The Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF) hosted their annual Pro-Am Tennis & Golf Tournament in South Florida. The tournaments were a part of a five-day event that combines the 2023 Milken Institute South Florida Dialogues and annual Pro-Am Tournaments.  2023 is a double-anniversary for the PCF as it was both the 25^th Anniversary of the PCF in Palm Beach and the 30^th Anniversary year of the Foundation itself.

The Milken Institute South Florida Dialogues in Palm Beach took place over three days, which included the annual PCF Pro-Am Tennis Tournament and special golf tournament; and concluded with three days of events in Miami. The first night in Palm Beach saw a talk held at the home of Roxann Taylor before the PCF dinner at the home of Jeff and Mei Sze Greene.  The highlight of the second day was the Gala Dinner hosted by Howard and Wendy Cox and held at the Cox Science Center and Aquarium with entertainment by The Beach Boys.  The Cox Science Center has educated some 10 million young minds in STEM during its sixty years of operation with a new expansion and aquarium due to open in 2026.

All proceeds from the PCF Pro-Am Tennis Tournament and the Golf Tournament funded PCF’s promising and innovative research efforts for the prevention, detection and treatment of prostate cancer, and to help extend and improve the lives of all cancer patients:

• Young Investigators: PCF has launched and supported the careers of more than 500 scientists whose work has led to 15 new FDA-approved treatments.  Since the creation of the PCF some 2,000 young investigator awards have been made and their work has led to four Nobel prizes in Medicine.

• VA Partnership: providing best-in-care treatments for our U.S. veterans

• Team Science: PCF Challenge Award Teams continue to produce scientific breakthroughs and serve as a role model for other disease-specific foundations.

• The Cutting Edge of Research: By focusing on immunotherapy, the microbiome and nutrition science, discoveries in PCF-funded research have been highly leveraged in diagnosing and treating more than 70 other cancers.

• Precision Medicine: PCF helps identify the right treatment for the right patient at the right time, and may be at the heart of solving the mystery of cancer. The newest, largest initiative TACTICAL (Therapy ACceleration To Intercept CAncer Lethality) aims to provide awards of up to $10 million over three years to support large-scale research projects led by qualified teams of academic scientists that specifically address the development of 21st Century therapies for lethal forms of prostate cancer.

Following the Gala on Saturday night, the PCF Pro-Am finals took place on Sunday afternoon at The Breakers.  Players as well as spectators enjoyed some great matches. After a competitive day, this year’s winners included Laura Gordon (Champion – Group 1), Scott Shleifer Runner-Up – Group 1), Marisa Brown (Champion – Group 2), Steve Tananbaum (Runner-Up – Group 2), Arik Ruchim (Champion – Group 3) and Joe Jacobs (Runner-Up – Group 3).

Following the conclusion of the tennis tournament,  a reception, panel discussion and dinner was hosted by Don and Katrina Peebles at The Bath Club in Miami.

National Prostate Health Month (NPHM), also known as National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, is observed every September in the United States (US) by health experts, health advocates, and individuals concerned with men’s prostate health and prostate cancer.

We speak to Dr. Earle Burgess, an oncologist from Charlotte, North Carolina.

Other than skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in American men. The American Cancer Society’s estimates for prostate cancer in the US for 2021 are1:
• About 248,530 new cases of prostate cancer
• About 34,130 deaths from prostate cancer
Once someone is diagnosed with prostate cancer, the patient and their doctor continue to check the prostate- specific antigen, or PSA, which can be measured through a routine blood test. A rise in PSA can indicate whether the cancer is progressing, but it cannot show where the cancer has spread.2
If the cancer is found to have spread to other parts of the body, also known as metastatic prostate cancer, it might be important to learn about a biomarker called prostate-specific membrane antigen, or PSMA, that can tell patients and their physicians so much more. A biomarker is a characteristic of a patient’s cancer that can be measured and provides a doctor more information about the cancer.
PSMA is found in more than 80% of men with prostate cancer.3 Although PSA and PSMA are both important biomarkers, they indicate different things.4
PSMA is identified with a positron emission tomography scan (an imaging scan) and can show a patient where the cancer has spread.5 PSMA can help give the doctor additional information to assess the progression of the prostate cancer and help inform the decision that both the patient and doctor will make regarding a treatment plan.
Now there is a new campaign launching to help people learn more and better understand what PSMA is and what it can tell a patient and doctor about the patient’s metastatic prostate cancer.
On Monday September 13, we will have an expert available to explain the importance of PSMA, an important yet underrecognized biomarker in the diagnosis of prostate cancer. The expert will also outline the details of the new PSMA campaign.

The highly anticipated Dinner at Daniel was an exquisite culinary experience featuring a special guest performance by Grammy® Award winners Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo. The memorable evening welcomed leaders in medicine, top research scientists and distinguished New York City socialites to explore refined European cuisine, world-class wines and the gracious hospitality at Restaurant Daniel in support of the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

For instance, a crippling 33% of male U.S. veterans have been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

In their efforts to advance prostate cancer research and improve the lives of patients, the Prostate Cancer Foundation found that American veterans are often underserved. PCF’s partnership with the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) aims to create Centers of Excellence throughout the country that will bring state-of-the-art precision oncology care to veterans. Dinner guests graciously contributed in support of the exciting partnership between the PCF and the VA. The Barry & Daria Foundation matched their previous $2.5 million gift, committing, in total, $5 million to support equally both the Manhattan Campus for Precision Oncology Center of Excellence as well as a new campus in Florida. The 2018 New York Dinner was a momentous occasion celebrating the generosity of various supporters, constituencies and stakeholders.

This year marks the 25th Anniversary of the Prostate Cancer Foundation’s impact on cancer research and people’s lives. WHAT:
The inaugural Blue Jacket Fashion Show and Dinner was held Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at Pier 59 Studios during New York Men’s Fashion Week. In partnership with Johnson & Johnson, the Blue Jacket Fashion Show benefited the Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF), founded by philanthropist and financier Michael Milken. Money raised will go towards funding cutting-edge research that will save, extend and improve the lives of not only prostate cancer patients but other cancer patients as well.

The Blue Jacket Fashion Show brought together the fashion, entertainment, sports, healthcare, and media worlds around a national platform to openly discuss men’s cancer issues, with an emphasis on prostate cancer. Coinciding with February’s Cancer Prevention Month and New York Men’s Fashion Week, the Blue Jacket Fashion Show included designers such as John Varvatos, Nick Graham, Joseph Abboud, Nicole Miller, Rag and Bone, Proper Cloth, Stephen F, Maggie Norris, Gustavo Moscoso, Thom Browne and Haspel who used their creative talents to “reinvent” the traditional blue blazer.

Those walking the runway wearing one-of-a-kind blue jackets included models, actors, athletes, members of the media, and business titans. Among those walking were actor Mario Cantone, musician and model Ian Mellencamp, New York Giants Wide Receiver Victor Cruz, TV personality Carson Kressley, science educator and host of the forthcoming Netflix series Bill Nye Saves the World Bill Nye, New York Yankees Pitcher CC Sabathia, New York Post’s Richard Johnson, model Alex Lundqvist, and CNN Anchor Don Lemon. Several of the specially designed jackets modeled during the show will be auctioned off with proceeds going to the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

The fashion show was followed by a cocktail reception and a 3-course dinner, featuring seasonal ingredients and Mediterranean inspired dishes, designed by Executive Chef Simone Cucchiara. While guests were enjoying dinner, President and CEO of the Prostate Cancer Foundation, Dr. Jonathan Simons, addressed the attendees and thanked them for making it a memorable first Blue Jacket event in support of prostate cancer research and hoping to see everyone next year, making the Blue Jacket Fashion Show and Dinner a new annual event. A silent auction was also held, featuring sought-after sports memorabilia and original artworks, all proceeds benefiting the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

The event’s Challenge Research Award raised over $3.5 million in support of the foundation’s work.

The gala was hosted in support of the 12th Annual Charles Evans PCF Pro-Am Tennis Tournament being held from August 26 – 28, 2016, named after the successful entrepreneur who constantly turned tragic events throughout his life into philanthropic causes. The gala evening was a wonderful night of dining, dancing and filled with loads of surprises. The event featured special musical performances by Grammy award-winning singer Dianne Reeves, double platinum recording artist Billy Idol, and nationally recognized pop vocal group The Company Men, with a special performance by Francis Collins, Director of National Institutes of Health. 100 percent of the funds raised throughout the evening went to supporting groundbreaking discoveries in cancer research.

The night began with a short quiz by the Founder of the Prostate Cancer Foundation Michael Milken, with guests curiously participating from their seats. Milken then introduced Jan Haber, PCF’s Vice President of Events, to the stage. Haber welcomed guests to the event and thanked them for supporting the very important work of the PCF, after which she introduced the evening’s first performer to the stage, Grammy-award winning singer Dianne Reeves, who performed a few of her celebrated jazz songs to the delight of the audience.

Reeves’ performance was followed by a short speech by Michael Milken on how far PCF has come since its founding, and how much of a difference the foundation’s work does. A video was shown highlighting the foundation’s progress and its aim to make prostate cancer an illness to “find in the history books”. Next, a few words were spoken by PCF’s President and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Jonathan W. Simons. Dr. Simons touched on the progress in gene research and how it has made it possible to identify the drivers behind the disease, in the fight against not only prostate cancer but all types of cancer.

The evening’s next performance was held by The Company Men, who performed a Motown medley, consisting of their interpretation of much loved songs by artists such as Simon & Garfunkel and Billy Joel. The vocal group had come all the way from Los Angeles to perform at the event, which they said they were honored to attend and being able to support. Following The Company Men was a surprise performance by the Director of National Institutes of Health, Dr. Francis Collins, who started off mentioning the nationwide cancer study that is currently being conducted in order to understand how to prevent and identify cancer risk factors at an early stage. Dr. Collins encouraged everyone to join in on this “unprecedented adventure”, before taking out his guitar for a surprise performance of Del Shannon’s “Runaway” in his own version, called “DNA”.

A live auction was also held to support a young scientist. Attendees were asked to donate $75,000 per year to support the research of a young scientist and his or her research in the fight toward prostate cancer. This was followed by an appearance by Mitch Modell, who presented the foundation with a check for $141,ooo on behalf of Modell’s Sporting Goods and all of its customers.

Michael Milken rounded up the evening’s lineup of performances and appearances by extending a heartfelt thank you to all performers, attendees, donors, hosts, pro tennis players and amateurs for making it an unforgettable evening in the support of finding a cure for prostate cancer. To top off the evening, a much anticipated musical performance was held by superstar Billy Idol, who kicked off his performance with crowd favorite “Cradle of Love”.

The Weekend’s Pro-Am Tennis Champions were: Ricky Sandler and Rick Leach, Alex Norcross and Alex Bogomolov Jr., Dick Merkin and Rohan Bopanna, Bill Finneran and Graydon Oliver. Finalists included: Mark Ein and Scott Lipsky, Marie Bernstein and Santiago Gonzalez, Ralph Finerman and Jonathan Erlich, Sammy Herzberg and Jonathan Schneider.

A silent auction was also held, including select items such as A Getaway to a Private Villa in Bali, sports memorabilia such as a signed plaque and boxing glove of legend Muhammad Ali and a signed Michael Jordan jersey, original photographs of Coco Chanel with model Jackie Rogers, as well as exclusive photographs of icons Prince, Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and Mick Jagger.

WHAT:   The Charles Evans PCF Pro-Am Tennis Tour was held in Bridgehampton, NY, over the weekend on Friday, August 22, to Sunday, August 24, 2014, raising over $2.5 million for the Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF).

This wonderful event, returning for its tenth year, sees 32 charity amateur players take to the courts against members of the ATP Tour over two exciting days of round robin competition.   Guests and participants enjoy dining and socializing with the purpose of raising funds for the PCF in its efforts to eradicate prostate cancer, which affects one in six American men. The event kicked off on Friday with a cocktail party and dinner at the home of Julia and David Koch in Southampton. On Saturday, the first three rounds of the Pro AM tournament took place, followed by a lunch at the Palin residence. On Sunday guests enjoyed lunch at the final rounds of the Pro AM tour at the Bridgehampton Tennis and Surf Club and the Trophy Award Ceremony followed.

This year’s amateur players included: Bill Ackman, Andrew Berman, Marie Bernstein, Jerry Cohen, Jim Coleman, Mark Ein, Adam Finerman, Ralph Finerman, Bill Finneran, Larry Gagosian, Amy Griffin, John Griffin, Jeff Greene, Sammy Herzberg, Arik Kislin, Larry Leeds, Howard Marks, Hank Nordhoff, Dean Palin, Joel Pashcow, John Paulson, Brian Reynolds, Zach Schreiber, Steve Schwarzman, Howard Shore, Roger Stein, and Dax Vlassis.

Pro players included: Alex Asta, Guillermo Canas, Scott Davis, Ashley Fisher, Mariusz Fyrstenberg, Teymuraz Gabashvili, Chris Haggard, Luke Jensen, Murphy Jensen, Don Johnson, Robert Kendrick, Kevin Kim, Rick Leach, Jason Lipsky, Alex O’Brien, Jared Palmer, Jason Pinsky.   RESULTS:

When his father developed Alzheimer’s disease in the late 1960s, Mr. Evans made large donations to Alzheimer’s research and eventually became national director of the Alzheimer’s Association.   In 1975, his former wife, Frances, and their two daughters, Elizabeth and Melissa, died in a fire caused by errant ashes from their fireplace. Mr. Evans created the Crusade for Fire Detection, aimed at educating the public on the need for fire detectors and lobbying for laws to make them mandatory. Charles sent out hundreds of fire detectors as gifts and chain letters. Countless lives have been saved through the mandatory laws of fire alarms.   Charles had a true zeal for life. From WWII veteran to successful entrepreneur, feature film producer, to a dedicated philanthropist. Charles was a dynamic, charismatic, old school Gentleman. He was one of a kind and adored by all worldwide.
