic fashion brands (brands that have a give back built into their business model and fund a partner NGO or an internal NGO). In her research and networking she learned of ingenious social entrepreneurs pioneering new territory, and she realized they were on the cutting edge of social enterprise by employing fashion as a tool to effect global change. Her mission continued to evolve and grow, and she began to offer professional modeling services to these start-ups and her fashion industry insight to help them enter the mainstream.

Now, a year later, Cortney is hosting her 2nd evening of philanthropic fashion where we celebrate brands making a difference. She has professional models (many of them her friends) act as spokes models for the evening. Their first event, “Share the Love: An Evening of Philanthropic Fashion” saw 1,000 inspired and thrilled New Yorkers, and was a huge success. Their next event, “Hampton’s Summer Preview Party: An Evening of Philanthropic Fashion” will be held May 23rd, 2011. The company’s major fashion sponsors include Peace Love World, Same Sky, Native Honey, and their non-profit partners include the Somaly Mam Foundation and Print4Change/Healing Haiti, and their corporate sponsors include the Body Shop, Equinox, and many more. Cortney has also begun to offer fashion film production to brands to build their brand image online and give them new inventive ways to reach their target demographic. She looks forward to seeing this division grow.
