Military Working Dogs serve alongside Soldiers in crucial roles, including detecting explosives and narcotics and providing protection, significantly enhancing operational success and safety.

The Army Reserve invests extensive time and resources into training Military Working Dogs, ensuring they are skilled in areas such as tracking, detection, patrol, and search-and-rescue missions, making them invaluable assets on the battlefield. Today, the Army Reserve has just over 500 Military Working Dogs and mine-detection dogs.

Beyond their operational value, Military Working Dogs build strong bonds with their handlers, fostering trust and morale. They are more than tools—they are trusted teammates and companions. The Army Reserve recognizes and values the loyalty and dedication of Military Working Dogs by ensuring they receive top-quality care during their service and a dignified retirement once their duties are complete, often being adopted by their handlers or loving families.

The U.S. Army Veterinary Corps and the Army Military Working Dogs Program takes a holistic approach to the dogs’ overall wellness and quality of life. In addition to the Military Working Dogs, Army Reserve veterinarians often serve as the first line of care for service members’ pets, ceremonial horses, and other animals within the Department of Defense.

The Veterinary Corps is a unique branch of the Army organized under the Army Medical Department. Army Reserve veterinarians are critical to the military, often performing important roles such as:

Provide routine medical care, perform surgeries, and respond to emergency situations.

Lead cutting-edge research to advance the understanding of zoonotic diseases (those that can spread from animals to human), biosecurity, and animal health.

Ensure the safety and quality of food consumed by Soldiers by inspecting food production and distribution facilities, like our posts’ commissaries. The Soldiers ensure that food supplies are free from contamination and meet safety standards both in the U.S. and deployed locations.

Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Jessica Brozda, a Veterinary Preventive Medicine Officer based at Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey, and the Officer in Charge (OIC) of the 7358th Veterinary Detachment. She’ll discuss the role of a veterinarian in the military and explain how they play a vital role in improving Military Working Dogs’ quality of life and overall wellness, as well as caring for other animals.

As the weather cools down, award-winning Army chef and Staff Sergeant (SSG) Samantha Poe is dishing up delectable fall favorites, including a delicious and healthy beet cake full of essential vitamins that can help with blood pressure and athletic performance, which helped lead the U.S. Army Culinary Arts Team to a silver medal at the 2020 World Culinary Olympics in Stuttgart, Germany. SSG Poe was also named the American Culinary Federation (ACF) Pastry Chef of the Year in 2019.

A New Study Reveals How to Fill a Vital Gap In Infant Gut Health
New research is showing that a specific probiotic bacteria is key to restoring a baby’s gut to its protective, natural state and providing a foundation for life-long optimal health.
When babies are born they begin to acquire a collection of bacteria called the microbiome –trillions of microorganisms that co-exist in our bodies and live all over us, on our skin, nose, mouth, eyes and gastrointestinal tract, or gut. Research shows that the infant gut microbiome plays a critical role in healthy immune and metabolic development, as well as meeting babies’ dietary needs.
The bacteria in a baby’s microbiome are passed down from their mom at birth. For generations, one strain called B. infantis dominated the infant gut. However, modern medical practices such as increased antibiotic use and C-sections have led to a microbial imbalance in the infant gut and a loss of this key bacteria. This imbalance has been associated with a range of chronic health issues including allergies, asthma, obesity, type 1 diabetes and a host of immunological disorders.
Now, recently published data shows for the first time that supplementation with activated B. infantis can completely transform the gut environment in babies that are fed breast milk. Along with restoring a healthy gut microbiome, the study results show that the supplementation significantly reduced levels of potentially harmful bacteria linked to disease in infants born either through natural or C-section delivery.
Mark Underwood, M.D., Chief Pediatric Neonatologist at UC Davis discussed the study results and explain how the activated form of this beneficial bacteria can be helpful for babies and about other ways to encourage the health of infants.

Taipei, Taiwan – China Airlines (CAL) proudly announces that starting April 28, 2011, flights from Taipei to New York will stop over in Osaka, Japan instead of Anchorage, Alaska. CAL will operate three round-trip flights per week on Boeing 747-400 passenger aircraft. The route change provides more choices and comfort to passengers traveling between Taiwan, Japan and the United States, as well as additional frequency on Taiwan-Japan routes with three additional flights between Taiwan and Japan.

At present, CAL already operates seven flights a week between Taipei and Osaka, and this schedule change will bring the total to ten flights a week. Osaka is Japan’s second-largest metropolis, being just slightly smaller than Tokyo. Osaka’s Kansai International Airport is equipped with modernized facilities, providing a wide variety of shopping, entertainment and rest choices.

To celebrate the new service, CAL is offering a NT$2,000 discount on Taipei-Osaka round-trip tickets, reducing the fare to NT$11,700 for those who purchase tickets through CAL’s website before May 31, 2011. CAL has also launched a new three-day, two-night “Fun in Spring Promotion” Dynasty Package tour for NT$13,000 and up per person, which includes economy airfare, two nights’ accommodation in Osaka and a one-way transportation coupon to get from Kansai airport to downtown Osaka. Those who purchase the package before June 25 will also each receive one sakura-flavored tea drink in their hotel rooms.

CAL is also offering free transfers to any point in the eastern United States for those purchasing tickets before June 16, 2011, so that passengers arriving at New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport at one o’clock pm local time will be able to transfer to major cities in the eastern United States. CAL is also offering special promotional fares for Business Class and Economy Class tickets. Passengers flying to New York on Dynasty Package tours may enjoy a free admission ticket to New York’s famous Empire State Building, while those returning to Taiwan from New York may purchase discounted hotel accommodations in Osaka, with additional cash discounts and mileage benefits for Dynasty Flyer members.

Business Class passengers may enjoy exquisite Japanese meals prepared under the supervision of a master Japanese chef on the Osaka-New York leg of the flight, including Rakuten fine dishes and other elegant and exquisite meals. Economy Class passengers will also enjoy specially prepared Western and Japanese meals, making for a very different flying experience.

In spite of the slowdown in the travel market prompted by the strong earthquake, CAL has continued maintaining normal transport links between Taiwan and Japan. The United Nations, the International Civil Aviation Organization and the World Health Organization have all announced that radiation emission levels in Japan remain well within safe ranges, and that flights to Japan do not endanger the health of flight crews and passengers, making it unnecessary to place any restrictions on Japan-bound flights. Britain, Canada, Denmark and France have already lifted previous restrictions on travel to Tokyo, while the United States also announced on April 14 that its previous Travel Warning for Japan had been lowered to a Travel Alert. The Japan Association of Travel Agents (JATA) has also encouraged the public to resume normal tourism and consumption in Japan as the best way to help Japan recover from its earthquake disaster.
