I love this line, which comes from a quote by Melodie Beattie, which reads in its entirety:

“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend.”

And I would add this thought — that without gratitude, you can turn any paradise into hell.

Without gratitude, you will always walk away from the table still starving — no matter what measure of abundance has been laid before you.

Without gratitude, every job is the worst job on earth, every spouse is deficient, every friend lets you down, every home is on the wrong street, every gift is the wrong size, every novel is full of typos, every mattress is uncomfortable, every cup of coffee is too weak.

Without gratitude, every choice you ever made will always feel like the wrong choice.

Without gratitude, summers will always be too hot; winters will always be too cold. The music will always be too loud, the movie will always suck, the teenagers will always be too rude.

Without gratitude, people who vote or worship differently from you will always be monsters in your eyes. Without gratitude, you will always feel you were born into the wrong family. Without gratitude, the waitress will always be too slow, and you will always get the worst seat on the bus. Without gratitude, every driver on the road except you is an idiot.

Without gratitude, life is The Misery.

These three things are so true…

1) There is no happiness without gratitude
2) There is no transformation without self-accountability
3) There is no peace without forgiveness

But first among those — the alchemy of all alchemies — is gratitude.

If we learn nothing else while we’re here, then, we must learn how to say THANK YOU.

1925 – 1955:

At the end of this email is a quote of the month by Jay Leno.

If you don’t read anything else, Please read what he said.

TO ALL THE
KIDS WHO SURVIVED THE
1930’s, 40’s, and 50’s !!

First, we survived being born to mothers who may have smoked and/or drank – While they were pregnant.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn’t get tested for diabetes.

Then, after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs
Covered with bright colored
Lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, locks on doors or cabinets,
And, when we rode our bikes,
We had baseball caps,
Not helmets, on our heads.

As infants and children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, no booster seats, no seat belts, no air bags, bald tires and sometimes no brakes..

Riding in the back of a pick- up truck on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle, and no one actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread, real butter, and bacon. We drank Kool-Aid made with real white sugar.
And we weren’t overweight.
WHY?
Because we were always outside playing…that’s why!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day .. .
And, we were OKAY.

We would spend hours building
Our go-carts out of scrapsand
then ride them down the hill,

Only to find out that we forgot about brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned To Solve the problem.

We did not
Have Play Stations, Nintendo
and X-boxes. There were
No video games,
No 150 channels on cable,
No video movies
Or DVDs,
No surround-sound or CDs,
No cell phones,
No personal computers,
No Internet and
No chat rooms.
WE HAD FRIENDS
And we went
Outside and found them!

We fell out of
trees, got cut,
Broke bones and
Lost teeth,
And there were
No lawsuits
From those accidents.

We would get
Spankings with wooden spoons, switches, ping-pong paddles, or just a bare hand,
And no one would call child services to report abuse.

We ate worms,
And mud pies
Made from dirt,
And
The worms did
Not live in us forever.

We were given
BB guns for our 10th birthdays,
22 rifles for our 12th, rode horses,
made up games with sticks and
tennis balls, and

-although we were
Told it would happen- we did not put out very many eyes.

We rode bikes
Or walked to a friend’s house and knocked on the door or rang the bell,
or just Walked in and talked to them.

Little League had
tryouts
And not everyone
Made the team.
Those who didn’t
Had to learn
To deal with
Disappointment.

Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent
Bailing us out
If we broke the law
was unheard of …
They actually sided with the law!

These generations have
Produced some of the best risk-takers,
Problem solvers, and
Inventors ever.

The past 60 to 85 years
Have seen an explosion
of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom,
Failure, success and responsibility,
and we learned

Ho w to deal with it all.

If YOU are One of those born
Between 1925-1955, CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want
to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids before the lawyers
and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own good.

While you are at it,
forward it to your kids,
so they will know
how brave and lucky
their parents were.

Kind of makes
you want to run through the house
with scissors, doesn’t it ?

I love this quote and it now serves to guide me to embrace EVERY circumstance I find myself in. If I can’t embrace it (some challenges are harder to embrace than others) then I do my very best to merely accept it, not to resist it.

And that’s likely the miraculous key to the quote… that when you live this quote, you cease being in so much resistance to your life.

My whole life is better because of this practice.

I have a much friendlier relationship to life. I don’t view things as “happening TO me.” I view things as happening FOR me.

And for me in a very specific way. Happening to help me drop my inner resistance to what is, and come back into alignment with the present moment.

Einstein said the important question was, “Is it a friendly or unfriendly universe?”

This quote has helped me become clear that it is a friendly universe. That my whole life gets better (quiet magically I’d say) when I am friendlier with the present moment.

And now you know the only quote that is framed on my wall. The other day I was watching Oprah interview Eckhart Tolle and she said, “I love your quote… “Life will give you whatever experience is most helpful for the evolution of your consciousness. How do you know this is the experience that you’re having? Because you’re having it.”

I hope you love it as well.

1. I’ll be sharing secrets to being an amazing speaker and getting paid for it. (I got my biggest speaking paychecks of my career this year, and I love the craft more than ever before). If you desire to be a speaker, I can give you a ton of tips to accelerate you into this amazing profession.

2. I also share a ton of tips on the most important and beneficial thing I’ve ever learned or done, which is my “presence practice.” I’m 4 years deep into it now being the most important thing I do every single day. And it has completely TOTALLY changed my life. – And in 2018, I’ll be making a full length feature film about it, and would love to share what I learn from traveling the world to interview “Awakened people.”

3. And of course, I’ll share everything I know about living passionate and purposeful.

I’m 51 now, and I’ve feel like I have more to share than ever before in my life. I’m grateful for life and I want to help as many people as I can be as grateful for their life as I am for mine.
