American Heart Association Shares the Most Common Mistakes and 7 Simple Tips for an Accurate Reading

Measuring blood pressure is one of the most common procedures performed at a medical office. Yet, studies have shown that numerous mistakes are made when taking readings.

For example, if you’ve ever had a conversation while getting checked you may have added an additional 10-15 mm Hg to a measurement. Having a full bladder can tack on 10-15 mm Hg, while putting the cuff over clothing, rather than a bare arm, can add 10-40 mm Hg. These errors may lead to higher readings, which may lead to a misdiagnosis.

In this interview Dr. Michael Hochman, Spokesperson for the American Heart Association, shares the most common mistakes (whether taken at home or at your doctor’s office) and 7 simple tips to ensure an accurate blood pressure reading. Dr. Hochman will also talks about the updated high blood pressure guidelines and what to do if your numbers are now borderline. In addition, Marcus Whitehead, a police officer and high blood pressure patient shares how not knowing his numbers almost lead to serious health complications, and what he now does to stay in a healthy range.

I bet you feel like you used to be smarter and quick at making decisions. I hear you and at 52, I feel like my brain is still fairly sharp but not like it was at 30. Let me ask you some personal questions:

Do you forget things easily?

Do you get derailed from a task easily or distracted by sounds and noises?

What about your IQ?

When my now 24-year-old son was just 9, a doctor thought he had ADHD, and I came this close to putting him on a stimulant. Even though I declined the medicine, I used natural fish oils high in DHA. He turned out to be naturally brilliant without any of those prescribed stimulants.

I’m not trying to alarm you about medications, but you should be informed so you can choose the best option for your loved ones. DHA fish oils are known to support a healthy brain and attention span in all people, young and old.

Studies have involved children and teenagers who had low levels of DHA and they, not surprisingly, had poor reading scores as well as behavioral problems. Could these children benefit from omega 3 supplementation? Low DHA in children aged 7 through 9 were associated with reading and comprehension that was below average, as well as behavioral issues. Why aren’t physicians considering DHA supplementation as a first-line treatment? Probably because the pharmaceutical sales people aren’t hyping those up.

Some studies point to DHA supplementation as a method of increasing overall intelligence as you get older. Can you imagine?! They based this finding on kids between the ages of 3 and 5 years old who had received omega 3 fat supplements as infants. Those kids outscored children who were in the placebo group who did not get the omega fats. By “outscored” I mean they had better results across the board on bot vocabulary and intelligence tests.

Omega-3 fatty acids seem to boost and balance your brain function. Basically, I’m saying we’re all fatheads and need good fats for our brain which consists of lipophilic cells.

About 60 percent or slightly more brain material is comprised of fat. Of the total fat, DHA makes up approximately 20 percent of your brain’s cerebral cortex. That’s the part of your brain that helps you think, learn a language, correctly perceive things, reason and comprehend. It is involved in voluntary movement so when you think I need to pick up that pen, your arm automatically does that for you, compliments of your cerebral cortex.

DHA plays an undeniable role for your cerebral cortex and your nerves. It’s found in unusually high levels in your neurons (the cells of your brain and spinal cord). That’s why patients with a TBI (traumatic brain injury) are told to take omega 3 fatty acids that are high in DHA content.

When you combine DHA fish oil with vitamin D or the calming mineral magnesium, the result can be even more astonishing, especially if you have other signs of cognitive decline such as memory loss, senior moments and problems making decisions.

And the Amazon Books Editors’ personal under-the-radar picks, in their own words:

The Story of the Lost Child by Elena Ferrante: The fourth and final of the “Neapolitan novels” by a pseudonymous Italian author, The Story of the Lost Child is the finale to a fascinating bunch of books about life, love, friendship, motherhood and, oh yes, politics. Is it exaggeration to say that Elena Ferrante is our Tolstoy? Maybe she’s more like Trollope, with a bit of Knausgaard and Peyton Place thrown in. – Sara Nelson

The Heart Goes Last by Margaret Atwood: This dystopian fantasy is about a social experiment gone horribly awry. In order to keep the unemployment rate in check, participants volunteer to go to prison. And no one need fret if penitentiary orange is not their color—it’ll be for six alternating months of the year, and the rest of the time they will resume their civilian lives. What could possibly go wrong? With echoes of The Handmaid’s Tale, this is Atwood at her chilling best. – Erin Kodicek

Submission by Michel Houllebecq: This is a very personal pick, as I’ve been reading Michel Houellebecq since The Elemental Practices was published in 2000. Houellebecq is not for everyone—unless you live in France, where he is a big best seller. I don’t consider myself to be a card-carrying Francophile, but he’s so atypical to the authors I normally read that I find myself looking forward to his books. – Chris Schluep

Star Wars: Aftermath by Chuck Wendig: Given Wendig’s electrifying writing and the setting of this book between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, I’m eager to see if there are any hints revealed about the upcoming film. – Adrian Liang

Thing Explainer: Complicated Stuff in Simple Words by Randall Munroe: On the heels of his best-selling What If?, Randall Munroe’s Thing Explainer describes how complex things work—using only the 1,000 most common words in the English language. The book will be fun. – Jon Foro

The Thing About Jellyfish by Ali Benjamin: Ali Benjamin’s debut is one of the best books (for readers age 9 and up) that I’ve read all year. Benjamin’s character, Suzy, is trying to make sense of a loss by researching an obscure but not impossible explanation. Suzy is endearing in her awkward innocence and her steadfast convictions. It’s a rich, multilayered novel beautifully told. – Seira Wilson

Lethem to participate in two programs at Sunday 9/20 festival, discussing storytelling and New York City with John Leguizamo; and exploring literary inspiration with Edwidge Danticat & Pete Hamill.

Brooklyn, NY—Friday, September 18, 2015—This weekend marks the 10th anniversary of the Brooklyn Book Festival. The Festival brings together acclaimed and best-selling authors for New York City’s largest free literary festival, which welcomes back AT&T as its major sponsor. This hip and diverse festival draws tens of thousands each year to the global creative capital of Brooklyn, NYC. This year the festival will honor Jonathan Lethem as the winner of the Festival’s Best of Brooklyn (BoBi) award.

Begun as a start-up festival in 2006, the Brooklyn Book Festival has grown to an international affair, drawing writers and attendees from around the word. In 2007, the Festival launched its BoBi award, an award designed to celebrate authors with a close connection to the city, whose work exemplifies literary excellence. Past honorees demonstrate the breadth of that talent, from bestselling YA author Lois Lowry to National Book Award winner James McBride, Pulitzer-winner Jhumpa Lahiri, and award-winning luminaries Paul Auster, Walter Mosley, John Ashbery, Pete Hamill, and Edwidge Danticat.

This year’s winner Jonathan Lethem is the author of The Fortress of Solitude, Dissident Gardens, and seven other novels. His hometown, Brooklyn, was the setting for several of his works, including his fifth, Motherless Brooklyn, which won the National Book Critic’s Circle Award. Lethem culls from influences as varied as comic books, detective novels, and pop music. His latest work, Lucky Alan and Other Stories, is a collection of short stories. Lethem’s writing has been translated into over thirty languages.

Brooklyn Literary Council Chair Johnny Temple: “It’s a great pleasure to present this year’s BoBi Award to Jonathan Lethem. He is one of the few authors whose own work connects the “old” Brooklyn literature of folks like Thomas Wolfe and Pete Hamill with the “new” writers like Colson Whitehead, Jennifer Egan, and Jhumpa Lahiri. His best-selling novel Fortress of Solitude is unparalleled in its depiction of Brooklyn’s changing landscape in the early twenty-first century. Plus, Jonathan has been a stalwart supporter of the festival since our very first year and has helped us to become New York City’s biggest annual public book event.”

The Festival will present the BoBi award to Jonathan Lethem at a star-studded gala mingle on Saturday, September 19th. At the Festival, Lethem will appear at two events: the Best of Brooklyn, in conversation with Edwidge Danticat and Pete Hamill, moderated by Johnny Temple; and at “Where Dreams are Made,” a conversation with John Leguizamo on how the city has shaped them as storytellers.
